(What happened to) Anarchist Memes?

The Facebook page Anarchist Memes (AM) has (temporarily?) closed, seemingly as a result of a decision by its creator. Before it deaded, the page had attracted something in the order of 80,000 or so ‘likes’ — a very large number for an ‘anarchist’ Facebook page. As for why the page was closed, it seems to have been a reaction to discussion among its 20 or so administrators regarding accusations of harassment, stalking and rape apologism (roughly, engaging in the defence of or excusing the practice of rape) aimed at the page’s creator, accusations which have been outlined on a blog and on some internet forums (libcom, for example). While it’s obviously difficult to know what precisely the various AM administrators did/not agree upon themselves, whatever ‘accountability’ process was instituted to address concerns regarding the continued role of its creator in administering the page has come to a very abrupt end — prompting the emergence of a replacement, presumably under the control of those formerly excluded.

Outside of FB, the issues which surround the closure of AM remain largely unresolved; for a recent attempt to critique processes by which some of these issues have been addressed, see : ‘Accounting for Ourselves: Breaking the Impasse Around Assault and Abuse in Anarchist Scenes’.

An Anarchist Communist living in Houston, Texas has posted a statement (August 7) titled ‘AMAG Communique #1: What happened with Anarchist Memes?’ which you can read here.

About @ndy

I live in Melbourne, Australia. I like anarchy. I don't like nazis. I enjoy eating pizza and drinking beer. I barrack for the greatest football team on Earth: Collingwood Magpies. The 2024 premiership's a cakewalk for the good old Collingwood.

Maybe you should have called this ‘Oh excellent an opportunity for me to jump on the BD hate train’. Pathetic post.

  2. @ndy says:

    G’day Peter,

Maybe. But then I try to find titles that are actually appropriate and/or humorous. There’s no invective in the above and as you can obviously read, I think you’re being a little mischievous by referring to transportation in this manner.

    Cheers,

    Andy.
