English Defence League

What do they know of England who only England know?

In the English city of Birmingham over the weekend, several hundred members of the League of Gentlemen kept busy defending England from Muslim hordes (Birmingham Santiago Melbourne, September 6, 2009). In the aftermath:

“BUSINESS AS USUAL”, The Stirrer, September 6, 2009: More than 30 [90] arrests, countless innocent citizens terrorised, dozens of traders facing drastically reduced takings. The grim statistics of another visit to Birmingham by the English Defence League on a day the police promised would be “business as usual”.

Upcoming fixtures on the EDL calendar include a protest outside Harrow mosque on September 11, a(nother) march in Luton on September 19, and a visit to Madchester on October 10. Well, were to include: seig heiling in front of the Harrow mosque has been /\CANCELLED/\ according to the EDL website:

Anti-Islamic activism in Australia has taken a more laid-back form to date, at least insofar as organised, public demonstrations are concerned (that is, leaving aside state and corporate propaganda, numerous but generally isolated incidents of abuse and harassment of presumed Muslims on the streets, and so on). In fact, one of the more comical events was the attempt by some locals in Melbourne to organise chicks in bikinis to march on a mosque in Brunswick — it was fail, but provides an amusing contrast to imgs of pale young Englishmen in polo shirts. Otherwise, while groups like the Australian Protectionist Party have been doing their best to capitalise on anti-Islamic feeling, they have not been able to generate much steam. This is also the case with the Melbourne-based fascist groupuscule ‘Nationalist Alternative’, which joined with Barbara Johnstone and other locals involved in the ‘Newport West Action Group’ (NWAG) to oppose the construction of a mosque in Newport.

Starting point for a Muslim conversation, Shakira Hussein, The Australian, September 1, 2007 (Review of People Like Us, Waleed Aly, Picador, 2007):

…Aly’s conclusion is titled “Seeking the human”, but the human is oddly absent from this book, which instead inhabits a world of media, survey results and texts. There is undoubtedly value in taking some of the international analysis and framing it in an Australian context. But it is important to do this in such a way as to make it sound fresh and vigorous. There is no freshness in Aly observing that the ambition of radical Islamists to “remake the human condition” is shared with “Lenin, Bakunin, Marx, Mao and Fukuyama”, not when John Gray (listed in the notes on sources but not cited in the text) has written about those who believe that they can remake the human condition: “the new world envisaged by al-Qa’ida is no different from the fantasies projected by Marx and Bakunin, by Lenin and Mao, and by the neo-liberal evangelists who so recently announced the end of history” (a reference to Fukuyama). It is depressing to read Aly talk about the parallels between the planned attack on the Greenwich observatory in Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent and al-Qa’ida’s attack on the World Trade Centre when this, too, is a parallel that Gray has already made…

“Depressing”, that is, if it weren’t absolutely fucking uniform for the (mis-)educated middle class. In Belgrade, Serbia, five anarchists — Ratibor Trivunac (28), Tadej Kurepa (24), Ivan Vulović (24), Sanja Đokić (19) and Nikola Mitrović (29) — have been arrested and charged with the crime of ‘international terrorism’ by Serbian authorities. (Another person, Ivan Savić (25), is wanted by police but remains ‘at large’.) Police accuse the six of throwing five Molotov cocktails at the Greek Embassy in Belgrade on August 25 — an action later claimed on behalf of a previously-unknown group called “Black Elijah” (?). The group stated that the action was taken in solidarity with Greek anarchist Thodoros Iliopoulos, until recently on a hunger strike in a Greek prison, one of the last of the individuals arrested as a result of the uprisings in Greece in December 2008. (Note that protest and resistance continues in Greece, as do attempts by authorities to repress dissent: the blog After the Greek Riots provides an excellent source of infos in English.)

All six of those identified by authorities appear to be members of the anarcho-syndicalist group ‘Anarhosindikalističke inicijative’ (ASI), a member of the anarcho-syndicalist international, the International Workers’ Association (AIT-IWA). Further, the ASI has been functioning as the IWA Secretariat for the previous few years, and one of those arrested, Ratibor Trivunac, as its General Secretary.

All five are currently being detained for a period of 30 days while police, presumably, assemble the case against them — such as it is. The accused deny the charges, and the ASI have stated that the group’s focus is upon (re-)building a radical labour movement in Serbia, not throwing stuff at Embassies.

The Serbian state has no official representation in Melbourne; the Embassy is located in Canberra, and there is a Consulate in Sydney.

More generally, while the ‘ideological state apparatus’ has almost invariably regarded ‘anarchism’ as being synonymous with ‘terrorism’ (see : ‘Daggers, Rifles and Dynamite: Anarchist Terrorism In Nineteenth Century Europe’, Terrorism and Political Violence, Vol.16, No.1, Spring 2004, pp.116-153 for background and Nightmares of Anarchy: Language and Cultural Change, 1870-1914, William M. Phillips, Bucknell University Press, 2004 on the early evolution of this propaganda, especially in North America), the War On Terror™ has provided a very useful political context in which to further extend already routine, and occasionally violent, repression of ‘progressive’ social movements in the West. (Violence and repression which forms a routine part of daily life in the Majority World/Global South.)

Protest zbog hapšenja anarhista
Blic Online
September 6, 2009

About 20 supporters Anarhosindikalističke initiatives gathered today in front of the Faculty of Philosophy to izrazali solidarity with the arrested for the attack on the Greek Embassy and requested their release.

One of the members of these initiatives Milan Stojanovic told reporters that the five arrested on charges of international terrorism, the four members of the initiative. He said that the methods used in the attack on the embassy are methods and initiatives that do not believe that their members do.

Gathered at the protest spread a banner on which was written “not pass”.

The protest was read and declarations in which according to the accused for burning the U.S. Embassy 21st February “is not passed with such a sharp qualifications for which they are charged for throwing five [Molotov] cocktails at the embassy”. It adds that they “charged with international terrorism is criminal law in Serbia in the same group with genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes against the civilian population, organizing and encouraging to commit genocide” and the like.

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said earlier today the police arrested the suspects for the attack on the building of the Greek Embassy in Belgrade on the basis of evidence and no reason why anyone protest. Regarding the protests on the occasion of the arrest, he told reporters that “everyone has the right to be anything like it or not, or to protest, but no one has the right to cast a ‘[Molotov] cocktails’ at the embassy”.

Dacic the SAJ base in Batajnica said that the police is ready to admit that a mistake if the court proceedings show that is so.

Police arrested two days ago five suspected Molotov cocktail attack on the building of the Embassy of Greece in Belgrade.

Anarhosindikalne activists were arrested initiatives Ratibor Trivunac (28), Tadej Kurepa (24), Ivan Vulovic (24), Sanja Djokic (19), Nikola Mitrovic (29) while also suspect Ivan Savic (25) on the run.

“Investigative judge of the District Court in Belgrade launched the investigation and detention up to 30 days petočlanoj group osumnjičenoj attack on the building of the Embassy of Greece in Belgrade”, said yesterday that court potparolka Ivana Ramic said and added that the suspects detention determined by the existence of risk to stay at large could influence the witnesses.

Why Kostunica Incitement is not processed due to burning of the U.S. Embassy asks the lawyer ASI after the detention of their members for suspected international terrorists

It is absurd that the members of Anarcho-sindikalističke Initiative (ASI) lie in custody on suspicion of committing a crime “international terrorism”, without consequences for the building of the Greek Embassy, while the ignition U.S. embassy, and one death during the protest “Kosovo is Serbia”, the man was suspected of “hard work against general security,” the statement evaluates to fight lawyer Dragoljub Todorovic.

After a night attack Molotov cocktails, burning bottles with gasoline, the Greek Embassy in Belgrade on 25 August, which took over the responsibility is unknown anarchist organization “Black Elijah”, in Belgrade activists were arrested ASI Ratibor Trivunac (28), Tadej Kurepa (24), Ivan Vulovic (24), Sanja Djokic (19) and Nikola Mitrovic (29) , while Ivan Savic (25) on the run.

Unknown anarchist group “Black Elijah” demanded the release of anarchists Todorisa Iliopolusa, arrested in Athens.

“It is interesting that the part called ‘international terrorism’ going consequences, and that the embassy remained whole, the work done at night with the apparent intention of the victims not, and that is still not known witnesses. In the same country, as public prosecutor’s office has not insisted on prosecuting the Prime Minister (Vojislav Koštunica) is huškao the burning of the U.S. Embassy, “explained Todorovic representing Ratibora Trivunca.

Trivunac, who now defend the silence, was detained in custody in order not to influence witnesses of which, says Todorovic, none known.

“It is, therefore, retained in custody in order not to influence potential witnesses, which is more absurd, because one can not affect any possible witnesses,” said Todorovic, which appealed the decision of the investigating judge of the District Court in Belgrade to arrest members of ASI for thirty days, imposed on September 4.

Reminiscence work, Milan Zivanovic, against whom the District Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade 10th April this year filed an indictment because of the suspicion that with more unknown persons involved in burning the American Embassy in Belgrade, after a peaceful protest “Kosovo is Serbia” in downtown 21st February 2008. year, with defending freedom, and the burden he placed a crime “against the hard work of general security” because, along with several unknown persons caused a fire at the U.S. Embassy and brought life in danger. On this occasion, hurt Zoran Vujovic (20) from Novi Sad.

Members and supporters of Anarcho-sindikalističke Initiatives, international association of workers, based in Belgrade, as previously announced, yesterday protested in front of the Faculty of Philosophy in solidarity with the arrested members because they believe that their comrades are not responsible for what is charged.

A little before the announced anarchist protest Listed in police minister Ivica Dacic, said that police arrested the suspects for the attack, “Molotov cocktails” at the Greek embassy building in Belgrade on the basis of evidence and no reason why anyone protest.

Birmingham Santiago Melbourne

Lots of twisting and turning around the world: in Birmingham, in Santiago, and in Melbourne.

In Birmingham, the League of Gentlemen have been busy defending England from Muslim hordes. The Gentlemen deny being racist, or fascist, or right-wing —

[Lady] Leisha Brookes, from the EDL, said: “We are p[r]otesting against Sharia Law and the acceptance by our Government of Islamic extremism. It is unfortunate that it has come to this but we are a [multi] faith group who are just trying to protest against extremism.” She insisted that she did not want to see any violence and that the group were not fascists.

~ Anti-fascists clash with right-wing protesters in Birmingham, Birmingham Post, September 5, 2009

— but others appear to disagree.

From this distance, it seems that the EDL consists largely of what Mick Armstrong (of the Trotskyist group Socialist Alternative) labeled some G20 protesters in Melbourne as being: football hooligans. Further, patriotic football hooligans, pissed-off at what they believe are the presence of too many Islamic mentalists in cities like Birmingham (and Luton and London and Manchester and…).

The League was kick-started in March, in response to the antics of some mentalists at a homecoming parade of British soldiers (Muslim protest at Luton Army parade was ‘upsetting’, says senior officer, Daily Telegraph, March 11, 2009). Later, the same ‘Extremists behind anti-war protest driven off the streets by moderate Muslims’ (Norfolk Unity/Daily Mail, May 29, 2009).

In Santiago, crazy kids have commemorated the election of Salvador Allende in 1973 by throwing stuff:

36 years ago, on September 11 from 1973, a coup coordinated in the US and made in Chile started 17 years of dictatorship. During that time, several people was assassinated because their political beliefs. After 1990, the elected presidents were back… and the [government] alliance has the executive power since then. After almost 20 years of self-called democracy, we have been seeing several people dying too, and most of the social struggles tried to but [shut] down by police and media. After this 20 years we haven’t been able to find social justice, and even the crimes against [C]hilean people during the dictatorship are not been taking seriously by the state.

20 years is just too much time…

In Melbourne, I and over 80,000 others attended a rather poor demonstration of Australian Rules football, conducted by St Kilda, but mostly by Collingwood. Very disappointing, but hopefully not to be repeated next Caturday when (the) Magpies meet (the) Crows.

Collingwood will limp into a sudden-death AFL final against Adelaide next weekend without star onballer Scott Pendlebury and veteran forward Anthony Rocca – both of whom have suffered likely season-ending injuries.

In other bad news, an oil spill off the Kimberley coast. Sea birds, turtles and sea snakes are not happy, but fish are largely unaffected.

All understand the price of progress.

Presumably.

Statement of Anarcho-syndicalist Initiative on arrests of their members

Update : ASI Solid@rity! : “This blog is independent, it is not associated with ASI or any other organisation. This blog collects news reports and other info about the ASI member who were detained recently in Serbia.” In English and Greek.

On September, 4th 2009 District Court in Belgrade decided that arrested members of ASI will be held for thirty days in detention. Our comrades are accused of an act of international terrorism.

Union Confederation “Anarcho-syndicalist Initiative” found out about the attack on Greek embassy, and of the organisation that took the responsibility for this act, through media.

We use this opportunity to remind the public once again that these methods of individual political struggle are not methods of anarcho-syndicalism, quite the contrary – we proclaim our political positions publicly and through our work we seek to bring masses to the syndicalist movement and all the libertarian and progressive organisations.

Wanting to brutally suppress its fierce critics the state, through its mechanism of repression, acts with banal logic and maps as suspects those who explicitly stated their libertarian beliefs, and by their imprisonment ends the case and gives a false picture of its efficiency to the public.

Unscrupulous actions of regime’s organs can be observed from the first moments of arrest, unlawful searches of their apartments, intimidations of their families to extreme charges of international terrorism.

Given the fact that we do not support the acts of now famous anarchist group “Crni Ilija” (Black Iliya) we still cannot characterise what happened as “international terrorism”, because terrorism, by definition, entails threats to the lives of civilians, whereas in this case no one was even hurt and only symbolic material damage was done.

It is clear that this state produced farce is just one way of intimidating anyone who decides to point out the injustice and hopelessness of contemporary society.

In times of general social numbness individuals reach for the most unbelievable, sometimes even self-destructive, actions in order to break through the media blockade and to put their case in the centre of attention – let us remember the workers who cut off and eat their own fingers, or, for example, the unlucky, distressed man who threatened to activate a hand grenade in the building of the Presidency of Serbia – that is, trying to shed some light on their problems in a broader social space.

Let’s not allow them to persuade us that one symbolic act of solidarity, even if expressed in a certainly ill manner, together with any other act of rebellion of those who are left with no rights should be treated as an antisocial act and an act of terrorism.

We express solidarity with the arrested comrades and their families and demand the truth about this case!

FREEDOM FOR ANARCHO-SYNDICALISTS!

Not brotsky or crotsky or drotsky or frotsky. But Trotsky. (And hipsters.)

    Today, I saw a dog,
    Yes, a dog.

    Yes, a pig.
    They were on the pavement,
    Discussing Trotsky.
Not brotsky or crotsky or drotsky or frotsky.
    But Trotsky.

While he retains a largely loyal following around the world, possibly numbering in the hundreds of thousands (if not millions), Leon Trotsky (November 7, 1879–August 21, 1940) has contributed much moar to the world than a brief and ultimately unsatisfactory love object for undergraduate students.

Below I detail several ways in which Лев Давидович Троцький has left his mark on World History.

First and foremost, Trotsky gave unto the World the Spartacists, without whom there would have been no Michael Jackson.

Secondly, according to the Internets, ‘Trotsky Icepick’ was a Los Angeles post-punk band formed by Vitus Mataré and Kjehl Johansen in 1986, following the demise of ‘The Last’ and ‘100 Flowers’. Named for the murder weapon used to kill Mister T, the band’s first (?) release Poison Summer came out under the name ‘Danny and the Doorknobs’. Supposedly, the Doorknobs had performed for several years in nightclubs in the City of Angels, selecting a new moniker to go along with each performance.

Note to young up-and-coming pop *s: this made it extremely difficult for the group to build up any sort of following.

It was at a ‘Club Lingere’ — or possibly ‘The Abattoir’ — show that the quartet was subjected to horrific levels of feedback on stage during a performance. This caused Mataré to quip “THANKS FOR THE TROTSKY ICEPICK, DUDE!” to the errant sound man.

They picked this tag for the second (?) Poison Summer LP.

    (And hipsters.)

A few days ago, I re-posted a short essay by veteran US socialist David McReynolds on ‘The Long Strange Posthumous Life of Leon Trotsky’ [clenched fist salute to Leftist Trainspotters]. This post was, in turn, linked to by Prose Before Hos: ‘A Blog On Economics, Snark, Politics and Policy’.

[For Dion] Death In Moscow

A young man in Moscow on trial for assault, 18-year-old Azerbaijani Rasul Khalilov, has been shot dead, in an apparent revenge attack. The dead man was allegedly a member of a yoof gang called the ‘Black Hawks’.

Use of the words ‘Black’ and ‘Hawks’ — and the dead man’s membership of an ethnic minority — has naturally prompted quality journalists to make comparisons with the 1960s US political party the Black Panthers (for Self Defense).

Oddly, the two groups — separated by a continent and four decades — bear absolutely no similarity to one another whatsoever beyond a label.

In any case, in response to these latest developments, Melbourne historian Dion XXXXXXXX has stated on the Bombshell political philosophy forum that both the Black Hawks and the Black Panthers were “liars”, “hypocrites”, and “no better than the trash they fought against”.

In a further extraordinary outburst — contained in his latest historical monograph ‘Political journalism in post-Communist Russia’, published by the Ponds’ Institute for Historical Studies — XXXXXXXX further alleged that murdered Russian journalists Vadim Kuznetsov, Vaghif Kochetkov, Ilya Zimin, Vyacheslav Akatov, Anton Kretenchuk, Yevgeny Gerasimenko, Vlad Kidanov, Alexander Petrov, Vyacheslav Plotnikov, Anna Politkovskaya, Marina Pisareva, Konstantin Brovko, Ivan Safronov, Ilyas Shurpayev, Gaji Abashilov, Magomed Yevloyev, Abdulla Alishayev, Stanislav Markelov, Anastasia Baburova, Natalia Estemirova and Malik Akhmedilov routinely lied and “took bits and pieces” from others’ accounts as and when they saw fit merely in order to help their misbegotten “cause”. Ultimately, XXXXXXXX argues, their efforts did more harm than good, alienating many otherwise deeply-concerned individuals (such as himself) from good journalism with their “go-nowhere rhetoric and elitist ramblings”.

Finally, as an expression of solidarity with the over 200 journalists murdered in post-Communist Russia, XXXXXXXX has also called upon Melbourne residents to continue to frequent Brunswick Street in order to ostentatiously sip caffèlattes — but only after checking out the fabulous range of quirky designer boutiques ITA. As an added incentive, from the safety of his Brisbane office, fellow Bombshell resident Mark Bastard has promised recalcitrants that he “will beat the fucking shit out of you and then make a black man take a shit in your face” should they ignore Dion’s stirring call to action.

Relative of Azerbaijani killed in Moscow: “Leader of Movement against Illegal Migration Alexander Belov-Potkin ordered Rasul’s murder”
R. Metleboglu
APA
September 4, 2009

Cousin of 18-year-old Azerbaijani Rasul Khalilov, who was killed in Moscow, spoke exclusively to APA’s Moscow correspondent about the details of the incident.

He said Russian citizen Rasul Tahir Khalilov, 18, was killed in front of his house at 11.30 on September 3.

“I was to meet Rasul and were to go to the court. A man waited for him in front of the building. There were two-three men in the car nearby. Rasul was shot in shoulder and tried to flee, but the murderer fired four times and Rasul died,” he said.

Khalilov’s relative says he was killed because of the national enmity and by the order of Alexander Belov-Potkin, leader of Movement against Illegal Migration.

“In may last year Rasul and his friends underwent attack of [boneheads] near Park Pobedy metro station. It was a group connected with the Movement against Illegal Migration. Rasul was a well-bred young man, he had no father, he was the student of International Law Institute under Russian Ministry of Justice,” he said.

Rasul Khalilov’s relative refutes the reports that Rasul was the member of extremist organization “Black Hawks”. He was born, brought up, studied in Moscow.

“80 percent of his friends were of Slavic descent. It is insulting to say that a man like Rasul spread ideas of nationalism, stirred up national enmity. He was killed because of the national enmity. Rasul was killed only because he was Azerbaijani. Unfortunately, this is Russia’s realities,” he said.

The farewell ceremony will be held in a mosque in Otradnoye district of Moscow tomorrow. Rasul Khalilov will be buried in a Muslim cemetery near Mitishi.

…Asked to explain the Sova report’s reference to the ultra-right underground as “an alternative and, to a significant extent, an autonomous milieu, with its own infrastructure (companies, financial and intellectual resources, the possibility of legal support for those suspected of crimes),” Kozhevnikova pointed out that “the nationalists’ own lawyers include, for example, Dmitriy Bakharev and Sergey Belikov. Sergey Shtin, a member of the executive board of the Union of the Russian People, is the head of a Moscow law firm. It is a known fact that Aleksandr Potkin (Belov) (leader of the Movement Against Illegal Immigration or DPNI) has his own business. Vladlen Kralin (Vladimir Tor), leader of the Russian Order group and one of DPNI’s activists, was vice president of NIKoil Bank in 2007 and deputy general director of MosPromStroy Management Company LLC in 2008… Not to mention the fact that there are quite a few wealthy people who are not members of any organization but who are fully prepared to give money to the ultra-right.”…

The three-minute video, titled “Execution of a Tajik and a Dagestani”, begins with two men kneeling before a masked extremist in combat fatigues. Apparently unprompted, they mumble that they have been taken hostage by “Russian Nationalist Socialists”. The masked man then uses a knife to decapitate one of his prisoners in a grim sequence lasting 90 seconds. The second captive is later forced to kneel in front of a grave before he is shot in the back of his head. The clip, which has a caption claiming to have been filmed by “The National Socialist Party of Rus”, ends with a still image of a red and white flag emblazoned with a swastika.

Three members of the ‘Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative’ (ASI) in Belgrade, Serbia — Ratibor Trivunac (IWA-AIT General Secretary), Tadej Kurepa and Ivan Vulovic — were arrested September 3 and charged with “causing general public danger”. It is unconfirmed if other comrades have been arrested.

It is the second time this year that Ratibor has been arrested, having been detained by police in May.

Comrades in Serbia are trying to get in touch with the trio’s lawyers in order to establish the exact charges against them, and their legal status.

Both the ASI and IWA-AIT sites appear to be down at the moment:

Note that on August 25 Molotov cocktails were thrown at the Greek Embassy in Belgrade; a group calling itself ‘Black Ilija’ apparently claimed responsibility (Serbian anarchists claim to have nothing with ‘Black Ilija’, A.Ž. Adžić, Blic Online, August 28, 2009).

Represión en Serbia contra la Secretaría de la AIT-IWA, KAOSENLARED.NET, August 28, 2009:

Dear comrades,

We would like to inform you that Serbian police is trying to frame a case against members of IWA Secretariat, claiming in the media that they are suspecting that Ratibor Trivunac is involved in the incident from two days ago (‘Police suspecting Trivunac for an attack on a Greek embassy in Belgrade’) [snip] when an unknown Anarchist group ‘Crni Ilija’ has thrown two Molotov cocktails at the Greek embassy in Belgrade in solidarity with the imprisoned Greek anarchist Thodoros Iliopoulos, who is on the hunger strike for more than a month. The linked text is just one of many speculating about the case with wild allegations thrown around. We are trying to present our point of view, and get a chance in some media, but there is a pressure building up and we are now waiting for actions of police, which is claiming to be building up evidence. Of course, the whole case is a farce, and we are sure that no reliable evidence that would implicate us can be found. But, we fear that there is a possibility of arrest of some of us, and we want to inform you that we’ll do everything in our power to maintain the IWA – AIT Secretariat safe.

For the time being the cellular telephone number of the Secretariat is still available and usable, and if anything changes in that sense comrades will be informed.

Salud, Anarquia y Colectivismo!

Ratibor Trivunac (on behalf of IWA Secretariat).
