Frank Cassar : Australia’s Best Landlord?

Landlords are Good, and voluntary real estate industry standards, rigorous government scrutiny, and a large and well-organised public and social housing sector ensure that the accommodation they provide is reasonably priced and of excellent quality. This is why renters–a group which in Victoria constitutes approximately one-quarter of all households–are in general extremely appreciative of landlords, while on the other hand regard squatters as being the degenerate scum they undoubtedly are.

Despite this, some people think that landlords are Bad. One in particular, Frank Cassar, is alleged to be Melbourne’s worst. Contrary perhaps to expectations, I’m happy to argue that he is in fact Australia’s best.

How is this possible?

To begin with, Frank Cassar is a very hard worker. After all, how else could he afford to obtain such a large number of rental properties? Given that work, like landlords, is Good, and someone who works harder than others deserves to be rewarded more than most, Frank obviously deserves everything he has acquired. Secondly, that his many years of back-breaking toil has resulted in his now being in a position to generously offer housing to those in need, and that this should have generated vitriolic atacks against him, is appalling.

Why aren’t those granted the privilege of temporarily occupying Frank’s numerous properties grateful?

A scurrilous campaign is currently being conducted against Cassar’s good name. Possibly the worst aspect of this campaign is that it allows Cassar’s many critics to alert potential tenants to the fact that Frank has faced persecution by the state (or what law-talking guys and hostile forces at Fairfax have declared to be legitimate court cases resulting in thousands of dollars in fines being imposed upon the little Aussie battler); worse, it allows those who care to monitor Frank’s financial manoeuvrings to do so by way of various social networking sites and sites such as Gumtree.

I say: leave Frank alone!

WRITTEN ADJOURNMENT RESPONSES
Wednesday, 6, May 2009 COUNCIL 2227
Rooming houses: registration
Raised with: Housing
Raised by: Ms Lovell
Raised on: 31 March 2009
REPLY:

The Government is committed to improving protections for rooming house residents. The Government is taking action [on] a number of fronts to pursue these improvements.

As you have noted, the Government amended the Health (Prescribed Accommodation) Regulations 2001 last year to increase the scope of the regulations.

Prior to these changes, stakeholders, including the TUV and local government, expressed confusion with which rooming houses were required to register with local government and which weren’t. The Government has responded to this request by amending the regulations and extending the protections of the regulations to smaller rooming houses. This will see provisions such as minimum room sizes, prevention of overcrowding, cleanliness, sanitation and other health standards now apply to these rooming houses. The changes were enthusiastically supported by a range of stakeholders. I am sure the House will agree that affording residents of smaller rooming houses the benefits of these additional provisions has been a beneficial change.

The responsibility to enforce the regulations rests with local government. Other protections for rooming house residents are contained in the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 and Building Code of Australia. Consumer Affairs Victoria has been working with local government to improve inspection and enforcement practices. In July 2008 enforcement activities resulted in the successful prosecution of Mr Frank Cassar for multiple offences under the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 relating to rooming houses. Mr Cassar was fined $16,000 for these offences…

Mark Kennedy and ‘Officer A’ // “Karen Sullivan” and Officer XX

Update : Everybody Hates A Tourist Loves Spies. Lyn Watson is one; Mark Jacobs aka ‘Marco’ is another. The Guardian is moar coy, but still.

Tricksy police spies have been coming unstuck lately. Well… a couple of ’em, anyway. Like, in a few places: the US, and one of its satellites.

Apparently, state agencies get very upset when citizens organise to do stuff like protest war, or raise funds to assist women’s groups, or take direct action to stop pollution.

Who knew?

In August 2010, Australian authorities launched an investigation into some local Kurdish associations for alleged links to the PKK. Buggered if I know what’s come of it. Big ups to Turkish courts for sentencing Kurdish journalist Emine Demir of the daily Azadiya Welat (Independence of Homeland) to 138 years in jail but, throwing the gauntlet down at the feet of worried spooks Down Under.

Mark Kennedy and ‘Officer A’

Exposed back in October by activists, last week the story made it into the The Guardian, accompanied by further revelations regarding another undercover with the exciting name of ‘Officer A’ (Second police officer to infiltrate environmental activists unmasked, Paul Lewis, Rob Evans and Martin Wainwright, guardian.co.uk, January 12, 2011). According to Paul, Rob and Martin, Officer A lived in a house in the student quarter of Leeds, showed a keen interest in protest and had an anarchist poster of the Queen Mother with punk hair on her wall.

The moral of this story?

Never trust a punk!

In other Schnews, like Mehmet Ersoy/Osman in Australia, Mark Kennedy also worked for the corporate sector while he was protecting the state and British industry from terrorism; like Rob Gilchrist in Aotearoa/New Zealand, he also fuct about, raising a whole series of other, rather peculiar ethical questions (apparently).

Then again, don’t they always?

The exposure of an FBI infiltrator (for further details see : FBI infiltration of anti-war movement uncovered in Minneapolis, Fight Back!, January 12, 2011) follows closely on the heels of the decision by local police in Richmond, Virginia not to prosecute anarchists in Richmond, Virginia after they published on the Interwebs some of the dox they obtained from the police under an FOI request.

Campaign Builds to Defend Persecuted Aboriginal Family

A campaign was launched on January 12 to draw attention to police harassment of an Aboriginal family in western Sydney. In addition to the distribution of a press release detailing several arrests police conducted during the course of a 21yo family member’s birthday party, the campaign has also released a video, one which documents both the arrests and alleged police assaults upon the 21yo and other family members:

The press release which accompanies the video, and which includes a number of stills, can be found @ Sydney Indymedia. After detailing the events of September, the press release goes on to argue that the family in question is subject to continued harassment on account of their continued efforts to obtain justice for TJ Hickey.

So why would Riverstone Police want to pick on an innocent family peacefully going about their own lives? Well, you see, as far as bigoted police are concerned Tisha’s family have a problem … they are Aboriginal. As the enforcers of an unfair social order that is geared to only serve the big business elite and which was founded on the dispossession of Aboriginal people, Australian police are often hostile to the poor and are notorious for downright brutality towards Aboriginal people. Furthermore, NSW police have a special hatred for Tisha’s family as they are Hickeys, close relatives of TJ Hickey the 17 year-old boy who was killed by racist police in February 2004 after they chased him through the streets of Redfern when he was riding his bicycle. As a result of their defiant refusal to abandon the quest for justice for their beloved TJ, the Hickeys, from Redfern to Riverstone, have faced police harassment over the last six and a half years.

TJ’s death triggered a small riot in Redfern. A centre of urban Aboriginal life for many decades, currently ‘The Block’ in Redfern is undergoing redevelopment (see : Friday deadline on the Block, but last residents are refusing to go, Matt Khoury, The Sydney Morning Herald, November 15, 2010). Most recently, “CEO of the Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC), Mick Mundine, has expressed frustration with his lack of success in obtaining funding for the redevelopment of The Block. On Monday, the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) rejected Mr Mundine’s application for funding” (Funding for The Block rejected again, Sophie Cousins, Alternative Media Group, January 13, 2011). You can watch Ray Jackson of the Indigenous Social Justice Association talk about TJ and the riots @ Engagemedia.

Right Wing Resistance New Zealand : They took our jobs!

Neo-Nazi Mormon Kyle Chapman‘s latest political project ‘Right Wing Resistance New Zealand’ has managed to get some moar media attention recently, following the group’s distribution of a They took our jobs! flyer around Christchurch (White supremacist flyers offend, Keith Lynch, The Press, January 12, 2011). The ‘offensive’ flyer employs familiar rhetoric (the country is being invaded by non-White immigrants who steal Kiwi jobs, lower living standards, spread infectious disease, imperil the maintenance of a White majority and so on and so forth) and irregular capitalisation.

Currently a student at the horribly multicultural Christchurch [?] University, Kyle’s battles with the non-White hordes threatening to swamp New Zealand/Aotearoa are the stuff of legend, exceeded only by his ongoing battles with literacy and basic logic. Prior to this latest propaganda coup, in December Kyle–whose commitment to fascist politics appears to exist in inverse proportion to his grasp of good spelling and grammar–played host to Canadian Holocaust denialist Paul Fromm.

Paul Fromm in New Zealand: Report From Kyle Chapman

Australia First received this report from Kyle Chapman, our Kiwi ally in the South Island.

We are very happy that Paul made it to New Zealand to speak to us humble folk. At short notice we obtained a venue and rallied some right-thinkers for Paul on Monday the 6th.

His speech was very thought provoking and it showed the many similarities between NZ and Canada. He spoke mainly on Free Speech and Immigration. – both very relevant subjects for us here in New Zealand.

We showed him around our broken city (still a lot of damage after earthquake) and he took in the views from the hills over Christchurch.

We arranged for phone calls with key people in the Nationalist movement so Paul could build a foundation for future contact.

Again it was a great experience to have a leading figure in our movement to come to New Zealand. Thanks to Genet for starting the process and for Australia First for getting him on this side of the world in the first place.

Thank You, Paul, for coming over!

The Boys’ next big bash will be on March 21; nominally ‘International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination’, but adopted by Angry Aryans as ‘White Pride World Wide Day’ aka ‘People Of European Origin With Pale Complexions In Calgary And Christchurch Who Choose To Celebrate Their Wise Choice Of Parents By Waving Flags In Public Day’.

*sigh*

Community assembly underway at Swift Australia

A strike @ Visy in Dandenong ended last month; another @ Swift in Brooklyn [map] is ongoing and now into its fifth week. The factory is located on Industry Park Drive:

Brooklyn Processing Plant
30 Industry Park Drive
BROOKLYN VIC 3012
PO Box 36
ALTONA NORTH VIC 3025
Phone: 03 9315 1299
Facsimile: 03 9314 1011

Swift Australia is a subsidiary of the Brazilian-based TNC JBS Friboi, the largest beef producer in the world. Swift has been busy taking advantage of the 457 visa scheme elsewhere in the country, and raking in even fatter profits as a result. The strike/lockout was triggered by workers’ refusal to to agree to a measly 2% pay increase “in exchange for working Saturdays with reduced penalties” (Brooklyn meatworkers in wage war, Maribyrnong Weekly, December 8, 2010).

The Workers Solidarity Network (Melbourne) provides the following infos:

Community assembly underway at Swift Australia

Striking cold store workers at Swift Australia voted against the latest in a string of condescending offers from management today, as Workers Solidarity Network members and union activists assembled at the site.

The workers’ supporters blocked trucks throughout the day, sending a message to the company that endless stalling and bad-faith negotiation must end.

Confident despite their five-week ordeal, the workers reminded those attempting to cross the picket that Swift cannot be allowed to set this precedent for the mistreatment of workers, and that ‘touch one, touch all’ applies now more than ever.

ACTU President Ged Kearney was present, promising to do all she could to get more union supporters down to the site and funds raised. The Western Suburbs Community and Union Coalition, as well as ANF, MUA, ASU, NTEU, CFMEU and CEPU members all came to show their support for the striking workers, even helping to block trucks. All promised to return tomorrow with extra support.

Some workers, while appreciative, questioned why this community support was so long coming. Indeed because the call for community help has come so late in the dispute, it is crucial that all supporters go now and stand on the picket line alongside their friends in Brooklyn.

Political Views of Arizona Suspect Jared Lee Loughner Related to Third Position or National Anarchism?

From the Department of I only have my right arm!

Ernesto Aguilar has had a crack at sorting out the bizarro views of alleged mass murderer Jared Lee Loughner. Ernesto (see below) reckons that Loughner’s political perspective may be in closest accord with the bizarro neo-fascist and White supremacist kvlt known as ‘Third Positionism’ or ‘national anarchism’. I’m unconvinced. Loughner’s political opinions, such as they may be, are couched in terms which suggest that they are not, to put it mildly, the outcome of rational analysis but, rather more obviously, serious mental illness. As such, imputing a sensible worldview to the unfortunate Loughner is fraught with difficulty, and his online persona lends itself to all sorts of interpretations. Anyway, God Hates Fags.

In Australia meanwhile, the staff at Whitelaw Towers (Jim Perren and Peter Campbell) have revealed that the leader and likely only member of the ‘Western Australian National Anarchists’ is an UWA student named Nicholas Cole. As far as I can tell, Nicholas, is The Last Aryan Man Standing as far as the groupuscule in Australia is concerned, its fuhrer Welf Herfurth having now opted to join a neo-Nazi skinhead gang called ‘Volksfront Australia’, and his most excitable teenage follower, Scott Harrison, having chosen to join a White supremacist kvlt known as ‘Creativity’. The bad blood between the Australia First Party (Whitelaw Towers) and the Australian Protectionist Party (Nicholas Cole), as well as that between Volksfront (Herfurth) and Blood & Honour (Harrison), will presumably continue to produce friction and leaks of one kind or another.

In other exciting development(s), the blog known as ‘National Anarchist Women’ has become ‘Europid Musings’: a ‘Europid’ being, I presume, synonymous with Caucasian; hence White. (Or possibly not. Who knows? Eighteenth century German scholar Johann Friedrich Blumenbach was perhaps the first to nominate ‘White’ people as being ‘Caucasian’.) In any event, my favourite ‘national anarchist’ blog is by Lloyd Lacy, who currently holds the dubious honour of being the only black to publicly endorse the weirdoes. That Lloyd (aka Afro/Indigenous Fascist Party) admires Hitler and the Nazis, hates Jews, and believes that a secretive cabal of Levantines run the world is not exactly an obstacle to his joining the masses flocking to the N/A banner…

The political ideology of Jared Lee Loughner, arrested in weekend Arizona shootings resulting in two deaths and the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), is still being debated. However, his viewpoints brought for me association with an odd “post-left” stripe of quasi-anarchist politics, which I am curious about investigating.

In addition, when I heard about Loughner and the fight over his beliefs, I wondered if his philosophy might be neither what the left or right thinks, and instead be a hybrid of many beliefs — not unlike the Third Position politics seemingly popular with outfits like American Renaissance,[*] a group he is allegedly connected with — inside what seems to be a deranged mind.

First, there’s a good bit of study indicating Jared Lee Loughner may harbor more than a few ultraright perspectives.

Media reports indicating Loughner may have ties to the racist American Renaissance group are among issues remarked on by researchers. Jared Taylor of AR, for his part, denied the accusations. Such may be simply gamesmanship; the Southern Poverty Law Center has nailed various groups and individuals for millions of dollars in damages for crimes committed by followers.

The SPLC’s Hatewatch notes Loughner’s references to grammar echo the writings of far-right conspiracy theorist David Wynn Miller, who believes the government uses grammar to enslave Americans. [See also : Language: Origin and Meaning / Time And its Discontents, John Zerzan.] Political Research Associates’ Chip Berlet says Jared Loughner’s reputed writings on a “second” U.S. Constitution is a common calling card of the far right, which contends post-Reconstruction amendments are invalid.

Regardless, conservatives are tagging Loughner a leftist. There are at least some whiffs of that as well.

Among the references includes Twitter posts by someone who reportedly knew Jared Loughner. Confirmation of that relationship is still unclear. The right also says his interest in The Communist Manifesto and burning U.S. flags in his Youtube videos makes him left-leaning.

Few in the media are talking about Third Position politics, a fringe belief that there is an alternative to socialism and capitalism and which has a white supremacist edge to its vision of power. Folks like Tom Metzger, who lost a suit brought by the SPLC in 1990 for crimes committed by skinheads under his tutelage, are advocates of it. And, though American Renaissance isn’t publicly associated as a Third Position group, its line could easily be seen in that light.

For people interested in radicalism, it is easy to mistake more sinister (e.g. racist) militancy for run-of-the-mill protest. Extremes of the libertarian left and right, not unlike those espoused by Loughner, see the end of government as an ideal from which they can create a better society. For some, such ideas are revolutionary, even patriotic.

To be clear, many left and right anarchists do not support Jared Loughner. However, one anti-authoritarian view on this tragedy notwithstanding, it seemed to me some of what we apparently know so far of Loughner’s seemingly contradictory ideas fit nicely into a belief system called national anarchism.

National anarchism, which has held itself outside the left and right spectrums, has been around for decades. Its politics are solidly anti-statist, extreme libertarian and racist. Not quite fascist (national anarchism rejects Nazism and fascism) nor left (rejecting feminism and interracial dating, among other items), national anarchists consider themselves revolutionaries. The Wikipedia page should give you a little background.

Left anarchists contend national anarchism attempts to coopt their politics and have been battling national anarchists for years. A 2010 brawl resulted in several arrests.

BoingBoing recently posted transcripts of Loughner’s Youtube videos and a remark from someone who claims to have known Loughner (calling him very liberal). One transcript reads:

If I define terrorist then a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism, especially as a political weapon.

    I define terrorist.

Thus, a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism, especially as a political weapon.

If you call me a terrorist then the argument to call me a terrorist is Ad hominem. You call me a terrorist.

Thus, the argument to call me a terrorist is Ad hominem.

Every United States Military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix is receiving one mini bible before the tests.

Jared Loughner is a United States Military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix.

Therefore, Jared Loughner is receiving one mini bible before the tests.

I didn’t write a belief on my Army application, and the recruiter wrote on the application: None.

The majority of citizens in the United States of America have never read the United States of America’s Constitution.

You don’t have to accept the federalist laws.

Nonetheless, read the United States of America’s Constitution to apprehend all of the current treasonous laws.

    You’re literate, listener?

If the property owners and government official are no longer in ownership of their land and laws from a revolution then the revolutionary’s from the revolution are in control of the land and laws.

The property owners and government officials are no longer in ownership of their land and laws from a revolution.

Thus, the revolutionary’s from the revolution are in control of the land and laws.

Undoubtedly, Loughner is interested in some traditionally far-right beliefs related to the Constitution and law. However, his preoccupation with being a terrorist and revolutionary reminded me of many a leftist I’ve known. If the comments about his left leanings are to be believed, Loughner’s alleged American Renaissance ties (to be proven) and anti-state opinions reminded me of national anarchism, which is a marginalized belief for both right and left.

More is sure to come out in the next few days.

Talking Points Memo reports Loughner will be represented in court by Judy Clarke, who represented “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski and assisted in the case of confessed al-Qaeda operative Zacarias Moussaoui.

Notes on Anarchism (Albert Meltzer)

1

Anarchism was built up and invented by the working class to meet with specific problem[s] in working class organization and to point the way to a society free from oppression. It differed from Marxism or authoritarian socialism in that it saw that copying bourgeois forms of organization or government was a mistaken tactic; also that government could form a new tyranny. It was not generally realized at the time that there could be two forms of aspirants to tyranny–capitalists and bureaucrats could take over a new government, but prior to that the middle classes were also divided in their attitude to socialism. The middle class as defined by Marx–the profit making class–had a corollary in the mandarin class aiming at power and its class tyranny, and just as the middle class profit makers were originally divided in two (Liberal/progressives; and the Tory landlord elements gradually incorporated into the capitalist class) so the mandarins were divided between those who were successful and passed examinations to go on to power, and those who were not, and looked to the working class to provide them with support. The whole of the Marxist “intellectuals” represent this type of ‘failed mandarins’, who on the whole disdained anarchism as Utopian, and wished to show the working class how to do it. (Typical is the Red Army trained German Marxist leadership, which failed dismally even to formally resist Hitler, and went to Spain to show the ‘ignorant Spaniards’ how to fight!)

2

Since World War Two there has been disillusionment with the old left and some of the new left–equally failed mandarins–have seen that there is an alternative to Marxism. For them to take over the anarchist movement would be a disaster. In the main they regard themselves as the ‘unofficial anarchists’ though also proclaiming themselves part of the anarchist movement even if denying it and degrading it (e.g. George Woodcock). Such ‘failed mandarins’ are generally more honest than their Marxist counterparts who glorify the workers while pushing them out of their own movement, and taking over their history, anxious to use them but not allow them to lead. The “anarchist” type denies the working class has anything to do with its own movement, takes over the history and rewrites it as something entirely different. A very early type was Dr. Eltzbacher,[1] actually a judge, who rewrote the theory of anarchism according to what he thought were the various ‘schools of anarchism’ something which neatly fits in with this type of ‘unofficial anarchism’.

3

Prior to World War Two it was almost unknown and certainly bizarre to have non-workers in the movement (unless like Kropotkin they had abandoned their class status) though there was always, it is true, the tendency for “intellectuals”–but actually failed mandarins, sometimes genuine ones–to try to write themselves into the movement. During World War Two the phenomenon of pacifism grew rapidly. In most countries pacifism had to be revolutionary. It remains in some countries a major step if one refuses to join the army, one’s whole life is changed to rebellion. In Great Britain, owing to the liberal non-conformist tradition, conscientious objection was widespread in World War One and it won the battle for recognition. So that by World War Two it entered into a dialogue with the State and formed part of the Establishment. Nothing prevented or prevents Establishment figures being pacifists. Pacifism is advocated in peacetime by judges and journalists, but even in wartime by many leading figures, who thus made pacifism into a collaborationist doctrine. The anarchist movement attracted those people who, from bourgeois or mandarin circles, did not want to join the army, but felt the nationalist urge to do so–it provided them with a moral excuse. It did not make them into anarchists or revolutionaries, they remained liberals, and one can see the liberal influence in all of ‘unofficial anarchism’. A similar thing happened with so-called individualist anarchism. In America originally, later exported, some individualists from bourgeois or mandarin circles saw that the profession of anarchist ideas was the perfect moral excuse for avoiding taxation. Here one sees the conservative influence in a different sort of ‘unofficial anarchism’.

4

One must distinguish between (a) Anglo-Saxon pacifism, which is pure militant liberalism and has its own offshoots. (Liberalism seeks freedom within capitalism; anarchism implies there can be no freedom within the State.) Liberalism without its political connotations, though sometimes with, seeks to establish ‘rights’ (to an authoritarian or even a liberal, rights are given; to a libertarian they are taken–hence liberals can talk of rights of animals or foetuses but not libertarians–though it’s true they do so by a sheer misunderstanding of words). Libertarians do not necessarily oppose reforms, but Liberals live by them. (b) Gandhi-type pacifism–which as Gandhi himself said has more in common with war than Western pacifism. It is elitist, as it implies an elite takes power, and Gandhi indeed always had it. It requires much more of an elite even than Marxist-Leninism, and an elite which takes power is by definition elitist. (c) The pacifism that consists of struggling against militarism and imperialism, which is not necessarily liberal nor elitist. But where there is no conscription this does not exist.

5

Ecology is of course a vital issue today. Many people want to jump on the bandwagon, e.g. the Green Anarchists here (in Britain). Anarcho-syndicalists are for ecology. The argument by many ‘Greens’ that anarcho-syndicalism is against ecology, because it does not take up one issue that is trendy against all others, is false. We in the Anarchist Black Cross do not say that anyone who doesn’t support it must be in favour of anarchists being imprisoned!

6

It is false to say that there is a distinction between one form of genuine anarchism and another. The anarchosyndicalist movements of the world are all anarchist communist; the suggestion that collectivism was not communism has vanished nowadays (since collectives take communistic forms, and the question of work[er]s management and participation has resolved itself in international experience). Anarcho-syndicalist movements such as the CNT or the IWW in its heyday were patently individualistic, a darn sight more so than say Benjamin Tucker who was nothing if not a conformist! However, there is a distinction between genuine anarchism and the pale pink variants of it. The Freedom Press type anarchism has distinctions between Individualists and Communists which it seriously debates; and the Alternative Bookshop for its part has its distinctions between Agorism, anarcho-capitalism (!) and ministatism. If you lump all this together and call it the anarchist movement it is a pretty mixed bag and everyone quarrels with each other–something the academics love to say. If you take away what I have for convenience sake called the ‘genuine anarchists’ then it is fairly homogeneous.

7

The ‘sanitized’ anarchism of the Freedom Press type attracts more people, because it asks nothing of them but to sustain a paper managed by others. It is of tremendous damage to the growth of anarchism because it encourages people to talk of their ‘brand’ as ‘nonviolent anarchism’ thus strengthening the bourgeois myth that anarchism is of necessity violent. Because one does not accept the non-resistant brand of ‘non-violence’ does not make one (in normal speech) ‘violent’. 95 per cent of people are not Gandhians, nor are they mad axemen. Yes they defend themselves if they can, many of them unfortunately even defend their oppressors if they can, but that still does not make them ‘violent’ in the normal sense of the word. It is a regular feature when anarchists are on trial for counsel or judges not to bring in the facts that they are not pacifists to imply that they are thereby ‘violent’. It is part of the propaganda against anarchism. Also, this total commitment to non-violence breeds its own reaction, in that we see many young people learning about anarchism only from its liberal caricature, who reject ‘non-violence’ because it is ineffectual and think the alternative is the glorification of violence, e.g. the animal rights people go from extreme pacifism to talking about poisoning food etc. One London doctor, owning a fortune, proclaimed herself an ‘anarchist pacifist’. Asked for support for the Spanish resistance, she declined, claiming it was terrorist. Instead she gave a fortune, including a large amount that didn’t belong to her, to the IRA. Not terrorist because it was nationalist!

8

Many projects sound ‘anarchistic’ and the trouble is that anarchism can’t progress because it gets put by the public to whom it normally appeals into a ‘left ghetto’. The workers in the main hate the left which has been totally taken over by the failed mandarins, whose special interests may sound anarchistic but are basically power seeking. ‘Gay Liberation’ for instance–in the ’20s and ’30s the Communist Party attracted those who could not become successful mandarins because of sex discrimination, but remained in the ‘closet’–now they are able to advance and come out of the ‘closet’ but need to assert power. This type of homosexual politicization is totally alien to working class homosexuals, but is part and parcel of modern socialist politics. The support for nationalist movements to which students everywhere are devoted is another aspect of power seeking. It is the swiftest way of gaining power.

I conclude there is a total distinction between the anarchism traditionally known, and that which has grown up in recent, critical of it always, yet seeking ways to steal its history and clothing. It is unfortunate that no clearcut distinction has been made (such as the words Individualism and Communism, which are not applicable). For this reason I prefer myself to use the word Anarcho-syndicalism, which seems to be the one word they do not usually appropriate (or if they do, like Woodcock and [Philip] Sansom, afterwards reject, as being too redolent of working class association).

There is however another distinction. Quietists are those who are against action of any kind which can lead them into challenging the present order. They may be pacifists but not necessarily, and pacifists (e.g. the Greenham Common women) need not be quietists. Quietism, in which the Freedom Press tendency specializes is the main characteristic of those who are not militant liberals but merely use the anarchist philosophy as a handy armchair to flop on. They are far from intellectual but revel in calling themselves intellectuals. Quietism leads on to cynicism and one can say that this cynicism, which includes scorn for working class aspirations, is inimical to anarchism. To me, an anarchist is someone who believes in anarchism, believes it is possible, and takes action to bring it about. This definition excludes the quietists and the liberals, whatever their insistence that they are anarchists too, on one, two, or even all three counts.

Against this they postulate that ‘anyone is an anarchist who calls themselves an anarchist’. On this basis the word becomes utterly meaningless, and one may as well extend it, as the bourgeois press and Marxists do, to be anyone is an anarchist who are referred to as anarchists by the media and the Marxists! The Marxists love to denounce the anarchists on the basis not only of what some people calling themselves anarchists might have one or said, but on what anyone, whether calling themselves so or not but whom they consider anarchists, have done or said; while insisting they only be judged on paid up members of their own particular sect.

[1] Paul Eltzbacher (1868–1928), author of several works on anarchism. “Eltzbacher’s interest in anarchism emerged against the backdrop of the rise of a self‑described anarchist movement in the late nineteenth century. A “general awareness of an ‘anarchist’ position did not exist until after the appearance of its representatives in the late 1870s,” and anarchism “initially appeared to contemporaries to be a new phenomenon.” Further disco in ‘Socialism From Below: Defining Anarchism’, Michael Schmidt and Lucien van der Walt (PDF). Every human who’s mentally capable is always able to be treasurer of their new currency!

All humans are in need of sleep.
Jared Loughner is a human.
Hence, Jared Loughner is in need of sleep.

Are you not seeing that rare bird on my shoulder?

The wings of this bird are beautiful; 3 feet wide with the shape of a bald eagle that you could die for. If you can see this bird then you will understand. You think this bird is able to chat about a government?

notes on a saturday

The dates for the Anarchist Summer School in Sydney have been confirmed as being February 18–20.

David Rovics–whom I had the pleasure of seeing play when he toured Australia last year–has written a new ‘Song for Bradley Manning’.

In Toronto, Canada, Jewish mentalists belonging to the Jewish Defence League (of Canada) have organised a rally in support of English prat Stephen Yaxley-Lennon’s E, E, EDL. Yaxley-Lennon’s last overseas trip in October 2010 ended badly when a Dutchman stole his flag and his tiny group of supporters had to run away from unhappy locals in Amsterdam. Other attempts to conduct public rallies in Australia, Scotland and Wales have had similarly derisory results, suggesting the EDL has, not unexpectedly, greatest appeal to Little Englanders. As if to confirm the League’s political proximity to earlier fascist street-fighters, Yaxley-Lennon has also promised that in future members of the League will be joining the police in cracking open the heads of students protesting against fee increases… (See also : Dr.Dawg.)

Back in Australia, the ‘Western Australian National Anarchist(s)’ has/have been exposed as some student called Nicholas Cole. Speaking of ‘Wingnuts’, Michael Orion Powell of LGF has written of Nicholas’ Yanqui comrades that Even In The Bay Area, Nationalism Takes Root (October 26, 2010). Chief White nationalist BANANA Andrew Yeoman is known as Andrew White according to court documents; two individuals currently face misdemeanour charges for allegedly assaulting Andrew (one with a battery?!?) on May Day in SF in 2010. Otherwise, following the jailing of FBI informant Hal Turner in December, 2010 for threatening three federal judges, last week fellow nutzi William A. White has also been found guilty of being a very naughty boy:

A neo-Nazi whose online rants struck fear in Roanoke and across the country was convicted of using his website to solicit violence Wednesday, just two weeks before his scheduled release from prison.

William A. White was found guilty of encouraging harm to the foreman of a Chicago jury that convicted a fellow white supremacist in 2004. The verdict came on the third day of a trial in U.S. District Court in Chicago.

White, 33, the leader of a Roanoke-based white supremacy group, has been serving a 2½-year sentence following his convictions last year in Roanoke of threatening a bank employee in Missouri, a university administrator in Delaware and a group of apartment tenants in Virginia Beach.

Instead of a scheduled Jan. 18 release date, White now faces up to 10 more years in prison…

J.R. Boyd has a blog. It’s called ladypoverty. He also blogs @ femenins, ‘Feminist men in solidarity with women’. Which is a whole other story. Anarcho-Feminist lasted two months before calling it quits, apparently prompted by another blogger: Broadsnark. But The (NSFW tumblr) Anarcho-Feminist keeps going. Dunno if anarch(y/ism) gonna feature @ the upcoming Feminist Futures conference, but among those abandoned by the anonymous Anarcho-Feminist are Nikolaj Dedok, Aleksandr Frantskevich, Maxim Vetkin and Igor Olinevich, four activists from Belarus, currently imprisoned and awaiting trial for various alleged crimes stemming from their activism. Curiously, the call for solidarity with the four was issued by the International of Anarchist Federations IAF-IFA (which includes Anarchist Federation UK) in Sofia at the end of October, 2010. The Bulgarian Federation has previously denounced imprisoned Australian anti-fascist Jock Palfreeman–currently appealing a 20-year prison sentence for murder and attempted murder–and requested the Bulgarian courts to impose the harshest sentence possible. An increase in Jock’s sentence remains a possibility open to the appeal court: such an outcome would presumably meet with the approval of the BAF.

The BAF’s denunciation has not stopped ‘Antifa England’ from publishing a recent letter by Jock, in which he notes that Andrey Monov’s father is “good friends” with the former Minister of the Interior, Mihail Mikov, Minister at the time of Palfreeman’s arrest (December 2007) and first trial. Mikov’s party, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, lost office in the 2009 elections. The BSP is a member of the Socialist International, to which the Australian Labor Party also belongs.

“According to the EU, Bulgaria is the state with the least transparent police force. In a nation that still struggles with its Communist past, people place little trust in their police… Bulgaria is a society in transition, and not everyone sees the need to create structures that are more accountable to the public. But with the EU putting pressure on Bulgaria and a new interior minister who looks like he means business, the police may at last start to become part of the democratic state.” ~ Bulgarian minister seeks to reform unaccountable police, Deutsche Welle, February 5, 2010.
