A segment of Melbourne Knights (Croatia) fans are still giving props to Nazism (photos located next to Melbourne Knights stadium in Somers Street, Sunshine North). Note that in 2007 the Melbourne Croatia Social Club hosted the annual Ian Stuart Donaldson memorial gig, organised by local neo-Nazi groups Blood & Honour (Australia) and the (Southern Cross) Hammerskins. The subject of fascist Croatian dictator Ante Pavelić and his veneration by segments of the local Croatian community remains a bone of contention in Melbourne (and elsewhere).

Please the Ustashi weren’t formed because they were Nazis, the Ustashi were never aligned to the Nazis when they came to power. The Ustashi only came to power in defence of Croatian people who were being terrorised by constant and brutal attacks from Serbia and its murdering Serbian terrorists, which was again witnessed during the ’90s war in the old Yugoslavia. The Ustashi word is derived from the Croatian word ‘ustanak’ [?] meaning to stand up, please Google it. Serbia was already in negotiation with the Nazis before the Ustashi were formed. Germany wanted Serbia originally to be its allies and not Croatia. Negotiations fell apart because Serbia wanted too much for being allies with Germany. Serbia wanted lands from Croatia and all the lands to the Aegean Sea to be under a Greater Serbia. Germany only turned to Croatia after talks fell apart with Serbia, which was the first country in the world to declare its capital city of Belgrade to be Jewish-free. This is why Germany wanted to be allies with Serbia. Also, who wasn’t an ally of Germany then? Everyone was because no one thought Germany would lose during that time. Please, we have photos of the young Queen Elizabeth doing the Nazi salute. The Royal Family has close ties to Germany and were also friendly to Germany during WWII.The Croatian army had officers in the Ustashi who were of Jewish and Orthodox faith. Why would the Croatian Ustashi army allow this if Croatians were bad Nazis according to Serbia? Name any other country during WWII that allowed this to happen. So many lies about Croatia have been spread by Serbia under the guise of Yugoslavia as the truth according to Serbia’s never-ending changing history which is evident in today’s literature. The swastika on that roller door could have been done by anyone. I could do the same thing by spraying some hate message to upset and cause hatred to another nationality or religion.
The Ustasha were and are Fascists.

The Axis occupation of Yugoslavia in 1941 allowed the Croatian radical right Ustaše to come into power, forming the “Independent State of Croatia” (Nezavisna Država Hrvatska, NDH), led by Ante Pavelić, who assumed the role of Poglavnik. Following the pattern of other fascist regimes in Europe, the Ustashi enacted racial laws, formed eight concentration camps targeting minority Serbs, Romas and Jewish populations, as well as Croatian and Bosnian Muslim partisans. The biggest concentration camp was Jasenovac in Croatia. The NDH had a program, formulated by Mile Budak, to purge Croatia of Serbs, by “killing one third, expelling the other third and assimilating the remaining third”.[35] The main targets for persecution were the Serbs, with approximately 330,000 were killed.[36][37]
Give me a break, of course the Ustasha were fascists – fascists, genocidal bigots, death camp enthusiasts, anti-Semites, the kind who saved bullets by having people use hacksaws to kill countless civilians, the worst of the fucking worst.
For what it is worth, if people really want to try to think about these questions, there are a bunch of useful texts out there, not difficult to find. In 2006 Nevenko Bartulin wrote a dissertation on ‘The ideology of nation and race: the Croatian Ustasha regime and its policies toward minorities in the independent state of Croatia, 1941-1945’, and, while it isn’t necessarily flawless, it is an interesting reflection on the relations on the ways in which nationalism and racism were developed and negotiated in the reactionary movements of early and mid- twentieth century Europe, with the particular example obviously being how the Ustasha ended up with their own…policies…in relation to ‘minorities’ in the ‘Croatian nation’.
