Iron. Lyin’. Zion.

According to Shua Garfield, writing in the DSP‘s Green Left Weakly (#678, August 9, 2006), members of another Leninist group, Socialist Alternative, were confronted at a stall at the University of Melbourne on July 24 by Zionist students, angry over the party’s opposition to Israel’s invasion and occupation of southern Lebanon and Palestine.

So angry, in fact, that they tipped over the stall.

Ted Lapkin (a former ‘combat intelligence officer’ in the Israeli army and shill for the US pharmaceutical industry, among other things) of the Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council (AIJAC), is also angry. At Crikey, he critiques Antony Loewenstein’s new book My Israel Question and says it’s riddled with errors. Elsewhere, Ted also maintains that Australian academia is riddled with anti-Zionists: “Evan Jones, Amin Saikal and Andrew Vincent [serving] as typical exemplars of this breed”.

And here was me thinking that they were all raving Communists.

Oh wait…

FROM INSIDE IRAN, A MESSAGE FROM THE GAY ‘ZINE MAHA

The following message was distributed today (August 6) by the editors of MAHA, the clandestine gay ‘zine in Iran, who ask that it be distributed widely. MAHA means “we” or “us” in Persian. Originally begun in 2004 as a newspaper after a crackdown on Iranian gay websites by the Tehran regime, MAHA is now distributed in PDF format to its subscribers.

FROM THE EDITORS OF MAHA:

We note some differences of opinion in the international lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) movement about how to best support LGBT people in Iran. We would like to express our view, and we believe that a great number of our readers share our opinion. Iranian society has developed despite the oppression. The demand for democracy and human rights is growing in our country.

We believe that the human rights of Iranian women, students, workers and LGBT people are not western phenomenon but aspects of universal human rights and are important for human freedom, dignity and fulfilment in Iran – and everywhere.

Despite all our difficulties and dangers, the Iranian LGBT community is getting more and more informed and is expressing its demand for human rights. We identify as LGBT people and want the same freedoms that LGBT people worldwide want.

Let no one claim there is not homophobic oppression in Iran. Every LGBT Iranian is at potential risk of arrest, imprisonment, flogging and execution. Avoiding such a fate requires leading a double life and hiding one’s sexuality. Even though there are secret gay parties and magazines, we are all at risk. Great discretion is the only thing that keeps many of us from the jails of the authorities – and worse…

(en) Israel, Media, Aljazeerah, We shall all lose: A diary report, a day after the Tel Aviv rally : Adam Keller

“Is this the last week?” people asked each other. Since the jets went streaking northwards to rain death over Beirut and the missiles came shrieking back southwards to an ever-widening number of Israeli communities, Israeli activists had been gathering every Saturday evening and marching in protest through the streets of Tel-Aviv.

According to the confident predictions emanating from Condoleezza Rice’s entourage at the beginning of the week, by today a ceasefire should have already been in place. But Saturday was at least as bloody as the preceding days, with the end of the killing seeming an ever-receding horizon. As thousands streamed to the rendezvous at the end of Ben Tzion Boulevard (accustomed place of the weekly Women in Black vigil) the prospects of a ceasefire were a major subject of conversation.

“To us, ‘ceasefire’ and ‘cessation of hostilities’ seem the same, but the diplomats hide a hell of a lot of meaning between nuances of this kind. It could make a life or death difference on the ground afterwards, we have to look very carefully at what the Americans and French are up to, over there in New York” said a white-haired man with a big sign reading “We are not Bush’s puppets!”

To the mother and her two daughters, killed this morning at Arab ell-Aramsheh from the direct hit of a Katyusha missile, it will no longer make any difference. (Like nearly half the Israeli civilian casualties, they were Arabs, in whose community the government never thought of installing air-raid shelters or alarms). And whatever the final formulation of the UN resolution, it will also come far too late for the 33 farm workers (35 in other accounts) killed by a single Israeli bomb near the Lebanese-Syrian border (most of the Israeli media did not even bother to mention it).

Here in the heart of Tel-Aviv we had to contend with a fortunately non-lethal kind of missile: a salvo of eggs suddenly plastered the gathering activists. The police somehow failed to notice the perpetrators, despite being present on the scene in great numbers (there had been extensive and exhausting negotiations on the route of the march, the authorities rejecting the organizers original proposals on various bureaucratic grounds)…

Joe seeks new Senate partner?

Totally.

F!@#ing.

Bizarre.

Today’s Herald Sun reports ‘Pervert stalked MP and TV star’. According to Kate Uebergang :

JANA Wendt and Julia Gillard were unwitting victims of a serial stalker who photographed countless women from the waist down.

The stalker, a would-be MP with a fetish for women’s bottoms, photographed the media celebrity and Labor frontbencher at public events without their knowledge.

Steven Reghenzani, 47, of Chelsea, is believed to have snapped Wendt in October 2004, when she interviewed him and an associate over their failed runs for the Senate as independents.

A similarly “failed” attempt to win a Senate seat — or, alternatively but more accurately, a failed attempt to popularise ‘anarchism’ (sic) through the ill-considered attempt to create a Senate ticket — took place six years previously, in 1998. According to Joe, “Steve Reghenzani and myself ran on a platform of A New Constitution for a New Millennium” (Anarchist Age Weekly Review Number, #285, February 3 — 9, 1998). Joe’s publicity stunt A New Constitution for a New Millennium in 1998 became Direct Democracy Not Parliamentary Rule (or possibly Parliamentary Democracy, Two Minutes of Illusory Power) in 2001, and possibly even retained this title for the ‘campaign’ of 2004. (In 1990, Joe campaigned alongside another Stephen.)

Expect more at the next Federal Election…

SPLC on violent boneheads

The latest issue of the Southern Poverty Law Centre‘s Intelligence Report (Summer, 2006) contains an interesting article on recent shenanigans in the US neo-Nazi milieu, specifically, violent assaults upon a handful of National Socialist Movement members by as many as 50 boneheads at ‘Nordic Fest’ on May 27.

Apparently, the assembled boneheads were incensed by one Steven Boswell’s claim that ‘the movement would never be helped “by belonging to a social club where all we do is drink and shoot the shit every Saturday night”. He went on to say that Aryans “are far more stingy than Jews” in supporting their own cause, and then added that “our women are deserting us wholesale… because we are weak”.’

Ooops.

This incident precedes by less than a month the revelations surrounding the NSM’s links to… Satan!

“But you must not publish sedition! You must not publish sedition!”

[now]

::::::: Ask Jarrod :::::::

@ndy : What will be the effects of the sedition laws on writers? And is it true that Frank Moorhouse was once a member of a militant anarchist group?

On the face of it, there’s a pretty straightforward effect of sedition laws upon writers: they get jailed. However, in this session [at the Byron Bay Writers Festival], we are to find out that in 21st century Australia it means officers of the law bearing court warrants and specially designed hammers will come around to your publisher’s office and smash the computer hard drives containing your manuscript. In Indonesia, it may mean you may lose your house – and possibly ‘disappear’ when your words are considered to have called for the overthrow of the prevailing government – or indeed, upset those in power…

Frank Moorhouse comes to the microphone and details his experience of freedom of expression and its repression during the 1950s – noting that while members of the Communist Party and their ‘fellow travellers’ were hunted, spied upon and harangued, his own efforts in a militant [er] anarchist group were considered no threat to the nation, according to his own ASIO file.”

Australian Law Reform Commission Inquiry on Sedition

[then]

::::::: Ask Bishop Wenski :::::::

@ndy : Bishop Wenski, who are the anarchists, and what do they want?

At the beginning of the 20th century, the world found itself in a war started when the Austrian prince was shot in Sarajevo by someone then called an “anarchist.” Today we would call him a terrorist. Then too, the world was undergoing an accelerated process of globalization, thanks to the steamship, the telegraph and the industrial revolution. Many of the anarchists of the day were anti-globalists, so then as now terrorism is, in a sense, a reaction to globalization.”

::::::: Ask Doctor Bob :::::::

@ndy : “It may be as well to point out here that the dynamite policy has nothing to do with Anarchy” said J.A. Andrews in 1894. What did the authorities of Victoria think, and how did they react to the publication of Andrews’ Handbook of Anarchy?

“A letter from the Chief Secretary and Premier, Dibbs, 14 June 1894 to the Hon. C.G.Heydon, (Solicitor-General?) with a copy of the pamphlet, Handbook of Anarchy attached, asked for his careful perusal ‘with a view of considering whether any action should be taken regarding it’. In the context of the time, Dibbs doubtless had some charge like ‘sedition’ or ‘incitement to ‘murder’ in mind. After some deliberations, Andrews was prosecuted and convicted for selling this ‘pamphlet’ without legal imprint, even though many other publications including the Hansard of the NSW Parliament, were seriously in breach of the rule. Andrews had his name and address on the publication, but not in the ‘correct’ place. The Bulletin received only a polite letter of censure for a similar, technical breach…

When the authorities came to peruse The Handbook of Anarchy, which should be considered Andrews’ definitive statement, they found nothing they could hang serious charges on. So, through the person of Whittingdale Johnson, who had already sentenced Broken Hill strike leaders to jail in 1892, they settle for perjury of themselves and for a minor curtailment of Andrews’ activities and of that of two comrades, who were arrested for distributing the pamphlet. No court record remains of this ‘trial’ because no ‘trial’ actually occurred. No witnesses were called, no evidence taken. The judge, bouncing up and down, shouting, ‘But you must not publish sedition! You must not publish sedition!’, handed down penalties which bore no relation to a charge of sedition, and no relation to reality. He simply refused to listen to Andrews’ defence. (See Bulletin, 3 November, 1894, p3.)

The authorities were able to gain the anti-anarchist publicity that would ensure public acceptance of the judge’s arbitrary behaviour if they ever heard of it, not from this case — since they were on such particularly shaky ground — but from a set of fortuitous circumstances which largely depended for their effect on previous anti-anarchist hysteria. In France, just days before the Sydney ‘trial’, [Sante Jeronimo Caserio] assassinated President Carnot. On 30 June, a scandal-sheet called the Bird O’Freedom center-paged a scurrilous, vicious attack on anarchism, Andrews and a so-called anarchist farm at Smithfield. Using the French murder as the jumping-off point, the article correlated social revolution with seas of blood, and with men forcing women to share their sexual favours around. Marx and Engels were said to have been the leaders of the Paris Commune, and anarchists, unionists, Satan and mad fanatics were all, literally, lumped together.”

Josh Wolf : Integrity = Jail

Josh Wolf, 24, “a dark-haired fireplug of a man who sees the world through the lenses of an activist, an anarchist and a filmmaker who posts his videos on the Web” has been sent to jail by US District Judge William Alsup for refusing to compromise his journalistic and political integrity by co-operating with a grand jury and supplying them with footage of anarchist protesters. As Laura Locke, writing for Time magazine (August 3, 2006) notes, “Wolf is the first blogger to be targeted by federal authorities for refusing to cooperate with a grand jury”.

According to The New York Times :

‘Blogger Jailed After Defying Court Orders’
Jesse McKinley
August 2, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 1 — A freelance journalist and blogger was jailed on Tuesday after refusing to turn over video he took at an anticapitalist protest here last summer and after refusing to testify before a grand jury looking into accusations that crimes were committed at the protest.

The freelancer, Josh Wolf, 24, was taken into custody just before noon after a hearing in front of Judge William Alsup of Federal District Court. Found in contempt, Mr. Wolf was later moved to a federal prison in Dublin, Calif., and could be imprisoned until next summer, when the grand jury term expires, said his lawyer, Jose Luis Fuentes.

Earlier this year, federal prosecutors subpoenaed Mr. Wolf to testify before a grand jury and turn over video from the demonstration, held in the Mission District on July 8, 2005. The protest, tied to a Group of 8 meeting of world economic vandals in Scotland, ended in a clash between demonstrators and the San Francisco police, with one officer sustaining a fractured skull.

A smoke bomb or a firework was also put under a police car, and investigators are looking into whether arson was attempted on a government-financed vehicle.

Mr. Wolf, who posted some of the edited video on his Web site, www.joshwolf.net, and sold some of it to local television stations, met with investigators, who wanted to see the raw video. But Mr. Wolf refused to hand over the tapes, arguing that he had the right as a journalist to shield his sources.

On Tuesday, Judge Alsup disagreed, ruling that the grand jury “has a legitimate need” to see what Mr. Wolf filmed.

Mr. Wolf, a recent college graduate, is the latest journalist to face prison time for refusing to cooperate with federal investigators. Last year, the New York Times reporter Judith Miller served nearly three months in jail after refusing to divulge her sources in the investigation of the leak of a covert C.I.A. agent’s name.

Jane Kirtley, a professor of media ethics and law at the University of Minnesota, said that although the jailing of journalists had become more common, Mr. Wolf’s case was the first she had heard of in which a blogger had been pursued and eventually jailed by federal authorities.

“There is a tendency on the part of the prosecutors to go aggressively after people not perceived to have a big gun behind them,” Ms. Kirtley said. “They are the most vulnerable links in the chain.”

While California has a so-called shield law meant to protect journalists and their sources, no such law exists at the federal level. Even if there was such a law, Ms. Kirtley said, it is unclear whether a blogger and freelancer would fall under it.

According to his Web site, Mr. Wolf has been active in his defense, holding news conferences and posting interviews and newspaper articles on his site. On Tuesday, however, the site’s last message read, “This blog will be updated sometime shortly after my hearing … wish me luck guys!”

Mr. Wolf has attracted supporters, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which introduced a resolution objecting to the federal government’s role in the investigation. The Society of Professional Journalists contributed to Mr. Wolf’s legal defense fund.

Mr. Fuentes said he had already prepared an appeal and would file it immediately. He also planned to ask for bail, though he was not certain where the money to post it would come from. “His mother has been trying to fund-raise,” Mr. Fuentes said. “But he might lose his job.”

Reporters Without Borders, among numerous others, has called for his immediate release.

The Australian media, on the other hand, has expressed its interest and solidarity by carefully avoiding making any reference to the case whatsoever.

Lucky he’s got a supportive Mum and comrades around the world then eh?

‘Poland shuts down neo-fascist website for the second time’

Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa)
August 4, 2006

Warsaw (dpa) – A Polish-language neo-fascist website inciting racial hatred and violence against individuals it labelled “enemies of the race” was shut down Friday for a second time, Poland’s Police Chief Marek Biekowski confirmed in Warsaw.

The site, hosted on a US-based server, was first shut down in early July by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at the request of Polish authorities [and against DreamHost‘s better inclinations].

But a Polish police unit dealing with cyber-crime discovered the Polish neo-fascist website had been relaunched a week later and was hosted by a server in the US city of Dallas, Texas. US-based neo-Nazis were thought to have relaunched the Polish-language site.

The site was closed a second time on Friday in cooperation with the FBI.

The neo-fascist website targeted Polish left-wing and anti-fascist political activists, ecologists, feminists, gay rights activists as well as journalists and intellectuals.

It labelled them “enemies of the race” and publish[ed] their personal details including home, work and school addresses, telephone numbers and photos online.

Police have detained several of the website’s designers and administrators in Poland, all alleged neo-fascists.

However, Polish Interior Minister Ludwig Dorn on Friday confirmed that a man suspected of the near-fatal stabbing of a 30-year-old Polish [/Jewish] anarchist was “not linked” to neo-fascist groups.

Originally the stabbing had been linked to the man being targeted on the Polish neo-fascist website.

[Possibly following Russia’s lead] Officials termed the 24-year-old suspect charged with attempted murder of the anarchist “a hooligan, not a Nazi”.

Polish police recently detained a suspect known for neo-Nazi views who allegedly attacked Poland’s Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich on the street in Warsaw in late May.

Schudrich did not suffer serious injuries in the anti-Semitic attack which was strongly condemned by senior Polish politicians including the President and the Prime Minister.

In related news, proboards has recently pulled the plug on redwatchnz‘s forum for neo-Nazi losers in New Zealand (while blogger continues its support for the project as a whole).

Your invitation to the 2006 Sydney Forum

Dr. James Saleam’s fascist Australia First Party is organising a conference to take place in Sydney on the weekend of August 26/27, but so wary of possible “disruption” to the event are they that they’ve decided to keep its location secret until the morning of the first day’s events. (The second day’s events will be taking place at the same location as last year’s conference: Saleam’s bunker at 725 Princes Highway, Tempe.) According to the organisers, the speakers at this year’s Forum, the sixth, include:

Neil Baird — a former Treasurer of NSW One Nation whose scribblings, titled ‘The News Report’, he regularly emails to other members of the Australian far right milieu;

Jim Cassidy — the current President of the NSW branch of One Nation (curiously, according to a report in The Australian, “Since February, Dr Saleam has been asked not to attend meetings of the NSW branch of One Nation. Jim Cassidy, One Nation state president, said this was because of Dr. Saleam’s past connections to “white supremacist” organisations”);

Greg Clancy — author (of a little-known and — by the sounds of it — rather silly tract called The People Smugglers (2002)) and apologist for the HoWARd Government’s policy on refugees;

Andrew Fraser — the racist formerly known as The Nutty (Associate) Professor;

James Saleam;

and “a bloody funny sheila” named Sandy Thorne, whose unique comedy stylings will be supplemented by tales based on her experiences as a screw at the Woomera and Curtin concentration camps for refugees (which she later published as Beyond the Razor Wire).

To get the venue details, interested parties will have to telephone either 0407 732 868 or 0411 669 181 after 7.30 am on the Saturday morning, August 26. The organisers — among whom ranks the German neo-Nazi Welf Herfurth — promise that plenty of time will be available for any Sydney resident to reach the venue by 9.15am for a 9.30am start.

Extract from Beyond The Razor Wire, supposedly from Sandy Thorne’s diary, Woomera, June 24 2001:

Another boat arrived at Ashmore Reef. The fighting and unrest in Main compound escalated as the Centre became crowded with more and more boat people, many of whom had no concept of queuing and taking their turn, being patient, or sharing and caring for their fellow Man. This fact, coupled with the fact that many of Main Compound’s resis had been rejected, presented an extremely volatile situation.

Many of the rejected detainees would crowd at Golf Three gate, demanding the DIMIA… manager, or the Detention Centre manager, or their lawyer, come to the gate immediately to hear their grievances, shaking their fists, smacking their fists into their palms and yelling furiously, as if they had a right. Their attitude would burr us right up, but we had to remain calm and polite. It would have done the do-gooders good, to have a bunch of angry Arabs in their faces, as we did every day. I’d think of men of my father’s and grandfather’s era – the men who’d fought in the Middle East – what would they think to see these ratbags trying to get into our peaceful country?

“Cert One Medical! Main Compound, detainee self-harm”, became an almost daily broadcast as one of them would scratch at his arm to gain attention. The ensuing melodrama from the slasher and his mates would be like an Italian opera. Then the lip-sewing began. It was a pitiful, sickening sight. That night I sat on my verandah listening to Slim Dusty and comparing the world I’d been used to, with what was going on in the Centre. No way a mother from Thargomindah or Blackall could sew her kid’s lips together… Less than five kilometres away from my flat, alien things were happening. For the thousandth time, I thanked God for giving us razor wire fences.

We all knew Main was going to boil over soon and later that night, it was on. I’d been sleeping in my uniform, expecting to be pulled out of bed any time, so when the pounding began on everyone’s doors, I was instantly awake and on my feet, pulling my boots on, ready for anything. “Main’s going off! C’Mon! Main’s going off!”

Speeding out of town, along the four ks to the Centre, the adrenalin was already pumping and increasing, as we came within sight and sound of our friends, the asylum-seekers, smashing, burning, shouting “F… A.C.M.!” “F… Australia!” over and over. The razor-wire fences were protecting the outside world from these violent people, but we had to go in and take control. There would be people in there, frightened, who wanted no part of the anarchy. I spared a thought for my friends in there. Were Laila, Mina and Masomeh, young Hamid and a few others I really liked, cowering in their dongas, or… the thought suddenly hit me with a shock… would I see them pelting rocks… at me? Mina and Masomeh – no. Hamid and Laila? Maybe… Yes, it was feasible, but highly unlikely, I liked to think.

As we rounded the corner of Admin and came into view of Main compound, the shouting and abuse hurled through the fence at us from the charming residents, was deafening. It sounded like all six hundred were after our scalps. Main was a sea of angry, yelling, spitting, swarthy whiskered faces, beneath a forest of shaking fists – a very scary sight for an unarmed person. Clutched in their fists were the weapons they had accumulated and fashioned: steel posts to ram into our knees, shards of glass, sharp pieces of tin, and knives fashioned from stolen cutlery and razors to stab us with. Their lovely veiled ladies and delightful children were ready to pelt us with the rocks and pavers they’d stacked up in heaps. Buildings were burning in the background and we could hear glass being smashed everywhere.

The kit-up room was in semi-organised crowded chaos, with officers grabbing helmets, shields, batons, elbow and kneeguards, adjusting straps and hanging flexicuffs on belts with grunts and sighs of exasperation. We all walked outside to join the others, now waiting in a formidable formation outside Operations. We could hear buildings being wrecked, Australia being condemmed, and our lives being threatened, as we lined up ready to go in. By then I felt like a leashed Doberman…
