Yesterday evening, Monday the 16th of November, 26 year old anti-fascist Ivan “Vanya Kostolom” Khutorskoy was shot to death at the entrance to his home at Khabarovsk street in the east side of Moscow; according to some information with two shots to his head.

Vanya was a great figure in the Russian anti-fascist movement, and I am sure many people will write down their memories of him in the days, months and years to come. But as of today most of his friends are too angry and too shocked, at the loss of this friend and comrade.

My first memories of Vanya are from around 2004. I was running an anarchist distro at a concert in R-Club. By that time I wasn’t going to gigs too often, so most of the faces were unknown to me. It was before the period when after the murder of [Alexander] Sasha Ryukhin Moscow hardcore went completely underground. Thus the concert was openly announced, and you could not be sure who was around. So I was a bit wary of the skinhead crowd, especially this one big guy. But there was no reason to worry, Vanya being there was actually the best guarantee that any trouble would be handled.

I do not know where Vanya got his nickname “Kostolom”, “Bonecrusher”. Maybe it was some kind of joke, as it is hard to imagine a more friendly and humorous guy than Vanya.

Last time I saw Vanya was at the “No surrender” mixed martial arts tournament, organised on the 10th of October this year in Moscow. The tournament was organised in memory of another murdered anti-fascist, Fyodor Filatov. Vanya was the referee, as seen in the photo above. Vanya was well-trained in Sambo, a martial arts developed in [the] Soviet Union which is still popular in the region. He had some success in tournaments and he achieved the degree of Candidate for Master of Sports of Russia. He also competed in arm-wrestling. This was one of the reasons that made him especially feared and hated among Nazis, since they attempt to picture their enemies as weak alcoholics and junkies. Few Nazis could match up to Vanya in a fair fight, this is why they attacked him with razorblades, screwdrivers and knives, and when even that did not work out, with a gun.

Before that my last meeting with him was outside the Ska-P concert last May. None of my friends had enough money to pay 30 euros for a concert of Spanish ska-punkers, but we decided to give out free anti-fascist papers outside. After all, on the concert poster the group was in anti-fascist t-shirts – not a big thing in Spain, but something for which a musician may have to pay with his life in Moscow. Thus handing stuff outside was not any worse than leafleting random people at the street. Vanya and a number of other people were asked to cover us.

The reaction of semi-yuppie clubbers and punks to our papers was mixed – obviously many were there just to party. Then a phone-call – another group of comrades was in trouble a few kilometers south, followed by a larger mob of Nazis. Our cover had to move to clear things out. I had no plans for a fight that evening, but I had little choice – having distributed anti-fascist papers to hundreds of people, going wandering around afterwards alone could [mean I] easily end up with 5 inches of steel between my ribs. So I had to stick with the crew.

We met with the other mob and regrouped. Vanya warned about not attacking as soon as the Nazis were in sight due to the fact that they would figure out that they were outnumbered and just run away and never get caught. But people could not hold themselves back. 100+ meters was way too much distance to close the gap, the Nazis ran to alleys and jumped over some fences – no one was caught. I was in bad shape so I could not run as fast as the rest – Vanya simply didn’t run because he knew it was pointless. So we were left behind the mob with some girls who avoided being in the front-line, and together we took a look around [to see] if any Nazis had hidden in an alley to our side.

Later that evening, another regroup – some asses kicked, some more missed opportunities. But it would be pointless to tell all these stories – while I was an unusual guest, for Vanya beating up Nazis was as routine as waking up in the morning. To tell one of these stories would be to tell nothing, as there are hundreds of them.

Vanya was a common face in the punk scene since the beginning of the century. Anti-antifa websites have large galleries of him, the oldest photos with a mohawk hairstyle. He was not in the first Moscow Antifa generation which got together around spring of 2002, but when he joined up in 2003-2004 he stayed for good.

Sometimes, after such tragedies, there is a kind of sad body-snatching match going on where everyone wants to claim a dead hero – that was the case for example with Stanislav Markelov, who, while still alive was a prankster who told anarchists that he was a social-democrat, and to Trotskyists and Stalinists that he was an anarchist, just to frustrate everyone.

With Vanya, any such post-mortem claims would be a misrepresentation any way you look at it, as every clique and crew in the scene considered him one of their own, and he was respected and loved by absolutely everyone. Vanya considered himself a RASH skinhead, which did not hold back the apolitical and patriotic Moscow Trojan Skinheads from considering him as one of them. Anarchists of course considered Vanya one of the anarchists, and it is true that Vanya had an anti-authoritarian and social position and was always ready to provide security for anarchists events. But he did not live for activism – he lived for the streets and for punk rock.

He was as sharp as a razorblade, and he finished his juridical studies at the Russian State Social University with a “red diploma”, that is a diploma “with excellence” given to students in the region of the former Soviet Union who have almost exclusively the best possible grades. As there are few people with juridical studies in the scene, I had some hopes that Vanya would join the ranks of the activist lawyers when he would retire from street fighting one day – even before he was murdered, Stas Markelov was overwhelmed with legal cases from our movement and had trouble in dealing with them alone. Vanya and Stas knew each other well, and Vanya also provided security to some press-conferences held by Stas. Most recently Vanya worked as a lawyer in the Deti ulitsy center (“Children of the street”), which works with street children and other children with difficulties.

Of course people now ask why he went to his flat that evening, although his address was posted all around in the Nazi websites. Vanya often stayed in other places. Maybe he had some important business with his family, maybe he just spit in the face of death, having survived so many attempts on his life.

Vanya was jumped the first time in 2005 and his head was cut with a razorblade. This incident was recorded with a CCTV camera and used in a TV documentary of NTV channel, which is available online here.

Next time, in the autumn of the same year, they attempted kill him – his neck was punctured 6 times with a sharpened screwdriver, which is a popular weapon among Russian Nazis as it punctures deeper than a knife. Any of these strikes could have been lethal, but miraculously none of them hit arteries and he survived. This incident was also recorded to a CCTV camera, but cops had little interest in investigating and they didn’t even check the recording! It took more than half a year for Vanya to fully recover from this attack.

In January of this year, Vanya was stabbed in his stomach during a street fight, this wound was almost lethal as well but he survived. And now, when everything else failed, Nazis decided to use guns – they finally succeeded.

Some bloke called John Bursill done a tour of Australia recently presenting the Hard Evidence that 9/11 was a conspiracy — last night he sprach at the New Council Chambers @ Trades Hall. According to a comrade who attended, the crowd was large, numbering several hundred, with most being middle-aged or older (which segment was described as being of a similar ilk to that which supported One Nation) while a smaller segment was younger (mostly blokes in their twenties).

Ken Jenkins elaborates on some FAQs inre 9/11 here. In summary, the position of the Hard Evidence mob is that “All we know for certain is that the official story cannot be true. So: Governments lie; the US Government lied about ‘what really happened’ on September 11, 2001; the troof must be exposed. Facebook rep lies to Brisbane Times about removing hate groups

The Brisbane Times quotes a Facebook rep as saying hate groups will be removed if reported.

We call bullshit.

‘Fuck Off We’re Full‘ (FOWF) has been reported to Facebook as a ToS violator over and over and over. Former FOWF admin Terrie-Anne Verney even got the sack from her job at community radio station 2MIA for the vilifiying tripe she posted in the group. FOWF founder/admin & xenophobic bigot Darrin Hodges and his mates post commentary such as this:

Groups rile against ‘Hatebook’

Social networking site Facebook has come under pressure to better regulate its content as racist and offensive groups continue to proliferate on the site.

Facebook has a ban on “content that is hateful [and] threatening” and a spokeswoman for the site told brisbanetimes.com.au that there was no place for racism “or any form of hate speech” on Facebook.

“We will remove anything of this nature that is reported to us,” she said.

“Facebook is highly self-regulating, and users can and do report content that they find questionable or offensive.”

But despite Facebook’s self-regulation, many offensive groups remain on the network.

Some vilify Indigenous Australians and Muslims, others suggest glassing people is acceptable, and some deny the Holocaust.

One anti-Islamic group alone has over 6000 members and many groups remain on Facebook long enough for opposition groups to be created in response.

Race Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes told brisbanetimes.com.au that cyber-racism was an issue that needed to be addressed.

“I don’t think we’re a racist country, but Australia does have pockets of racism, and all of us need to challenge these pockets,” he said.

Representatives from Islamic and Jewish peak representative organisations have also called for tighter regulation of online content.

Islamic High Council of Australia spokesman Mohammed Mehio said Facebook needed to meet its responsibilities of ensuring vilification did not take place on their network.

“If every time someone turns on Facebook they’re insulted, they’ll go somewhere else,” he said.

“It would be sad if Facebook knew about such content and kept it there.”

Executive Council of Australian Jewry executive director Peter Wertheim said offensive and racist content should not be available to view on the internet.

“Where the technical means exist, Australian ISPs should take measures to block such content,” he said.

Mr Wertheim said internet service providers had a “moral obligation” to block racially vilifying content.

“ISPs need to respect Federal Court decisions,” he said.

But Electronic Frontiers Australia spokesman Geordie Guy said groups should have the right to express their views, no matter how abhorrent or controversial they might be.

“The ability to say what you want is a critical and important part of democracy and freedom,” he said.

Mr Guy said that the open discussion of illegal activities, like abortion and euthanasia was “critical for a healthy democracy”.

“The way that we change things is by talking about them. If we’re not allowed to talk about illegal things, how are we going to change anything?” he said.

“Free speech is a complicated area.”

Offensive pages and groups that achieve a high profile are usually quickly removed from Facebook.

A page supporting two footballers accused of rape, and the pro-rape “Define Statutory” group were recently removed after Fairfax Media reported their existence.

Previous decisions by the Federal Court of Australia have required Australian sources to remove Holocaust-denying material from the internet.

In February 2007 the Federal Court ordered the Bible Believers Church to remove content from issue 242 of its newsletter which suggested that the Holocaust did not occur.

In another case in 2002, the Federal Court ordered the Adelaide Institute to remove similar material from its website.

In both cases the publication of the offending material denying was considered a violation of the Racial Discrimination Act of 1975.

Brendon O’Connell ~versus~ ZOG (w/- BONUS! Freddo Frog)

    Update : According to his supporters, O’Connell appears to have been arrested once again (“At 17:00 hours on Monday, 16th November 2009”) and faces further charges in connection with his case, the next scheduled hearing for which is this Friday. Jim Kerr — who has temporarily assumed control of O’Connell’s blog — writes: “Brendon O’Connell needs your support more than ever, and I call upon all genuine anti-Zionists and White Nationalists to join the fight. We must set aside any ideological, political and personal differences, and direct our focus exclusively upon our common enemy – racist, homicidal, maniac Jews and the stooges who serve their agenda.” Jim Perren and the ‘Australia First Party’ have rallied to the cause…

Googling “Brendon O’Connell” brings up various things, but first cab off the rank is this post: “Brendon O’Connell : Tool of the Week.” (May 19, 2009). For those of you coming in late, O’Connell is currently on trial in Perth, accused of racial vilification following an incident on May 2 of this year. Thus:

(1) On 2 May 2009 at South Perth Brendon Lee O’Connell, with intent to create or promote animosity towards Stanley Elliot Keyser as a member of a racial group engaged in conduct, otherwise than in private, namely pursuing Stanley Elliot Keyser and making a series of statements to Stanley Elliot Keyser.

(2) On 2 May 2009 at Perth Brendon Lee O’Connell, with intent to create or promote animosity towards a racial group engaged in conduct, otherwise than in private, namely recording himself making a series of statements concerning the Jewish people.

That was six months ago, and O’Connell’s trial has now commenced.

His case is interesting for a number of reasons, not least of which is the fact that this is — to my knowledge — only the second time that the relevant provisions of the Criminal Code Amendment (Racial Vilification) Bill 2004 have been put into use by the state (see: Racial vilification in WA, September 15, 2006).

O’Connell has a blog — http://brendonoconnell.blogspot.com/ — in which he continues to educate the local Police and Judiciary of his fair city as to the Truth of the kult of judah et ecetera. One of O’Connell’s most vocal online supporters is Australia First Party member Jim Perren, whose blog, ‘Whitelaw Towers’, also educates the local White population of his fair city (of Toowoomba) as to the Truth of the kult of judah (et ecetera), and also why following a man of Lebanese descent is the White thing to do.

The iPhone’s first worm is spreading, but it only affects certain jailbroken iPhones.

The first worm written for Apple’s iPhone has been unleashed and is infecting phones in Australia. However, the worm, known as Ikee, is only a threat to users who have jaibroken their phones to let them run unauthorized software, security experts say…

The worm was written Wednesday [November 4] by Ashley Towns, a 21 year-old unemployed programmer from [Wollongong], Australia. He hadn’t heard of the Dutch incident when he released his worm, he said Sunday in an instant-message interview. “It was supposed to be a small prank i definitely wasn’t expecting it to get as far as it did,” he said.

Towns wanted to make the point that people should change their default iPhone passwords, especially if they’re using SSH. “A lot of people especially at first thanked me,” he said. “I think most people are relieved its not out to destroy their phone. I have had a few people abuse me though.”

He didn’t really consider the possible legal ramifications of releasing the code, something he said was “quite naive of me,” Towns said.

Once the worm adds the Rick Astley wallpaper, it disables the iPhone’s SSH daemon and then looks around … on the Internet for other vulnerable iPhones to infect.

Tricking victims into playing a video or looking at a picture of Rick Astley — best known for his hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” — is a popular Internet prank called Rickrolling.

It’s not clear how many people have been affected by the worm, but Towns said that his phone alone infected about 100 other devices…

The story has since spread like um, some kinda virus, finding its way to the ABC (Australian admits creating first iPhone virus, Brigid Andersen, November 9, 2009), the BBC (Worm attack bites at Apple iPhone, November 9, 2009), Xinhua (“Jail-broken” i-Phones at risk from worms, November 9, 2009), AFP (iPhone fear as ‘Rick Astley’ worm spreads, Talek Harris, November 9, 2009), FOXNews (Rick Astley Virus Infecting iPhone, November 10, 2009), The Sydney Morning Herald (Mixed response to Astley iPhone virus, Louisa Hearn, November 10, 2009) and elsewhere.

Point being: Towns’ monkey business and propulsion into the orbit of the corporate/state media has irked some, and one fellow Aussie in particular: Andrew Sanders (aka Andrew Kellerman of the ‘Digital Liberty Coalition’). Sanders had his own brush with fame in December 2005, when he established a website titled ‘Fightback’, which was intended to rally the White troops for a second assault upon the non-White beach-goers of Cronulla. (On a spotterly note, the site was subsequently captured by the mighty follower(s) of Trotskyist Ted Grant [1913–2006].)

Sanders himself is a Renaissance man: artiste (‘Val Debauchee’: “an internationally acclaimed artist whose works have been hung around the globe” — see: Picture of extremes, Joe Hildebrand, The Daily Telegraph, April 10, 2006); l33t hacker (self-described ‘Founder of the first public Australian cyberculture group, WKBBS, 1993’ at the age of 13); law-talking guy (aka ‘The Law Society of The University of Western Sydney’ — http://www.lawsociety.org.au); photographer; religionist (an ordained Minister with the ‘Universal Life Church’); Tunnel Rat; White supremacist (‘blue8eyed8devil’ on Stormfront) and — no doubt — much more besides.

Pathological Lying: Symptom or Disease?

Pathological lying (PL) is a controversial topic. There is, as yet, no consensus in the psychiatric community on its definition, although there is general agreement on its core elements. PL is characterized by a long history (maybe lifelong) of frequent and repeated lying for which no apparent psychological motive or external benefit can be discerned. While ordinary lies are goal-directed and are told to obtain external benefit or to avoid punishment, pathological lies often appear purposeless. In some cases, they might be self-incriminating or damaging, which makes the behavior even more incomprehensible. Despite its relative obscurity, PL has been recognized and written about in the psychiatric literature for more than a century. The German physician, Anton Delbruck, is credited with being the first to describe the concept of PL. He observed that some of his patients told lies that were so abnormal and out of proportion that they deserved a special category. He subsequently described the lies as “pseudologia phantastica”…

Working with ICE and DHS are totally contrary to ARA’s points of unity (we do not rely on the cops or the courts) and also completely inconsistent with our two major current campaigns (defending migrant rights, opposing police abuse and political repression). However, when I tried to post a comment to that effect on the indymedia UK site, my browser alerted me that it was not a secure connection or a trustworthy, verifiable site, so I did not proceed further. In the UK, the Anarchist Federation has issued a statement regarding the apparent fact that ‘Unite Against Fascism (UAF) stewards collaborate with police on anti-EDL mobilisation’ (November 13, 2009):

The Anarchist Federation condemns the group Unite Against Fascism (UAF) who, on Saturday 31st October at a mobilisation against the English Defence League (EDL) in Leeds city centre, openly handed one of our members over to the police. Several UAF stewards, including the head of UAF Leeds, physically prevented our member from rejoining the cordon, and then called the police over to arrest him. We will not tolerate collaboration with the state to halt the activity of genuine anti-fascists and ask other progressive organisations to do the same. UAF’s policy of negotiating with the state for its public protests is well known, as is its alliance with religious leaders, trade union bureaucrats and politicians. UAF, apart from being nothing more than a front group for the Socialist Workers Party, has never been an effective means to combat the rise of fascism in Britain nor does it offer anything to working class communities.

The Scottish version of the EDL held a demo in Glasgow on Saturday (November 14) and a brief report is available on Indymedia Scotland. According to this account, UAF failed to confront the EDL, but on the bright side the SWP presumably managed to sell some papers.

Rather moar oddly, a statement is circulating claiming to having been made on behalf of ‘ARA’ — ‘Anti-Racist Action’ — appealing to readers to:

…call their elected representatives, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security with any information they may have about a racist criminal alien who plans to travel to the United States this month.

Arthur Benjamin Kemp, a leader in the fascist British National Party, is reportedly attempting to gain US citizenship after arranging a sham marriage with a fellow neo-Nazi and Stormfront poster, Jeannine Delp Gerace, of Mount Joy, PA.

The statement has been posted on UK Indymedia by ‘Antifa’, which suggest it has been issued by ‘Antifa England’ — which is not the case.

Obviously, a call to take action of this sort can be judged on its merits, but to attribute it to ‘Antifa’ or ‘ARA’ seems to me to be very confusing — if not misleading. On Kemp himself, see : nutzis are W E I R D : Arthur Kemp / BNP (August 30, 2009).

    Kinda sorta speaking… actually, New Yawk, like New Jersey, proved to be a bit of a fizzer: “At approx. 5:00PM, 25 NYC Antifascist activist[s] entered the hotel and disrupted the Holocaust denier and Hitler apologist’s attempt to have a Nazi gathering in NYC. A prominent Neo-Nazi attorney named Alex Carmichael, whom we have dealt with before and saw at last night’s shindig in New Jersey, was maced in the face. Hotel personnel [were] duped into hosting the event by Irving’s organizers who kept the location under wraps until the last minute.”

Friday the 13th doesn’t always mean Jason is going to come out and slash you up. If you’re Holocaust denier and Hitler apologist David Irving (that’s starting to be his name around here) that might have been preferable to his New Jersey experience that day. Jersey doesn’t like Nazis, and will do something about them when given the chance. That is probably why this was the first stop on his East Coast tour that Irving saw opposition. He held his speaking engagement at a Best Western in Pompton Plains, NJ, and antifa, who were told that another venue canceled him but went to check it out just to be sure, found out the true location. If that wasn’t bad enough, hackers zeroed in on his websites, giving antifa everywhere an early Holiday treat – information on all of his supporters. Today he is supposed to be in New York City, but he has to find another place there too. The original spot closed [its] doors to him once they learned who was coming his way. Antifa did good – damn good this evening, and even if you can’t find what venue Irving duped into hosting him, you can most certainly now find a lot of the folks down with him. Works for us! David has his spin going on this one, saying, “We are puzzled that they (antifa) are so frightened by historical debate.” Well, we are puzzled about you being puzzled, Dave. Debate can only be had when you have those you are debating in the same room with you, which you tried so hard to avoid and always do. This time it was in vain, and now a lot of you-know-what is going to hit the fan. See what happens when black (clad) cats cross your path on Friday the 13th, Dave?

The Psychopathic God: Adolf Hitler

The question of Hitler’s sexual perversion is a matter of concern to those interested in his personality. It is also a matter of considerable dispute. Many responsible observers who knew him well are emphatic that there was no perversion: later historians are not at all persuaded either of its existence or its importance.

The first published statement that Hitler may have had a perversion was made in an article appearing in 1971 and drawing on a valuable psychological investigation of Hitler prepared for the OSS in 1943 by Dr. Walter C. Langer and other American psychoanalysts and clinical psychologists. This wartime report, subsequently published in 1972, reached the following conclusion with regard to Hitler’s aberrant sexual activity:

It is an extreme form of masochism in which the individual derives sexual gratification from the act of having a woman urinate or defecate on him.

Historians were not slow in responding. The Regius Professor of History at Oxford University, for example, found the discussion of Hitler’s perversion outrageous, irrelevant, and totally unsubstantiated. He concluded roundly and with conspicuous confidence, “There is not a shred of evidence on any of these matters”.

It is important to emphasize that a historian dealing with an emotionally disturbed subject is obliged to use two quite different types of evidence. There is, of course, the familiar kind of testimony which is often thought of as being “solid”, objective, rational, or factual. This sort of historical fact is important and should be evaluated very carefully. But another category of evidence, psychological data, may prove equally valuable when handled with discernment. Historians who feel professionally ill equipped to interpret such data may find it advisable to consult professional psychologists.

With regard to Hitler’s alleged sexual perversion, the traditional kind of direct evidence is not entirely convincing. It comes largely from a former intimate of Hitler’s, Otto Strasser, who told OSS officials during an interview in Montreal on 13 May 1943 that he had learned about Hitler’s perversion from Geli Raubal herself. He said that “after much urging” concerning the nature of her relationship with her famous uncle, she said:

Hitler made her undress … He would lie down on the floor. Then she would have to squat over his face where he could examine her at close range and this made him very excited. When the excitement reached its peak, he demanded that she urinate on him and that gave him his sexual pleasure. Geli said the whole performance was extremely disgusting to her and … it gave her no gratification.

One might well raise questions about the reliability of Otto Strasser’s testimony on anything. In particular, one might well wonder whether Geli would be likely to confide in him over such intimate matters. Langer and his associates, however, reported that other informants–whose names are not mentioned–gave similar testimony about Hitler’s perversion.

Long before Dr. Langer and his colleagues drew up their report, a Catholic priest provided evidence which tends to support their findings. This priest, Father Bernhard Stempfle, had befriended Hitler and helped edit Mein Kampf for publication. He asserted that in 1929 Hitler had written Geli a shockingly compromising letter which explicitly mentioned his masochistic and coprophilic inclinations. Geli no doubt would have been repelled by the letter, but she never received it. It fell into the hands of Hitler’s landlady’s son, a man named Rudolph. Hitler was saved from embarrassment–and conceivably from political disaster–by a remarkable person, a gnomelike eccentric named J. F. M. Rehse. For years this indefatigable little man, who was a close friend and confidant of Father Stempfle, had collected political memorabilia. His rooms were packed to the ceiling with cartons containing copies of official decrees, pictures, political advertisements, and thousands of newspaper clippings. One day Hitler sent the Party treasurer, Franz X. Schwarz, to Rehse and asked him to buy Hitler’s incriminating letter from Rudolph with the excuse that he needed [it] for his collection. But Rehse, on the advice of Father Stempfle, saw an opportunity to profit from Hitler’s embarrassment. He demanded that the Nazi leader assume financial responsibility for his beloved collection. Hitler yielded to this extortion and found the money to underwrite the Rehse collection, which still may be found in the archives of the Nazi Party, now largely on microfilm in the Hoover Institution and in the National Archives.

At any rate, the compromising letter–which probably never went through Rehse’s hands at all–was delivered by Father Stempfle to Schwarz, who gave it to Hitler. It may well be that this service to Hitler helped make Schwarz one of the more influential though publicly obscure figures within the Nazi Party. Hitler further testified to his confidence in Schwarz when he made him the sole executor of his personal will of 2 May 1938.

There is another bit of evidence that would seem to support Father Stempfle’s story of Hitler’s perversion. In June 1934, during the so-called Blood Purge, when Hitler settled his accounts with people who were in a position to embarrass him politically, Father Stempfle was found dead in the forest of Herlaching near Munich, with three shots through his heart.

VICTIMS of Maitland-Newcastle pedophile priest John Denham took the first steps this week in what could be Australia’s biggest compensation payout by the Catholic Church to child sex abuse victims.

    Denham is scheduled to be sentenced in December 2009 after pleading guilty to sexually abusing dozens of boys in the 1970s and 1980s.

Some victims have sought a meeting with Maitland-Newcastle Bishop Michael Malone, one month before Denham is sentenced for child sex offences from 1968 to 1986.

The Denham case could produce a total payout greater than the previous known highest Australian payout of $6 million, paid to nine victims of Maitland-Newcastle pedophile priest Vince Ryan

But it is extremely unlikely to top the known highest individual Australian payout of $2 million, paid by Maitland-Newcastle diocese to a Ryan victim because of the catastrophic impact of the priest’s offending.

Solicitors said this week the Denham matter could be Australia’s biggest compensation case because there were 39 victims, and because of the successful prosecution of former Vicar-General Tom Brennan in March.

Brennan was convicted of knowingly making a false knowingly making a false written statement.

Newcastle solicitor Kate Maher, of Braye Cragg, who acted for a number of the Ryan victims, said evidence that Brennan didn’t act after he was repeatedly told of Denham’s offending was similar to the failed duty of care issue raised in the Ryan case.

Evidence that the late Monsignor Patrick Cotter knew of Ryan’s sexual abuse and “decided to say nothing” was significant because of the breach of Cotter’s duty of care to the children, she said.

Brennan’s conviction is believed to be the first successful Australian prosecution of a priest linked to failing to act over another priest’s offending, Ms Maher said.

But the impact of another church sexual abuse case that went to the High Court in 2007 remained a “significant hurdle”, some solicitors and barristers contacted by The Herald this week said.

Solicitor and sexual abuse victim John Ellis lost his case against the Archdiocese of Sydney, and was ordered to pay the church’s $750,000 legal bill, after the High Court refused an appeal to challenge the church case that there was no one to sue because of its internal structure..

AN EXTREME right-wing group sparked anti-fascist protests after it was revealed it had been holding meetings in a Humanist Society hall in inner Sydney.

The Public Information Forum – also known as Klub Nation or Klub Naziya – was prevented from meeting on November 6 after about 50 protesters gathered at the Shepherd Street address in Chippendale.

Police were called to an earlier demonstration in October when protesters yelling “Nazis out” attempted to disrupt the meeting by banging on doors and windows.

“If they get the message that they are not welcome in Chippendale and move somewhere else we will follow them,” an online post from one protester read.

The group was banned from using the hall by the Humanist Society once before because of alleged racist associations.

David Duffy, the Humanist Society member responsible for bookings at the hall, said the group of about 30 young men had been meeting peacefully there for about eight years. He conceded the group was “right of centre” but said he did not believe it was a neo-Nazi group.

“The sort of people who attend [Mr Rafty’s] meetings would be considered conspiracy theorists to a certain extent,” he said.

“They run a series of discussion groups on political and geopolitical themes. It’s invitation-only. It’s not a thing where they advertise publicly. They don’t do any interface with the community in any way.”

An anonymous letterbox drop of the area calling on residents to “do something about” Australia’s high level of immigration coincided with last week’s protest.

Darrin Hodges from the Australian Protectionist Party said his group stopped using the hall after hearing meetings there were “getting out of hand and rowdy”.

Mr Hodges denied any knowledge of the leaflet drop in the area, but said: “[It] sounds like there’s some funny things going on around town.”

Humanist Society president John August said it had planned a review of its hall hiring policy, but would allow the group to continue meeting at the hall until a decision was made.

“I do not wish to defend any right-wing groups, but equally there is an issue of free speech and free expression,” he said. “How you reconcile those two goals is a complicated issue.”

Mr August said he was disappointed some of the protesters were prepared to resort to violence.

“I have been involved with discussions with Redfern police over this. They are very concerned. We are as much the victims in this situation as anyone,” Mr August said.

In April 1972, sixteen sticks of gelignite exploded in the Communist Party’s Brisbane office, lifting the floor of the building almost six centimetres off the ground. Later the same evening, three rifle shots ricocheted through the Maoist East Wind bookshop…

The next month, the terror campaign returned to Melbourne with an attempt to set the Third World bookshop alight. A week later, the East Wind bookshop in Little Londsdale Street received a fire-bomb through the front door, while Molotov cocktails hit the Radical Action Movement’s headquarters in Palmerston Street, Carlton, the China Friendship Society, and the Source bookshop in Collins Street…

Many naturally suspected the NSPA of involvement in the bookshop attacks, since the Nazis had previously clashed with the Left. In January 1971, the NSPA announced a fascist rally to be held on Melbourne’s Yarra Bank. The Left and the Jewish community organised a counter-rally. When the Nazis did not appear, thousands streamed up to their headquarters in North Carlton. The party’s leader Cass Young later complained:

“All this time we could hear a noise such as that at a football ground, getting louder. Looking outside, I saw that a huge crowd was coming down the street towards our headquarters.

Within minutes there were several thousand people, mostly reds and those of the chosen race, milling around outside. We closed all the doors and windows and I posted sentries at the back and on the roof. We hoisted the mighty flag of our race — the swastika — and the Eureka flag at the top front window. The crowd outside began throwing anything it could get its hands on: eggs, tomatoes, rocks and tins. Soon all the windows had been smashed by flying missiles.”

In June 1972, the NSPA tried to hold its annual conference. The fascists kept the location secret. Protesters instead marched to a triple-fronted brick veneer in St. Albans, which served both as Young’s house and the new [neo-]Nazi HQ. To resounding chants of ‘Death to the Nazis’, they tore the building apart. Surveying the wreckage of his property, Young lost some of his enthusiasm for overt displays of Nazism, and the NSPA collapsed in a bout of internecine warfare, a process nicely captured in the title of David Harcourt’s study of Australian Nazism: Everyone Wants to Be Fuehrer. ~ Jeff Sparrow and Jill Sparrow, Radical Melbourne 2 : The Enemy Within, The Vulgar Press, 2004, pp.148–150.
