The leader of Britain\u2019s Communist Party<\/a><\/strong> has become a multi-millionaire \u2014 inheriting a \u00a320.5 million painting that had been stolen by the Nazis.<\/p>\n

Anita Halpin<\/em>\u2019s huge windfall came when Berlin Street Scene<\/a><\/em>, by German artist Ernst Kirchner<\/a><\/em>, was sold at auction.<\/p>\n

It was snatched from the home of her German grandparents in 1936, but was returned<\/a> to her as sole surviving heir under Nazi restitution laws.<\/p>\n

Ms Halpin, 62, lives in Bow, East London. Asked how she would spend the cash, Ms Halpin, whose party believe in spreading wealth equally, said: “It\u2019s too early to call \u2014 let\u2019s leave it at that”.<\/p>\n

The picture sold to New York\u2019s Neue Galerie<\/a><\/strong> after frenzied bidding at Christie’s<\/strong> in Manhattan.<\/p>\n
