Biographical note<\/em> : <\/p>\n

Dr James Saleam (b.1955) specialises in the study of foreign languages, especially Saleamese<\/em>: an amalgam of Arabic, English, and desperation. The exact origins of this strange tongue are unknown, but much speculated upon. Some experts believe that it may have been born in a Middle Eastern trading port in the late nineteenth century, and arrived in Australia by boat some few decades later. Others believe it to be Greek in origin. In any case, it’s here in Australia, and especially in the city of Sydney, that Saleamese continues to eke out an existence, largely as a result of the indefatigable Doktor and his small but dedicated band of followers; their efforts winning occasional notoriety but otherwise bemused indifference. The number of speakers of Saleamese, therefore, remains tiny, and occasional attempts to recruit other practitioners through stuffing letterboxes with junk mail has met with very limited success. A recent example of this activity (August 9) has been reported<\/a> by the Sydney Morning Herald<\/em>, following the distribution of a pamphlet in Sydney’s west, condemning the Somali language and various Sudanese dialects while simultaneously praising the virtues of Saleamese. “A lot of people are starting to do homemade pamphlets and associate themselves with us,” Dr Saleam is quoted as saying. Of course, whether or not this trend is reflected in increased enrolments at his language school in Tempe remains to be seen.<\/p>\n
