[BRAZIL] ACTIVISTS ARRESTED IN RIO DE JANEIRO ON THE EVE OF THE WORLD CUP<\/p>\n

Just over 24 hours before the start of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the forces of state repression have already struck against potential protesters. On the morning of this Wednesday, June 11th, six activists were detained in their own homes, had belongings seized, and were taken for questioning at the Center for Repression of Cybercrime (DRCI), in the so-called \u201cCidade da Pol\u00edcia\u201d [Police City], near the favela of Jacarezinho.<\/p>\n

Among the militants arrested are Elisa Quadros, known as Sininho [the Portuguese name for Tinkerbell], lawyer Elo\u00edsa Amy, and cameraman Thiago Ramos. All had their computers, cell phones, and other media confiscated by the police. Today, one might note, Sininho was slated to testify against Major Pinto of the military police of the state of Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n

Nearly three weeks ago in Goi\u00e2nia, in the state of Goi\u00e1s, search and seizure warrants were used as a method of intimidation and a means for curtailing the rights of protesters. The use of such coercive tactics against those citizens who plan to protest against FIFA\u2019s mega-event now seems to be repeating itself in the southeast.<\/p>\n

Two weeks ago, moreover, S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s Secretary of Public Security, Fernando Grella, had mentioned the possibility of arresting protesters.<\/p>\n

Given such overwhelming evidence that the Brazilian people live today under a FIFA-standard state of exception, the words from President Dilma Rousseff\u2019s speech on national television last night ring ironic: \u201cWe are a country that, albeit having emerged just a few decades ago from a dictatorship, today boasts a young, dynamic, vigorous democracy. We enjoy complete and total freedom and accept protests from the people, which increasingly help us to improve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Todos tiveram seus computadores, celulares e outras m\u00eddias confiscados pela pol\u00edcia. Hoje, vale ressaltar, Sininho testemunharia em processo contra o Major Pinto, da Pol\u00edcia Militar do Estado do Rio de Janeiro.\n\nNa \u00faltima semana em Goi\u00e2nia, mandatos de busca e apreens\u00e3o j\u00e1 haviam sido utilizados como forma de intimida\u00e7\u00e3o e cerceamento ao direito de manifesta\u00e7\u00e3o. A t\u00e1tica de coer\u00e7\u00e3o contra a parcela da popula\u00e7\u00e3o que pretende se manifestar contra o megaevento da FIFA parece estar se repetindo na capital carioca.\n\nH\u00e1 duas semanas, tamb\u00e9m, o secret\u00e1rio de Seguran\u00e7a P\u00fablica de S\u00e3o Paulo, Fernando Grella, anunciou que seriam feitas poss\u00edveis deten\u00e7\u00f5es de manifestantes.\n\nDiante de tantas evid\u00eancias de que o povo brasileiro vive hoje um verdadeiro Estado de exce\u00e7\u00e3o padr\u00e3o FIFA, o discurso da presidente Dilma Rousseff proferido na noite de ontem, em cadeia nacional, soa como uma ironia: \"Somos um pa\u00eds que, embora tenha passado h\u00e1 poucas d\u00e9cadas por uma ditadura, tem hoje uma democracia jovem, din\u00e2mica e pujante. Desfrutamos da mais absoluta liberdade e convivemos com manifesta\u00e7\u00f5es populares e reivindica\u00e7\u00f5es que nos ajudam a aperfei\u00e7oar, cada vez mais\".\n\n
