Australia

Jock Palfreeman is a 23-year-old Australian serving a 20-year term in a Bulgarian prison after being convicted, in December 2009, of the crimes of murder and attempted murder. Jock has always maintained that he acted in self-defence when, in December 2007, he witnessed two Roma men being violently assaulted by a group of fascist hooligans and intervened on their behalf, resulting in the death of one attacker and injury to another. His sentence is currently subject to an appeal. In Sydney, an action and film screening in support of Jock took place during the past week. Several days ago, on June 15, it was announced that last Thursday (June 10), Jock was, after many months, released from solitary confinement, and into the general prison population.

News of Jock’s case is slowly reaching a broader audience, and generating interest among sympathetic groups within and outside Australia and Bulgaria. There is also evidence of increasing concern among the Bulgarian public regarding the incidence of racially-motivated violence in the country, and the need for action.

JOCK Palfreeman, serving 20 years in Bulgaria for murder, could die in prison if prosecutors go ahead with a planned appeal.

The former Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview, student was found guilty in December of murdering Bulgarian law student Andrei Monov, 20, and wounding Anton Zahariev, 19, in a fight in 2007.

Palfreeman’s lawyers lodged an appeal within a week of the December verdict, saying it was based on incorrect evidence.

His brother Spencer Palfreeman said the family was expecting an appeal for a life sentence without parole from the prosecution, after the newly-released written judgement showed Palfreeman had been found guilty of murder by hooliganism.

Spencer said this had led the prosecution to claim the 20-year sentence had “not been harsh enough”, but they were yet to get a formal confirmation of an appeal.

“We’re not even angry, it’s just laughable,” he said. “We haven’t even had a chance to translate the statement from Bulgarian to English yet.”

Palfreeman’s lawyers would seek an amended verdict because the trial and documentation had been faulty, Spencer said.

He said police statements from Monov and Zahariev’s friends who witnessed the fight, some of which had initially supported Palfreeman’s story, had been changed twice.

A list of identically-written statements from each one of them claiming Palfreeman was guilty had been presented at the trial, and prosecution had refused to allow the initial statements to be shown, Spencer said.

“The verdict was not based on the truth to begin with,” he said. “Complete changes were made in statements.”

In local (and much more amusing) news, teenage fascist Scott Harrison has formally abandoned his short-lived attempt to pose as an ‘anarchist’ online, and instead thrown in his lot with the bizarros belonging to the Church of Creativity. The shift has proven to be an enormous boon to the Church in Victoria which, with the addition of Scott’s girlfriend, has catapulted its membership from 0 to 2. Sadly, Creativity’s gain is national anarchism’s loss, with another teenager, this one from Hamilton, left holding the bag. Undaunted by this setback, ‘National Anarchists AUS/NZ’ have recently taken to the kitchen to extoll the revolutionary potential of baking bread: “The more we take power away from government, corporations, and other outsiders, the more that our folk and community can benefit.” Or: “We must secure the existence of our bakeries and a future for White bread” [nationalanarchistausnz.wordpress.com/2010/06/14/bread/].

Of course, by siding with one of the two tiny splinters in the Church in Australia, Scott has effectively alienated its most vocal proponent, fellow/rival Reverend Patrick O’Sullivan. Fortunately perhaps, given O’Sullivan’s habit of sticking knives into other racialists, Scott is in Geelong, while Patrick stalks Melbourne. (See also : antifa notes (march 29, 2010).)

Speaking of knives — well, guns, actually — one of the three men police have accused of involvement in ‘Combat 18’ (and shooting at a mosque in Perth) is Bradley Trappitt. Bradley is innocent until proven guilty, obviously; curiously, he’s also friends with Welf Herfurth, the ‘leader’ of the dwindling ranks of ‘national anarchists’ in Australia. Like seemingly ever other Jew-hatin’ Australian, Trappitt (‘Aussie_Knight’) posted on the White supremacist website Stormfront (joining in November 2004), contributing some very moving poetry [stormfront.org/forum/t206672/] while also taking the opportunity to riff on some neglected aspects of modern German history: “You want to know who started the War… THE JEWS[!]” [stormfront.org/forum/t162628-6/#post1470826].

As for Herfurth, he’s also a Holocaust denialist, and in September — as Aryan Master of Racial Ceremonies — plans on welcoming to Australia fellow denialist Paul Fromm. Fromm is a Canadian, and like Herfurth has a long history of involvement in fascist organisations: last year he marched alongside the neo-Nazi ‘Aryan Guard’. In the United States, Fromm has been welcomed as an expert by Fox News but, given the difficulties Herfurth’s German kameraden have had in the past in entering the country — as well as those experienced by British figures such as Nick Griffin and David Irving — whether or not Australian authorities allow Fromm into the country is an open question.

In either case, the meeting which Fromm has been invited to address is the Sydney Forum, organised by members of the Australia First Party (and a handful of other racist cranks). This year’s event will undoubtedly be an interesting affair, and besides the question of Fromm’s attendance, the main item of interest will be which Sydney RSL club will have the privilege of boasting it provides a platform for neo-Nazis? Last year, Petersham RSL claimed the prize (past winners have included Bexley and Eastwood RSLs).

Notwithstanding the above, congratulations must go to the ‘Australia First Party’ on achieving Federal registration. The party is participating in local elections later this month, and will now be able to participate in state and Federal elections under its own brand.

Russia

On May 23, in the city of Ryazan, 25-year-old anti-fascist activist Kostya Lunkin [Konstantin Lukin] was ambushed by a group of neo-Nazis outside of his home. Beaten into a coma, Lunkin died in hospital on May 31, never having regained consciousness. Despite the existence of witnesses willing to testify against local neo-Nazis, police have been reluctant to bring charges, or to recognise the murder as being political in nature. In this sense, the investigation of Kostya’s murder by police follows a similar pattern to that of others, although the situation is complicated by the apparent fact that the father of one of the accused occupies an important position in the Russian government.

Also on May 23 (or possibly May 24), 28-year-old Moscow resident Dmitry Kashitsyn was attending a birthday party when it was attacked by a large group of neo-Nazis, armed with bottles, knives and other items. One of several party-goers injured, Kashitsyn died after being repeatedly stabbed; his father died of a heart attack a few days later.

Kostya and Dmitry join a long list of victims of fascist violence in the last few years, including but not limited to anti-fascist activists such as Iván Khutorskoy, Stanislav Markelov, Anastasia Baburova, Alexander Riukhin, Alexey Krylov and Feodor Filatov. The deaths of these men and women are in addition to an even longer list of immigrant and ethnic minority workers murdered by Russian fascists. In a statement expressing solidarity with Russian activists, antifascists in Spain note that:

One of the strongest international organizations in Russia is Blood and Honour. They possess a paramilitary structure, based on lessons taught to its leaders in the Balkans wars, and a large accumulation of weapons. Their modus operandi is the pursuit, capture and murder of ethnic, immigrant and related minorities and leftists. It has an action group called ‘Combat 18’. Recently, the group claimed that it would launch a wave of terror like that which occurred when a bomb was placed on a train from Moscow to Saint Petersburg… 39 persons died.

Deeply wary of the political possibilities presented by an emergent, militantly anti-fascist movement, the Russian state has responded by way of increasing prosecutions against selected fascist groups, while simultaneously cracking down on their opposition. Among the victims of this crackdown is the Moscow hardcore band What We Feel, which announced its dissolution in February, and blamed the government’s newly-enacted anti-extremism laws.

“¡Ay, ay, ay, no me gusta!” Boneheads on trial in Spain

In Spain, 18 (or possibly 19) members of the local Blood & Honour (Sangre y Honor) franchise are on trial, accused of inciting racial hatred and possessing illegal weapons. Last year, their comrades in the local Hammerskin franchise were unfortunate to have their association declared unlawful by the courts. (As in Australia, Hammerskins work very closely with B&H, who are holding their next mini-Nuremberg rally in Melbourne in September). According to the prosecution, inter alia, members of the group called for “seis millones de judíos más a la cámara de gas” (“six million more Jews to the gas chamber”) at a gig in February 2005. If found guilty, the boneheads face up to five years in jail for belonging to an association whose sole purpose is to ‘promote discrimination’ and to realise Hitler’s vision of a ‘White Europe’ (see : Blood and Honour es “violenta y peligrosa”, según la fiscal, El País, June 10, 2010).

Funnily enough, one of the accused, Jorge Vivar, is a police officer, who even posed for a police calendar! A key initiator of the legal action against B&H is the Movimiento contra la Intolerancia (see : Juicio al Odio Neonazi, May 24, 2010).

Belgrade Six Freed

BELGRADE — A group of six anarchists has been acquitted after being charged with throwing a Molotov cocktail at the Greek embassy last year.

The verdict came because of a lack of evidence against them, said the judges.

“The basis for the dropping of the charges is legal, not political. It was not proven that the indictees committed the crime,” stated Judge Dragomir Gerasimović.

The defendants Ratibor Trivunac (28), Tadej Kurepa (25), Ivan Vulović (25), Sanja Dojkić (20), Ivan Savić (26) and Nikola Mitrović (30) were initially charged with

international terrorism

but the prosecution changed the indictment to “causing general danger”.

They were accused of writing graffiti on the Greek embassy in Belgrade and throwing a firebomb at the building in August 2009.

They spent six months in custody due to the charges and the ensuing investigation.

Ark Tribe is a construction worker from South Australia. On Tuesday, June 15, he goes to court in Adelaide. Ark is charged with not attending a secret interrogation session conducted by the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) about a workplace safety dispute @ Flinders University. Ark has displayed courage–we need to display solidarity. Word on the street is that a tent embassy will be established outside of the ABCC HQ (533 St Kilda Road, Melbourne) from Tuesday.

June 21 marks the third anniversary of the ‘Northern Territory National Emergency Response’. On Friday, June 18, a rally has been organised to call upon the Federal Government to ‘Stop the Racist Intervention!’.

Introduced under HoWARd, and based upon the suspension of the Racial Discrimination Act (RDA), the Northern Territory ‘Intervention’ into Aboriginal communities has undergone some reform under KRudd. Critics argue that, under the new laws, all of the racist policies introduced by Howard in 2007 will remain in place, and affected individuals will not have access to the RDA to challenge these measures. The quarantining of welfare payments, for example, will remain compulsory. A recent detailed research report by the Menzies School of Health Research “found that income management was not associated with a sustained change in the sales of healthy food, soft drink or tobacco”.

Australian Jock Palfreeman is currently serving a 20-year prison term in Sofia, Bulgaria, having been found guilty of murder and attempted murder in December 2009. In February 2010, Jock was placed in isolation for an indefinite period while an appeal against his sentence is being processed by the courts.

Background

In December 2007, Jock witnessed a group of men assaulting two Roma (“Gypsies”) in Sofia. Jock went to the aid of the Roma men and interrupted the assault. The men were able to escape, but the gang continued their vicious attack on Jock. Following the fight, one member of the gang (Andrey Monov) was killed and another (Antoan Zahariev) injured. Jock maintains that he tried to escape the violent gang, and was forced to act in self-defense.

Judge Provides Written Verdict, May 29, 2010: “After 5 months the senior judge in Jock’s case has finally handed down his reasons for the unacceptable verdict he delivered in December of 2009. The document is in Bulgarian and is currently being translated into English. Only now can Jock’s file be sent to the appeal court and an appeal date set. We do not have a date for the appeal as yet…”

Argentina opens dirty war torture garage trial, Bridget Huber/AP, June 3, 2010:

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — From the street, it was an unremarkable auto-body shop in a busy middle-class neighborhood.

Behind its metal garage door, Automotores Orletti was a tactical operations center for Operation Condor, a coordinated effort by South America’s dictatorships to eliminate dissidents who sought refuge in neighboring countries.

Bound, blindfolded prisoners were scattered on the oil-stained concrete floor among disabled cars and machinery. Engines ran to mask the screams as prisoners were given electrical shocks and hoisted on pulleys, then submerged headfirst in water — torture they called “the submarine.”

Sandro Soba was just 8 years old when he and his family — who sought refuge in Argentina from the Uruguayan dictatorship — were detained and taken to Orletti. Soba saw his father suffering from bruises and burns, barely able to speak or see, his eyes crusted with pus.

Soba and his mother and siblings were returned to their native Uruguay. They never saw Adalberto Soba alive again. For years, the son resisted sleep.

“I was afraid to close my eyes and forget the details of what I had seen,” he told The Associated Press. “I knew I would need to tell someone one day, so I could understand where they had taken us and where I had seen my father for the last time. And so there could be justice.”

Soliciting murder accused pair are ‘proud neo-Nazis’

Two men spread racist messages with a goal of encouraging the “eradication of ethnic minorities from Britain”, a court has heard.

Michael Heaton, 42, of Manchester, and Trevor Hannington, 58, of south Wales, are accused at Liverpool Crown Court of urging people to kill Jewish people…

On the charges against Mike, The Daily Telegraph (Neo-Nazis ‘urged eradication of all ethnic minorities’ on Aryan Strike Force website, June 11, 2010) has further deets:

…The prosecutor said Heaton made more than 3,000 posts on the ASF website between January and June 2008, before he had a “bust-up” with the organisation and created his own, The British Freedom Fighters.

The website changed its name to Legion 88 and then Wolfpack, before it was closed down.

Mr Edis explained that the number 8 refers to the eighth letter in the alphabet, H. So 88 stands for HH, as in Heil Hitler, a common greeting for neo-Nazis.

Both men used a number of monikers when they posted their comments on the website. Heaton called himself Wigan Mike, and then later Lenny. Hannington gave himself the names Fist, Lee 88 and Paul.

The prosecutor said: “These are the descriptions they gave themselves. It’s how they wish to be named.”

In addition to phantasising about a Fourth Reich, Wigan Mike has also apparently been involved in the ongoing antics of the E, E, EDL. A video of the E, E, EDL rallying in November last year in Wrexham… in er, Wales… LOL… supposedly shows Mike wearing a hoodie (0:11). He also went to an E, E, EDL rally in July 2009.

Whether or not Best Facebook Friends Forever Mike is found guilty as charged, his case and that of his co-defendant naturally brings to mind the earlier trial, and many tribulations, of Simon Sheppard and Stephen Whittle, aka ‘The Heretical Two’, “the first Britons to be convicted of inciting racial hatred online” (see : nutzis are W E I R D : Sheppard & Whittle Go to Jail, July 11, 2009).

…In the past, through the meddling of Zalmay Khalilzad and Hamid Karzai as representatives of UNOCAL, the US dealt with the Taliban and pumped tens of millions of dollars into their pockets. Today if the Taliban once again comes to power, the US will easily “work” with them and prefer their bloody and suffocating rule of Afghanistan to an independent, pro-democracy and pro-women’s rights government, because the US counts on them as the most loyal group to safeguard its interests in the region. The Taliban also will not forget that the US was their creator, trainer and mentor through Pakistan’s ISI god-fathers.

The current conflict between the US, Taliban, and Northern Alliance is in fact a family matter between them which will be solved sooner or later. When that happens, the ranks of friends and enemies of our people will become clear and the illusion spread by pro-Taliban, pro-April 27 and April 28 treacherous intellectuals will be countered. Under such conditions, it is the duty of pro-independence, pro-democracy and pro-women’s rights intellectuals to increase their organized efforts for a coordinated uprising of our people against all traitors to Afghanistan.

Let the puppet mafia government of Karzai bring together all its agents in the “Peace Jirga” and similar ridiculous shows and by organizing luxury meetings, dance over the dead bodies of our innocent people, but the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA), alongside the aggrieved Afghan people thinks that such deceitful games mean throwing salt on the wounds of our people caught in the US/NATO bombings, insecurity, poverty, unemployment and desperation all over Afghanistan.

A “glorious day for the Netherlands”

A “glorious day for the Netherlands” is apparently how the freedom-loving Geert Wilders has described the outcome of the Dutch election (Liberals take narrow lead in Dutch election, Michael Steen, Financial Times, June 10, 2010), referring to the fact that his party, the Partij voor de Vrijheid (Party for Freedom), looks set to increase its representation in the 150-seat Dutch Parliament from 9 to 22. Partial vindication, perhaps, for his party’s fierce opposition to Dutch Muslims/the Islamification of the Netherlands, but also to all them foreigners, especially Moroccans / Who are on the dole / And stealing our jobs. In addition — and more importantly — the result opens up the possibility, however unlikely, of the liberty lobby entering into a coalition government with the Liberals (Chaotic race to form Dutch coalition after narrow poll, BBC, June 10, 2010).

In Australia, such an approach has appalled some few liberals among the Tories (most famously, VIPs such as Malcolm Fraser and, recently, Petro Georgiou), but the mildly psychotic form of xenophobia which has proven to be such a boon to blonde careerists such as Wilders will undoubtedly be put to work at the next Federal election by The Mad Monk (and already has). Joining the Tories in the Theatre of Cruelty will be a semi-reluctant ALP: still, presumably, under KRudd, but sooner-or-later being steered by Comrade Gillard. In which context, it’s worth recalling that the policy of mandatory detention of asylum seekers was introduced in 1992 under the previous Working Families’ regime by the ‘Socialist’ Gerry Hand (now busy pursuing a career in the mining industry) — the location of these centres not only in the towns but the deserts and even in foreign territories a policy which has won bi-partisan support.

As for Old Holland, The Biggest Loser in the election was the Christian Democrats (followed by the Socialists), while significant weight gains were achieved by GroenLinks and Democraten 66. While it’s a little premature to start reading too much into the results — and my skills at haruspicy are a li’l rusty — to the extent that they reflect popular opinion, it should be noted that the polarisation of public opinion — along with disagreements among elites and widespread economic dysfunction — is generally considered to form one of the pre-conditions for the emergence of fascism as a mass movement. Fingers xed, as things fall apart, and the centre cannot hold, sheer anarchy will be loosed upon the dying bourgeois world.

Pope to Abdicate, King to Marry Mae West

The Kate Sharpley Library has re-published Albert Meltzer’s autobiography I Couldn’t Paint Golden Angels: Sixty Years of Commonplace Life and Anarchist Agitation.

I thought this was pretty funny (note that culture-jamming was invented by sound-collage artists in the 1980s, or possibly by French intellectuals in the 1950s):

The one in the Freedom Group most in touch with Bohemia was Charles Lahr, a German anarchist who had come to London to avoid military service and stayed forty years. At first there was a suspicion by the police that he had come to shoot the Kaiser, who had unwittingly decided to pay England a visit at the same time, though he did not stay so long. Charlie was shadowed by Special Branch until one cold night he took pity on the detective staying outside the bakery where he worked, and came out to explain to him that the baker himself took sufficient precautions to see none of his nightworkers got away before time either to go playing cards or shoot visiting potentates according to their taste. A few years later the war broke out and he was interned in Alexandra Palace as an enemy alien and was interviewed by the same detective. ‘You thought I’d come to shoot the Kaiser,’ chuckled Charlie. ‘Pity you didn’t,’ said the detective in a decided change of position.

In his Bloomsbury bookshop in the twenties and thirties, Charlie had been a focus point for the literary set, a few of whom lingered on when I first met him. Charles Duff was one of them. I think he worked in the Foreign Office at the time but he was an authority on the Castilian (and possibly the Catalan) language, like Allison Peers. Both of them had written school textbooks I was using. He was intrigued at my passing on my Castilian lessons to Billy Campbell so he could talk with his Basque girl friend in her own tongue without either of us realising it was a separate language.

In those days newsbills used to announce the startling events of the day more prominently than they do now and they were mass printed. Charlie had a trick of slicing them in the middle and sticking them together again — to make up some such headline as Pope to Abdicate or The King to Marry Mae West. On the 20th anniversary of the Zeppelin shot down at Cuffley, there was to be a memorial service to which distinguished local German residents were invited. Some less than knowledgeable or perhaps cynical Embassy official had sent an invitation to Charlie. He turned up as the herrenvolk had solemnly entered the church, top hats on arms, and set up a soapbox newsstand with a saucer full of coppers, and the banner headline Hitler Assassinated — needless to say, with no papers to back it.

As the procession solemnly came out, von Ribbentrop among them, they looked at the bill and dashed helter skelter for the railway station. When the train came in with the evening paper every copy was grabbed by Embassy officials to the protests of the station master, while indignant shouts came from people pulled out of telephone booths by impatient Nazis wanting to use the phone, but the news of that happy event did not appear for another ten years or so.

Welsh Defence League in Cardiff // Australian Defence League @ Cronulla … LOL

Protest against Islamic Terrorism[:] exact date and time to be confirmed. Members of the English Defence League and other UK groups will be flying over in support and working closely with our Aussie counterparts to promote this demo against the biggest threat to mankind since the Nazis.

ROFLMAO.

After spearheading a risible attempt to whip up anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiment in Melbourne in April, the keyboard commandos belonging to the ‘Australian Defence League’ (ADL) have declared that they’ll be journeying to Cronulla in Sydney later this year, a few months short of the fifth anniversary of the racist pogrom / ‘White Civil Uprising’. Coming along for the ride will (supposedly) be members of the E, E, EDL, including level boss ‘Tommy Robinson’, and perhaps even an Australian or two, who knows?

Facebook really does generate a wave of stoopid.

As for Mr Robinson, he plays a *ing role in the EDL (English Defence League), a potted history of which was recently published in The Guardian (‘English Defence League: new wave of extremists plotting summer of unrest’, Matthew Taylor, May 28, 2010). “Forged on football terraces and targeting Muslim communities, rightwingers return to the streets in an increasingly violent form” is the byline, a development which, given the overall failure of the BNP at the ballot box recently, poses some interesting questions regarding the future of the British far right.

TBH, I’ve no idea why a racist teenybopper from Perth named Jack wants to import an army of whingeing Poms to protest against “Islamic extremism, immigration and other important issues that concern Australians” (such as, um, “Islamic extremism in our own backyard, uncontrolled immigration, political correctness gone mad and government enforced multiculturalism which creates anger”). Further, it’s extremely unlikely that an ultra-nationalist movement could be forged from among those who occupy Australian football (or soccer, or rugby) ‘terraces’ and — notwithstanding, perhaps, the yoof belonging to such online formations as the ‘Southern Cross Soldiers’ — in the absence of any other equivalent body…

What’s the matter with kids these days, anyway?

The relationship between the EDL and other rightwing groups has been a turbulent one, with the BNP, for example, publicly distancing itself from the organisation, on the one hand, while at the same time having current and former members play key roles within it, on the other. One interesting recent development has been the announcement of a Jewish division (see : ‘Shema Israel!’: The EDL Jewish Division, Malatesta, libcom, June 3, 2010). Otherwise, Malatesta marks the first anniversary of Defensive Manoeuvres in the Park here.

“Welsh” Defence League

Despite some difficulties, a number of which remain unresolved, the English Defence League appears to be thriving in a way that the ‘Scottish’ and ‘Welsh’ Defence Leagues are not (see, for example : Stunning victory for Scottish Defence League in Edinburgh, February 21, 2010). Thus the uneasy alliance of various football firms which provide the EDL with its foot-soldiers appears to come under greater pressure the further the League moves away from London.*

The protest by the ‘Welsh [sic] Defence League’ in Cardiff on the weekend (June 5) would seem to be a case in point, with members of the ‘Soul Crew’ — a firm linked to the Welsh football club, Cardiff City — being uninterested in joining with the English hools bussed into Cardiff for the occasion (and seemingly only in order to be given a brief, guided tour of the city centre by local police). The League rally attracted perhaps as many as one or two hundred; the counter-rally was several times larger (some sources claiming one or two thousand attended), and seems to have included at least some Soul Crew members. In any event, Viv Smith assumes credit for the debacle on behalf of ‘Unite Against Fascism’ (Socialist Workers Party) in ‘Welsh Defence League forced to retreat in Swansea and Cardiff’ (Socialist Worker, No.2204, June 5, 2010).

soul crew the shame of Wales and the UK

Fuelled by English arrogance, one upset EDL supporter established a Facebook page — titled ‘soul crew the shame of Wales and the UK’ — dedicated to shitting on the Soul Crew: “today cardiff city, soul crew turnt [sic] on their own people of the UK and all that British people stand for … hang your heads in shame and swim away swim away”. The page was soon abandoned, but not before the author was able to mash the following into his keyboard:

cardiff soul crew made their intentions clear when they stood side by side with the muslim enermy [sic] and attacked their very own people … in my eyes this makes them worse than what we are fighting against and a disgrace to call themselves Welsh let alone British

The anonymous fascist meathead responsible for publishing the page also provides a soundtrack to his silly: ‘Hang Your Heads In Shame’ by neo-Nazi Oi! band Strikeforce UK. Formed in 2001, the band, like the WDL, is from England (Newcastle). Funnily enough, the band’s album We Don’t Run featured the smash hit ‘Kick Racism Into Football’.
