Following the success of the Historicising Whiteness conference of 2006, Re-Orienting Whiteness continues the critical engagement with whiteness studies. In conjunction with the Australian Critical Race and Whiteness Studies Association, Re-Orienting Whiteness 2008 invites scholars to explore the potential, or otherwise, of ‘whiteness’ to analyse the operations of ‘race’, past and present.
Our central aim is to bring whiteness studies into a closer conversation with other approaches to ‘race’, particularly those which have emerged from studies of colonialism and postcolonial theory. There has been remarkably little cross fertilisation between these areas of scholarship, despite the many obvious synergies between them. We seek to foreground this tension as a fundamental challenge for the field. We envision the conference traversing a variety of countries, periods, methodologies and theoretical concepts, bringing together scholars of diverse backgrounds and interests. Broadening out from the (settler colonial) context of the United States, we wish to explore how whiteness operated in colonial and non-colonial contexts across the globe.
Possible themes include:
* Indigenous perspectives on whiteness
* The politics of apology/assimilation/sovereignty/restitution/power
* Whiteness in the colonial/settler colonial encounter
* Whiteness in non-colonial contexts
* The gendered privileges of whiteness
* The chronology of whiteness: visibility/invisibility
* Cultures, representations, borderlands, bodies, transformations
* How important were global imperial processes to the operation of white power?
* Does whiteness even matter?

Events like this can only be dealt with [by] protests and brute force.” Similarly, ‘Kindred_Loyalist’ is of the opinion that “This is a Communist initiative. The war against the concept of race was largely initiated and sustained by Jews and Communists. Boas, Lewontin, and Gould were all Jewish anthropologists who made no secret of their hatred of “racism” and their belief that a scientist doesn’t have to approach his work objectively. Lewontin was also a Marxist. Many Jews working in academic areas outside anthropology have contributed to the destruction of race as a concept too. Professor and sociologist, Steven Seidman … stated “Whiteness is assumed…It is the default condition”. Noel Ignatiev is a Communist Jew and his site bears the heading “Abolish the White Race by any means possible”. Maurice Berger and Eric Foner, both Jews, are also active in “whiteness studies”. Kevin MacDonald‘s The Culture of Critique explains all this in much detail.” Paul Innes, the US-appointed moderator of SFDU, reckons that repeating the nutty performance of the Aryan Guard in Calgary, Canada last year would be a neat idea (although Paul admits he may not have the opportunity to grace the event with his own presence).

On reflection, there’s probably some truth to this. That is, it’s quite likely that, even if the venue for the neo-Nazi gathering had been known in advance, the possibility of there being any direct confrontation between those in attendance and those who object to such gatherings was, and remains, very low, Skin Heads Neither For Nor Against Racial Prejudice being one of many groups content to sit on the fence regarding neo-Nazi infiltration into punk and skinhead subcultures. Nevertheless, the two neo-Nazi groups responsible for organising the gig — both local franchises of US-based groups — aren’t taking any chances, and the venue remains a closely-guarded secret until the day of the event. In general, I think that violence — assuming a standard definition of the term, and in this case applying it to violence against persons — may be justified, ethically, when refraining from its use is likely to result in greater violence being enacted. Well, that’s what a utilitarian might say, anyway. A rights-based approach would, perhaps, result in some different conclusions being drawn, especially where ‘political violence’ is concerned. Your question is posed as a comment on a post concerning the potential actions of white supremacists at a forthcoming academic conference on ‘re-orienting’ (re-orientating) whiteness. In which context, it’s important to note that, in general, this mob couldn’t organise a piss-up in a brewery. That said, it’s certainly possible that a handful of racist twerps might rock up to protest. In this instance, I’d leave it up to the conference organisers to decide upon a response. Presumably, they’d simply wish for the conference to go ahead uninterrupted, and if thought necessary, inform the police that a handful of blokes are lurking around the entrance. And that would likely be the end of the story: the conference goes ahead, and the racist meatheads can boast on Stormfront about how they braved the Red Menace et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
More generally, on the one hand, I think violence should be avoided. On the other, I think there’s a legitimate right to self-defence. Both these positions I think are fairly conventional ones. Where I might depart from others’ understanding is locating the principal forms of violence in state structures, and calling for their abolition. Further, in recognising this as a radical shift in social structure and human consciousness, but a necessary one. Finally, in understanding that violence is not an exceptional state of affairs, but an omnipresent one.
PS. Ted Honderich, Political Violence, Cornell University Press, New York, 1976, is useful, especially in terms of locating a ‘philosophical analysis of terrorism’ — that is, ‘political violence’ — in the context of a discussion of inequality and oppression.
