Leeds Under Threat from ’90s Rap: BPP Takes Courageous Stand (to Popular Acclaim)

The British People’s Party (BPP) are awesome. Formerly known as the ‘White Nationalist Party’, on Saturday October 18, teh bizarros of teh BPP staged a public protest outside a record shop, HMV, in Leeds, England (Land of hope and glory, mother of the free / How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee / Australians all let us ring Joyce / For she is young and free / We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil / Our home is girt by sea / Et cetera et cetera et cetera). The ostensible purpose of the BPP’s rally was to draw the British People’s attention to Ice Cube’s album Death Certificate, his second studio album released in the United States on October 31, 1991 on Priority Records. According to Antifa:

When the ‘British People’s Party’ first announced their plans for an anti-Hip Hop demo in Leeds [August 19, 2008] this coming Saturday [October 18], they boasted of taking back the streets from “the filthy reds”. The architect of the demo, vile Kate McDermody, talked of it being the opening shot in a “Racial Holy War”. As the demo swiftly approaches, and the reality of ‘street politics’ beckons, it is clear that McDermody and her fellow fascist numbskulls are terrified.

The BPP’s budding alliance with elements of the National Front, and with the so-called “Racial Volunteer Force” and “British Freedom Fighters”, lies in tatters. Even McDermody wasn’t thick enough to think that a small group of aging boneheads could protect her from the righteous anger of the people of Leeds. She and BPP dogsbody Kevin Watmough had loose cannon Tony White arrested, and the Toytown Stormtroopers woke up to the fact that they were being sacrificed to McDermody’s ego…

Cruel perhaps, but fair.

In any event, according to reports, the BPP protest was tiny enough to rival the dizzying heights of popularity the (Orstralian) Patriotik Yoof League experienced during its very brief day in the sun. A mad Marxist from a Trotskyist groupuscule, for example, claims a mere eight BPP members and supports attended (mind you, they also claim the BPP is “headed by a man recently imprisoned for making nail bombs and downloading child pornography”; a reference, presumably, to Martyn Gilleard).

The same revolutionary yoof also claims that “Workers Power’s youth group, Revolution, led the demonstration”.

Another account, by sarah_a67, reckons the protest was organised by Love Music Hate Racism. (She also writes that “The police, who had been quite cooperative, stopping cars and stuff on the way, turned nasty when we were standing in the street. I’d not taken part in a march before, nor been at the hands of police brutality, but now I’ve done both.”) LMHR, in turn, writes: “Leeds LMHR & UAF activists were among hundreds in an excellent turnout in Leeds today against a risible protest by the Nazi “British People’s Party” against “black hip-hop”. Report to follow.”

Dave Kirk (of Trotskyist groupuscule, the Alliance For Workers Liberty) claims — correctly, as far as I can tell — that the counter-protest was called by Antifa, and half-heartedly supported by UAF (note that the local Leeds UAF group’s site is dormant). According to Dave, relatively few attended on behalf of UAF, and the majority of those who did take part were young anarchists and socialists (the trade unions having no formal presence). On the other hand, elsewhere the AWL claims that “Workers Power and ourselves [should] take credit for making sure that [the] political level was raised by [our sloganeering] and indeed that the counter-demo took place at all”.

In any event, in the absence of UAF control, the counter-protest was a little more lively than it might otherwise have been, and the 17 — yes, that’s right: seventeen — neo-Nazis organised by the BPP to mope about outside a record shop were massively outnumbered, both by police and their political opposition. Had the BPP not arranged for police protection, it’s highly likely their re-emergence on the streets of Leeds would have been short and sweet. The BPP itself claims “Twenty one, yes a mere twenty one, BPP members and supporters stood tall amongst hundreds of Marxist scumbags in Leeds city centre yesterday.”

Today Leeds HMV; tomorrow, the world!

Among those who attended, in addition to the comical leader of the BPP, Kate (Mc)Dermody, was an 11 year-old grrl. She angrily demanded ‘White Music For White People’ — apparently — although I suspect HMV has sold out of Prussian Blue. Sadly, in disappointing news for spotters, Wigan Mike didn’t brave the Marxist hordes in Leeds: his absence, presumably, an exercise in solidarity with his neo-Nazi comrade Tony White. Unfortunately for Tony, he was recently arrested by police for possession of racist material — allegedly as a result of information supplied to them by the BPP. As for the hundreds of police temporarily recruited by the BPP as their security detail, they came at a price, as the Party’s fuehrer provided ZOG — ZOG! — with the names of all those attending.

As ever, the most entertaining and informative account of the BPP’s practical demonstration of White supremacy on the streets of Leeds is provided by Antifa. In summary: “What we saw in Leeds yesterday was the reality of the BPP’s attempt to “take back the streets”: a pitifully small, ramshackle collection of aging neo-Nazis, hiding behind a huge police presence, not even close to a member of the public, moaning half-pissed to each other for 45 minutes, then scuttling off like a nonce beneath a blanket”. Equally comic is Kate’s take:

After thinking about yesterday I have remembered a few things that I just wanted to mention. First off was Jess, the eleven year old boy who showed us all what pride is all about when he went straight to the front and stood on top of the barrier with a flag flying from his hand and screaming ‘red scum’ at the degenerates gathered ogainst us. He was an absolute inspiration to every Nationalist in this Country.

Brings a tear to your eye doesn’t it?

…and the other mob

Of course, the BPP is merely the poor retarded cousin of the British National Party (BNP), and while Kate (Mc)Dermody may one day be transported to the colonies for her many crimes against common decency, good taste, logic, reason and the English language, Nick Griffin, the BNP’s Fuehrer-for-Life, is in the process of applying for a visa to enter Australia in December. A newly-formed leftist thinktank called Catalyst is calling on the Australian Government to deny Griffin a visa. On October 17 the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Chris Evans released the following statement to Catalyst, which merely reiterates the legal situation:

All non-citizens who wish to enter Australia must satisfy the requirements of the Migration Act and regulations, including the character test.

The character test includes provisions to ensure that a non-citizen will not vilify, incite discord in or represent a danger to the Australian community, or a segment of that community.

Griffin has not yet applied for a visa. If and when an application is made it will be assessed against the character requirements.

The Labor Party strongly opposes the fostering of extremism, hatred, division and incitement to violence.

Elsewhere, Irfan Yusuf has expressed his opinion on the question ‘Nick Griffin: to visa or not to visa…’, (Crikey/Planet Irf, October 16, 2008).

More Nasty American Psycho Boy ’80s!

More ’80s. Wisconsin’s finest Killdozer perform the original ‘Nasty’, later covered by Janet Jackson:

‘American Psycho’ – the musical
Chris Green
Independent.co.uk Web
September 27, 2008

With his shockingly gory novel American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis examined the decadence and greed of Wall Street workers during the Ronald Reagan era through the eyes of a self-professed homicidal maniac. Now a musical theatre version is to be created for Broadway…

The novel contains a number of lengthy chapters in which the main character waxes lyrical about his favourite musical acts of the era, including Genesis, Whitney Houston and Huey Lewis and the News. The prominence of Eighties music in the book is assumed to have inspired the Broadway version, and will undoubtedly influence its score, although the project will have to secure the rights to any tracks that it wishes to use…

GENESIS

Patrick Bateman: Do you like Phil Collins? I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn’t understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins’ presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don’t you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to ‘Land of Confusion’. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. ‘In Too Deep’ is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I’ve heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins’ solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like ‘In the Air Tonight’ and ‘Against All Odds’. Sabrina, don’t just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is ‘Sussudio’, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

WHITNEY HOUSTON

Patrick Bateman: Did you know that Whitney Houston’s debut LP, called simply Whitney Houston had 4 number one singles on it? Did you know that, Christie?
Elizabeth: [laughing] You actually listen to Whitney Houston? You own a Whitney Houston CD? More than one?
Patrick Bateman: It’s hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but ‘The Greatest Love of All’ is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it’s not too late to better ourselves. Since, Elizabeth, it’s impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It’s an important message, crucial really. And it’s beautifully stated on the album.

Hugh Anthony Cregg III AND THE NEWS

Patrick Bateman: Do you like Huey Lewis and The News?
Paul Allen: They’re OK.
Patrick Bateman: Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in ’83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He’s been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
Paul Allen: Hey Halberstram.
Patrick Bateman: Yes, Allen?
Paul Allen: Why are there copies of the style section all over the place, do you have a dog? A little chow or something?
Patrick Bateman: No, Allen.
Paul Allen: Is that a rain coat?
Patrick Bateman: Yes it is! In ’87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is “Hip to be Square”, a song so catchy, most people probably don’t listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it’s not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it’s also a personal statement about the band itself.
[raises axe above head]
Patrick Bateman: Hey Paul!
[he bashes Allen in the head with the axe, and blood splatters over him]
Patrick Bateman: TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW YOU FUCKING STUPID BASTARD! YOU FUCKING BASTARD!

Haider: He was a superstar (at the gay bar)

To be young, gifted and black drunk, speeding and gay…

Austrian fascist leader visited gay bar before death crash
PinkNews.co.uk
October 17, 2008

The former leader of the far right in Austria was drinking in a gay bar the night he died, it has emerged.

Joerg Haider had never been open about his homosexuality, but his habit of surrounding himself with handsome blond teenagers had led many to speculate.

Newspapers in his homeland said they were reluctant to publish “full details” of his homosexuality fearing an outburst of hate towards the gay community would overtake hatred towards foreigners. According to German daily Taz, many members of Vienna’s gay scene claimed he regularly had sex with young men below the age of consent – 18 for homosexuals. As a result Taz wrote: “These days he prefers to meet with boys from nearby Slovakia” (where the age of consent is 15).

The German and Austrian press outed the married father of two daughters in 2006.

His fascist political views led him to high office in Austria, despite his open praise for Nazi policies.

Haider died in a car accident on Saturday morning near Klagenfurt, less than 30 minutes after leaving the Stadtkraemer, a well-known gay hangout.

Prosecutors have confirmed there was four times the legal limit for alcohol in his blood and he was driving at twice the legal speed limit when he crashed his VW Phaeton.

Haider, 58, was the Governor of the state of Carinthia.

Thousands of people are expected to attend his funeral today, and police are prepared for clashes with anti-Nazi protesters.

News of Herr Haider’s homosexuality has prompted one local expert to quip ‘Fascism is a fag’. But the truth of the matter is “Whether old or young, lesbian or gay, fascism is never cool”. Funnily enough, Haider combined Ian Stuart’s driving skills with the sexiness of Ian’s best mate and co-founder of Blood & Honour, Nicky Crane: all three are dead now, sadly, although only Ian and Joerg are remembered.

Update (October 19) : Poor old rich young Bill get arrest: Va. supremacist arrested, Associated Press: “A white supremacist has been charged with threatening a federal juror. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Bondurant says William White was arrested Friday and charged with obstruction of justice. White is commander of the Roanoke-based American National Socialist Workers Party. Bondurant says the charge involves threatening the foreman of a Chicago jury in the case of Matthew Hale, who was convicted in 2004 of soliciting the murder of a federal judge. Hale was the leader of the World Church of the Creator, which held similar neo-Nazi beliefs as White’s organization. White told The Roanoke Times that he had posted information about a juror on his Web site, Overthrow.com, but that he had made no threats. White was being held without bond on Saturday.” Neo-Nazi arrested, jailed on federal charge: “William A. White of Roanoke has been charged with obstruction of justice, an assistant U.S. attorney says”, Laurence Hammack, The Roanoke Times.

In other words: White’s Web site closed by FBI: Overthrow.com has been off-line since federal officials seized computer equipment. “Oct 17, 2008 (The Roanoke Times – McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) — Federal agents have reportedly seized computer equipment from a Roanoke-based white supremacy group, at least temporarily shutting down a Web site used to spout racist rhetoric. Overthrow.com, which is run by William White, the commander of the American National Socialist Workers Party, has been off-line since last weekend…” No doubt William will be back to his old tricks in a few days.

“Niggers Ain’t Gonna Run This Town”: Militancy, Conflict and the Sustenance of the Hegemony in Bogalusa, Louisiana
Seth Hague

The battle for civil rights in Bogalusa, Louisiana was a struggle for power, but it was different from the prototypical struggles in the agricultural South during the 1960s. Industrialization is the main reason for this difference, as the black laborers met challenges distinctly different than the problems associated with the struggle in the agricultural South. Oppressed rural black populations were much more inclined to follow the leadership from groups like CORE and SNCC, whereas the laboring class of blacks in industrialized towns such as Jonesboro and Bogalusa fought themselves for power and demanded that outside coalitions like CORE follow them. They exercised militancy, embedded in them as the result of the rigid class-consciousness imposed by an oppositional white power structure, through an armed self-defense organization they created known as the Deacons for Defense and Justice. The efforts already made by the Jonesboro black laborers, entrenched in a similar situation in another industrialized Louisiana mill town, further inspired militancy in Bogalusa. Once Crown-Zellerbach laborers A.Z. Young and Robert Hicks assumed leadership of the (all-black) Bogalusa Civic and Voters’ League, the community came to embrace the militant rhetoric of the Jonesboro Deacons. Many violent conflicts ensued under this ideology and culminated in a climactic summer in 1965. Consequently, the black workers’ militancy threatened not only the power of the middle class blacks, but also the political and economic hegemony of the white power structure in Bogalusa. Except for a few noteworthy courtroom “victories” versus Crown-Zellerbach, threatening the power structure was virtually the struggle’s only effect as the white power structure subsumed the militancy and rhetoric of the revolutionary Bogalusans…

Tutti Parze Krusty Punx Rave On

everything old is new again… in sydney, tutti parze has re-formed… or gotta myspace page at least… in melbourne, reactor records has released RR22, ‘depression — the reactor years’, 40 tracks of classic punk rawk, featuring their debut 7″, debut album, ‘Australia Australia’ 12″ ep and a couple of previously unreleased 1982 demos. available direct from reactor records — P.O. Box 623 Camberwell Vic 3124 // [email protected] — or from missing link for the measly price of $22… on ozpunk history, see regression zine

t u t t i p a r z e : crazy crazy knights

the recordings that are up [on the tutti parze myspace page, from which this post is stolen] were recorded in 1990 at troy horse in newtown, sydney. we are rehearsing at the moment, got down some early songs and we have written a few new ones. if you liked us then, we sound a fuckin’ lot better now! this recording [1990] is wil and donna/vocals.. spin/bass.. billy/guitar.. simon/drums and i think it was spacy, stu and mega doing backing vocals on the chant on ‘it’s time now’.

many people have been involved with tutti parze in the past, so a list of some seems appropriate, they are- wil.. spin[r.i.p].. donna.. billy.. simon.. jenny[r.i.p].. nipper.. space.. keith.. stu.. mega.. damian.. the jellyheads collective.. those comrades that helped cook the food.. brothers and sisters that helped lug gear [especially when we had to escape fast from newtown festival after a rather outrageous performance] some heavily involved, some in passing but all contributed. its to the members that have passed away we dedicate our future work as tutti parze, you are dearly missed but never forgotten, comrades to the end now returned to the void. form to formlessness, formlessness is form.

tutti parze formed in the palmer street squat, bringing together some sydney punx, some melbourne punx and some punx living on a commune in mullumbimby rainforest nth nsw. as band members were spread over nearly 2000km it seems amazing they managed to pull anything together at all. for all the personal problems and fuckups i guess we didn’t do too bad. tutti parze were maybe the first of the crusty anarchist punk bands in sydney. all the first gigs were free, with free weed from nth coast communes, free vegan macrobiotic food, heaps of propaganda and a smattering of taoism. most were held at the randwick racecourse hotel and they tolerated the slightly illegal behavior of the band and its audience. tutti parze played with other likeminded bands like Mahatma Propaghandi, i am bacteria i am filth, Fred Nihilist, deviant kickback, mental health, Warp Spasm, subliminal pressure, compost, Mutiny, tofu terror, blind ambition and many others.

the fred nihilist 7″, ‘liberation’, is really neat! you can buy it from clinton @ shamefilemusic.com. supposedly, only 200 copies were made… on aboriginal land some time prior to world war three… a long time ago… when i went to a mutiny gig @ the empress… i gotta demo tape, 1992 i think it was… which the lazypommybastard bren will one day supposedly upload on to teh intertubes… along with the two-year olds’ demo… ‘warp spasm’ is also a gaelic term, riastradh, and refers to the ability of ancient warriors to gosickmate in battle… mahatma propaghandi morphed into non bossy posse –> vibe tribe –> ohms not bombs… the randwick racecourse hotel also played host to neo-nazi bands like white lightning, whose most recent reincarnation is t.h.u.g.: t.h.u.g. play regularly around sydney with all the usual suspects (avo, blurters, corps, homicides, rust, toe to toe), and whatever former divisions there were between anti-racist and anti-fascist punks, on the one hand, and boneheads, on the other, have mostly dissolved with time… a similar development has occurred in melbourne over the last few years, and is also now evident in perth…

‘Show Us You Care’, pioneering crust / grindcore from Ipswich’s finest: Extreme Noise Terror! Grindcore: “Fiercely political lyrics, grinding guitars, extremely fast tempo, and often very short songs.” (Antonym: pop punk.) Album: Earslaughter, split LP with Chaos UK on Manic Ears Records (1986). I swapped my copy… D’oh!

You say we won’t change nothing
But at least we’re fucking trying
    Say we’re always moaning
But at least we fucking care
    Say we should be happy
We’ve tried to but we can’t
    Say we should see sense
    But we already fucking have

    Use your shit-filled minds
And show us you fucking care

You don’t care about the rich
As long as you’re not poor
    Don’t care about vivisection
    ‘You cannot change the law’
Don’t care about the police force
Because they haven’t beaten up you
    Don’t care about the starving
    Because it’s nothing new

j e l l y h e a d s : omg! punk for the punx! eeek!

after a while the scene grew and realized it had its own economic power and that too much money was going to big corporations who owned either the pubs or the alcohol. a meeting was held at the old newtown cemetery and out of that meeting came the jellyheads collective [nearly all activist/anarchist bands and groups were represented on the collective]. after that meeting nearly all gigs were held in community halls with the money going to jellyheads so a venue that was run and organized by the scene could be rented [a permanent squatted venue just wasn’t an option in sydney at the time]. eventually enough money was raised and a two story building with a courtyard was rented behind the brewery right in the city near central station.

this was what everybody had wished for.

a pool table and video projector was put upstairs where film nights were held, and a vegan cafe, stage and p.a. downstairs. many bands, fundraisers for different causes, different community groups and students used the space, even running kids’ days. it also had its own newspaper, printed by the prisoners action group, who had a space upstairs. this is where most tutti parze gigs happened, with only the rarest organized as a fundraiser by someone else at a pub. it was because of the collective’s politix and bands like tutti parze’s revolutionary position, their access to and spreading of ideas to young people (now including those outside the anarcho punk ghetto) and the active spreading of anti-authoritarian propaganda — and most probably tutti parze’s blatant disregard for the law — that the authorities started to take an interest. tutti parze often were seen to encourage their audience to break the law, and it may have been for this reason the police chose a tutti parze gig to raid jellyheads.

this did not exactly go as the cops expected, with a slight ‘roughing up’ and isolating of the undercover cops who infiltrated before the raid [everyone knew who they were], the ‘collection’ of a police hat and radio that was used to negotiate the release of 14 audience members detained by the cops, and the cops ending up leaving with no arrests/captives. tutti parze then played a ripper of a victory gig. but the cops would learn from their mistakes.

around 1991 a gathering of the tribes was held in nimbin, a town established by hippies after the aquarius festival in the early ’70s. this brought punx and bands from the whole east coast of australia together for 3 days of chaos and fun, with many staying at the now [sadly] defunct terania creek vegan anarchist community.

In August 1979 a contingent of 100 police arrived in Terania Creek to ensure a bulldozer could resume work on reopening a logging track to be used by sawmillers. However, courageous people stood firm in a protest that lasted for over a month, compelled to save a part of the largest single area of subtropical rainforest in Australia, the Big Scrub. In 1979 only 2% of the big scrub remained. Terania Creek was the first time direct action tactics were used anywhere in the world in the defence of a forest. The image of somebody defying a bull dozer is somewhat cliche these days but in 1979 it was a bold new idea. The scientific debate that ensued had a profound impact on rain forest policy throughout Australia. Terania Creek was finally protected, becoming part of Nightcap National Park, and its spectacular waterfall was consequently named in honour of the protestors.

d o o f d o o f d o o f : helga makes musical history

with the onset of dance music culture, massive sound systems and noise complaints, jellyheads folded, the end of the first and only alternative venue in sydney. punx picnics continued (with bands); police tolerating the stolen electricity [or they didn’t know]. members of tutti parze started to want different things out of the band and to go in different directions. the scene was changing fast, not always for the better, drugs being a major problem emerging in the scene and like all good things tutti parze eventually disbanded after what may have been one of their best, tightest and most powerful sounding gigs. the party was over, long live the party!

“Existing pre-doof in Sydney in the eighties and early nineties, there was a collective called The Jellyheads, a group dedicated to transmitting anarchist principles at a time when the main liberationist and anti-corporate mantra was transmitted in the west through punk music. Jellyheads community fundraisers and gigs had Crass/Conflict style local bands, vegan cafes and info on various activist operations like ‘Stop the City’. Sydney Park was originally reclaimed as a music space by this tribe with the Punk Picnics still a regular annual event in town. The initial free techno parties were mistrusted by some of the punk contingent. Graffiti in the park read “Kill Non Bossy Raver Scum, Techno=Disco”, representing the sentiment of those few who didn’t understand that the emerging techno movement was in it for the same reasons. A group called Mahatma Propaghandi created a bridge from full-on punk power to more Balearic rhythms and dance grooves containing the same liberationist message. As members of Jellyheads turned on the acid house explosion, the Vibe Tribe – a loose collective of people drawn together to channel a powerful energy through allowing events to present themselves with maximum community involvement and co-creation – was born as a response to the mainstream commercialisation of the new rave craze.” ~ Peter Strong, ‘Doofstory: Sydney Park to the Desert’, in Free NRG: Notes from the Edge of the Dancefloor, edited by Graham St John, an OzAuthors/Pluto Press co-production, 2001

band members then spread around the australia, s.e. asia and the usa forging new lives and getting to know who they are, starting families and generally finding out what they wanted from life outside tutti parze. becoming travelers, activists, perfecting or learning a trade, lecturers, teachers and cooks, starting new musical projects or working in community health and development. as was said before, some would make it and, sadly, some would struggle and lose. it would be nearly 20 yrs until all surviving members would finally touch base with each other again… but time heals all wounds so don’t be surprised if, like rotten old zombies, tutti parze rise from the grave some place, some time, when least expected but most needed…

thank you all who were involved in the past and those in the future, sorry to those we failed to mention… cheers [oh yes don’t forget the warehouse and black rose anarchist bookshop, cheers for your support in the past], our politics may have changed over the last 20 yrs [we no longer believe in violent revolution] but we still believe we can all create a better world… peace, love and anarchy. only through cultivating the mind and body will this objective be achieved, something we can only do ourselves. if we want to change the world for the better we must change ourselves for the better, it is to this end we encourage our comrades on the path to realization and manifestation of the grand ultimate, return to the state of the uncarved block. TUTTI PARZE… stand together as individuals, united for a common good
thanks to all those who cared, love, peace & friendship
TUTTI PARZE – 2008
please correct the bad spelling and punctuation, we’re punk rockers after all!

Hungry Dave (Regression) : The Sydney scene continued into the ’90s but it was said that it had seen better days re: lack of venues, a lot of people getting out of punk and wanting to play more complicated or hip music like techno-metal or slap-funk or whatever. None the less a few bands kept it going… [Tutti Parze] was one of the most popular. Musically they were in the vein of British hardcore (Crass, Concrete Sox, Discharge) with extreme class war lyrics [lol]. The band formed in 1988 and broke up in 1991.

THE owners of Australia’s biggest uranium mines paid a former undercover Victoria Police officer to infiltrate environment and Aboriginal groups in Melbourne.

The former police intelligence unit officer, known as Mehmet, was hired by North Ltd — before its takeover by Rio Tinto in late 2000 — and US nuclear and defence giant General Atomics to spy on Friends of the Earth, Jabiluka Action Group, Nuclear Free Australia, radio station 3CR and radical Melbourne bookstore Barricade Books.

Mehmet first infiltrated the Jabiluka Action Group and Friends of the Earth in 1998 as part of an undercover police operation. It is not known why police chose to infiltrate and monitor the groups, though both were involved in anti-uranium protests.

After leaving the police in late 1999 to set up his own security company, Universal Axiom, Mehmet retained his covert police persona as a Kurdish migrant concerned about indigenous and mining issues.

He was able to stay inside the groups and provide information to the mining companies about campaigns being planned against their respective uranium mining operations until his cover was blown in mid-2001, when Friends of the Earth received an anonymous phone call warning about Mehmet’s true identity.

Deputy Police Commissioner Simon Overland told The Age it was a breach of the Police Regulations Act for an officer to use a covert identity after leaving the force or to use information gathered in the course of official duties for private gain.

“It’s a criminal offence and we would take that very seriously. We have prosecuted people in the past and we will continue to do so when they do that,” he said.

Mr Overland also acknowledged some covert operations by Victoria Police in the late 1990s were not as accountable as they should have been.

“It is pretty much a matter of public record that there were issues with the way activities in this area operated in the past,” Mr Overland said. “But I do make the point that it is eight years ago … I want to make it very clear that that is not the way we do business now.”

Friends of the Earth spokesman Cam Walker said there was no justification for police infiltration of the group in the late 1990s, especially as it was already holding regular meetings with the police intelligence unit at the time to discuss its campaigns.

Mr Walker said it was unethical for mining companies to pay the former undercover officer to continue to spy on groups opposed to uranium mining.

“It is inappropriate on so many levels. We are a membership-based community group,” Mr Walker said. “We are no risk of violence against the police or the companies. We see this as a criminal act, particularly as the guy came to be here in the first place as a police officer.”

Former North Ltd executives have confirmed the engagement of Mehmet’s company, Universal Axiom, as well as two other corporate intelligence firms, British-owned Control Risks Group [MELBOURNE, Control Risks Group Pty Ltd, 1A Yarra Street, South Yarra, Victoria 3141, Australia, Tel: + 61 3 9826 5540, Fax: +61 3 9826 9560, crmelbourne AT control-risks.com] and a Melbourne firm headed by another former undercover Victoria Police officer.

“We were facing a very strong, active protest outside our Melbourne headquarters because of Jabiluka and we needed security advice to protect our staff,” a former company executive said.

“We were also facing a takeover and we had to take steps to ensure the security of our internal information and boardroom discussions.”

It is believed only a handful of North Ltd executives were aware of the engagement of Mehmet, who was first hired to assess the quality of information supplied by other private intelligence firms.

A spokesman for Rio Tinto, which acquired North Ltd in late 2000, said the company was not aware of North Ltd’s engagement of security consultants.

“We hire security companies and consultants to support our operations worldwide,” the Rio Tinto spokesman said. “However, the purpose of these contracts is solely for the protection of the group’s assets and personnel, it is completely defensive. These services are not used for infiltration of competitors or anyone else.”

US company General Atomics and its Australian subsidiary, Heathgate Resources, declined to answer questions about Mehmet, who also provided personal protection to visiting General Atomics executives.

A Heathgate spokeswoman said the company was privately owned and had a policy of not responding to media questions.

The outing of a rat in the ranks

THE man on the other end of the line had some valuable information.

He did not give his name but he gave a phone number through which the Melbourne branch of Friends of The Earth could reach him. He wanted to alert the group to the presence of a spy who had been in their ranks for more than two years. But he also wanted revenge, claiming the spy had deceived him in a business deal.

The Friends of the Earth nuclear campaigner who picked up the phone on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, was told that one of their most eager activists was working undercover for the mining companies they were campaigning against.

Worse, the man said, the activist known as Mehmet had been a Victorian Police covert officer when he made his first entry into Melbourne’s anti-uranium crowd in 1998. The caller also claimed Mehmet had worked for Federal Government intelligence organisations.

The informant told of how he would drive Mehmet to Brunswick’s radical bookstore Barricade Books — a hangout for Melbourne’s activist community — where he would change into his “street gear” before beginning his shift behind the counter.

The information provided by the caller tallied with the private concerns held by several anti-nuclear campaigners who first came across Mehmet at Jabiluka Action Group events in 1998. Though he was helpful and eager to volunteer to hand out leaflets, some thought Mehmet overly pushy. He was always asking questions, taking notes and lobbying to be the liaison between the green and Aboriginal groups.

Now armed with the information provided by the mysterious anonymous caller, The Friends of the Earth Melbourne office delved into Mehmet’s background.

They searched the Australian Securities Investment Commission database for a company called Universal Axiom, which the informant had said was the name of Mehmet’s firm. Sure enough, Universal Axiom existed. It was set up in January 2000, just weeks after Mehmet quit the police.

An internet search revealed Universal Axiom’s website, which promoted the firm’s ability to “address difficult and sensitive issues”.

The Friends of the Earth campaigner who took the initial call from the informant dialled the number he was given.

The man answered and repeated his allegations against Mehmet, hinting that the companies he worked for were US nuclear giant General Atomics, owner of South Australia’s Beverley uranium mine, and Melbourne’s North Ltd, owner of Jabiluka before Rio Tinto’s takeover in late 2000.

A warning went around groups such as Nuclear Free Australia, Barricade Books and radio 3CR.

For those who had long held doubts about Mehmet, the outing of his true identity and purpose explained much about his behaviour.

It made it clear why he had been so angry a few months earlier when he was excluded from the small protest to mark the official opening of the Beverley mine in February 2001.

When the handful of protesters returned from the SA desert and back into mobile phone range, they were greeted by a series of increasingly furious messages from Mehmet.

“It was a bit weird at the time. We couldn’t work out why he was so desperate to be at the opening. Maybe being there with us would get him another pay cheque,” one of the protesters said.
