There, occupying someone else&#8217;s space \u2014 as long as it has been left vacant for 12 months [until recently, this was actually <em>one<\/em> month] \u2014 is considered a right. That&#8217;s how Bart and his friends came to reside at 91 eerste Oosterparkstraat, a rundown townhouse in central Amsterdam&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In Australia too, homelessness in someone else&#8217;s world can be &#8216;got around&#8217; by squatting, though the laws which relate to squatting are far harsher than Holland (or England for that matter). In Australia, there is no &#8216;right&#8217; to housing, and squatting &#8212; while not in and of itself a crime &#8212; is rendered a criminal activity under more general property laws, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love, cherish, and to obey, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juanita_Nielsen\">till death us do part<\/a>, according to God&#8217;s holy ordinance.<\/p>\n<p>Or not.<\/p>\n<ul><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/squattersguide\/\">No Frills Melbourne Squatters Guide<\/a><\/em> (February 2002) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aspaceoutside.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/squatters_guide.pdf\">PDF<\/a>)<\/ul>\n<p>Melbourne has a long history of squatting, both residential and social, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/barricade.org.au\">Barricade<\/a><\/strong> has an archive of materials relating to this history, which covers the period from the late &#8217;70s through to the early- to mid- &#8217;90s, and which will one day soon &#8212; hopefully &#8212; be uploaded&#8230; stay tuned!<\/p>\n<p>Word on the street is that <strong>Victoria Police<\/strong> have recently organised an anti-<em>kraak<\/em> squad. This is presumably in response to a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/slackbastard.anarchobase.com\/?p=471\">recent (social) squatting activities<\/a>, a housing market &#8212; especially in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/news\/business\/high-rents-push-innercity-living-out-of-bounds\/2007\/02\/06\/1170524094766.html\">the inner city<\/a> &#8212; which excludes the poor &#8212; especially <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/news\/national\/hint-of-hope-for-student-renters\/2007\/02\/24\/1171734074070.html\">students<\/a> &#8212; and an expectation that, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/news\/national\/work-laws-cut-wages-strip-penalties-study-finds\/2007\/02\/13\/1171128974111.html\">wages decrease<\/a>, and rentals sky-rocket, more and more people will choose to forgo <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/news\/business\/rogue-rental-agents-face-crackdown\/2007\/02\/27\/1172338584311.html\">enriching real estate agents and their clients<\/a>, and instead squat empty housing (of which there is approximately 750,000 units <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anu.edu.au\/polsci\/marx\/interventions\/squatters.htm\">Down Under<\/a>).
