On Crikey<\/a><\/strong>, Stephen Mayne<\/a><\/em> reports that the AEC<\/strong> has recently de-registered a whole swag of political parties, by reason of the ‘Application of Schedule 3 of the Electoral and Referendum Amendment (Electoral Integrity and Other Measures) Act 2006<\/a><\/em>‘. Mayne reckons that this “must surely go down as one of [HoWARd’s] lowest acts”, which should give you some idea of his priorities, as well as his attachment<\/a> to People Power<\/strong>. Anyway, for what it’s worth, the parties that — as of December 27, 2006 — have been de-registered are:<\/p>\n 1) Christian Democratic Party (Fred Nile Group); and last, but by no means<\/em> least<\/p>\n 19) The Great Australians.<\/p>\n The AEC helpfully provides an infosheet<\/a> on its site, which purports to explain the legal gobbledygook found in the Act<\/em>. In plain English then:<\/p>\n Schedule 3 of the Electoral and Referendum Amendment (Electoral Integrity and Other Measures) Act 2006<\/em> (the Amendment Act) operates to de-register those political parties without current or past representation in Federal Parliament<\/em><\/strong>…<\/p>\n What is the rationale for de-registration?<\/strong><\/p>\n The Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters<\/strong> made a number of recommendations for change to the Act in its \u2018Report of the inquiry into the Conduct of the 2004 federal Election and Matters Related thereto\u2019.<\/p>\n Chapter 4 of the Report included recommendations to address apparent confusion on the part of electors over party names<\/em><\/strong>.
