Barcelona, 1936

Barcelona, 1936
from Homage to Catalonia, by George Orwell.

This was in late December 1936…

The Anarchists were still in virtual control of Catalonia and the revolution was still in full swing. To anyone who had been there since the beginning it probably seemed even in December or January that the revolutionary period was ending; but when one came straight from England the aspect of Barcelona was something startling and overwhelming.

It was the first time that I had ever been in a town where the working class was in the saddle. Practically every building of any size had been seized by the workers and was draped with red flags or with the red and black flag of the Anarchists; every wall was scrawled with the hammer and sickle and with the initials of the revolutionary parties; almost every church had been gutted and its images burnt. Churches here and there were being systematically demolished by gangs of workmen.

Every shop and cafe had an inscription saying that it had been collectivised; even the bootblacks had been collectivized and their boxes painted red and black. Waiters and shop-walkers looked you in the face and treated you as an equal. Servile and even ceremonial forms of speech had temporarily disappeared. Nobody said ‘Senor’ or ‘Don’ or even ‘Usted’; everyone called everyone else ‘Comrade’ or ‘Thou’, and said ‘Salud!’ instead of ‘Buenos dias’.

Tipping had been forbidden by law since the time of Primo de Rivera; almost my first experience was receiving a lecture from a hotel manager for trying to tip a lift-boy. There were no private motor-cars, they had all been commandeered, and the trams and taxis and much of the other transport were painted red and black. The revolutionary posters were everywhere, flaming from the walls in clean reds and blues that made the few remaining advertisements look like daubs of mud. Down the Ramblas, the wide central artery of the town where crowds of people streamed constantly to and fro, the loud-speakers were bellowing revolutionary songs all day and far into the night.

And it was the aspect of the crowds that was the queerest thing of all. In outward appearance it was a town in which the wealthy classes had practically ceased to exist. Except for a small number of women and foreigners there were no ‘well-dressed’ people at all. Practically everyone wore rough working-class clothes, or blue overalls or some variant of militia uniform.

All this was queer and moving. There was much in this that I did not understand, in some ways I did not not even like it, but I recognized it immediately as a state of affairs worth fighting for. Also, I believed that things were as they appeared, that this was really a workers’ State and that the entire bourgeoisie had either fled, been killed or voluntarily come over to the workers’ side; I did not realise that great numbers of well-to-do bourgeois were simply lying low and disguising themselves as proletarians for the time being.

Strangling the life out of fascism : Spain, 1936

‘Strangle the life out of fascism’

The Iron Column defended its actions against the campaign of vilification mounted by the Spanish Communist Party and the Republican government in the following manifesto aimed at showing that its militants were not given to rhetoric and meant business:

“. . . As anarchists, we who – under the familiar denomination ‘Iron Column’ – struggle against the clerical and militarist reaction on the Teruel Front are concerned, of course, with the problems of the front, but also with those of the rearguard. Consequently when we realised that in Valencia things were not moving in the direction that we wished, when we noted that the rearguard, far from being a reassurance to us, was a focus of concern and misgivings, we resolved to intervene and, to that end, we dispatched the following requests to the relevant organisations:

(1) that the Civil Guard be disarmed and disbanded;
(2) that all of the armed forces of the state in the rearguard (Assault Guards, Carabineros, Seguridad, etc.) be sent immediately to the front and;
(3) that all records and archives held in capitalist and state institutions be destroyed forthwith.”

These requests had their foundations in revolutionary and ideological considerations. As anarchists and as revolutionaries, we considered the existence of the Civil Guard to be a threat; it is a reactionary corps that has, throughout its life and more especially during the present revolt, clearly displayed its mentality and its intentions. The Civil Guard was odious in our eyes for many reasons and we had no confidence in it. So we asked that it might be disarmed and proceeded to disarm it.

We asked that all of the armed corps be moved up to the front lines because men and weapons are in short supply there, while in the city, under the present state of affairs, their presence was more of a provocation than a necessity. We have been halfway successful on this count and we shall press on until our objective has been completely achieved.

Finally we asked for the destruction of all the documents that represented a whole past era of tyranny and oppression against which our free consciences had revolted. Let us destroy the records and give consideration to requisitioning those buildings that, like the court buildings, have been used in other times to entomb revolutionaries in prisons and have no raison d’être today, now that we find ourselves at the dawning of a libertarian society.

Such objectives brought us into Valencia and this explains all that we did in the manner deemed most appropriate.

Later, during our stay in Valencia, we observed that whereas efforts to acquire weapons foundered due to our lack of funds, there was a huge quantity of gold and other precious metals in many places – this prompted us to requisition the gold, silver and platinum of some jewellers in insignificant quantities which were surrendered to the Organisation. The above is what we have done. Now let us examine what we did not do.

We are accused of looting buildings. This is a lie. We defy anyone to present us with an account of this and to show that our men were not acting out of necessity but from mere caprice and a desire to create confusion. We stand accused of murdering people for amusement. This is a foul calumny. What have we done to deserve this reputation? What crimes have we committed? A deplorable episode, which we are first to lament and to condemn, appears to be the prosecution evidence. We had nothing to do with the death of our socialist comrade José Pardo Aracil. It was shown, on the very night of his death, that no member of our column had any hand in it. It has never occurred to us to attack the socialists nor any other antifascist group, much less to do so in the treacherous fashion in which Pardo was attacked. This does not mean that we renege on our aims, for these are the sole motivations for our fight: we realise, however, that at the present moment, internecine warfare would be a crime. We are facing a formidable enemy and all our exertions must be bent to his destruction. In these crucial times for Spain’s future, our position is clear and unmistakable. We shall fight with all our manpower, all our energies, all our enthusiasm in order to confound the vileness of fascism forever. We struggle to make a reality of the social revolution. Let us march towards Anarchy. Consequently, here and now, we shall stand by everything that makes it possible to live with greater freedom, to smash the yokes that oppress us and to destroy the vestiges of the past.

To every worker, every revolutionary, every anarchist, let us say: struggle, wherever you may be – at the front line or in the rearguard, against all the enemies of your liberty. Strangle the life out of fascism. But see to it also that as a result of your efforts no dictatorial regime is installed, no continuation (with all the vices and defects) of that state of affairs that we are striving to eradicate. With weapons now and with working tools later on, learn to live without tyrants, learn to emancipate yourselves, for this is the only path to freedom. Such, clearly expounded, is the thinking of the ‘Iron Column’.

Comrades! Death to fascism! Long live the social revolution! Long live anarchy!

The Asher & @ndy Show

Asher & Andy get all tuff and stuff …

From @ndy’s Blog ‘Slackbastard’:

    Asher Jul 17th, 2006 at 11:50 am

I have a patch and a badge with that design on them

    @ndy Jul 17th, 2006 at 11:26 pm

I wonder how the bonehead in question feels about his being immortalised in this fashion? Will other boneheads want to join him? And so set about striking their heads repeatedly against blackfellas’ boots? Stranger things have happened!

Although the subject matter is not funny at all and merely demonstrates yet again how ruthless and violent these Fight Dem Back Criminals really are when they can get away with it, there IS an amusing aspect to this. Anyone who has seen a photograph of Asher Goldman would be distinctly unimpressed with his “tough guy” credentials and probably, like me, genuinely [mistake] him for a very dirty and scruffy girl.

Well, while it may not strike Peter as particularly amusing, it is, at least, ironic.

As previously suggested, I doubt that the bonehead in question was expecting to have his posturing as a representative of a (homocidal) racial supremacy questioned in such a thorough fashion, especially by such a deeply skeptical member of the public. However, for an image of the outcome of their disagreement — presumably, one centred on the subject of the victim’s genuine fitness to constitute, alongside his comrades, a political elite, and to exercise a ruthless and deeply racist form of authoritarian rule over the masses… like, on account of his white skin… to then be used in an anti-fascist propaganda campaign…

Anyway, what’s wrong with scruffy girls?!?

@ndy is another gutless little worm who will do anything to avoid doing his own dirty work. His brother, and anyone else for that matter, will apparently suffice as a “champion” to fight his battles by proxy. Typical jelly backed Lefty tactics really. Darp does precisely the same thing. You can see them now, can’t you? Running over to a bunch of vicious Blacks and pointing out a lone White Nationalist. “Smash the Fash!” they’ll squeal, like the school girls they are.

My own dirty work? But Peter, I wash dishes!

[And what’s this thing you’ve got with “girls”?]

Seriously though: I can only assume that your reference to my “brother” is a result of something Ben Weerheym claimed on his now deleted blog ‘Leftywatch’. To cut a long story short: any and all information regarding my “brother” was provided to Ben by aketus, posing as ‘cricket guy 88’ (or something similar). The story aketus relayed to Ben revolved around my having a non-existent brother, who was described as being both an ex-bikie, an ex-con, and as having a great deal of love for his family. Anyway, the ‘evidence’ for this “brother” was to be based on the non-existent minutes taken at a non-existent meeting of a non-existent group, the ‘Geelong Anarchist Group’… or ‘GAG’ for short.

Get it?

Ben didn’t. Well, not until it was pointed out to him. By aketus.

I assume Ben is yet to inform you of this prank? Was aketus wrong when he wrote that “Everyone on both sides of this game except you knows [Leftywatch is] all made up”? Or are you content to trade on the lies told to you by anti-racists?

In any case, I never threaten individuals with violence. What’s the point? Despite your hero Hitler’s utter contempt for the intellectual capacities of the masses, I believe that most people prefer less, not more, bullshit in their media diet.

As for “vicious blacks”… is there really any other kind, Peter? You, for one, don’t appear to think so. Nor do the racists who belong to Blood & Honour.

A random example from Russia :

But what unites them above all is a hatred of foreigners, in particular of anyone with dark features hailing from the Caucusus region of southern Russia or from Asia or Africa. The views of Semyon Tokmakov, a convicted [bonehead] who brutally attacked a black US Marine in Moscow seven years ago and still espouses [bonehead] rhetoric, is typical. “Why have they [foreigners] all come here?” he told Associated Press. “They bring nothing but drugs and Aids [and] every day they harass and steal our women.”

Nor do [boneheads] make any distinction between children and adults or the young and the old. In St Petersburg, a crucible of [bonehead] activity, a nine-year-old Tajik girl was murdered last year and her case was no exception. Hurshida Sultanova was stabbed to death in front of her father by a group of about 10 [boneheads]. She was knifed 11 times. When asked whether he felt sorry for the murdered Tajik girl, Tokmakov did not bat an eyelid. “When you kill cockroaches you don’t feel sorry for them, do you?”

In recent years, experts say, the [boneheads’] methods have become far more brutal. “They now use screw drivers and knives and increasingly their attacks end in murder,” Sergey Belikov, a specialist in [boneheads], told the weekly Argumenty i fakty publication. “Earlier, there was an unspoken rule to leave children and the old alone. That has been abandoned. The first wave of [boneheads] [in the early 1990s] could be called simple hooligans. Today’s generation are professional killers.”

Another example chosen almost at random, this time from the United States: Jacob D. Robida.

Oh, and is this funny?

IR: Once you had amassed enough evidence to prosecute, how did you arrest your suspects?

GERMAN: These groups tend to revere their martyrs and they talk about martyrdom all the time, about how “if anybody ever tries to arrest me, it’s going to be to the death” and “I’m not going to be taken alive,” that kind of stuff.

So, as we were preparing for the arrest, we tried to create a situation where we could control the environment. Instructional classes were kind of a normal thing for them. This was an activity they were constantly involved in, trying to learn police techniques so that they could combat them. So we decided I would teach them how to pick out of handcuffs with a lock pick set. That way, we would get everyone to put handcuffs on themselves. It worked perfectly. I had a bunch of lock pick sets and I just said, “Hey, this is something I taught myself to do and I can teach you how to do it, too.” So everybody grabbed a set of handcuffs and put them on.

Now go away.

You’re a boring, racist fool.

‘Accidental definition of an anarchist’

Steve Waldon
The Age
July 20, 2006

NOTEBOOK

“AN ANARCHIST society is a voluntary, non-hierarchical society in which the political and social structures are organised so that all people have free and equal access to the wealth and decision-making power of that society.”

So says the footnote on the invitation from the Anarchist Media Institute, a movement that, if nothing else, confirms this city’s eclecticism.

You probably thought anarchy was all about wilful individualism or collective disruption — about structures deemed necessary for good governance being undermined by noncompliance in the name of personal freedom from busybody authoritarianism. But a small gathering on a city street at lunchtime yesterday heard that anarchy, as portrayed above, is woefully misunderstood.

“In Spain, France and many parts of the world, it is accepted as a legitimate political philosophy,” said Joseph Toscano, spokesman for the Anarchist Media Institute and abundantly productive supplier of material to newspaper letters editors.

As gatherings go, it would be safe to report that Melbourne’s streets have not seen much like it. It was not, Dr Toscano said, a demonstration, nor did it qualify as a rally. It was a simple assembly to mark the 70th anniversary of the Spanish Revolution.

The assembly comprised a dozen doughty citizens, some minor pamphleteering (boo! to the sedition laws, yay! to inalienable human rights), and a couple of banners proclaiming the Eureka Stockade as a definitive study in ordinary folk standing up for their rights against tyrannical authorities.

All this took place in front of a dull Queen Street building from which, in a second floor office, the Spanish tourism bureau dispenses advice to potential visitors.

When Dr Toscano said anarchy was widely misunderstood, he was almost certainly right. In a world awash with big ideas and their believers and detractors, anarchy remains a social and political curiosity.

Not so for millions of Spaniards in 1936, he said. They objected so ardently to a military coup against their democratically elected government, they “raided gun shops and armouries and stopped the military in their tracks”.

Dr Toscano said that was a social revolution that presented anarchism as a genuine alternative to communism and capitalism.

And seven decades later, he said, people still wanted the freedom to organise their lives without overbearing interference from governments, religions and the corporate world.

In 1933, George Bernard Shaw told a New York conference that anarchists were an occasional paradox.

“The ordinary man is an anarchist. He wants to do as he likes. He may want his neighbour to be governed, but he himself doesn’t want to be governed,” Shaw said.

Dr Toscano said anarchy was not about shunning all governance, but adopting a different model in which “the state” was replaced by locally appointed community committees, through which common wealth would be fairly deployed.

Think what you will about anarchy, but its proponents cannot be faulted for punctuality.

The gathering was due to start at 12.30, which it did. It was advertised to last 30 minutes, which it also did.

So passed another Melbourne lunchtime: food for sustenance and food for thought. And just a little sedition on the side.

Redwatch Poland : It’s Alive!

Not unexpectedly, Redwatch Poland is back. On a new server…

More later.

Bad news for Redwatch UK :

‘MPs in move to close far-right website’
Matthew Taylor
The Guardian
July 20, 2006

A far-right website that lists the addresses of politicians, teachers and trade unionists is facing closure after a series of attacks on anti-racist campaigners.

A delegation of union activists and MPs will meet Home Office ministers today in the wake of the latest incident in which anti-fascist campaigner Alec McFadden, president of Merseyside TUC, whose details are listed on the extremist Redwatch site, was stabbed in the face.

“He was very lucky not to be blinded,” said Angela Eagle, MP for Mr McFadden’s Wallasey constituency, who is heading tomorrow’s delegation. “This happened on his doorstep and in front of his daughter … It is just one of several incidents linked to the website that I have heard about in the past few weeks in the north-west…”

The moral of the story? Stabbing anti-racists is neither big nor clever, and could well get you into trouble with the state.

Many Young Liberals are racist, sexist, homophobic nerds. And proud. Who knew?

I am shocked.

Shocked and stunned.

Collingwood has now lost three matches in a row!

‘Malthouse defends Pies’
The Age
Michael Gleeson
July 17, 2006

“COLLINGWOOD fell from the top four yesterday and faces falling out of the finals altogether after its fourth loss in five games, with coach Michael Malthouse admitting the team deserved to be in its predicament…”

NSW Young Liberals : “Developing Tomorrow’s [Racist, Sexist, Homophobic] Leaders”… Today!

In other news, the entrenched racist, sexist and homophobic attitudes of leading members of the Young Tories have been exposed. Again. This time on Lateline; prompted, perhaps, by the release of video footage of the antics of some young, rather illiberal students at last year’s NUS conference, shot by independent filmmakers Vanessa Hughes and Jessica Tyrrell (a previous example of their work is available here).

In a pre-emptive strike launched early last week, worried Tory Party officials lodged an official complaint with their ABC, alleging “threatening behaviour” and “unethical journalism” on the part of Lateline reporter John Stewart… or possibly Janine Cohen, Four Corners reporter and author of the “The Right Stuff”: “a case study into a political party struggling with democracy”.

Ho ho ho.

But like… whatever. I see no reason to panic. In all fairness to the Tories, there’s little doubt in my mind that the complaint is justified. In informing the Party that they will be exposing racist elements within it, journalists violate the sacred duty of the press: barracking for HoWARd. And declaring one’s intention to do otherwise does indeed threaten vested interests…

Still, if there’s anything worse than the Young Tories it’s Young Labor:

‘Learning the easy way’
Jane Fraser
The Australian
July 18, 2006

MARK Latham, Labor leader manque, and once the scourge of private schooling, has endorsed a book on backroom politics written by former Cranbrook pupil John Hyde Page, a Young Liberal turned law student, to be published next week. “John Hyde Page has made a very important statement about the corrosive impact of machine politics on young people in this country.

The Young Liberals are horrendous and, if anything, Young Labor is worse,” Latham says. How does Page feel about the recommendation? “The politics he depicted in his book, The Latham Diaries, are those with which I became familiar, so I very much value his endorsement.” Page hopes the old truism that books about the Liberal Party don’t sell is turned on its head, and that The Education of a Young Liberal entertains with its account of the inside machinations of a political party.

To be continued…

Ain’t it Grand?

‘Contempt case over rally video’
Bob Egelko
San Francisco Chronicle
July 18, 2006

A federal judge has ordered a freelance journalist to surrender video footage of a July 2005 clash between San Francisco police and anarchist demonstrators or face jail for contempt of court.

The journalist, Josh Wolf, said Monday he would refuse to turn over the tapes, even if U.S. District Judge William Alsup rejects his legal defense at a hearing Thursday.

“I am prepared to go to jail,” said Wolf, 24. He said that his tapes don’t show the event federal prosecutors say they are investigating — the alleged vandalism of a police car — and that yielding the videos would turn him into “a surveillance camera for the government.”

Following 9:11, the US Federal Government decided to take the opportunity to clamp down harder on political dissent, the radical environmental movement — labelled ‘terrorist’ by the FBI — being a primary target. One of the chief legal mechanisms through which the FBI is attempting to destroy the movement is — as in the case of Josh Wolf — the Grand Jury, and one of those facing persecution for his beliefs is Daniel McGowan. The family and friends of Daniel have recently added a faq to their site; among other things, this faq explains the practice of the Grand Jury in this way:

What is a Grand Jury?

The primary function of the modern grand jury is to review the evidence presented by the prosecutor and determine whether there is probable cause to return an indictment. The original purpose of the grand jury was to act as a buffer between the king (and his prosecutors) and the citizens, but many feel the grand jury rubber stamps indictments. The grand jury does not even hear conflicting evidence and it is left to the good faith of the prosecutor to present any conflicting evidence. Since the 1950s, the power of federal grand juries has grown enormously. Federal courts have authorized ever-expanding investigative power. Because the evidence is in control of the prosecutor, and witnesses cannot bring their lawyers into the grand jury, critics have noted that we have only the good faith of the government prosecutor to rely upon.

Unlike potential jurors in regular trials, grand jurors are not screened at all for any biases or other improper factors. Grand juries are secret proceedings and the prosecutor, grand jurors, and the grand jury stenographer are prohibited from disclosing what happened before the grand jury. Secrecy was originally designed to protect the grand jurors from improper pressures.

Judge Sol Wechsler, the former Chief Judge of New York State, was quoted as saying, “A grand jury would indict a ham sandwich.”

Daniel was indicted by a federal grand jury in Oregon on his charges. For more information on grand juries, see here.

“White Terror”

White Terror (Dir: Daniel Schweizer, 2005), an hour-long documentary exploring the (already well-documented) international neo-Nazi networks centred on Blood & Honour, screened on SBS this evening. It was ‘okay’ in that, on the one hand, it revealed nothing new, but, on the other, may cause some tiny number of people in Australia to possibly pay more attention to the fact that their brothers and sisters — with the full support of the Russian state — are systematically being exterminated — stabbed, shot and beaten to death — by Russian boneheads.

This is unlikely though: the popularisation and commercialisation of ‘punk’, for example, has been accompanied by a concomitant process of gentrification and depoliticisation. In short, (local) punks — with a few honourable exceptions, natch — don’t give a shit. In fact, many are happy to play along — literally. For example, in Melbourne, Blood & Honour (Australia) has, over the course of the last few years, enjoyed holding meetings and playing gigs at the Birmingham Hotel in Fitzroy; the few voices raised in opposition denounced as ‘fascist’.

A radically incomplete list of victims of neo-Nazi violence in Russia over the course of the last few years includes:

April 16, 2006

Aleksandr “Shtopor” Ryukhin : 19 year-old student and punk rock fan. Stabbed to death by a group of 6-8 boneheads while on his way to a gig.

April 7, 2006

Lampsar Samba [Lamsar Samba Sell] : 28-year-old student, born in Senegal. Activist, member of ‘African Unity’. Shot to death while leaving a nightclub.

February 25, 2006

Ainur Bulekbayeva : 27-year-old worker, an ethnic Azeri, stabbed to death while walking home from work. Her friend and co-worker was also stabbed, but survived.

January 7, 2006

Evgeny Bagdasaryan : 13-year-old Armenian migrant from Uzbekistan. Unidentified assailants stabbed Evgeny Bagdasaryan 34 times.

November 13, 2005

Timur Kacharava : Anarchist, musician and student, 20-year-old Timur and his friend were ambushed by a group of 8-10 boneheads outside a bookshop. Timur was stabbed to death.

October 9, 2005

Enrique Hurtado : 18-year-old Peruvian student. Beaten to death while attending a sports complex.

June 19, 2004

Nikolai Girenko : 64-year-old prominent human rights defender, Professor of Ethnology and expert on racism and discrimination in the Russian Federation. Shot to death in his home in St. Petersburg.

February 9, 2004

Khursehda Sultonov : 9-year-old Tajik girl, stabbed to death while walking home accompanied by her father and cousin.

July 4, 1998

Lin “Spit” Newborn and Dan Shersty : 24-year-old Lin and 20-year old Dan were shot to death in a desert outside of Las Vegas. “Ross Hack, who fled to Europe when he was identified as a suspect two years ago, has never been charged for his involvement in the murder. According to the defense attorney, Ross Hack has been on a “two-year vacation in Europe,” courtesy of his rich father.”

For more information on state-endorsed “White Terror” in Russia, see : Human Rights First, ‘New Reports Document Deteriorating Human Rights Situation in Russia’ [June 27, 2006]; especially ‘Minorities Under Siege: Hate Crimes and Intolerance in the Russian Federation’ Also : ‘Racist Violence on the Rise’, Andrei Nesterov (June 8, 2006).

For more on Russian antifa… I can find not much other than an article from a Russian ‘alternative’ newsweakly called the eXile. It’s republished — without attribution — on the libcom site. The curious thing about the article — apart from its mocking tone* — is its publisher. According to their blurb: “Edward Limonov, the avant-garde writer and radical politician, wrote the forward for the book [The eXile: Sex, Drugs, and Libel in the New Russia], and has been a regular contributor (when he’s not serving time in jail).” When he’s not penning ‘forwards’ for his mates (or doing time) Edward Limonov is also the leader of the neo-fascist National Bolshevik Party: this would help explain both the article and the fact that the eXile advertises the Party on its site.

*Had I had the good sense to call Edward Limonov before embarking on this fool’s errant, I could have saved myself a lot of trouble. Limonov told me, “I have no interest in these guys. They’re irrational.” After all my efforts to secure an interview, I can safely say, he’s right. Ukrop’s name says it all, really. AntiFA is the dill of Russia’s extremist politics: bland, irrelevant, and easily ignored.

For more on Blood & Honour Australia, interested parties may like to attend the upcoming fascist Sydney Forum* (August 26-27), where Welf Herfurth will be acting as MC, introducing speakers including Dr. Jim Saleam and Andrew Fraser.

Welf will be happy to answer all your questions, especially those concerning his participation in assisting Blood & Honour organise a benefit gig at the Hamilton Hotel in Newcastle on February 25 this year.

*SPECIAL NOTICE: READ CAREFULLY; SECURITY MEASURES IN VIEW OF POSSIBLE DISRUPTION

This year’s Forum might be demonstrated against. In order to assist us in ensuring we can get things rolling, we have instituted an otherwise regrettable security measure.

We are not passing out the Saturday venue details until Saturday morning. It is therefore essential we have your phone number (and/or e-mail address) whilst in Sydney or you make it your business to contact us on the available phone lines.

To get the venue details: you will have to telephone either of the two numbers here after 7.30 am on the Saturday morning, August 26 or you will be phoned by us. It is our promise that plenty of time will be available for any Sydney resident to reach the venue by 9.15 am for a ‘start’ at 9.30 am. Phone 0407 732 868 OR 0411 669 181.

Agendas will be given out at the hall.

We sincerely apologise for the necessity of these arrangements.

The Sunday section of the Forum will be held at 725 Princes Highway, Tempe.

“Two myths have grown up around the event, which of course was a milestone in the long history of working class struggle. One is that the opposition to the Mosley fascists was almost entirely Jewish. The other is that the “battle” was between the protesters and the Blackshirts. It was not – it was a battle with the police.

There was a quarter to half a million people in the East End streets that Sunday. Many of them were Jews because, as Mosley knew and had campaigned for some years and so designed his provocative action on anti-Semitic propaganda, Stepney and Whitechapel had at that time the largest Jewish community in Britain. But it was numbered in tens, not hundreds, of thousands. The packed crowds that day consisted of many thousands of non-Jewish Londoners.

As far as the religious leaders of the Jewish community were concerned, the Board of Deputies of British Jews, their top authority, made special calls the previous week opposing any physical confrontation with the Mosleyites, urging their congregation to stay indoors. They pursued the same fatal policy that the Jewish leaders in Germany had pursued only four or five years before when faced with the brownshirts of Hitler. We know where that led.

But their followers had more sense. They came out in their thousands. The opposition in the East End itself was organised largely by the grassroots Jewish organisations, the workers’ circles, the furniture and garment workers’ trades unions, by the shops and the workshops.”

KSL on the Spanish Revolution

The Kate Sharpley Library have just published a double issue of their bulletin, focusing on the Spanish Revolution of 1936, the Iron Column, and the execution of Salvador Puig Antich in 1974. It marks the seventieth anniversary of the Spanish Revolution with an account of life under libertarian communism in an Aragonese village and three articles on the famous Anarchist milita unit, the Iron Column (Columna de Hierro). Also included are articles on Salvador Puig Antich, the MIL (Movimiento Iberico de Liberacion / Iberian Liberation Movement) and the forthcoming film, Salvador. Publishing news includes two new KSL pamphlets (on the Iron Column and on the Budapest Commune, 1919), a book on the assassination attempt on Franco from the air (1948) and forthcoming pamphlets. The Bulletin concludes with an obituary of Paul Avrich.

KSL: Bulletin of the Kate Sharpley Library, #46-47 (July 2006), special Puig Antich / Spanish Revolution / Iron Column double issue.
