Crassmas Trots

Temporarily unable to cast myself down the mine of information that is the Leftist Trainspotters list, I haven’t really been doing much to keep the Trot Guide in shape. Nevertheless, I’m pretty excited — tho’ also disappointed — to discover that the revolutionary artiste formerly known as the Democratic Socialist Perspective nee Democratic Socialist Party nee Socialist Workers Party has finally bitten the bullet and officially announced its dissolution into the Socialist Alliance.

Kinda.

IX. What will become of the DSP after January 2010

The DSP national executive is proposing that we convert the DSP into a non-caucusing tendency of opinion with the same aims and objectives as in the current constitution. It would be a tendency committed to furthering those objectives, to promoting the political ideas and traditions of the DSP as a contribution to socialist education and praxis in Socialist Alliance. But its members would be organising within the structures of Socialist Alliance and under the day-to-day leadership of Socialist Alliance bodies.

Our objective is to forge a new collectivity within SA but, at this stage, the national executive believes we still have to allow for the possibility of resuscitating the DSP as a disciplined, regularly caucusing and dues-collecting organisation at some later stage, only if it becomes necessary…

So. As of January 2010, the DSP will become a “non-caucusing tendency of opinion with the same aims and objectives as in the current constitution”. That is, a group of people with similar opinions within SA which doesn’t formally meet… but which may be called upon to resurrect itself, as a caucusing tendency, at some point in the future, “if necessary”.

I see.

Beyond this, according to Peter Boyle, only “minds hopelessly blinded by factionalism” refuse to acknowledge that, by going through this bizarre process, the DSP has not abandoned its commitment to revolutionary socialism. “And the sad truth is that those who slander us most loudly as “liquidationists” are themselves in practice liquidating revolutionary socialist politics by retreating ever more into sectarian dogmatism, sterile debating games and abstention from the real struggles of the working class.”

Ouch.

Presumably, this barb is directed at the splitters! belonging to the RSP: the Revolutionary Socialist Party. Which, as it happens, is having a conference in Sydney in January. By some strange coincidence, so is SA. Both parties draw their main ideological inspiration from Leninism and in particular its contemporary manifestations in the Bolivarian Revolutions in South America, especially under Uncle Hugo.

Anyways, some bloke called Allen Myers laments ‘The sad end of the DSP’ in the latest edition of the RSP’s zine Direct Action (December 2009).

What else?

Oh yeah: the funky mofos @ the Freedom Socialist Party site have whipped their site into shape; I dunno what’s happening @ Solidarity (the iSt Down Under), but one thing leads to another leads to the news that Jim Casey has been elected State Secretary of the NSW branch of the FBEU!

Finally, in the NSW ALP, a handful of remaining leftists have a whinge:

ALP members: we’ve lost faith
Brian Robins
The Sydney Morning Herald
December 14, 2009

THE Premier and Labor Party bosses have attempted to brush off ”disgusted and outraged” rank and file members who say they have ”besmirched” the party name. At a weekend meeting of 150 mostly left-wing ALP members representing more than 50 branches, a resolution was passed that ”the rank and file has lost faith in the parliamentary leadership of the NSW branch of the party”…

Apparently, “fair dinkum, ordinary, concerned and aggrieved members of the NSW Branch” of the ALP have threatened to remain very cross with the party leadership and to continue to hold meetings and to pass resolutions condemning the fact that their resolutions are being ignored by the party leadership.

Britain’s ruling elite express fear of “class war”
Chris Marsden
wsws.org
December 11, 2009

Class war eh?

ChristieBooks is the site maintained by Scottish anarchist Stuart Christie. His granny made him an anarchist; sadly, he failed to kill Franco. Still, there’s hundreds of great films on the site — including An Anarchist’s Story, a recent documentary on fellow Scottish anarchist Ethel MacDonald (1909–1960), the woman who became the English voice of anarchist radio in Barcelona. Further, Uncle Stuart’s writings on Spanish anarchism are essential reading.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE FOR CRASSMAS NO.1

A group has been set up on Facebook calling on UK consumers to refrain from buying product X and to instead purchase “foul-mouthed metallers” (The Sun) Rage Against the Machine’s 1992 pop hit ‘Killing in the Name’ so as to break the monopoly The X Factor has held on the #1 spot in the pop charts. Thus RATM are — or rather were — competing against not only The Muppets and a muppet karaoke star * (Joe McElderry) from shit TV show The X Factor [but also my ability to construct incomplete sentences: I win]. An English couple called Jon and Tracy Morter started the group to stop The X Factor from claiming the “Christmas Number One” for the fifth year in a row.

Several weeks ago, multi-millionaire host and showbiz hack Simon Cowell said the campaign ws stoopid; ten days that shook the UK pop world world later, he’s now “gutted”:

Cowell ‘gutted’ by chart defeat
UKPA
December 20, 2009

Pop mogul Simon Cowell said he was “gutted” at losing the battle for Christmas number one as Rage Against The Machine beat X Factor winner Joe McElderry in the fight for the top spot.

The rap metal act saw their expletive-ridden 1992 hit Killing in the Name sell 500,000 copies in one week and become the first ever Christmas number one that was available only through downloads.

Cowell offered his congratulations to the couple behind the campaign, Jon and Tracy Morter…

And congratulations also to Sony, the company what owns both RATM and The X Factor (tho’ the sweary 90s pop *s have apparently agreed to donate their share of the profits to homeless charity Shelter).

Of course, what I’d like for Crassmas is a copy of Bakunin: The Creative Passion by Mark Leier (Thomas Dunne Books, 2006).

antifa notes (december 20, 2009)

    Nazis. Silly. Old. Nazis.

    They’re funny!

This post rips-off antifa on Eddy Morrison, the (boo hiss!) bourgeois media on Wigan Mike, and the SPLC on Arfur Kemp…

Nazi drunk Eddy Morrison has engineered a split in the NF whilst simultaneously falling out with the BNP.

Read all about it!

(Steady) Eddy Morrison

Introduction

Despite the threat of the BNP making headway in the forthcoming general election, there appears to be ructions afoot in the weird world of nationalism. Lovable rogue Eddy Morrison is a long term fascist and alcoholic (a condition which he refers to as a ‘disability’ but is more like an ‘inability’) and held in suspicion by many on the far right. His relationships with various ‘players’ on the scene have been turbulent to say the least, joining any or all of the groupuscules that emerge from round the s-bend of far right politics and which often dissolve at best in acrimony and tears (Nationalist Alliance), at worst, in internecine murder (Combat 18, Wolf’s Hook White Brotherhood). He is currently involved in the splitting the NF in two.

Quick! Somebody call Bill White a wahmbulance!

Everyone’s favourite Hollywood Nazi Bill White — or William A. White — has been found guilty of talking shit on the, ah, Internets. His “Racist threats could mean 35 years in prison for the Roanoke neo-Nazi”:

Jury finds White guilty on 4 counts, not guilty on 3 counts
The Roanoke Times
December 18, 2009

Done in by his own words, Internet hatemonger William A. White was convicted this afternoon of threatening people from Virginia Beach to Canada.

The verdict, however, was not a total repudiation of White’s assertion that the First Amendment should protect his incendiary speech. Of seven counts against White, the federal jury acquitted him of three.

White, who will be sentenced later, could face up to 35 years in prison.

The leader of a Roanoke-based neo-Nazi group, White was returned to the city jail late this afternoon as a snowstorm swirled around the downtown federal courthouse where, for the past week and a half, the jury heard testimony about how he used the Internet and other means to terrorize total strangers with whom he disagreed.

Yet in the end, White’s own words led to his downfall…

Fancy.

Bonus Bonehead!

On December 16, Canadian bonehead Kyle McKee got himself arrest in Winnipeg. McKee was on the run for a coupla weeks while being sought by Canadian police in connection with a bombing in Calgary last month; the bombing was supposedly directed at a rival bonehead.

Auschwitz ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ sign stolen; ALP offers ‘Fair Work Sets You Free’ replacement

The Left protests when ministers and officials favour business mates or cruelly lock up refugees, but many of us have a vested interest in the status quo. As compensation for its authoritarian streak, the state has become a generous benefactor to progressives, either employing us to manage its utilities and programs for the marginalised, or making everyone from artists to community groups and scholars jump through hoops of red tape in a scramble for the next grant. But the state is more tar baby than magic pudding, leaving a residue of compromise and passivity on those too dependent on its patronage.

Uh-huh.

If you’re a middle-class progressive, your conscience may prick you as you suck on the government teat (everyone has their cross to bear).

If not…

First they imposed compulsory income management on Aborigines in the Northern Territory, and I did not speak out—because Noel Pearson said ‘only irresponsible behaviour would be affected’;
Then they imposed it on non-indigenous welfare recipients, and I did not speak out—because a Marxist in her youth, Jenny Macklin is a member of the Socialist Left faction of the ALP;
Then they came for the militant trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because jobs jobs jobs jobs jobs jobs jobs workings families working families working families;
Then they came for the middle-class progressives—nah, just kidding!

Indigenous welfare rules apply to all, Misha Schubert, The Age, November 25, 2009.

Oh yeah.

Auschwitz.

Police: Auschwitz ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ sign stolen
Monika Scislowska (AP)

WARSAW, Poland — The infamous iron sign bearing the Nazis’ cynical slogan “Arbeit Macht Frei” that spanned the main entrance to the former Auschwitz death camp was stolen before dawn Friday, Polish police said.

The heavy 5-meter-long (16-foot-long), 40-kilogram (90-pound) iron sign at the former Nazi death camp in southern Poland where more than 1 million people died during World War II was unscrewed on one side and torn off on the other, police spokeswoman Katarzyna Padlo said.

An exact replica of the sign — made by the museum after World War II — was immediately hung in place of the missing original to fill in the empty space inside the heads of ALP members, but all visitors were being informed about the theft, another museum spokesman, Pawel Sawicki, said…

Bonus Philosophy!

At the onset of the twenty first century work and production have become ends in themselves. The resulting material affluence is accompanied by increasing levels of stress, insecurity, depression, crime, and drug taking. Escalating production and consumption are also destroying the environment on which life itself depends. Yet employment has become such a priority that much environmental degradation is justified merely on the grounds that it provides jobs. And people are so concerned to keep their jobs that they are willing to do what their employers require of them even if they believe it is wrong or environmentally destructive.

The social benefit of having the majority of able-bodied people in a society working hard all week goes unquestioned, particularly by those who work hardest. Few people today can imagine a society that does not revolve around work. How did paid work come to be so central to our lives? Why is it that so many people wouldn’t know what to do with themselves or who they were if they did not have their jobs?

In this major new book, Sharon Beder unearths the origins and the practices of a triumphant culture of work in which the wealthy are respected and inequality is justified. Dr Beder shows that these values are neither natural nor inevitable. They have been actively promoted – through religious preaching, corporate propaganda, the education system, and socialisation – by those who benefit most from them.

Selling The Work Ethic provides an absorbing account and critique of this central aspect of modern capitalist society. Prompted by her conviction that humanity needs to unlearn and change these powerfully held but now pathological values if we are to reverse the declining quality of life in industrial society, Dr Beder illuminates the impasse we are now in.

tHe IsLaMiSaTiOn oF AuStRaLiA

Two new mosques have been announced for the suburbs of Auburn in Sydney and Newport in Melbourne.

In Auburn, some residents are not. happy. Bruce.

RESIDENTS are fighting a mosque and cultural centre they believe will become a headquarters for the strict Wahhabi sect of Islam in Sydney.

Auburn Council, in Sydney’s west, has outraged residents by approving the three-storey mosque with dome and minarets on a site occupied by a Depression-era Art Deco fire station.

The Australian Islamic Cultural Centre, which has links to Saudi Arabia and Wahhabism, plans to demolish existing buildings – including the fire station – and construct a mosque for up to 1000 worshippers, a library and a youth cultural centre with two levels of basement.

A petition demanding the council reverse its decision and preserve the heritage fire station in Harrow Rd is circulating in the suburb.

Activities planned for the complex include cultural and religious lectures, weddings, prayers, cultural, religious and language classes, fundraising, public speaking, Ramadan festivities and counselling, welfare and rehabilitation services…

~ Fears grow over ‘hardline’ mosque in western Sydney, Bruce McDougall, The Daily Telegraph, December 10, 2009.

The construction of the new complex is supposedly being spearheaded by Shafiq Khan by way of the ‘Australian Islamic Cultural Centre’. Shafiq (R. Abdullah) Khan is the Managing Director of the nearby Al Faisal College, an Islamic skool established in 1998. As reported by Marian Wilkinson (Revealed: the Saudis’ paymaster in Australia, The Sydney Morning Herald, September 10, 2005), Khan “stands with John HoWARd and Saudi royals, but his million-dollar dealings have angered many Muslims”.

Whatever.

If you like state-sanctioned violence — and let’s face it, only anarcholocos have a principled objection — Saudi Arabia kicks arse, and is a most excellent place for whippings and beheadings (especially of those bloody foreigners what commit all the crimes). 2007 was a record year for executions, but hopes are high for 2010 — and entry to “chop-chop square” is free!

Saudi Arabia uses public beheading as the punishment for murder, rape, drug trafficking, sodomy, armed robbery, apostasy and certain other offences. 2007 was the record year for executions with 153 men and three women executed. Forty five men and two women were beheaded in 2002, a further 52 men and 1 woman in 2003 and 35 men and a woman in 2004. Executions rose in 2005 with 88 men and 2 women being beheaded and then reduced to 35 men and four women in 2006. 102 people were executed in Saudi Arabia during 2008 but it is thought that two of these were by shooting in Asir Province.

The condemned of both sexes are typically given tranquillisers and then taken by police van to a public square or a car park after midday prayers. Their eyes are covered and they are blindfolded. The police clear the square of traffic and a sheet of plastic sheet about 16 feet square is laid out on the ground.

Dressed in either a white robe or their own clothes, barefoot, with shackled feet and hands cuffed behind their back, the prisoner is led by a police officer to the centre of the sheet where they are made to kneel facing Mecca. An Interior Ministry official reads out the prisoner’s name and crime to the crowd.

Saudi Arabia uses a traditional Arab scimitar which is 1100-1200 mm long. The executioner is handed the sword by a policeman and raises the gleaming scimitar, often swinging it two or three times in the air to warm up his arm muscles, before approaching the prisoner from behind and jabbing him in the back with the tip of the blade, causing the person to raise their head. Then with a single swing of the sword the prisoner is decapitated.

Normally it takes just one swing of the sword to sever the head, often sending it flying some two or three feet. Paramedics bring the head to a doctor, who uses a gloved hand to stop the fountain of blood spurting from the neck. The doctor sews the head back on, and the body is wrapped in the blue plastic sheet and taken away in an ambulance. Burial takes place in an unmarked grave in the prison cemetery.

Beheadings of women did not start until the early 1990s, previously they were shot. Forty three women have been publicly beheaded up to the end of 2007.

Most executions take place in the three major cities of Riyadh, Jeddah and Dahran. Saudi executioners take great pride in their work and the post tends to be handed down from one generation to the next.

How sweet.

As for Newport:

Hobsons Bay will become home to Australia’s largest Islamic community centre by late 2010, with plans in progress to build a $12 million complex including a mosque, education centre and library at Blenheim Rd Newport. Construction is expected to start in February.

~ Cop visits Newport mosque, James Twining and Nisa Terzi, Hobsons Bay Leader, December 15, 2009.

In both cases, fascist bottom-feeders have attached themselves — or attempted to attach themselves — to local campaigns against the mosques. In Sydney, the ‘Australia First Party’ has issued an amusing call-to-arms, while in Melbourne, new kid on the block ‘Nationalist Alternative’ has formed an alliance with a local residents’ association.

Hoelzer Reich : Update

On December 12, California-based clothing company Hoelzer Reich announced that it had severed all links to MMA. This announcement took place several days after the two leading MMA companies, Zuffa and Strikeforce, announced a ban on the company’s products, and — partly as a consequence — many of its sponsored fighters also jumped ship.

In summary, the Fourth Reich has lasted well short of 1,000 years.

Dana White Addresses Hoelzer Reich Ban Yet Questions Remain, Zak Woods, Watch Kallib Run, December 15, 2009. Woods continues to probe the process by which HR came to be able to assume such a prominent position within MMA, and in particular the UFC franchise.
