HESTA<\/a> — the industry super fund for health and community service workers — is a major shareholder in Transfield. <\/p>\n

You may remember Transfield from such campaigns as Boycott the Biennale of Sydney<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then and now, Transfield makes money from running Manus Island, the prison camp for asylum seekers. <\/p>\n

Many healthcare workers are unaware that their super funds are being invested in the illness factory that is Manus Island prison camp. Consequently, there is a campaign to raise awareness of this fact and to demand HESTA divests from Transfield.<\/p>\n

Australian unions with representation on the HESTA board include the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation<\/a> (ANMF), Australian Services Union<\/a> (ASU), Health Services Union<\/a> (HSU) and United Voice<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Australian Council of Trade Unions<\/a> (ACTU) is also on the HESTA board.<\/p>\n

The ASU made some noise about the issue back in March 2014<\/a> — it appears to have had little effect, with HESTA increasing its shares in Transfield late last year; HESTA is at present listed as owning 26,375,345 shares in Transfield Services.<\/p>\n
