A Twitter War broke out recently concerning the use of the term ‘hysterical’. In brief, Justin Shaw of The King’s Tribune<\/em> wrote an article on pornography<\/a> in which he referred to the “hysterical screeches” made by the “Anti-Pornography Activist, Lecturer, Author, Professor” Gail Dines<\/a> during her appearance on an episode (May 23, 2011<\/a>) of Q&A<\/em>. Justin’s use of the phrase was criticised by blogger Michael Brull<\/a> and the rest, as they say, is History — documented in some detail by Tammi Jonas in her post ‘Using my privilege to interrogate yours’<\/a>. In any event, a quick search of The Interwebs reveals that the ensuing controversy has generated a good deal of disco in the local blogosphere (Ben Pobjie writes about his tweeting on the subject here<\/a> and Billablog collects a few moar refs here<\/a>) but as an experiment, I thought I’d search my blog for instances of the term ‘hysterical’.<\/p>\n

I gots:<\/p>\n

The year ends with a hysterical <\/strong>encyclical from Pope Leo XIII on the \u201cdeadly pestilence of Communism.\u201d (Mike Davis<\/a>)<\/p>\n

5,000<\/strike> 500<\/strike> maybe 50 or so quasi-hysterical <\/strong>bigots gathered in Sydney on Saturday to wail about the Muhammadization of Australia. (slackbastard<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Chris Kenny\u2019s reprise of the tweet\u2009\u2014\u2009that Bess Price \u2026 well you got the idea\u2009\u2014\u2009was simply a sycophantic, hysterical <\/strong>hatchet job, tipping into the self-parodic… (Guy Rundle<\/a>)<\/p>\n

By my reckoning, whatever its etymology, in contemporary usage the term ‘hysterical’ is used as a rough synonym for ‘highly irrational’.<\/p>\n
