“Crisis”

OMGWTF the 2009 Sydney Forum has a rival! dr.woooo informs me that:

“Seeing through Empire’s new clothes” is a conference that will be held from September 12–13, 2009 at the Redfern Community Centre in Sydney. The conference aims to discuss economic ‘crisis’ and responses to it. Or:

What are the origins of the crisis? How is it affecting workers? What is the relationship between the current crisis and earlier times of working class resistance? What is the capacity for resistance and solidarity now? How are they being organised, and how can they be strengthened?

The only real crisis that capitalism faces is the refusal and resistance of ordinary people, in our daily lives.

This conference aims to critique the current wave of responses to capitalism’s current predicament. It is an opportunity to collectively analyse its ‘new clothes’. As ordinary people ourselves, it is a chance to strategise together for solidarity with emerging and ongoing struggles for workers’ autonomy and control, peoples’ freedom of movement, sustainability, sovereignty and self determination.

Speakers include Humphrey B. McQueen, Jack Mundey & Nick Southall.

In Melbourne, this Friday (July 31), from 12.30–1.30pm, a rally is being held outside of the HQ of International Power @ the Rialto Hotel:

Head Office
International Power Australia Pty Ltd
Level 37, Rialto North Tower
525 Collins Street
Melbourne
Victoria 3000

In brief: Emergency Services Officers (ESO) at International Power Hazelwood in Morwell (the most polluting station in the industrialised world) have been on a picket line for nearly four months. These workers have their public holidays and penalties included in their industry’s lowest hourly rate. They are merely seeking an industry standard, the norm at other power plants and mines for the same work. Their direct employer, Diamond Protection, have admitted that they cannot negotiate the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement meaningfully — International Power is the power behind Diamond Protection’s throne.

Note that the KRudd Government is currently considering providing $20 billion in corporate welfare to ‘big electricity generators’ “with some suggesting the compensation could be tied to new investments in renewable power” (Big electricity generators plead for $20bn ETS aid, Lenore Taylor, The Australian, July 23, 2009). Among those going to Canberra armed with begging bowls is International Power, the owner of Loy Yang B and Hazelwood generators in the LaTrobe Valley:

The government is already offering the generators 130 million free permits worth at least $3.5bn over the first five years of the ETS [Emissions Trading Scheme]. However, the generators – which provide more than 20 per cent of Australia’s east coast power – claim that will not be enough to stop a looming financial crisis and possible future disruptions to power supplies.

Further note that, @ the same time as the conference in Sydney, “On Sunday September 13 2009 people from across Victoria, and Australia, will come together for a day of peaceful community mass civil disobedience to Switch off Hazelwood and Switch off Coal – we will be taking direct action for renewable energy.” For further infos, please see : Switch off Hazelwood.

Finally, note that governments — including that of Old Boys such as Brumby’s — are shitting bricks over how best to ensure that movements for environmental and social justice do not interfere unduly with the business cycle as it renders Our Earth into a Wasteland.

Here’s to a World in which androgynous plants copulate, the Mediterranean remains milder than the North Pole, the oceans are made of lemonade and full of happy dolphins, whales and other life, and the world contains 37 billion poets “equal to Homer.”

Friday Night Anarchy (July 31)

This Friday, July 31

Shutdown : The Rise and Fall of Direct Action to Stop the War (2006):

SHUTDOWN documents a piece of the continuous struggle towards social justice. Using the March 20, 2003 occupation and disruption of the San Francisco Financial District as a case study, the film casts a thoughtful eye on one of the most successful actions of the current anti-war movement, facilitated by Direct Action to Stop the War (DASW). Created to gain insight, inspire, and draw lessons the movie tells the story of how social justice organizers and everyday people came together to plan and shut down the financial district of a major US city…

When: 6.30–11.30pm
Where: Melbourne Anarchist Resource Centre, 62 St Georges Road, Northcote

*Before the film starts there will be some Young Ones. Because we may not, be The Young Ones, very long…

Next Friday (August 7) : Generation Terror: The Angry Brigade (BBC).

See also : Randolph Bourne, ‘War Is the Health of the State’ (1919).

…Such attitudes are inevitable as arising from the devotees of the State. For the State is a personal as well as a mystical symbol, and it can only be understood by tracing its historical origin. The modern State is not the rational and intelligent product of modern men desiring to live harmoniously together with security of life, property, and opinion. It is not an organization which has been devised as pragmatic means to a desired social end. All the idealism with which we have been instructed to endow the State is the fruit of our retrospective imaginations. What it does for us in the way of security and benefit of life, it does incidentally as a by-product and development of its original functions, and not because at any time men or classes in the full possession of their insight and intelligence have desired that it be so. It is very important that we should occasionally lift the incorrigible veil of that ex post facto idealism by which we throw a glamour of rationalization over what is, and pretend in the ecstasies of social conceit that we have personally invented and set up for the glory of God and man the hoary institutions which we see around us. Things are what they are, and come down to us with all their thick encrustations of error and malevolence. Political philosophy can delight us with fantasy and convince us who need illusion to live that the actual is a fair and approximate copy — full of failings, of course, but approximately sound and sincere — of that ideal society which we can imagine ourselves as creating. From this it is a step to the tacit assumption that we have somehow had a hand in its creation and are responsible for its maintenance and sanctity…

Anarchist? Queer? XY not?

Or to put it another way:

In Marvellous Melbourne, expressions of interest are being sought with regards the formation of an anarchist queer / queer anarchist group. It is presently The Collective With No Name, and is “open to anybody who identifies as Queer, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Pansexual, Trans, Intersexual, Cisgender, Two Spirit, Androgyne, Genderqueer, Genderfuck, Fa’afafine*, non-heterosexual” and so on and so forth.

A blog is apparently being published, and meetings of interested parties organised (to be held, as I understand it, @ the ‘Melbourne Anarchist Resource Centre’, 62 St Georges Rd, Northcote). According to the riotous queer responsible: “The aim is to incorporate a stronger Queer perspective into the Anarcho [‘anarchist’] movement and to provide a space where Queer Anarchists can freely address issues important to their struggle”.

David Irving Invades the United States!

Portland, Oregon says David Irving Not Welcome: Some Notes on July 19

On Sunday, July 19, approximately 50 anti-fascists and anti-racists made their way to the Embassy Suites – Airport hotel in Portland, to oppose the Holocaust-denier and neo-fascist David Irving, and the sympathizers who had paid $24-$30 each to hear him talk.

Conveniently located at the entrance to the Portland International Airport, the Embassy Suites Hotel Portland Airport is your gateway to all the area has to offer. From the hotel, the MAX light rail system provides easy access to downtown Portland and local attractions like the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Oregon Zoo, Portland Art Museum, and the Rose Garden, home to the Portland Trailblazers. Alternatively, why not make your stay at Embassy Suites Hotel Portland Airport an educational one, and listen to one of our very special guests explain to you why the Holocaust is a magnificent work of Jewish fiction? Granted, our owner, John Q. Hammons, may have served in the Merchant Marines, but that’s Ancient History, right?

Although Irving’s event was not shut down, we consider our intervention to have been successful in sending a clear message that fascist organizing is not welcome in our community, and that Irving will be met with resistance. This was not only an achievement for Rose City Antifa members, who were a minority within the opposition to the event, it was also an important result for the broader anti-racist community, which mobilized effectively and at short notice. We believe that events such as that on Sunday set the stage for more substantial victories in the future.

David Irving is a British writer of histories who has been involved with the fascist political scene since the 1960s. Always known for the pro-Hitler bias of his books, approximately two decades ago Irving made the transition to being a fully-fledged Holocaust-denier. In addition to spreading blatant historical lies, Irving has publicly stated that “The Jews are the architects of their own misfortune”. Although Irving has been banned from several countries and even imprisoned for his Holocaust-denial propagandizing and pro-Nazi agitation, he has been touring the United States since the beginning of July.

Irving’s Portland stop was booked at the Embassy Suites hotel by the airport, under the name of “Parforce”. (The Seattle stop the previous day was booked as “Focal Point Publications,” Irving’s publishing company.) Rose City Antifa released information about the venue as soon as it was discovered and confirmed. A flood of calls to the venue began immediately afterwards. Management at the Embassy Suites – Airport hotel refused to shut down the event despite being educated that a notorious Holocaust-denier and cohort of neo-Nazis was using their space. Rose City Antifa condemns the cowardly management of this establishment, who enabled the anti-Semitic event to go on despite calm and well-reasoned argument from community members (plus shouting and confrontation later).

We encourage any individuals or groups who may consider giving their business to Embassy Suites hotels, not to do so. Feel free to call the Portland Airport location and tell them why you are withholding your support: 503 460 3000.

Irving had slightly over two dozen attendees for his talk–half the number of his anti-fascist opponents. One of the largest blocs of attendees on Irving’s side came from the Portland 9/11 Truth Alliance, who were rallied together for the event by Alliance organizer Tim Titrud. One of the individuals who may have been invited to see Irving by Titrud is Rod(erick) McLaughlin AKA “Jay Knott”. McLaughlin is a Portland-based participant in Eugene, Oregon’s Pacifica Forum, a group which specializes in hosting anti-Semitic speakers (such as David Irving himself last year). McLaughlin writes the Pacifica Forum’s blog on their website. He was also the person who initially suggested that Titrud, Tim Calvert and the rest of the 9/11 Truth Alliance host the Holocaust-denier Valdas Anelauskas in Portland during June of this year, in the wake of 9/11 Truth Alliance members attending a Pacifica Forum gathering in Eugene. After McLaughlin attended a presentation by Irving at the Pacifica Forum last year, he summed up his feelings in an article: “To hell with the feelings of minorities. Anti-semitism, if it exists at all, should not be seen as a problem.”

The security at the Irving event was tighter than during previous tours, with information about the event location only meant to be disclosed a half-hour before it was scheduled to commence, although Antifa managed to find the venue somewhat earlier. Irving’s personal assistant, Jaenelle Antas, was observed in several different outfits during the course of the event, and some of Irving’s crowd attempted to glean information about their opponents.

The police presence was large, and they came prepared with vans to haul off anti-racists. The police were called by the hotel management to protect their fascist customers. Thankfully, no one was arrested or otherwise harmed by police during the event. We came away with a significant amount of information about Irving’s attendees.

Rose City Antifa calls for all anti-racists to do the necessary research and confront the rest of Irving’s speaking dates:

    July 29 Wednesday: Denver
    July 30 Thursday: Omaha
    July 31 Friday: Chicago
    August 1 Saturday: Indianapolis

In the meantime, feel free to give David Irving a call on his cellphone and let the fascist scumbag know how you feel: 305 923 6779. Remember to hide caller ID (*67) before dialing.

No platform for fascists, no compromise!

    July 22 Wednesday: Sacramento
    July 23 Thursday: San Francisco

A Slack Feathered Bastard (Stephen Lemon, Phoenix New Times, July 13, 2009) writes: “You know your career as a historian has hit a new low when you’re hawking books out the back of a Phoenix diner better known for its hash browns than its literary events…”

LOL.

To the best of my knowledge, David Irving has never toured Australia, although in 2003, self-described ‘transcendental fascist’, crap filmmaker and terminal boor Richard Wolstencroft did attempt to screen The Search For Truth In History, a 1993 videotaped lecture by Irving, as part of the 2003 MUFF festival. (Wolstencroft’s film Pearls Before Swine (1999) — reputedly one of Australia’s worst — also featured the enormous talents of US neo-fascist Boyd Rice.) The fascist’s film festival (MUFFF) is this year being sponsored by Dutch beer company Grolsch (owned by SABMiller, “one of the world’s largest bottlers of Coca-Cola products and other soft drinks”), the apolitical hipsters of gasinc (“Australia’s most innovative studio network”), screenhub and the empty bubble headed consumers @ encore. Mike Ely (Kasama) has re-published Christopher Day’s essay ‘The Historical Failure of Anarchism’ [PDF]:

‘The Historical Failure of Anarchism’ was written for a conference on anarchist strategy in 1996 and subsequently became the object of controversy within the Love and Rage Revolutionary Anarchist Federation where it was seen as a break with anarchism. The resulting debates precipitated the breakup of Love and Rage in 1998. Members of Love and Rage went on to work in the Fire By Night organizing committee, Bring the Ruckus and the North East Federation of Anarcho-Communists (NEFAC) among other projects. For further background on the history of Love and Rage people can read “After Winter Must Come Spring,” a summation of Love and Rage’s experience by the Fire By Night Organizing Committee published by Freedom Road Socialist Organization.

Local Artists Take Work Outside in Political Protest
Sergey Chernov
The St. Petersburg Times
July 24, 2009

A group of local artists is taking its art into the street to make a statement, turning exhibitions into political protests and supplementing protests with its artwork.

Having held two street shows in St. Petersburg late last month, they took their exhibition to Moscow at the weekend, where it was part of a demonstration in support of a young man persecuted by the police on Saturday.

Called “Managed Democracy: Horror from Nature,” the series of paintings was created during a 14-day open-air hunger strike, in which several artists sat in a park near Smolny Institute, home to City Hall, creating paintings protesting police arbitrariness in May and June.

They demanded an investigation into and punishment of the bureaucrats and police officers responsible for dispersing a 300-strong crowd who came to hold an authorized anarchist Pirate Street Party as part of the May Day demonstrations (over 130 were detained, officially for “crossing the road in the wrong place.”) They also demanded the release of artist Artyom Loskutov, who was arrested on drug charges in Novosibirsk in mid-May, and an investigation into the activities of the “E” (anti-extremism) Center that was reported to be behind Loskutov’s case…

@ndy (slackbastard) has replied to Christopher Day’s essay ‘The Historical Failure of Anarchism’ below:

I’m sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
I’ve got to be free, free to face the life that’s ahead of me
On board, I’m the captain, so climb aboard
We’ll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I’ll try, oh Lord, I’ll try to carry on

I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had
We live happily forever, so the story goes
But somehow we missed out, on that pot of gold
But we’ll try best that we can to carry on

A gathering of angels appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they did
They said come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
*you guys*
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
*ya guys had it*
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me…

Love (Chinese Way)

Chinese patriots have gone Ken Loach one better (Chinese hack into film festival site, Mary-Anne Toy, The Age, July 26, 2009):

CHINESE hackers have attacked the Melbourne International Film Festival website in an intensifying campaign against the screening of a documentary about exiled Uighur leader Rebiya Kadeer…

The MIFF site is still up, but not in very good shape.

According to Xinhua (Xinjiang officials pledge crackdown on violent crime, call for safeguarding ethnic unity, www.chinaview.cn, July 24, 2009):

…the 12th meeting of the 11th Standing Committee of the Xinjiang Regional People’s Congress which ended Friday… passed a resolution on cracking down on violent crimes and safeguarding ethnic unity and social stability. The resolution said the riot was masterminded by the separatist, terrorist and extremist forces led by Rebiya Kadeer and was aimed at fomenting hostility, destroying stability and separating the nation.

“The Chinese government always blames me and the World Uighur Congress for problems over there,” Kadeer told The Associated Press.

Jock Palfreeman : July 2009 Update

Jock Palfreeman went to court on July 2.

One witness, who works in the building where the CCTV footage went missing (which is still missing, along with the computer on to which it was recorded — see : Jock Palfreeman : May 2009 Update) gave evidence at the hearing. He was asked if police spoke to him. He said ‘No’, but added that some individuals came to his workplace on the day following the original incident to look at the video. He did not specify whether they were police.

Jock also gave a statement to the court about the day’s events.

Jock’s lawyer made a request that Jock be placed under house arrest (in the apartment of an acquaintance in Sofia), but the judge ruled this option invalid on the basis that Jock — especially as a foreigner — was a flight risk.

As it stands, 19 months after having been arrested, Jock remains unconvicted, unsentenced, and languishes in Sofia prison.

For more details on Jock’s case, and further information on how to assist Jock, please see freejock.net:

Jock Palfreeman, a 22 year old Australian, was visiting friends in Bulgaria when he witnessed the vicious gang beating of another man in December, 2007. Going to the aid of this man, Jock was brutally attacked by the group, and is now facing murder charges in Sofia – Bulgaria’s capital. Although he acted in self-defence, Jock is being treated as a murderer and a hooligan as he endures a lengthy trial and near-torturous prison conditions.

At freejock.net, we maintain that Jock acted in self-defence, and strongly believe he should be returned to his family and friends in Australia. The purpose of this website is to be an accurate information resource for those interested in his case, and to provide a means for his supporters to unite and support this young man through his ordeal. It is not an attack on Bulgaria or its people; we simply want the fair and transparent trial that all people are entitled to.

Friends and supporters of Jock held a public meeting in Sydney on July 19; an article appeared in the local press regarding his case: Friends rally to free Jock, Boel Eriksson, The Mosman Daily, July 15, 2009 / Help us find justice for our mate Jock, Boel Eriksson, The North Shore Times, July 16, 2009. Jock’s case has also come to the attention of the Roma Virtual Network. See also : Foreign Correspondent : One Night in Sofia (Jock Palfreeman) (June 3, 2009).

Please note that the individual on whose behalf Jock intervened is a Romani (‘Gyspy’), and that Bulgaria has an unfortunate history of anti-Roma violence. For further background infos, please see:

One Nation’s publication of anti-Jewish material declared unlawful in Federal Court [PDF]
ECAJ
February 6, 2006

Material published in ‘The Nation’, the newspaper of the Queensland division of One Nation, by consent of the editor and publisher of the newspaper, has been declared to be unlawful under the Racial Discrimination Act, in the Federal Court today.

An article alleged Jews are running a conspiracy to steal freedoms from ordinary people, using a combination of pornography and internet censorship, and was accompanied by a gross anti-Jewish cartoon.

The complaint was lodged by Jeremy Jones, who at the time of the publication was president of the Jewish community’s peak body, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), on behalf of the Council.

Jones argued an article and an accompanying cartoon published in Volume 4, Edition 10 of the newspaper in late 2004 was a public act which caused offence, insult, humiliation and/or intimidation to Jewish Australians, and failed to fall into any of the legal categories which might permit its publication.

Rodney Andrew Evans, who took responsibility for the publication of the article, agreed to a written statement of apology to Jeremy Jones, which read:

“Mr Rodney Andrew Evans hereby unreservedly and unconditionally apologises to you and the Australian Jewish community for having published material in contravention of the Racial Discrimination Act. I undertake that I will not publish any such material in the future and that all such material which is presently published by The Nation in any print or electronic media (including the Internet) will forthwith be withdrawn from publication”.

Mr Evans also agreed to be restrained from publishing similar material in the future.

The article, written by Carl D. Thompson, was described by Federal Minister Peter McGauran MP as one of the most obscene antisemitic articles he had ever seen associated with a political party. Len Harris, who was a senator representing One Nation when the material was published, said “There is only one place the One Nation newspaper should be, and that is an incinerator”.

“All Australian governments, national, state and territory, have recognised that limited legislation designed to protect ethnic, national and ethno-religious groups from defamation, harassment and intimidation strengthens, rather than threatens, democracy”, Mr. Jones said.

“It is a sad reality that a small number of individuals within Australia promote prejudice, discrimination, fear and harassment, and the law provides a measure of relief for victims of their actions,” Mr. Jones added.
“The publication of grotesque anti-Jewish defamation in the newspaper of a political party, which at the time had a federal senator and a number of members of state legislatures, could not be allowed to pass unchallenged”, Mr. Jones said.

Carl posts (or once posted — his account was suspended) on Stormfront as ‘Wodensvolk’, joining in March 2005.
