…In the build up to the first anniversary [of the Cronulla riots], there were similar efforts to create another confrontation. In particular, Murdoch\u2019s outlets, including The Australian<\/em>, encouraged a \u201cGreat Australian Bikini March,\u201d which the newspaper said would be staged outside a prominent mosque. The Australian<\/em>\u2019s December 7 editorial<\/a> endorsed the proposed march as a \u201cperfect example\u201d of the supposedly quintessentially Australian manner of \u201cdeflating fundamentalism of all stripes\u201d. It declared: \u201cthe more light shone on extremists in Australia\u2019s Muslim community, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cbikini march\u201d was planned to coincide with the Cronulla anniversary. Women dressed in swimsuits were to parade past Melbourne\u2019s Brunswick mosque, and possibly Sydney\u2019s Lakemba mosque, purportedly in response to comments made in October by a prominent Muslim cleric, Sheikh Taj Din al-Hilali<\/em>, which implied that female rape victims dressed in a manner that made them responsible for the crimes committed against them.<\/p>\n

Interviewed on ABC radio<\/a>, Christine Hawkins<\/em>, a march organiser, appealed to the same social elements that took part in the Cronulla riots. The bikini march would be \u201cabout maintaining our way of life\u201d. She encouraged participants to wear beachwear, as this was an \u201ciconic image for most Australians,\u201d strongly associated with \u201cour beach culture\u201d. Hawkins claimed not to belong to any political group.<\/p>\n

The racist Australia First Party<\/strong> supported the Melbourne march on its website. It also called for a commemorative gathering at Cronulla beach on the anniversary of the riots. However, neither event attracted any significant public support. According to media reports<\/a>, a few Australian First<\/strong> supporters were at the largely deserted Cronulla beach, handing out fliers to passers-by. The bikini marches failed to eventuate, with the organisers declaring the Melbourne march postponed<\/a> until Australia Day, January 26…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

…But where were those ferals on Sunday? Where were these “‘patriotic troops” Germaine Greer warned<\/a> would be brawling with “Lebanese Muslim youths, inspired by rap, ablaze with bling, armed to the teeth” in what “looks like a bloody summer in Australia”?<\/p>\n

Nowhere. Even The Great Australian Bikini March<\/strong> on a mosque was called off by organisers, shamed into covering up their flesh and their bigotry.<\/p>\n

Joe, we’re all right, mate. Settle down. And let’s talk.<\/p>\n

It’s a fine country, this, with a long, long traditon of tolerance and getting along.<\/p>\n

Yes, we have a few problems, but nothing so wild that we can’t sort it out, provided we don’t overreact. So, let’s quietly sort out one problem that has us suddenly jumpier than we should be…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
