The Still Crazy After All These Years World of the Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei

Or, to be precise, the “Conspiracy of Nuclei of Fire-Nihilists Sect” — to be confused with the Australian group “Conspiracy of Nuclei of Fred-Nihilists Sect”.

Athens anti-guerrilla case in ruins after new Nuclei of Fire attack

A new attack and communique by the Nuclei of Fire, targeting the Greek PM’s central rally in Athens, shatter any remaining credibility of the anti-guerrilla pre-election persecutions.

The already disputed credibility of the anti-guerrilla persecution of three 20 year old boys for their alleged involvement in the urban guerrilla group Nuceli of Fire Conspiracy (NFC), responsible for over 150 storm-attacks against state and capital targets as well as a recent bombing campaign (with no human injuries due to previous warning calls in all cases), has now all but collapsed after the NFC managed to surprise the Greek anti-terrorist office and the secret services by planting and igniting a bomb in the centre of the Prime Minister’s last and central pre-election rally, two days before national elections, in Athens. The bomb was pre-announced so the area was evacuated causing no human injuries but immense ridicule both for the security forces and the PM whose oration on the necessity to crush “youth violence” and restore order was punctuated by the explosion.

If that was not enough to dispute the arrests and the discovery of “the NFC safe-house”, the NFC promptly published an on-line communique that has received extended national coverage and brought shame on the outgoing government [“In a 10-page text that was posted on an internet site Saturday night, the “Conspiracy of Nuclei of Fire-Nihilists Sect” threatens more attacks on politicians, journalists, police and financial targets in the future.”]. In their communique the urban guerrillas denounce the arrests as nonsense and the arrested as “totally unrelated to [their] group”. According to the NFC any arrested of their guerrilla group is obliged to accept his or her participation in it. All 3 arrested have denied any involvement in the group, one even condemning the armed struggle as irrelevant to the revolution.

Moreover, in their long and politically thorny communique, the NFC underline that the only evidence at the hands of the authorities of any connection between their group and the arrested is the supposed existence of a “pressure cooker bomb” in the Chalandri house stormed by the police. The NFC argue that such bombs have been employed since the late 19th century by revolutionaries and cannot possibly be considered “the copyright or modus operandi” of their or any single organisation.

Oh yeah: ‘Who won’, they asked, ‘the election?’. I laughed, and said ‘PASOK’.

“Results from 97.53% of votes counted showed Papandreou’s Panhellenic Socialist Movement, or PASOK, storming to victory with 43.95%, with Karamanlis’ New Democracy trailing with 33.58% – the party’s worst electoral showing ever. The result gives PASOK a solid majority of 160 seats in the 300-member parliament, bringing it back to power after five years of conservative governance. Papandreou’s victory, along with a recent election win by socialists in Portugal, bucks a European trend that has seen a conservative surge in the continent’s powerhouse economies, including most recently in Germany, where Chancellor Angela Merkel won re-election last week” (Socialists celebrate Greek election, The Press Association, October 5, 2009). “The Communist party KKE occupied their customary third party position with over seven per cent of the vote. Far right Laos followed with over five per cent, leapfrogging over the Syriza coalition of the left which comes fifth at just over four per cent. The Greens garnered over two per cent of the vote which is unlikely to be enough to give them a seat in parliament” (Socialists win Greek election, RFI, October 5, 2009).

Who was Makhno and what did he stand for?
Vladimir Morozov
In Defense of Marxism
September 30, 2009

“To this day anarchists hold up Makhno as the true champion of the workers and peasants of Russia after the 1917 revolution. This myth ignores the real nature of the Makhnovite army and the social layers that it represented. Because Makhno did not base himself on the working class but on certain layers within the peasantry, he ended up with what amounted to a reactionary position.”

A fairly standard critique, prompted by Bakunin-knows-what, and unreferenced. The ‘International Marxist Tendency’ (IMT) is a Trotskyist mob, who for a brief period appears to have had some followers (follower) of late in Australia. Anarchism and the Movement for a New Society: Direct Action and Prefigurative Community in the 1970s and 80s
Andrew Cornell
Perspectives 2009

“The international anarchist movement was reborn on new footings in the wake of the global insurrections of 1968, nearly all of which were decidedly libertarian in character. In the United States, the decade that followed was a time of experimentation and consolidation, as a surprising variety of groups sought to develop and adapt different aspects of the anarchist tradition to contemporary conditions. Sam Dolgoff and others worked to revitalize the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), alongside new syndicalist formations like the Chicago-based Resurgence group and Boston’s Root & Branch; Bookchin’s Anarchos collective deepened the theoretical links between ecological and anarchist thought; the Fifth Estate drew heavily on French ultra-leftist thinking and began pursuing a critique of technology by decade’s end. Meanwhile, the Social Revolutionary Anarchist Federation connected individuals and circles across the country through a mimeographed monthly discussion bulletin. Just as influential to the anarchist milieu that has taken shape in the decades which have followed, however, were the efforts of the Movement for a New Society, a national network of feminist radical pacifist collectives that existed from 1971 to 1988.”

One of the products of the Movement was New Society Publishers. A number of NSP titles are available for purchase through Anarres Books.

Bakunin on religion:

With all due respect, then, to the metaphysicians and religious idealists, philosophers, politicians, or poets: The idea of God implies the abdication of human reason and justice; it is the most decisive negation of human liberty, and necessarily ends in the enslavement of mankind, both in theory and practice. (II)

If God is, man is a slave; now, man can and must be free; then, God does not exist. I defy anyone whomsoever to avoid this circle; now, therefore, let all choose. (II)

This contradiction lies here: they wish God, and they wish humanity. They persist in connecting two terms which, once separated, can come together again only to destroy each other. They say in a single breath: “God and the liberty of man,” “God and the dignity, justice, equality, fraternity, prosperity of men” – regardless of the fatal logic by virtue of which, if God exists, all these things are condemned to non-existence. For, if God is, he is necessarily the eternal, supreme, absolute master, and, if such a master exists, man is a slave; now, if he is a slave, neither justice, nor equality, nor fraternity, nor prosperity are possible for him. In vain, flying in the face of good sense and all the teachings of history, do they represent their God as animated by the tenderest love of human liberty: a master, whoever he may be and however liberal he may desire to show himself, remains none the less always a master. His existence necessarily implies the slavery of all that is beneath him. Therefore, if God existed, only in one way could he serve human liberty – by ceasing to exist.

A jealous lover of human liberty, and deeming it the absolute condition of all that we admire and respect in humanity, I reverse the phrase of Voltaire, and say that, if God really existed, it would be necessary to abolish him. (II)

Queens ‘terror’ raid hits G-20 anarchist

Queens ‘terror’ raid hits G-20 anarchist
Kati Cornell
New York Post
October 3, 2009

FBI anti-terrorism agents raided the Queens home of a self-described anarchist charged with tweeting protesters with instructions on how to evade police at the G-20 summit.

A dozen gas masks, liquid mercury, backpacks containing hammers and anarchist literature were among the dozens of items seized Thursday at the Jackson Heights home where Elliot Madison, 41, lives with his wife Elena, 39.

Madison is free on bail after Pittsburgh cops arrested him on Sept. 24 and charged him with hindering prosecution, criminal use of a communication facility and possessing criminal instruments.

Police tracked Madison and another man to a motel room at the Carefree Inn in Pittsburgh, where they discovered a makeshift communications center, according to a criminal complaint.

The two men were seated in front of personal computers and telecommunications equipment, wearing headphones and microphones and surrounded by maps, contact numbers and police and EMS scanners.

Cops claim they were using Twitter to direct the movements of protesters and update them on the location and actions of law enforcement.

The details of Madison’s recent arrest and Thursday’s search emerged yesterday as defense lawyer Martin Stolar asked a federal judge to stop authorities from reviewing confidential information contained in his client’s computers.

But Assistant US Attorney Andrew Goldsmith argued that some of the items raised alarm, including a pound of liquid mercury in the house, alongside “books about poisons” and a microscope.

The feds also found metal triangles that are used to puncture tires and two boxes of ammunition. Goldsmith said agents left a collection of machetes, samurai swords and daggers at the house, because they didn’t fall within the scope of the search warrants.

Stolar said Madison and his wife have a long history of working for the People’s Law Collective, a group he described as providing legal representation for protesters.*

In court papers, Stolar argued that the search is illegal and asked Brooklyn federal Judge Dora Irizarry to order the return of the property.

The judge issued a temporary order of protection stopping the feds from going through the material.

Neighbors said the house was swarming with agents during the 16-hour search, while helicopters flew overhead.

*“The New York People’s Law Collective is [was] a collective of activists who are also, organizers, law students, community and legal workers. We are not lawyers. We are people with knowledge of the legal system, its value and limits, and how it can be used for and against us. History and our own experiences demonstrate the need for legal resources offered from a radical perspective. Used in this way, the law is one tool among many for our movements.”

Alfredo Maria Bonanno in trouble (again)

Italian anarchist Alfredo has got himself arrest — again.

Anarchist bank robber caught
ekathimerini
October 2, 2009

A well-known Italian anarchist and a Greek man have been arrested in Trikala, central Greece, on suspicion of carrying out an armed robbery at a local bank.

Police sources named the men as Alfredo Bonanno, 72, and Christos Stratigopoulos, 46. Bonanno has served 18 months in jail for his 1998 essay called “Anarchist Tension” [PDF] and was also given a six-year term in 2003 for armed robbery and other crimes when he was found to be the ideological leader of an armed group. [See : The Marini Trial: Italian State Repression of Anarchist Revolt and Anarchist Responses, Venomous Butterfly Publications, 2003 (PDF); Chronology of events related to the Marini Trial (September 1994–April 2004).]

According to police, Stratigopoulos carried out the robbery at a branch of Piraeus bank on Thursday. He forced employees to hand over 46,900 euros, which he then apparently handed to Bonanno, who was waiting outside in a rented car. A witness noted the license plate of the vehicle and informed the police, who stopped the car on a road leading to Kalambaka. Officers found the stolen cash in the vehicle. Stratigopoulos was arrested in Kalabaka.

Bonanno is widely regarded as being one of the chief propagandists on behalf of the insurrectionary trend within anarchist thought. In Australia, the clarion call to action has been responded to by relatively few, but it did inspire Melbourne band the Cosmic Psychos to record the track ‘Go the Hack’ (1989), which manages to encapsulate the insurrectionist philosophy in a few minutes of bulldozer punk.

O Salvation! From Portland to Serbia…

FREE JEFF ‘FREE’ LUERS!

Hurrah! Jeff ‘Free’ Luers was ‘free’… for a few hours, anyway, before prison authorities decided that he should be caged again. “October 2, 2009 – this morning Jeff enjoyed a few hours of freedom, after being released early. Then in a bizarre turn of events he was taken back into custody because the prison had made a “mistake”. December 2009 is now his release date.”

FREE THE BELGRADE 5 6!

On September 3, 2009 — and in the days following — six members and associates of the ‘Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative’ in Belgrade, Serbia were arrested by Serbian authorities and charged with the crime of ‘international terrorism’. The six are alleged to have been responsible for spraying graffiti and throwing a Molotov cocktail at the Greek Embassy in Belgrade on August 25, 2009. The six deny the charges. Placed on 30-days detention by a court, that term is now due to expire…

The investigative phase of the case was meant to come to a close on the 28th, however people are still being questioned. Greek Embassy people who were supposed to testify did not show up.

A member of ASI was interrogated and the police are calling more of them in.

If the investigation concerns a crime which carries a sentence of more than 10 years in jail, the comrades may be held up to six months.

Although things are not certain, it looks as if the police have decided to prolong the case as long as possible. In this case, we call for the escalation of protests.

Protest actions have taken place in Bratislava, Czech Republic (September 7); Ljubljana, Slovenia (September 10), London, England / Sydney, Australia / Vienna, Austria and Warsaw, Poland (September 11); Zagreb, Croatia (September 14); Moscow and Kiev, Russia (September 15); Athens, Greece / Denver, United States and Hamburg, Germany (September 16); Berlin, Germany / The Hague, Holland / Sofia, Bulgaria and Thessaloniki, Greece (September 18); Komotini, Greece (September 19); Frankfurt, Germany and Skopje, Macedonia (September 25); London, England (September 28); Budapest, Hungary (September 29); Bern, Switzerland / Madrid, Spain and Oslo, Norway (October 2).

Sofia Papazoglou hospitalised after attack by neo-nazis in Athens

Folk singer hospitalised after attack by neo-nazis in Athens

October 1, 2009

Sofia Papazoglou, a popular folk singer, was attacked by members of the Golden Dawn neo-nazi party in Athens after throwing election leaflets handed to her in the garbage. The singer remains hospitalised with serious burns from use of unidentified acid spray and with impaired vision.

Sofia Papazoglou, a popular folk singer of the “entehno” genre known for her progressive politics, was attacked on Thursday 1st of October outside the metro station of Katehaki, in Athens, by ten members of the neo-nazi party Golden Dawn when she threw election leaflets handed to her by the thugs in the garbage.

The Golden Dawn was created in the 1980s by the convicted neo-nazi bomber Mihaloliakos at the orders of the imprisoned head of the military junta of 1967-1974 Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos. Since, the Golden Dawn has been waging a campaign of terror against the left wing and anarchists as well as immigrants, people of color and Jews. Nevertheless, as it comes under the explicit protection of EYP, the Greek secret services (the daily Eleftherotypia has published a pay-sheet of Mihaloliakos by EYP), the neo-nazi group has never been persecuted and is allowed to participate in national elections. [Eleftherotypia (Greek: Ελευθεροτυπία meaning “free press”) is a daily newspaper published in Athens (Greece).] As a clear indication of the above patron-client relation with the secret services, the election campaign booth of the neo-nazis was placed this year directly under the headquarters of the EYP, in Katehaki avenue, a few meters away from the main riot police camp of the Greek capital.

When Ms Papazoglou threw the racist leaflets in the bin, ten thugs attacked her with a still unidentified acid spray in the eyes and then proceeded to beat her up savagely. The police did not intervene and the folk singer was taken to hospital after the intervention of metro workers. Half an hour later the neo-nazis were dispersed by anarchists who arrived at the spot upon hearing the news of the new vicious attack.

Ms Papazoglou remains in hospital with impaired vision and serious burns and bruises on her body. The Golden Dawn denies involvement in the incident, decrying it as “rumors spread by dirty jews and freemasons” and “protectors of ecologists and greens”.

Jock Palfreeman : October 2009 Update

Jock Palfreeman is an Australian citizen, currently in prison in Sofia (Bulgaria). He is undergoing trial on a charge of murder and attempted murder, following a clash, in December 2007, between Jock and a group of right-wing football hooligans (the group were assaulting a Roma at the time of Jock’s intervention).

Jock’s most recent court hearing was on Monday, September 28.

Expert witnesses for the prosecution again failed to appear in court — which is somewhat unusual, given that all of those called upon by the prosecution and who failed to appear are state employees. In general, however, it’s not unusual for witnesses to fail to appear in court in Bulgaria, and trial cannot continue unless they do so. Consequently, depending on the circumstances, trial can take a very long time to complete.

Thus far, Jock has been held in prison, undergoing trial, for almost two years.

Delays in Jock’s trial have been numerous and ongoing, while Bulgarian media are apparently claiming that trial has been delayed as a result of the failure of defence witnesses to appear. In reality, both Greyham [?] and Lindsay Welsh — two key defence witnesses who were with Jock on the night — have already tendered evidence to the court.

A forensic report on clothing materials was officially submitted to the court, as were the findings of blood alcohol tests, and a report on the wounds Jock received during the course of the attack upon him in December 2007.

The person responsible for collecting some CCTV footage of the alleged assaults also submitted a report. He was not questioned (but may be in future).

Bulgarian media have been reporting that the available video footage of the clash is unusable and that, therefore, Jock is not implicated in any crime by such evidence. However, these reports fail to consider the fact that the prosecution has actually requested that the relevant video footage be thrown out. Further, this is because — it is claimed by the defence — that the same footage is able to demonstrate that Jock was attacked prior to there being any assault, by Jock, upon the victim, Andrei Monov (a fact also confirmed by previous testimony by members of the group Monov was with).

TO BE CONTINUED…
