Neo-Nazis in Fitzroy?

[Update : See also Stateline (ABC TV) transcript of May 4, 2007; ‘Violence at public housing estate calls for State Government to help Sudanese community’.]

According to (a troll called) V on Indymedia, neo-Nazis in Fitzroy have recently been harassing Sudanese folks living in the Fitzroy Housing Commission flats. Apparently “over many consecutive nights there have been confrontations between the neo-Nazis and the Sudanese community there.” As a result, a public gathering is being held @ 7pm tonight @ the flats (Gertrude Street).

Blah blah blah… in reality, somebody’s been trolling the newswire, presumably inspired by the following:

Teen charged over triple stabbing | ABC Online | April 29, 2007

Hey @ndy, did you re-edit this to make your doubts a bit more explicit? (I share them too, though not because my former home is like peace and harmony or anything.) Did you make it to the meeting? Is there anything real about this?

I tried to go to that \’public gathering\’. I wandered around the estate for a while, didn\’t see anyone that looked like they were currently taking anti-nazi action and went home.

    hi lumpn,

yeah i did. before i just wrote ‘…but don’t believe everything you read…’, then added something like ‘…especially this…’. then, around 7, i edited the post to read something like the above.

    no meeting.

(dic : other peeps had same exp.)

odd, but likely to be some troll attempting to capitalise in some way on recent stabbing (race war! yippee!), and / or more serious attempt to obtain info on local folx interested in this kind of thing.

the mim story reads all funny, for a number of reasons (future pranksters pls take note):

“not too sure if everyone is aware of the neo-nazis’ presence around the fitzroy flats…”

    1 faux innocence.

“…but over many consecutive nights there have been confrontations between the neo-nazis and the Sudanese community there…”

2 a factual claim specific enough in detail to be checked — and found wanting. and ‘many consecutive nights’ is asking a bit much. like cheating on grades, better to change an F to an E than to an A.

“…residents fear [for] their safety, and are worried that the confrontations will escalate to racially motivated stabbings, as swords and knives have been involved so far.”

3 uh-huh. so: on the fitzroy housing estate, for MANY consecutive nights, there have been violent clashes, involving the use of SWORDS AND KNIVES, b/w NEO-NAZIS and SUDANESE RESIDENTS. but nobody else in the world has noticed, except for an anonymous author (with average grammar skills), who wants to organise an emergency mtg — bring yr own drums and “activities”…

whole thing reeks. that, plus sudden notice; no obvious (claimed) affiliation; claims of obviously false intimate r/ship to ‘the community’ @ the gardens; jolly’s denials (elsewhere on mim); and against background of recent violent assault (april 29) involving sudanese youth…

Thanks, @ndy, seems a good rundown, or at least one that accords with my impressions.
