Activists Prevented From Giving Away Food<\/a>

Volunteers giving food to homeless people and street children in central St. Petersburg were stopped by police<\/strong> on Sunday, Fontanka.ru reported.<\/p>\n

Members of the \u201cFood, Not Bombs\u201d<\/a><\/strong> group were giving out food outside Vladimirskaya Metro Station when the police intervened.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the activists who were at the square at the time \u2014 around 15 people \u2014 were detained by plain-clothes policemen,\u201d a purported witness claimed on Indymedia Piter<\/strong>, an activist web site on Sunday.<\/p>\n

No independent confirmation of this account was available Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout being given a reason for the detention, with [the police] merely presenting their IDs, [the participants] were pushed into [police] vehicles and taken to the station,\u201d the Indymedia account continues.<\/p>\n

A participant of the event contacted by The St. Petersburg Times<\/em>, who declined to be named, agreed with the details of the account published on the Indymedia Piter website.<\/p>\n

However, the police are reported to have said that the activists were not formally detained but taken in for a \u201ctalking to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLaw enforcement representatives maintain it was not a detention, but a preventative undertaking,\u201d Fontanka.ru reported on Sunday. \u201cThe participants [in the \u2018Food Not Bombs\u2019 event] were invited to the station for a chat.\u201d<\/p>\n

All those involved were released the same day.<\/p>\n

In early February a bomb exploded<\/strong> under a flower stall outside Vladimirskaya Metro Station on the same day that a [FNB] event was scheduled to take place there. The explosion left the stall\u2019s salesperson with minor injuries.<\/p>\n

In January, 21-year-old Ivan Yelin was seriously injured in a knife attack<\/strong> on the way home from participating in a [FNB] event.<\/p>\n

In November 2005, anti-fascist campaigner Timur Kacharava<\/a><\/em> was stabbed to death<\/strong> by unknown [boneheads] outside a bookstore on Ligovsky Prospekt after being followed from a [FNB] event.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
