    While sentencing five strikers to jail for attacking scabs during an ongoing maritime strike, a police magistrate denounces such behaviour as “absolutely un-English … I begin to think that the race has died out”. In response one of those in the dock replies, “Thanks be to the Lord … I’m Irish”.
