Long live social democracy! Youth out of Copenhagen!

Ra ra ra, we’re going to smash the oiks!

In Copenhagen, armed thugs in blue, declaring “anarchy is a fag”, have arrested over 400 people — apparently the largest number of arrests at any single event in Danish history — for attempting to obtain a little breathing space, and a new ‘youth house’, in what’s ostensibly their city; an action which follows the eviction of the squatted social centre Ungdomshuset (Youth House) earlier in the year (Danish clash sparks mass arrests, BBC, October 6, 2007). The Ungdomshuset was an historic landmark squire, famous place, say no more, dating back to the early twentieth century, “SOLD!” out by the social democratic-controlled city council to a Christian cult who, in an attempt to exorcise the free spirits dwelling in the building, completely demolished it. Given the fact that something like 4,000 people took to the streets again today, it appears likely that greater force will be required to fully crush the spirit of youthful rebellion.

For up-to-date schnews in English; see also ‘Copenhagen police clash with rock-throwing youths seeking to occupy vacant building’, AP, International Herald Tribune, October 6, 2007; Hundreds of youths face charges after clashes with police in Copenhagen, AP, International Herald Tribune, October 7, 2007. Mick Armstrong of Socialist Alternative has denounced the fact that some of the hundreds arrested were Germans, Swedes, Finns, Norwegians as well as some from Britain, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland and Turkey. Armstrong stated that “These people are simply provocateurs that open up protests to police repression. In Europe their ranks have been riddled by police agents and fascists… [they are] football hooligans who travel the world looking for violence. The left should offer no comfort to these crazies. We should do whatever we can to isolate them. They are wreckers.”

Class War: Oh I say! Steady on old bean!

From Henley to Notting Hill: Class War is on the move again
Ian Jack
The Guardian
Saturday October 6, 2007

The anti-rich movement has Cameron in its sights, but the warriors’ weapons have lost their edge

Next month, on Saturday November 3, a demonstration will head for David Cameron’s house in Notting Hill; just possibly, he may be prime minister by then. The postcard from the promoters, Bash the Rich, has on one side a ragged-looking boy (actually the boy from Ken Loach’s Kes) sticking up two fingers at members of Oxford’s Bullingdon Club (young Cameron second from left) in their dress shirts and tails. The other side has a picture of Cameron with “parasite” across his forehead. There’s a list of what the protest is against, with a cross against gastropubs, swanky brasseries, yuppie lofts, gentrification, posh estate agents, gated communities and Lord Snooty. What does the protest want? A tick marks real boozers, affordable housing and public spaces. “Toffs out!” in big letters. “Old Etonians fuck off!”…

Oh, and props to Vents for informing the Revolver mob about the boycott last night. Now go buy his album! (Incidentally, this record is available in the foyer. Some of us gotta live as well, y’know… etcetera.)

Kevin Andrews: Untamed and Unashamed

Crikey! The Wicked Witch from Ipswich, Pauline Hanson, reckons Kevin Andrews may be on to something with his new immigration policy. Needless to say, so does Another Liberal Party (Labor backs African ban, Herald Sun, October 4, 2007). But what’s it all about, anyway? I asked Andrews, and in an exclusive to slackbastard, here’s what he had to say:

POLICY ON IMMIGRATION:
Stop future immigration of Africans to Australia.

WHY?
Uneducated, violence-prone Africans are called a minority group within the African diaspora. That is not the case as Africans believe that it is their cultural right to solve problems through violence.
I am far from being alone in this belief. It is not a racist or political statement but a statement of cultural difference, and is a fact and fanatical!
Take an inter-departmental committee made up of very senior people from a range of Federal Government departments, some with law degrees, spending time looking at this over a period of time, or when I go out and talk to various groups getting feedback about this all the time. So, there’s a range of evidence in relation to the matter, I don’t think anybody really denies that this is a challenge. It’s really a matter of how we respond to that challenge and putting our head in the sand and pretending it’s not there is not going to help the people concerned and it’s not going to help Australia.
We have already experienced fanatical unemployment and violence by Africans in Australia. It must be stopped!
Australians do not want fanatical and cultural ideals forced on them!

So there you have it. Kevin Andrews: untamed and unashamed.

Skin Cancer (Arf arf)

‘Skin Cancer’

Willamette Weekly
October 3rd, 2007

“A white supremacist group comes to Portland to celebrate its 20th anniversary.”

If you’ve never heard of Hammerskin Nation, it’s fair to say the group coming to Portland this weekend for a three-day music festival to celebrate its 20th anniversary is about as racist as they get.

The group’s website boasts Hammerskin Nation plans to host at least 100 people at an undisclosed Portland location for Hammerfest 2007 from Friday to Sunday, Oct. 5-7.

Hammerskin Nation didn’t return WW’s email request for an interview, but a visit to hammerskins.net reveals that its members advocate “white power and the preservation of the white race.” The group, which [boneheads] started 20 years ago in Dallas, Texas as the Confederate Hammerskins, concentrates its hatred on Jews and people of color, sexual minorities and, most recently, immigrants and people of Middle Eastern descent.

Portland’s Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism and Fascism, an activist group started last month in response to Hammerfest, places Hammerskin Nation in the “gray area” between a regular street gang and a political organization.

Despite its liberal reputation, Portland has had patches of support for white supremacy, spawning its own murderous white-power history with the 1988 bludgeoning death of Ethiopian immigrant Mulugeta Seraw at the hands of [boneheads], and leading to the establishment of its own white supremacist group in the mid 1990s—Volksfront.

Portland State University sociology prof Randy Blazak, chair of the Portland-based Coalition Against Hate Crimes, would be surprised if Volksfront’s card-carrying members topped 50.

“They’re probably getting smaller all the time,” he says.

Blazak says Hammerskin Nation might have picked Portland for its event because groups like it have long looked to the region for the so-called “Northwest Imperative.” The imperative is the two-decade-old idea started by the white supremacist group Aryan Nations that Oregon, Washington and Idaho will someday secede to create an autonomous Aryan homeland.

But the more likely practical reason, says Blazak, is that Volksfront invited them. Blazak says Hammerskin Nation and Volksfront are essentially the same organization. “They’ve been partnering up for a couple of years now,” he adds.

Volksfront also didn’t respond to WW’s email request for an interview.

Portland police are gearing up for Hammerfest ’07, says police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schmautz, though he won’t say what exactly their action plan is. But Schmautz does say police “will take appropriate action,” including arrest if merited, if one of the groups “advocate a crime.”

Four years ago, two men whom prosecutors believed were associated with Hammerskin Nation were convicted for attacking a black teenager before an underground rock concert in Hillsboro. The two men were sentenced to a year in prison.

This Saturday, Oct. 6, a rally in opposition to Hammerfest ’07 will begin at 1 pm in Lents Park, on the corner of Southeast 92nd Avenue and Holgate Boulevard.

“In my mind, this isn’t about direct opposition or response to these hate mongers,” says Jonathan Shields with the Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism and Fascism, the group putting on the rally. “It’s really about community building.”

Note that while the Hammerskins’ 20th anniversary celebrations have generated some minor media coverage in Portland (US), the fact that next week in Melbourne (Orstraya) a similar-sized grouping of boneheads is expected to gather has elicited not a single skerrick of interest from the corporate / state media. This despite the fact that there has been a recent upsurge in anti-Semitic activity in Melbourne, that the gig is being organised by the local Hammerskins franchise in conjunction with another neo-Nazi network, Blood & Honour, that is banned in Germany and Spain, that the gig is likely to be the very last one for Fortress, one of the premiere neo-Nazi skinhead bands of the last decade (whose hometown happens to be Melbourne), that one of the bands scheduled to play the Portland gig, Blood Red Eagle, comes from Newcastle, NSW and played at last year’s Ian Stuart Donaldson memorial gig at The Birmingham Hotel in Fitzroy, that a foreign group of neo-Nazis is scheduled to play the gig, or even that just a few weeks ago The Age ran an article about international neo-Nazi muzak networks (Andrew McCathie, ‘Neo-Nazis use music to spread vicious message’, September 8, 2007).

See also : Assaf Uni, ’17 years after German reunification, xenophobia renews East-West divide’, Ha’aretz, October 2, 2007 (“BERLIN – Without knowing it, the three Greek citizens who stopped for gas last week in the east Berlin borough of Pankow crossed a virtual line separating the city’s safe areas for foreigners and the dangerous ones. The three – two men and a woman – were attacked in the gas station by a group of [boneheads] who beat and kicked them, shouting abuses. The men had to be hospitalized…”); Intelligence Report, No.127, Fall 2007; for light relief, ‘The Oh-Really Factor: Fox ‘Expert’ Decries Bogus Lesbian Gangs’ by Susy Buchanan and David Holthouse is an absolute corker!

Heart of Darkness

Update : Millionaire blabbermouth, professional boofhead and Liberal Party poodle Neil Mitchell expresses support for Andrews and rooly deep concern (characteristic of a landlord) for the residents of Dandenong, Springvale and Noble Park in Above the law in the suburbs (Herald Sun, October 4, 2007); not, surprising as it may seem, an account of “the leaked police report [which] has questioned the future of a senior sergeant accused by lawyers of running a regime of “racially motivated police violence” against local African youths at Flemington police station”, but rather claims by a bottle-shop owner and three policemen that, contra the Victoria Police’s own statistics, Sudanese refugees “choose not to adapt to the Australian way of life and more annoying they do not like to abide by our laws”.

Two Wongs don’t make a White and too many Blacks spoil the broth.

Or something.

Following his much-lauded success in protecting Australian citizens from the malevolent Dr Mohammed Haneef, Minister for Immigration & Citizenship Kevin Andrews has announced Government plans to significantly decrease the number of African refugees admitted to Australia, from 70 percent of the total of 13,000 refugees two years ago to just 30 percent in the coming year. Given that something like 4,000 have already been admitted into Australia as refugees, this effectively means that no more black refugees will be entering the country until at least July next year.

According to Andrews, the reason for this is that African refugees fail to ‘integrate’ into Australian society. Thus:

We know that there is a large number of people who are young, that is in their teens and in their early 20s, often young men. We know that they have on average, low levels of education and lower levels of education than almost any other group of refugees that have come to Australia. And by low levels I mean, we’re talking about grade 2 and grade 3 primary school levels by way of education. We know that many of them, indeed if not most of them, have spent up to a decade in refugee camps and they’ve spent much of their lives in very much a war torn conflicted situation. And then on top of that they have the challenges of resettling in a culture which is vastly different to the one which they came from. Modern Australia, modern urban Australia largely, is vastly different from the conditions that people have come from in many of the countries, particularly in the Horn of Africa. And that’s played out in terms of young people who’ve got a low level of education, who therefore find it more difficult to get jobs, and come from a different culture from what we’re used to in Australia.

Contra refugees from the Horn of Africa, Andrews studied arts/law at the University of Melbourne, before completing a Master of Laws at Monash in 1979. Prior to selflessly entering Parliament in 1991, he was a practicing barrister, even winning an Australian Young Lawyer of the Year Award. And it’s precisely because of these qualities that Andrews is able to protect the residents of Bulleen, Doncaster, Doncaster East, Donvale, Nunawading, Park Orchards, Ringwood Nth, Templestowe, Templestowe Lower, Warrandyte, Warrandyte South, Warranwood and Wonga Park from suffering the consequences of the failure of these poorly-educated Africans to integrate into suburbs such as these.

Speaking of protecting the public, as in the case of the brown-skinned Haneef, Andrews has sensibly refused to release the evidence upon which he has arrived at his decision. Instead the Minister has simply noted that “an inter-departmental committee made up of very senior people from a range of… Federal Government departments… came to that conclusion”.

In all probability, like Andrews, a number of these very senior people also have law degrees, so it makes sense to trust their judgement.

Typically, however, Andrews’ decision has been cynically interpreted as a threadbare attempt to appeal to the kind of racist sentiment Pauline Hanson expressed to the media last December:

“We’re bringing in people from south Africa at the moment, there’s a huge amount coming into Australia, who have diseases, they’ve got AIDS,” Ms Hanson told news agency AAP. “They are of no benefit to this country whatsoever, they’ll never be able to work. And what my main concern is, is the diseases that they’re bringing in and yet no-one is saying or doing anything about it.”

Obviously, Hanson got it wrong. The problem with Africans is not that they’re disease-ridden, it’s that they’re mostly young, fleeing from war-torn countries, and very very few, if any, have law degrees (let alone an Australian Young Lawyer of the Year Award).

Not surprisingly, such evidence of a marked inability to integrate is not enough to satisfy the meddling United Nations, who’ve launched yet another assault on Australian sovereignty:

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees said refugees should be accepted based on their need for protection, not their ability to integrate. “UNHCR is not aware of any empirical evidence that suggests there are integration difficulties associated with Sudanese,” a commission spokeswoman said. “Indeed, we note previous comments by the Victorian police … that Sudanese people are under-represented in crime statistics.

What this spokeswoman fails to realise, as Andrews has already indicated, is that a number of very senior people know better. Further, Prime Minister HoWARd has confirmed that the policy is not in any way, shape or form ‘racist’; neither too heavy nor too light; too black nor too white; but just Right: “It’s not in any way racially based but the program is just going to be rebalanced and one of the consequences of that is the reality that there will be no more people coming from Africa until at least July of next year,” Mr HoWARd told ABC Radio.”

Nevertheless, as a result of this kind of unjustified criticism, Andrews has kindly elaborated on the reason for this restriction in the refugee intake, and pinpointed Sudan as being a particular problem. As reported by the ABC, “Just last week 18-year-old Sudanese refugee Liep Gony died after he was beaten up near a railway station in Melbourne’s south-east”.

That the two charged over his murder happen not to be Sudanese is clearly irrelevant, as it’s obvious — as any very senior person could tell you — that they might well have been. (And is it really just a coincidence that the two — Clinton David Rintoull, 22, of Noble Park, and Dylan Sabatino, 19, believed to be from South Australia — both wore black clothing at their most recent hearing?) Irrelevant too, is the fact that “Sudanese refugees are convicted for fewer crimes per capita than the general Victorian population, according to [Victorian] police”.

Senior people know better.

Boycott the Birmy: Spread the Love!

Posted in Anti-fascism, Collingwood, Music | 5 Comments

anarchy is a (Venezuelan) fag!

“I have passed a national leader (who aspires to be part of the party) to the Disciplinary Council for talking nonsense. I will be watching closely … Critical thinking is fundamental to a revolution, but that is very different to going around talking badly about a party that has not been born, collecting signatures to present them who knows where. Anyone who wants to be an anarchist, get out of here, you are not wanted, what is needed here is a creative, but disciplined active membership.”

~ Hugo Chavez, as quoted by Edgardo Lander, ‘Party disciplinarians: the threat to dissidence and democracy in the United Socialist Party of Venezuela’, September 28, 2007 (Source: Sara Carolina Díaz y María Daniela Espinoza “Ameliach fuera de Presidencia de la Comisión de Defensa de la AN. Scabs continue to crawl…

A x-post from the Boycott the Birmingham blog. And since when were goths so reactionary? Did I miss the vampire bat or something? Check the conversation among some of the locals. Like Bart Simpson once famously stated, “We need another Battle of Nassius to thin out their ranks a little”.

As has been customary for the last 20 years or so, the last Saturday in September is when the Melbourne Punk Pub Crawl takes place. The kick-off point is The Arty, while the final destination has varied. Most recently, it’s been The Birmy.

On Saturday, September 29, 2007, as on Saturday, September 30, 2006, a number of punks crawled to The Birmy to drink and to watch punks perform on- and off- stage. This year, four bands were scheduled to perform:

Sewer Cider; Social Suicide; Suicide Kings; and The Worst.

Sewer Cider and The Worst have played at The Birmy on a number of previous occasions. Both bands were contacted prior to the gig to ascertain their attitude toward the boycott. Sewer Cider did not reply, while The Worst, in the person of Chunga, their lead singer, replied that he wasn’t a racist and that anarchists were faggots.

In 2006, on white supremacist website Stormfront, a local member of the Hammerskins, agreeing with Chunga, recalled the ISD gig the week before the 2006 Melbourne Punk Pub Crawl as follows:

Some tool rang up the owner and said he was some construction union boss and had 200 union members in the city that were going to come and picket outside and alluded to maybe doing more than that.

They also rang the owner all night and hung up and harassed him.

There was even the gig’s address/details/map/location/phone number on ‘the site we aren’t allowed to talk about here’ on the day of the gig.

Well we waited all night to ‘say hello’ to these scum and NOT one person turned up.

It’s amazing how these cowardly dirtbags can even stand up without a spine. Gutless fags.

The gig was brilliant: great bands, great people and a good time was had by all.

UP YOURS FAG ANTI-RACIST VERMIN!

GOD FORGIVES, HAMMERS DON’T!

Following the gig, Jason Bastard of Bastard Squad wrote (September 24, 2006):

It’s about time we find out where our friends really stand. This is something that can no longer be ignored. The annual punk pub crawl happens this Saturday (September 30), and it usually finishes at The Birmy. I cannot believe that punks will still go to The Birmy after something as significant as this. Hypocrisy seems no longer an issue in today’s ‘anything goes’ apathetic punk scene. If punks go to The Birmy, even the fundamentals that we all share become null and void. It would be nothing less than ridiculing ourselves.

This is not the case of ‘oh shit, boneheads were at that pub last week, we better not go there’.

This is much more than that. This is something well organised and deliberate. This is blatant support of Blood & Honour because it is providing a venue for their gigs and meetings. To all extents and purposes the Birmy can justifiably be called a Blood & Honour pub.

I will not be going to The Birmy at the end of the pub crawl or at any other time in the future. I will also be reminding others of what happened there and asking them if they are still going. It will be interesting to hear what reasons punks give for still going to The Birmy. If the answer has anything to do with having no heart or no backbone, maybe I will ask myself ‘what is this all about then’.

So what’ll it be, punk?

Fuck off if you don’t want to help, that’s the message loud and clear
From the con men you once labelled, you bastards just don’t care
Just who the fuck are you to talk? You even sell yourselves
O.K. you’ve got your own opinions, well now have ours as well

Shut your mouth, because you don’t understand the way things are
The way we live, the role we play is not a superstar
For you to use, build up, smash down as you see fit
You dozy jerks you write such shit

If we sound like a bad phone call then you’ve got a crossed line
If we tell you the same as yesterday, well, did you think we would change our minds?
You say we look too violent, say our message is forgotten
Well, if you don’t like that tough, because that’s the only face I’ve got!

Shut your mouth, because you don’t understand the way things are
The way we live, the role we play is not a superstar
For you to use, build up, smash down as you see fit
You don’t know shit… you make me sick

Be careful what you wish for…

Do you remember when you said you cared
And that you would never be ensnared
By the lure of the music biz
‘Cos you were doing it all “for the kids”

Now that just seems like so many hollow lies
You’ve become what you said you despised
We can see from the dance floor
Those you opposed, you now work for

Which, in the case of Against Me!, is Time-Warner Corporation (via Sire Records): the largest of the handful of media monopolies that dominate the global market in music (and most other mediums). The Center for Public Integrity notes that “In 2005, Time Warner reported revenue of $43.7 billion, with a net income of $2.9 billion, down 14 percent from the year before”. To what extent Against Me!’s labour has contributed to Time-Warner’s coffers is at this point unknown, but their corporate debut, New Wave, peaked at #57 on the US Billboard charts on July 28 this year. (Critic Robert Christgau, incidentally, awarded it **** in a Rolling Stone review.) Akiva Gottlieb, meanwhile, has some reflections on the band’s status as a ‘sellout’ in ‘Political Punk: Rage Against the Band’ (The Nation, September 28, 2007).

We mean it, maaan!

Like x number of punk bands before them, Against Me!’s decision to go corporate has triggered a minor backlash among its (former) fans, and also — naturally — compelled the band to deliver a number of tortured justifications for doing so. Thus “the band, who made their name (exclamation point and all) not so long ago by playing raucous shows in church basements and laundromats, has burned its share of bridges on its way to the top, especially among the idealistic young fans whose idea of integrity can’t be found on a BlackBerry”, while Tom Gabel quotes Paul Stanley to the effect that “Credibility is someone else’s idea of what I should be doing, not mine”. And while, just as I’ve no desire to contradict a taxman on the subject of poetry, I’m naturally loathe to quibble over the meaning of words with a multi-millionaire businessman, I should note that ‘credibility’ may also be defined as meaning “the quality of being believable or trustworthy”. And it’s the presumed ‘credibility gap’ between recording for a corporation like Time-Warner and the band’s status as one of the latest in the massively long line of ‘musical rebels who enforce their own brand of cultural justice’™ that’s really at issue in this and similar debates. (On which subject, see ‘The End of Music’, a critique of punk and reggae, by Dave and Stuart Wise, available in Stewart Home’s otherwise worthless volume What is Situationism? — but not, unfortunately, online.)

Caveat emptor

Economically speaking, the tiny handful of fans of the band’s previous work who feel aggrieved by Against Me!’s decision to ‘sell out’ to The Man will have zero impact, easily being replaced one thousand times over by new fans unconcerned by such mystifying issues, and happy enough to join the boys in totally, like, “rocking out, dude!”; or at least until the next product emerges on the rock ‘n’ roll factory line. Or to put it another way: “Only a fool would be a rock star without protecting the hard work they have done and reaping the rewards. The person that says they’re only in it for the music is in for a sad awakening when they are working at a hamburger stand asking if they want fries. For us it becomes common sense if money is being generated, it should rightfully go into our pockets. We try to maximize everything we do. We’re proud to be rich and make no apologies.” Or in the words of another, aspiring rock *:

In the end, Gabel feels most comfortable justifying his band’s big move as a utilitarian quid pro quo. “We don’t owe anyone anything other than music. If you buy a CD, you get the music that’s on there. If you come to a show, we owe you music.” And with that, the comfortably established antiestablishment punk band takes the stage to give the consumers the protest songs they paid for. Because that’s how capitalism works.

And speaking of capitalism, the latest issue of Anarchy: A Journal of Desire Armed is dedicated to dissecting it, especially in terms of the relationship between being an ‘anarchist’ and living under capitalism (or in the words of a ‘friend’, the way in which anarchists wrapped up in their lifestylism struggle against an exploitative system):

Poke an anarchist whose project involves an exchange of money for goods, and chances are you will have to duck to avoid the stream of sticky, apologetic defensiveness.

“If we don’t charge, how do you expect us to provide you with this stuff and still sustain ourselves?”

“What should we do?”

“It’s classist to think that people can do this for free…” etc.

While the apologies and excuses do acknowledge that something contradictory and complicated is happening, the rationales tend to fall back into the same old purity reasoning, not much more engaged than the disingenuous complaints about Zerzan’s use of a typewriter.

These simplistic responses distract us from the questions that we could get creative with. Once we acknowledge that capitalism is in the air we breathe then we can have more interesting conversations…

On which subject, more later, when I review the copy kindly sent to me.

When we have nothing left to give
There’ll be no reason for us to live
But when we have nothing left to lose
You will have nothing left to use

We owe you nothing
You have no control

Merchandise, it keeps us in line
Common sense says it’s by design
What could a businessman ever want more
Than to have us sucking in his store?

We owe you nothing
You have no control

We are not what you own
