…something better change…

…but nothing ever does…

In Australia, Tyler Cassidy, the Northcote teenager shot dead by police on December 11, 2008, was remembered at a vigil last Friday night. In Greece, the first anniversary of Alexandros Grigoropoulos’ murder was commemorated in a slightly more animated fashion, the repercussions of which are still being felt as Greek police join with Greek fascists in repressing stylee Greek kids’ street fashions. Or to put it another way: the great majority of the police, seemingly ever-patient and self-controlled, stood for hours as kids baited and yelled, shoved and provoked. A handful of officers used well-placed elbows while batons were raised only in response to the vandalism. Further:

AFP, December 6, 2009:

Athens University rector Christos Kittas was rushed to hospital after protesters broke into the university’s central Athens offices to occupy them, a police source said. Media reports said his injuries were light.

Rioting returns to Athens a year after teenager’s death, ekathimerini.com, December 7, 2009:

The rector of the University of Athens, Christos Kittas, was also admitted to the hospital after rioters stormed into his office. Kittas was struck on the head and was taken to the Ippocrateio Hospital, where doctors placed him in intensive care, saying that he had suffered a mild heart attack.

Push for fresh look at asylum, ekathimerini.com, December 9, 2009:

The discussion [about the university asylum law] has been reignited by the attack on Sunday that led to University of Athens Rector Christos Kittas ending up in an intensive-care unit.

Student sit-in over security measures, ekathimerini.com, December 9, 2009:

…the rector of the University of Athens, Christos Kittas… was hospitalized on Sunday after being beaten up by assailants wielding iron bars…

After having been lightly beaten by a gang wielding iron bars, suffering a heart attack, and being rushed to hospital where he was placed into intensive care, supposedly:

To the people asking about the “injured” rector of the Athens University: This is only coming from mainstream media and we can only be very suspicious about this piece of news, as this injury could be used as pretext for storming the Athens University, which seems to be something the cops are considering. The rector did walk past two people reporting for the Occupied London blog, just outside the university. Both confirm he seemed more pissed [off] than “injured”. At the same time, mainstream media report that he is in intensive care!

An anonymous commentator adds: “The rector of the University of Athens is in intensive care, after he was beaten. He just had a concussion but he also suffers from a heart condition, that’s why they put him in IC.”

Hugs abound in animal therapy, Nick Miller, The Age, December 11, 2009: A young girl, scarred by her broken family, sat in an animal shelter with a kitten under each arm, and said quietly to them, ”It’s all right, I don’t have a home either.”
