Occupy Melbourne v The Man #omel

A Federal Court case alleging that in crushing #omel council and police broke Over 9,000 rights will recommence today @ 2.15pm (tho’ I can’t find the listing). Mostly, the case has to do with the right of a person (or persons) to be able to assemble in public and to talk politics without being hit over the head or stripped of their clothing (and stuff) just ’cause Robert Doyle doesn’t like what you have to say or wear.

The case has been brought by James Muldoon and Sara Kerrison and is supported by various other participants in Occupy Melbourne; Quincy MD Merkel QC, inter alia, is arguing that it’s the Constitution, it’s Mabo, it’s justice, it’s law, it’s the vibe and — No, that’s it. It’s the vibe. (And the Victorian Charter of Human Rights.)

The case began on Wednesday and is expected to conclude this week before Justice North makes up his mind. As for the eventual winner, my money’s on The Man. That said, I really don’t have that much money, and my only real hope is that the following questions are addressed:

Fun fact: ‘Operation Dangle’ was the name VicPol gave to its use as an auxilliary force by Doyle & Co.

PS. Occupy continues every Friday in the Square. Live twittering of the case is kindly being provided by Occupy Melbourne.
PPS. Police are having heaps of fun evicting filthy tent-dwellers in Perf too.

White Pride World Wide…ish Day 2012

Despite being an Aussie invention, ‘White Pride World Wide’ (WPWW) Day seems to have only really registered among boneheads in two other former British colonies: Canada and New Zealand(/Aotearoa). To celebrate the historic occasion, in Canada, two tiny groups of boneheads took to the streets in Edmonton (Alberta) and London (Ontario) this weekend; in Aotearoa/New Zealand, former Hammerskin/NZNF fuehrer, Mormon, and always-outrageous Kyle Chapman led a few score of his followers on a march through Christchurch.

Presumably.

EDMONTON — A white pride rally in Edmonton’s downtown lasted only minutes when the demonstrators fled into a subway stairwell after they were greeted by over 100 anti-racist counter-protesters.

LONDON – An expected ‘white pride’ rally outside London city hall drew a large crowd Saturday afternoon — but one marching under an anti-racism banner.

CHRISTCHURCH – ?

Kyle likes to boast about how Christchurch is a White Power town but, as the following, ‘choice’, amateur footage suggests, some folks don’t appear to have gotten the message…

2012 Queensland State Election

For 120 years Labor has been the force of fairness, equality and reform in Australia.

LOL.

Unusually, newly-elected Campbell Newman “pledged last night his new, overwhelmingly powerful government would conduct itself with humility, grace and dignity” rather than pride, awkwardness and degradation.

In other news, the Socialist Alliance candidate in Dalrymple, Jason Briskey, seems to have narrowly beaten some bloke called Christopher Williamson — about whom I can find no other information — and thus avoided last place. In Sandgate, Mike Crook, despite riding into battle on a donkey, appears unable to have avoided Williamson’s fate, Christian fundamentalism proving to be twice as popular a doctrine among the people of northern Brisbane as eco-socialism (maybe the Red Eureka Tendency is right?). Finally, in Southgate, Comrade Liam Flenady — whose attachment to SA is strangely absent on the QEC site results — also failed to set the night on fire.

On the other side of the equation, the six candidates for One Nation failed to generate much enthusiasm, the party’s place being supplanted by The Mad Hatter (whose son got bumped into Parliament in Dalrymple). Despite its pithy appeal, “Our own obtuse governments are commercial sluts!” proved not to be a winning slogan. In Ashgrove, NELSON, Ian may have got as many as 50 votes; in Gympie, FERRARO, Santo polled a respectable 1%; CHIDGEY, David may have obtained as much as 1.5 or even 2% of the vote in Capalaba; in Logan, AGGETT, Troy was badly out-polled by the Pauline-Hanson-Plus-Hat brigade, a situation repeated in both Cook (EVANS, James) and Beaudesert (State President SAVAGE, Jim).

Late Breaking News

Bob Briton, formerly of The Communists (nee Communist Alliance) stood for the seat of Port Adelaide in February. He got 292 votes (1.5%), crushing both One Nation (269) and Democratic Labor (151) under his progressive jackboot. Previously, Bob was the Communist candidate for the seat of Lee in March 2010. On that occasion he got 608 votes (2.9%).

Hajnal Black, Fidel Castro, CIA, Freemasons, Paul Howes, Illuminati, Clive Palmer, Frankfurt School, Rockefellers

Update (March 23, 2012) : ‘TOGETHER they bring home more than $200,000 of ratepayers’ money every year, but the husband of fugitive councillor Hajnal Black says they’re under “extreme finical (sic) pressure”.’ Pretty sure this means Rupert Murdoch is part of the conspiracy to prevent the Blacks from having children amirite? Also, she got arrest.

Apparently, bankrupt/millionaire Logan City councillor Hajnal Black is (was) missing, on-the-run from authorities who have issued a warrant for her arrest following some unsatisfactory legal encounters.

The lady’s not for turning (up to court).

I first became aware of Ms. Black last year, when she was one of several Tories to rally in defence of chocolatier Max Brenner. At the time, the Israeli-owned chain was subject to boycott rallies, organised by Palestine solidarity activists, (partly) intended to generate publicity for the global Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions (BDS) campaign. Hajnal joined a range of others, including members of the ADL, APDM and APP, to counter-protest outside the chain. On October 25, Logan Council “declared the Green’s BDS policy as racist & discriminatory”.

Other fun facts include:

• In response to the question “If we changed the name of Logan Hospital to honour the Queen for her service to Australia in this, her Diamond Jubilee year, which of the following names would you prefer?” — posed by her husband Sean (who adds: “I have prepared a press release on this passion of mine in my notes section”) — Hajnal votes in favour of ‘Queen of Queensland Hosptial’ [sic]. (Sean recently described The Queen as a “woman of most astounding brilliance and resilience”.)

• According to Marissa Calligeros (Hajnal under fire: Mickel hits back, The Brisbane Times, March 22, 2012):

Mrs Black is well connected in conservative political circles, winning LNP preselection for the federal seat of Wright in 2010 before it was revoked because she failed to disclose the investigation into her behaviour as power of attorney.

Federal Senator Barnaby Joyce was MC at the Blacks’ wedding in 2010, which was also attended by mining magnate and LNP donor Clive Palmer, opposition state MP Fiona Simpson and Senator Ron Boswell.

• Boswell rhymes with Roswell.

• Clive Palmer has recently disclosed that The Greens are conspiring with the CIA to destroy the Australian coal industry. Further, “He said a plan by Greenpeace to launch legal action against future coal mining projects was funded by the US-based Rockefeller Foundation, which he claimed was funded by the Central Intelligence Agency”.

• In July 2011, Hajnal shared a stage with Christopher Walter Monckton (3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley) on his rabble-rousing tour of Australia denouncing The Climate Change Myth. (His Lordship’s tour was reportedly bankrolled by fellow billionaire Gina Rinehart.) Previously, in May 2011, Christopher rather controversially remarked upon the striking resemblance between Adolf Hitler and Ross Garnaut. For her part, Hajnal reckons that The Greens want to gas her to death because of her opposition to The Carbon Tax:

…they are so desperate to ram their hurtful tax through that whenever I make a comment and point out the science and point out the facts and I attach reports, they come back with ‘you guys should be gassed’ — these are the types of comments they make — ‘you should be tattooed’… knowing full well that my grandfather was a Holocaust survivor and this is the length and breadth and the way that these Greens will do whatever they can to ram their agenda through…

Hajnal later adds that, unless The Green Tidal Wave is stopped, Australia is in grave danger of becoming a Communist country.

Curiously, erstwhile political opponent Paul Howes has also identified this danger, arguing that the Greens are indeed an unlovely bunch of watermelons. In ‘Beware the Greens’ (The Sunday Telegraph, July 18, 2010) Howes wrote: “The Green’s [sic] have been using the slogan “The future is Green” but if Rhiannon is successful, truth in advertising laws may require them to amend it to “The future is red”.”

But as in the case of Clive Palmer and the CIA, all is not as straightforward as it may first appear. Thus the following, shocking confession:

From card-carrying Communist to staunch anti-Communist in the space of three hours? ORLLY? (Deep entrism, anyone?)

As noted previously, the multi-billionaire amateur Marxologist Palmer argued in relation to the KRudd Government’s Resource Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Profit Tax (a tax which Howes, on behalf of the AWU/ALP, was highly vocal in supporting): “I think it comes from Das Kapital in 1868. The super tax comes about by Marx and Engels and their famous work which inspired the Russian Revolution.”

Oh, you want more?

• The CIA invented feminism in order to destroy Western Civilization: a plot, like that to destroy the Australian coal industry, also underwritten by The Rockefeller Foundation. FACT.

• Rock and/or roll was invented by members of the shadowy ‘Frankfurt School’; The Rockefellers hired MC Adorno when he came to America in 1938 for precisely this reason. FACT.

• WWIII is being set up by the British Empire, and if you don’t think the British Empire is the enemy, you don’t understand the CECs of the situation.

In summary, then:

It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key.

Urewera trial verdicts

The Activists Previously Known As The Urewera 20 17 16 4 (Emily Bailey, Tame Iti, Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara and Urs Signer) have been found guilty of firearms charges; the jury was unable to reach a verdict on charges they belonged to a criminal group.

Urewera raids verdict: hung jury (TVNZ)
Urewera trial: Verdicts reached (NZ Herald)
Verdicts (Aotearoa Indymedia)

I especially enjoyed reading this line in the TVNZ report:

“[The prosecution] said the accused were the ringleaders of the camps which were training and preparing people to go to war. The Crown said they were ready to kidnap, wound and injure, commit violent crimes and even kill.”

It prompted me to consider writing the New Zealand authorities alerting them to the existence of the New Zealand Army; word on the street is that Australia too possesses such institutions.

Public forum on austerity and resistance in Greece : Thursday, March 29, 2012

Next Thursday night in Northcote there will be a forum to discuss the Greek debt crisis, the imposition of austerity measures and popular resistance. There will be speakers, music, film and poetry, and all proceeds will be used to aid the struggle in Greece.

WHEN AND WHERE : 7-11pm/ Thursday, March 29/ 251 High Street, Northcote (Melbourne)
COST : Concession $4/ Waged $8/ Solidarity $12

In the manufactured ‘reality’ of the mass media the problems of the Greek “debt” crisis are an endless flurry of context-less images; of riots, strikes and unrest embellished with quotes by the talking heads of capital. The IMF and capitalist economists all nod furiously in agreement that “There is No Alternative™.” The guardians of capital insist that the loans and austerity program imposed on the Greek people by the EU/IMF are necessary to help Greece meet its debt obligations and reform their ‘overly generous’ pension and welfare system.

However the fiction peddled of the lazy, privileged Greek sits in stark contrast with the reality of most people’s lives in Greece. Wages, especially for young workers, are extremely low and prices for everyday items are as high as those paid in Western Europe; as the saying in Greece goes “we receive Third World wages, we pay European prices.”

In recent months there has been an almost catastrophic decline in living standards. Unemployment is now over 20%, and as high as 40% for those between the ages of 18-25. The rate of homelessness has increased exponentially and the demand for food aid and medical care has massively increased. Pensions, wages and ‘benefits’ (there is no welfare system as in Australia, workers & employers subsidize the meager, limited/short term unemployment payments) have all been dramatically cut, and public services have in many cases, ceased to exist; the only parts of the State that still function as ‘normal’ are the police and the army.

Ordinary people in Greece, however, are not taking this collective punishment without a fight. Popular refusal and resistance to the IMF/EU austerity measures have become part of the everyday life of people in Greece; from strikes, occupations and demonstrations to everyday acts of solidarity and collaboration between people in struggle.

Resistance is a mass phenomenon; from electricity workers helping people reconnect their power, to people occupying and collectively running their workplaces, to strikes, occupations of public buildings and a refusal to pay tolls on public roads. All of society is organising in struggle; from workers to students, pensioners, farmers and the unemployed; in workplaces, local assemblies, schools, universities, town halls and other public buildings.

Come join us on the 29th of March to discuss the Greek austerity crisis and hear from people involved in these social movements live via skype.

There will be live music from a 5 piece Rembetika kompania (Greek oriental ‘outlaw’ folk) afterwards, as well as a short film from the movement against austerity and poetry from Greek-Australian writers.

antifa notes (march 18, 2012)

London:

On Thursday, March 15 a crowd of about 30 people — including comrades from a range of local anarchist groups — attended a picket of the Bulgarian Embassy in support of imprisoned anti-fascist Jock Palfreeman. Leaflets explaining Jock’s case were distributed to passers-by and a Bulgarian flag was burnt.

Patras / Athens:

On Wednesday, March 14 Greek police were unable to prevent a small group of anarchists from re-decorating the newly-opened offices of the neo-fascist Chrysi Avyi (‘Golden Dawn’). While local police are reportedly unhappy at the new interior design, polls suggest a new age may be dawning for their golden-haired fascist comrades. According to another source: Syriza’s Alexis Tsipras recently accused the government of being “not that Greek”; a delegation from Golden Dawn brought food and fraternal greetings to striking Communist unionists at a steel plant near Athens, one of whom welcomed them with the words, “All Greece is at our side.” Both ends of the spectrum enthusiastically exploit the anti-German feeling that’s now almost ubiquitous, with swastikas burning in Syntagma Square and cartoons in the popular press of Angela Merkel wearing a Nazi uniform.

Several weeks prior to the art attack in Patras, on Friday, February 24 another group of anarchists harshly criticised “a touring company of dastards nostalgic for the Hitler era” which had somewhat foolishly adopted the habit of openly assembling in Kyprou Square (Kalithea, Athens). The swastika-lickers were eventually forced to agree with the trenchant critique of their asshattery and the Square is once again open to a much broader range of styles. The action was dedicated to the memory of comrade Nikita Kalin. [English // Greek]

Sydney:

‘Roll Over Racism’ is the name given to a gig organised for April 21 at The Bald Faced Stag in Leichhardt. It takes place at the same time as the neo-Nazi Hammered Festival in Brisbane. Fingers xed any profits will be donated to Russian antifa or something. (For more infos contact [email protected].)

Trouble At Mill : March 16, 2012, Sigma Pharmaceuticals Edition

Update (March 20) : “Sigma workers have successfully protected their current shift arrangements, negotiated a 4% pay rise, and voted to return to work…”

Welcome to Sigma Pharmaceuticals Limited

Sigma was founded by two Melbourne pharmacists in 1912. Today, Sigma Pharmaceuticals Limited is a leading CSO qualified full-line wholesaler servicing some 4,000 pharmacies throughout Australia.

Our success is supported by our ownership of some of the largest and most recognised pharmacy retail brands in Australia, Amcal, Amcal Max and Guardian. As well as the special relationship we have with our brand members, we work closely with our independent pharmacist customers, providing a range of retail and pharmacy programs and services.

Workers at Sigma in Rowville are on strike/have been locked-out by the company. Apparently, the Australian Financial Review last Friday described the dispute as a “landmark struggle over whether penalty rates will be paid on night shifts” (Australian workers locked out by pharmaceutical company, Peter Byrne, wsws.org, March 14, 2012; see also : Sigma workers resist lockout in Melbourne, Laura Riccardi, sa.org.au, March 13, 2012). The action has heap ’em big support [PDF] while Sigma owns some of the largest retail pharmacy brands in Australia including Amcal and Guardian.

Should the robotniks in Rowville be paid moar for working at night rather than the day? The company wants halp from Fair Work Australia to say ‘no’.

We’ll see, I guess.

Oh and next Friday, March 23, there’s some kinda union rally thing…

…And Moar

From the Department of “Anti-Semitism is the socialism of fools” (“Der Antisemitismus ist der Sozialismus der dummen Kerle”) comes news of another tour (of the United States) by Gilad Atzmon. Some folks aren’t all that happy about his tour or his work — especially the support given him by left or progressive organisations — and have issued a statement about it: Not Quite “Ordinary Human Beings”—Anti-imperialism and the anti-humanist rhetoric of Gilad Atzmon (March 13, 2012). You can read it here. Another statement — Granting No Quarter: A Call for the Disavowal of the Racism and Antisemitism of Gilad Atzmon (March 13, 2012) — has been issued by a mob called the US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN).

Closer to home, I’m aware of only a handful of Australians to have attached their names to the former statement. Otherwise, in July 2010, Michael Brull complained about ‘Australians for Palestine’ re-publishing some of Atzmon’s work — the latest such activity occurring in May 2011. (AFP published an editorial statement responding to such criticisms in July 2010.) In the UK, Atzmon’s work has been supported by the SWP, tho’ it seems to have distanced itself in recent times, presumably on account of his batshit.

Here’s a song (or three):

Freedom for Jock Palfreeman / Jock Palfreeman for Freedom

Paul ‘Jock’ Palfreeman is a 25-year-old Australian (born November 13, 1986) currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in Sofia, Bulgaria. An anarchist and anti-fascist, one night in Sofia in December 2007 Jock intervened to stop a racist assault. As a result, one man died, and despite abundant evidence to the contrary, Jock was convicted of the crime of ‘murder with hooliganism’. Jock’s story is a compelling one, and there is an ongoing international campaign to free him: a day of action is taking place on March 15.

Background

Originally from Sydney, Jock left Australia for Europe in 2006. Having spent most of 2007 in the UK, in December Jock travelled to Bulgaria, where he had previously spent many months working. On the night of December 28, 2007 Jock was celebrating with a small group of friends in the capital Sofia when he witnessed a large group of football hooligans assault two Roma men. When Jock intervened in an attempt to stop the assault, the gang turned on him. In the ensuing melee, one of the gang, Andrey Monov, was stabbed and later died on the way to hospital.

Arrested on the night of the incident, Jock was charged with murder and attempted murder. His trial commenced in May 2008. In December 2009, after numerous delays, Jock was found guilty of the murder of 20-year-old law student Monov and the attempted murder of 19-year-old Antoan Zahariev. In addition to a prison term, Jock was also fined 400,000 leva (approximately $A325,000). Subsequent appeals have failed to either overturn the verdict or reduce the sentence, and Jock’s final avenue of legal redress is the European Court of Human Rights— a very difficult, lengthy and expensive process.

Trial

From the beginning, Jock has always maintained that he acted in self-defence. “When I saw the 15 men attack the two homeless men, I was presented with a choice. Stand back and let the injustice continue or [intervene] in an attempt to save human life” (February 2011). While elsewhere in Europe ‘hooliganism’ is a term used to downplay fascist abuses, in Jock’s case it serves to rob his action of political meaning.

There are numerous other reasons to question the verdict in Jock’s case, a useful summary of which has been provided by Jock’s father Dr Simon Palfreeman who—through a quirk in the Bulgarian judicial system—was able to join Jock’s defence team. Aside from motivation—the prosecution claimed Jock is a violent psychotic—the central flaws in the prosecution case are conflicting eyewitness testimonies, the disappearance of crucial CCTV footage, and numerous procedural irregularities.

Andrey’s father is a well-known and influential figure in Bulgarian society, and Bulgaria’s justice system has a deserved and well-documented reputation for corruption. Many police officers, judges and politicians attended Monov’s funeral, and the overall legal, political and social context for the trial has been overwhelmingly hostile to the defence.

Media

Jock’s case has received considerable coverage in Australia and been the subject of two ABC television documentaries, the most recent (‘Conviction’) broadcast in June 2011 and the earlier account (‘One Night in Sofia’) in June 2009 (both available for viewing online and highly-recommended). When Jock was first charged, a false story was circulated claiming that he had previously stabbed a man in Sydney; later, it was falsely reported that the dead man, Monov, had been stabbed in the back.

Within Bulgaria, the media reportage has been almost universally hostile, and Jock portrayed as being psychologically unbalanced; a psychological report conducted by the court concluded that he is neither violent nor aggressive and on the contrary possesses a highly-developed sense of social justice.

Campaign

There have been sporadic attempts to publicise Jock’s case in Europe and Australia (most recently with a banner drop in Sydney over NYE 2011) and an international day of action was held in October 2010 with events organised in Australia, Austria, France and Russia. Support for Jock within Bulgaria appears to be minimal, and public expressions of same dangerous for those concerned: the far right has held public demonstrations condemning Jock and threatened violent retaliation against any who dare to publicly oppose them. This hostile political climate helps to explain the position of the Federation of Anarchists in Bulgaria, which has denounced Jock and in response to his trial called for the maximum penalty to be imposed upon him.

Context

The fact that the two men on whose behalf Jock attempted to intervene are Roma is significant, both because the police were unable to locate them to act as witnesses but also because harnessing widespread anti-Roma sentiment is a key mobilising strategy for the far right in Bulgaria, especially the Attack party. In September 2011, anti-Roma pogroms took place in Bulgaria, The New York Times reporting that protesters shouted racist slogans like “Gypsies into soap” and “Turks under the knife.”

Jock’s case is an important one for anarchists and other anti-fascists to publicise as part of ongoing efforts to combat the rising tide of racism and fascism within Bulgaria and Europe as a whole. Jock’s actions were informed by a sense of solidarity, one which transcends ethnic boundaries and national borders, and his punishment is a register of the perverted nature of criminal justice in capitalist society. Jock welcomes correspondence and may be reached at Sofia Central Prison, 21 General Stoletov Boulevard, Sofia 1309, BULGARIA. Further information on his case may be found at freejock.com.
