In three weeks, on July 19, 2008, a gig is scheduled to take place at the East Brunswick Hotel (280 Lygon Street, East Brunswick). The headline act is Sham 69, with support from Bastard Squad, Sin City and T.H.U.G.. The tour is being organised by Faultline Records & Touring, a Melbourne-based heavy metal label, established in 1998 by DW Norton, current CEO and former member of nu metal outfit Superheist.*

Unlike Superheist (1993–2004), T.H.U.G. is a relatively-new, Sydney-based oi! band. Importantly, two of its members — Chumley, vocals, and Simon, drums — last graced the world’s stage as members of White Lightning (c.1986–1988), an Australian neo-Nazi band. White Lightning released one album, We Rule, the title track of which T.H.U.G. still performs. The opening track is ‘Australian Youth’: “Make a stand for your great nation / Against the scum who are going to die”.

The album was subsequently re-recorded and released as ‘Destiny’ on French RAC label Rebelles Européens (1987–1994) in 1990 (RE332190). Although apparently collapsing in 1994, in 1995 Rebelles Européens made a short-lived recovery assisted by an Australian label, White League. White League released a handful of CD recordings before it too dissolved. In addition, another former member of White Lightning, ‘Aussie’ Nigel Brown (No Remorse, Celtic Warrior, Raven’s Wing, Wolfseye), together with a wanker called Billy, re-recorded and re-released We Rule on Welsh label ‘Independent Voice Records’ in 1998.

T.H.U.G. is thus one of a tiny clutch of bands with roots in the neo-Nazi rock ‘n’ roll of the ’80s and ’90s; another is the UK band Tattooed Mother Fuckers (TMF), whose vocalist is Steve “Jonesy” Jones, formerly of neo-Nazi band English Rose. Numerous other ‘patriotic’ bands attempt to hide their reactionary politics behind the flag: Ross of UK oi! band Scum, for example, has recently been outed as a Hitler fetishist by Benson & Hedges. Scum is, in turn, playing a gig with TMF in October, while Australian band The Corps is touring Europe with TMF and Retaliator. Retaliator, TMF, The Corps and Scum are all available through local mail-order Deadset Music (whose proprietor was a patron at the 2006 Ian Stuart Donaldson (ISD) memorial gig). Rock-O-Rama, the German neo-Nazi label, has re-located to Belgium, and re-invented itself as Pure Impact, selling both neo-Nazi and more straightforwardly ‘conservative’ and/or ‘apolitical’ titles.

Locally, Benson & Hedges have announced the impending disaster that will be the ISD memorial gig (2007 | 2006), *ing Douglas Schott’s Viking warriors from Newcastle Blood Red Eagle, a resurrected Ravenous (not to be confused with the Kiwi metalheads), and some schmucks from one of them foreign countries. BRE is available for purchase through local ‘punk’ mailorder Snapshot, along with Skrewdriver, Bound For Glory (UK not US), Fortress (AUS), Legion of St. George (UK), Retaliator (UK) and the incomparable Southern Storm (”Niggers, Jews and Communists / Look out scum, you’re on our list!”). Snapshot is also closely associated with ‘Class War’ in Sydney… which is odd.

Old whine in new bottles has as its concomitant the disembraining and yuppification of underground DIY punk (sub-)culture. In Perth, The Homicides have gladly shared a stage with Murray Holmes (ex-Quick & The Dead, Skrewdriver). Holmes had previously traveled to Melbourne (last year) to perform at the Melbourne Croatia Social Club with a handful of other neo-Nazi bands. The Homicides are planning a split release later this year with T.H.U.G..

As for T.H.U.G., in 2000, Simon was interviewed by a Dutch neo-Nazi zine Out of Order. Simon says:

All my mates were into oi! and white pride as well. I did not know any skinheads that were into oi! and were not white and proud of it. Lefty skinheads would never dare to show their face on the street for fear of getting severely beaten. And that’s the way it should always be…

Nazis against anti-Semitism? As bizarre as that sounds, a group of Germans which calls itself “National Socialists For Israel” launched its Web site in support of Israel.

“Stop the hatred of the Jewish people,” the Web site reads. “The Jews are a healthy, strong nation.”

The organization – whose members have yet to reveal themselves to the public – claims that Israel’s right to exist is anchored in the principles of social Darwinism, the same principles which the Nazis adopted prior to the Second World War.

“Israel earned the right to live among the nations [after emerging] from unending wars,” the group writes on the site. “Israel also has a right to exist. This nation also has culture… The nation of Israel is appreciated… It is our duty, as neo-Nazis, to defend this supreme success. Not just for the German people and the European cultural sphere, but also, especially, for Israel.”

As such, “Nazis for Israel” also leveled criticism at their colleagues in the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD), calling them “politicos, cowards, and reactionaries.”

“Show us proof of a Jewish plot to dominate the world,” they wrote in a rare manifesto which was posted on their Web site.

These unusual statements on the internet [complement] the group’s other public campaigns, including the dissemination of bumper stickers. One of the stickers features a picture of Reinhard Heydrich, the senior Nazi official who chaired the Wansee Conference where the Final Solution was hatched. Underneath the photo reads: “As a Nazi, I’m a Zionist.”

Another sticker shows a photo of Israel Defense Forces soldiers during the Second Lebanon War under the heading: “2,000 years of struggling to survive – respect to those worthy of it.”

In terms of the group’s attitude towards the Holocaust, the organization says: “We must view what is referred to as ‘the Holocaust’ within the context of acts of self-defense undertaken by nations under threat.” It added, however, “that there is no justification for it.” Instead, the Nazis ought to have supported the Zionist cause, the group states.

The group claims it held its first meeting of activists in Berlin last month. It said the meeting touched on issues ranging from “solidarity with Israel, anti-Semitism, capitalism, and Islam.”

Actually, ‘national socialism’ is hardly incompatible with Zionism, or Zionism with national socialism; what makes this mob’s ‘support’ for the state of Israel peculiar is German history and the history of German national socialism/Nazism in particular.

Murder accused Shannon Brent Flewellen was handcuffed and escorted by three police officers when he appeared in Westport District Court today. The 28-year-old Nelson fisherman and a co-offender are accused of murdering Korean backpacker Jae Hyeon Kim in 2003. Flewellen was remanded without plea to appear in Westport District Court on July 24 by Judge Noel Walsh. Duty solicitor Doug Taffs said that it was too problematic at this stage to set depositions and pre-depositions dates. There was no application for bail. Judge Walsh confirmed his remand in custody. Six bonehead supporters left the court when Flewellen was escorted away…

Flewellen has had previous brushes with the law, escaping from a police van in January 2005 before being re-captured.

Two indicted in ’98 homeless slayings in Tampa

TAMPA — Federal authorities have charged two more members of a hate group with the 1998 beating deaths of two homeless men in Tampa, according to a grand jury indictment unsealed Tuesday. James Robertson, 28, and Corey Hulse, 24, formerly of Tampa, have each been charged with two counts of a violent crime in aid of racketeering to commit murder. If convicted, they face life in prison. Robertson has been detained on the charges, and Hulse remains a fugitive, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors described Robertson and Hulse as members of the white racist organization Tampa Blood and Honour, a bonehead group “whose members espoused the belief that white persons of Aryan descent were the superior race.” Robertson and Hulse are accused of helping at least two other men murder Alfred Williams and Richard Arseneau on Sept. 31, 1998. Kenneth Hoover, 35, and Charles Marovskis, 29, two other members of the group, have pleaded guilty in the slayings. Authorities said the men beat Williams to death with a tire iron and used an ax to kill Arseneau in a wooded lot. Prosecutors said the killings took place as part of an initiation rite.

Blood & Honour is a proscribed organisation in Germany and Spain and exists under a legal cloud in Belgium, Holland and Portugal, but operates quite happily in Australia.

Martyn Gilleard : RAHOWA!

31-year-old British neo-Nazi Martyn Gilleard has been found guilty of two counts of ‘terrorism’-related offences after having pleaded guilty to ten charges relating to the possession of child pornography. According to the BBC (Neo-Nazi had child abuse images, Jon Kelly, June 24, 2008):

Gilleard, a forklift truck driver from Goole, East Yorkshire, admitted to police and the court that he had held racist views. At the time of his arrest he was a paid-up member of the National Front, the White Nationalist Party and the British People’s Party – all opposed to multiculturalism. His computer password was Martyn1488 – the 14, according to prosecutor Andrew Edis QC, being a reference to the far-right’s “14 words” slogan, “We must secure the existence of our race and the future for white children.” The 88, Mr Edis added, represented the eighth letter of the alphabet – an abbreviation for “Heil Hitler”.

That Gilleard was a member of the NF and the BPP is known — in fact, the BPP celebrated Gilleard as being some kind of ‘hero’. I’m not aware of his membership of the ‘White Nationalist Party’, nor even of its existence (but exist, the WNP — nee Aryan Unity — apparently did, albeit very briefly); the BPP itself claims to have expelled Gilleard on June 16, 2008, after it was reported that he had pleaded guilty to child pornography charges. The 14 words are also well-known, having been coined by David Lane (1938–2007), a US white supremacist. Lane died in prison while serving a 190-year-long sentence for various offences against the law, common sense, and basic human decency. Gilleard also appears to have been a heap ’em big fan of Blood & Honour, whose Australian franchise — along with the local franchise of the Hammerskins, another international bonehead network — are organising gigs in Adelaide in July and Melbourne in September.

Interestingly, “Andrew Edis, QC, prosecuting, said the defendant had copied long sections of the Anarchist’s Cookbook [sic] from the internet. This work includes sections on letter bombs, an explosive pen, pipe hand grenades, light-bulb bombs, carbon dioxide bombs and obtaining acid from aspirin.”

The Anarchist Cookbook — a document originally produced in the late 1960s/early 1970s, and widely considered as being a production of the US Gub’mint in anarchist circles ever since — is the gift that just keeps on giving.

    Martyn Gilleard was found guilty of:

    * one count under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006: Preparing terrorist acts with intent to carry them out, and
    * one count under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000: possession of material which would be of practical use to someone preparing an act of terrorism,
    * he pleaded guilty at the start of this trial to 10 counts of possession of indecent images of children, and
    * pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to possessing 34 cartridges of ammunition without holding a firearms certificate.

THE white supremacist who told a judge he had turned his back on racism before being jailed over the bashing of Asian students has done an about-turn after being released from prison. Nelson labourer Daniel Kitto, 21, was sentenced to eight months last year after he and his then 28-year-old mate Harry McCormack attacked three Korean students from Nelson College outside a dairy…

McCormack, who was sentenced to 12 months, kicked one of the schoolboys in the head and punched another. Kitto punched the third. Kitto wrote to Nelson District Court judge David McKegg before the sentencing. He said: “I am writing this letter to tell you how sorry I am for what I have done. I feel sick. They were only kids. I thought they were my age. I have realised there is no future in being a racist skinhead and if I was to carry on that way I would spend a lot of time in prison.”

But on Thursday, Kitto told Sunday News he wanted all non-Europeans to “go home”. He said he was proud of his actions. “I’m just sick of seeing all the Asians come to Nelson,” he said. “They are taking our jobs and buying all of our land. I am just frustrated by them being here. (Asians) are bludging health care and schooling resources.” Kitto, who served four months in prison, claimed a number of people have since praised him for his actions. “A few have patted me on the back and said, `Well done’. Some people have even bought me a beer,” he said. Kitto said his regret for the race attack, in March last year, was that his victims were so young. “The one Harry kicked was 14, mine was 17,” he said…

A Maricopa County, Arizona, judge has sentenced the last of four racist skinhead defendants for their role in the attempted murder of one of their own gang members in 2006. Kelly Ann Harkins, 29, received an 18-year sentence on June 3, 2008, after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder.

In January 2006, four members of the Arizona Northern American Skinheads/SS Guardians, a loosely organized racist skinhead group, took Amanda Crow, a 19-year-old recent recruit of the group, into the desert outside Phoenix. The assailants beat her, slit her throat and severed her spinal cord, and left her for dead. Crow was later found by a group of recreational ATV riders who obtained aid for her. She ultimately survived the attack, but remains a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the neck down…

    Locally, boneheads have a number of upcoming gigs. In Adelaide on July 18(?), Blood & Honour and the Southern Cross Hammerskins are organising a second annual Mid-Winter Fest. In Melbourne on September 13, the same mobs are organising the umpteenth annual Ian Stuart is Dead celebration, *ing Blood Red Eagle, Ravenous and some foreigners. Also in Melbourne, on July 19, a Jimmy Pursey-less Sham 69 is playing at the East Brunswick Hotel, with support from Sydney bands T.H.U.G. and Sin City (or possibly Toe to Toe) and local band Bastard Squad.

    T.H.U.G. is an interesting band, featuring as it does Chumley and Simon, two members of one of Australia’s pioneering neo-Nazi bands of the ’80s, White Lightning. While White Lightning has long since gone (‘though its recordings are still available on numerous neo-Nazi mail orders), T.H.U.G. continues to celebrate the language of violence in such songs as ‘We Rule’, originally released as a track on White Lightning’s one LP (of the same title). Besides which, it’s not obvious much has changed for the boys in the band. In 2000, Simon was interviewed by a Dutch neo-Nazi zine Out of Order. Simon says:

I suspect the reason why Marxists ‘babble’ about history is because they have been implicated in the horrors of Stalinism and wish to distinguish themselves from that monstrosity. Official history is the bourgeoisie’s history, and its mission today is to wreath nationalism, liberal democracy and the market economy in myth, so as to have us believe that these are eternal, immutable and immovable.

So tonight I want to talk about the anarchist resistance to Franco, from 1939 onwards. Before I do that I want to say two or three things, because some of the things I say may sound rather harsh and critical of the CNT (and I’m not really going to talk about anything else apart from anarchism). So if it sounds harsh, it’s simply to try and be realistic. I am not particularly cruel or thoughtless or heartless or smug. It’s very easy for all of us, 70 years onward, to say clever statements about it or think smugly about it or try and use it as a debating point. The truth of the matter is that probably if you look at the 20th century, the anarchists, both in the CNT-FAI and the FIJL (the libertarian youth), and the anarchists who were not involved in those organizations, came nearer to creating a revolutionary change in everyday life than anyone else ever did.

Two anarchist students from the city of Penza in Russia were arrested on June 19 for handing out leaflets. The leaflets stated “Government is the prison of the people. Become an anarchist and free yourself!” Police are bringing criminal charges against the two, Oslav Kirosheyev and Vitaly Bakhmasterov, who face expulsion from their university and imprisonment if found guilty.

Who is Anna?

She’s there – on page 266! With a look of sly disdain on her face and a smile just ready to curl up the sides of her face. But not quite. How did she get there? It’s baffling, really, since in September 2007, great pains were taken to conceal her identity in a stuffy, federal courtroom in Sacramento, CA. White noise was played over the speakers as she was sworn in, so none present would hear her real name. Courtroom artists were not allowed to draw her face. A spectator was nearly booted from the room when it was suspected that they might have been attempting to take her picture with their cell phone. And Eric’s lawyer – Mark Reichel – was only able to learn her true name one week before trial, making any meaningful investigation of her ultimately impossible. It was claimed that Anna’s identity had to be kept hidden because her life was being threatened by radical “eco-terrorists” who were angry with her for entrapping their friends and comrades. But the half-page, full body picture of Anna on page 266 – in an internationally distributed magazine – would certainly seem to belie that line of argumentation. (As well as other events in recent history – such as the known identity of the person responsible for the arrests of almost a dozen of his former friends in the northwest, Jake Ferguson. He was shot and killed on October 27, 2006 during the teachers’ strike in the Mexican city of Oaxaca.”

British settlement of Australia began as a penal colony governed by a captain of the Royal Navy. Until the 1850s, when local forces began to be recruited, British regular troops garrisoned the colonies with little local assistance. From 1788 marines guarded English settlements at Sydney Cove and Norfolk Island; they were relieved in 1790 by a unit specifically recruited for colonial service, and in 1810 the 73rd Regiment of Foot became the first line regiment to serve in Australia. From then until 1870, 25 British infantry regiments and several smaller artillery and engineer units were stationed in the colonies. One role of the troops was to guard Australia against external attack, but their main job was to maintain civil order, particularly against the threat of convict uprisings, and to suppress the resistance of the Aboriginal population to British settlement…
