{"id":21960,"date":"2010-11-09T17:43:43","date_gmt":"2010-11-09T07:43:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/slackbastard.anarchobase.com\/?p=21960"},"modified":"2010-11-09T17:46:27","modified_gmt":"2010-11-09T07:46:27","slug":"lasnet-conference-12-14-november-2010-trades-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/slackbastard.anarchobase.com\/?p=21960","title":{"rendered":"LASNET conference, 12&#8211;14 November 2010 @ Trades Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/solidaritygathering2010.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/09\/cropped-cabecalho1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>MEDIA RELEASE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>International Activists Challenge Corporate Crimes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From 12th to 14th November, international activists will converge at Trades Hall in Melbourne to call for an end to the power of huge companies to exploit people and our planet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be building alliances and global resistance against the actions of Rio Tinto, Barrick Gold, Fonterra, Chiquita Brands International, Monsanto, Drummond, BP\u201d said Rebecca Harrison from the Latin American Solidarity Network. \u201cTo protect the rights of workers, indigenous peoples and the environment we need to hold corporations accountable for their exploitative practices,\u201d added Ms Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>International representatives from grass roots organisations from New Zealand, West Papua, El Salvador, Bougainville, Philippines, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile and Colombia, as well as Australian indigenous and union representatives will be speaking at the gathering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonsanto controls 80% of Brazil\u2019s seed market\u201d, says Paola Masiero from the Landless Workers\u2019 Movement (MST) in Brazil, who represent an estimated 1.5 million members. \u201cIts promotion of genetically modified crops impacts the environment, cost of living and undermines food sovereignty through the creation of a monopoly and the destruction of biodiversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMultinational corporations such as Coca Cola, Nestle, BHP Billiton and Kraft are benefiting from deteriorating working conditions and paramilitary violence in Colombia ,\u201d says Fredy Sepulveda from SINALTRAINAL, the Colombian Food and Agro-Industry Workers Union. \u201cThis repression of labour struggles has resulted in the murder of more than 3000 trade unionists in the last 20 years and 38 in the year 2010.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference will examine corporate support or complicity with the exploitation of the poor of the world, the increasing undermining of workers\u2019 rights and union-busting, the displacement and forced assimilation of Indigenous communities, and the destruction of our natural resources and environment.<\/p>\n<p>Other speakers attending the Gathering include:<\/p>\n<ul>\u2022 Jaime Deluquez from the Miners Coal Workers Union and Colombia Cut in Colombia.<br \/>\n\u2022 Wilman Palmezano from the Wayuu Indigenous Community in Colombia.<br \/>\n\u2022 Miguel Suarez from the Mining Workers Federation in Chile.<br \/>\n\u2022 Manuel Morales, a Bolivian factory workers representative.<br \/>\n\u2022 Juan Contreras, Coordinator of Simon Bolivar in Venezuela.<br \/>\n\u2022 Santiago Punina from the CONAIE Indigenous National Council in Ecuador.<br \/>\n\u2022 Claudio Tranamil \u00d1anco from the Mapuche indigenous community in Chile.<br \/>\n\u2022 Cristina Fermovich from Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) in the Philippines.<br \/>\n\u2022 Clive Porabou, a representative of communities in Bougainville resisting Rio Tinto.<br \/>\n\u2022 Barbara Shaw, a spokesperson for The Intervention Rollback Action Group.<br \/>\n\u2022 Uncle Larry Walsh, Tauwurrung Elder, Kulin Nation.<br \/>\n\u2022 Robbie Thorpe, Krautungalung people of the Gunnai Nation.<br \/>\n\u2022 Uncle Chappi, Aboriginal leader from the Lake Cowal campaign.<br \/>\n\u2022 Uncle Kevin, Aboriginal leader from the anti-BHP Billiton campaign.<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PRESS CONFERENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A press conference will be held at 5.30 pm on Friday 12th November in the New Chambers Council in Trades Hall.
