Hate or Confusion? Facebook, Geller, Online Hate Prevention Institute …

On October 14 there was a small protest (about 15 people according to ABC-KGO) outside Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California, U$A.

“The protest, according to organizer Michael Mendelson, was sparked by Facebook’s refusal to remove anti-Semitic hate pages aimed primarily at Jews, Jewish Americans and supporters of Israel.”

Mendelson is responsible for establishing a Facebook page called ‘Help Report Hate & Anti-Semitic Pages’.

The Sydney-based Online Hate Prevention Institute helped to publicise the event and gave it its support, and so too did US blogger Pamela Geller, whom protest organisers describe as one of its ‘sponsors’.

In June 2013, Geller and Robert Spencer were banned by the British Home Office from entering the UK, where the pair were to address an English Defence League rally, on the grounds that they were likely to ‘mak[e] statements which may “foster hatred” and lead to “inter-community violence” in the UK’. The EDL’s leader, Tommy Robinson aka Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, quit the group just last week, claiming that it had been hijacked by extremists, including neo-Nazis.

What a funny olde worlde.

Cheeky Brazilian anarchists promise to disrupt ‘absurd’ World Cup [The Times]

[*Teachers in Brazil have been on strike. In Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday last week ‘Anarchist groups smashed banks and burnt a bus, while “Black Block” protesters threw firebombs at the police, who responded with teargas, rubber bullets and percussion grenades’ (Grauniad). The teachers’ union has reportedly declared support for the bloc.]

Anarchists promise to disrupt ‘absurd’ World Cup
James Hider in Sao Paulo
The Times
October 14, 2013

BRAZILIAN anarchists, who form part of the global anti-capitalist movement, have pledged to target next year’s World Cup.

The group says the event is an extravagant waste of money in a country where millions live in poverty.

In an interview with The Times, a member of the Black Bloc anarchist group [sic] said: “FIFA lies to us, it is all money laundering. The people get nothing out of it. They’ve spent millions on stadiums and have a law saying they don’t have to disclose how much they spend. FIFA will rule this country for the time of the World Cup.”

The 26-year-old heavily-tattooed black-clad anarchist, who asked not to be identified, said: “The World Cup is absurd. It will be a focus for us and we will fight it.”

Brazil is under intense scrutiny to show that it is able to contain mounting social unrest as it tries to organise two of the world’s most watched sporting events – a football World Cup next year and the Olympics, in Rio, in 2016. It is already far behind schedule in building the stadiums and infrastructure required for next year’s event.

Last week, Black Bloc, whose origins [kinda] lie in the European anarchist movement, shot to prominence in Rio and Sao Paulo when dozens of their number attacked banks, buses and shops after a demonstration by striking teachers descended into clashes with the police.

Wearing black clothing, crash helmets, gas masks and scarves round their faces, they set fire to banks, sprayed anti-World Cup grafitti on the walls of damaged buildings and handed out leaflets saying: “Relax people. It’s us, the Black Bloc. What you can’t do, we can. We don’t just attack, we defend people against police abuse and defend our right to protest.”

Political analysts believe that while many Brazilians deplore the violence, their disillusionment with the police and systemic corruption is fuelling support for the protesters and the anarchists who champion them.

The member of Black Bloc claimed that the principal role of the activists was to protect protesters calling for social change from police onslaughts.

“We are growing,” he said, his clothes adorned with the names of punk banks. “Before, it was a small punk group from the underground culture, but now people from other social groups are coming along. Upper-middle class kids are agreeing with us. Young people have more destructive energy and see it as a way to express themselves.” He said social media groups that helped them to organise themselves were infiltrated by police informers during the summer protests.

Black Bloc spontaneously present themselves at left-wing demonstrations, such as last week’s teachers’ strike, and confront the police. Armed with gas masks and plastic shields, they say they want to help legitimate protesters to be heard.

“Our goal is protection. We know the police are better equipped, with rubber bullets and teargas, which they often fire in large quantities,” he said. “But if we stand our ground, the people will stay and the protest will go on.”

The authorities’ response has been to flood the streets with police, gendarmes and even the army: when the Pope visited Rio in June after protesters disrupted the Confederations Cup, more than 10,000 security personnel lined the streets.

Rafael Alcadipani, a professor of organisation theory at the university of Sao Paulo who has studied Black Bloc, said that with a murder rate of 40,000 a year fewer than 10 per cent of which are solved Brazilians believe the police have other priorities than “people breaking windows with stones”.

“The more aggressive and violent the police are, the more they will fuel protests,” he said. “My guess is that they will try to stop a match of the World Cup, which will be big news. Brazilians are crazy about football but the majority of them can’t afford a ticket … it’s a tournament for the rich and people are upset about this.”

Blood & Honour/Combat-18 re-emerge in Australia…?

…or, in recent months, a handful of boneheads in Perth and Melbourne have been slapping up stickers promoting B&H/C18 LOL. (See also : Volksfront Australia : Back With A Bang!, October 10, 2013.) Thus today I received a photo of some stickers stuck outside Ascot Vale train station (Ascot Vale is an inner northern suburb of Melbourne):

Blood & Honour / Combat 18 (Ascot Vale)

The orange sticker is the same sticker that appeared in Perth six months ago:

Perth Blood & Honour / Combat-18

The sticker provides a website, email address and mobile number. The website address is for the Blood & Honour website.

Currently, five men have been charged with criminal damage for distroing the stickers in Perth:

The last time B&H/C18 made it into the news in Australia was a few years ago when Perth bonehead Bradley Trappitt (below, far right) was convicted along with two other boneheads of being naughty boys and playing with guns in the vicinity of a mosque. Trappitt has since come under the wing of Sydney-based Welf Herfurth, the leader of a small group of fascist activists variously parading under the banner of the New Right/’national anarchism’. The last of this mob’s excitingly irregular public performances was at a November 2012 rally against an Israeli attack on Gaza. (Note that, in a related case, a former WA police officer named Robert Critchley was acquitted late last year of the charge that he had provided the boneheads with information regarding police investigations into bonehead activity in Perth.)

The B&H site which the stickers promote is an entity (B&H/C18) distinct from the B&H associated with a bonehead gang called the (Southern Cross) Hammerskins. In Australia (if not, say, in Russia), the Hammerskin-aligned B&H is a much more popular and well-established neo-Nazi organising tool, having operated successfully for 20 years in the country and holding regular gigs in Melbourne and a number of other cities including Adelaide, Sydney and most recently on the Gold Coast. The split between the two wings dates back to the years immediately following the death of the founder of B&H, Ian Stuart Donaldson, with the wing aligned to Combat-18 (where 1 = A, 8 = H and AH = Adolf Hitler) more openly committed to political violence against its opponents. (For more infos, see : Blood and Honour vs. Blood and Honour, April 12, 2009.)

On a slightly concerning note, in December last year Ascot Vale was the site of a particularly nasty assault upon a young Vietnamese student.

Minh Duong was walking home from his job in Ascot Vale in June when he was set upon by Shannon Hudson, 21 and Wayne O’Brien, 20, both of Ascot Vale.

Mr Duong was kicked and punched repeatedly before being stabbed and having a brick dropped on his head.

The boys responsible for the assault fancied themselves Little Hitlers, and are part of a small, very loose network of nazi yoof in the northern suburbs of Melbourne — tho’ the precise connections between the various elements that comprise the milieu are rarely, if ever, made public knowledge.

wow. notes on the deeply racist bad feminist Lorde. like, wow.

blah blah blah — so a blogger in the us has argued, rather poorly, that lorde’s song ‘royals’ is “deeply racist”. i can find very few, if any, who agree with her, but whatever. she concludes her post on the following rather ungenerous note:– “let’s just hope [lorde’s] feminism gets a lot less racist as she develops as an artist”.

yeah well, fingers xed eh.

anyway, the CONTROVERSIAL! article by verónica bayetti flores was posted on the feministing site on october 3 but it was scooped by another post by a philosophy teacher named robin james from north carolina, posted on september 18. the september post has received nowhere near the attention the october post done. both condemn lorde for being a racist: in flores’ words, ‘shitting on black folks and rappers’; in james’ case ‘articulating a specific kind of anti-black racism in a way that clearly illustrates the role of white femininity in multi-racial white supremacist patriarchy’ (the professor’s post contains some incredible riffing). why racist? mostly ’cause lorde made the mistake of referring to “gold teeth, Cristal and Maybachs” in her lyrics … and we all know what that means right? *nudge nudge, wink wink*

finally, no big deal, but i thought it was curious that the feministing post makes no ref to the previous, though both writers think the alleged racism in the song is wow

wowee zowee.

Greg SPIRAL OBJECTIVE Loses Record Collection To Fire …

Very sad … I remember encountering Greg/Spiral Objective mail order sometime in the early ’90s thru an ad in the Green Left Weekly(!). Thru his distro (and label: 1991–2000) he helped introduce me and countless others to a world of punk and hardcore musick, firmly rooted in a commitment to social justice and solidarity with a range of local and global projects.

The fire that destroyed the Black Cockatoo Arthouse (Park St, McLaren Vale, South Australia) and which housed Greg’s collection took place in early September but I only read about it now via Rest Assured zine …

(Details on how you can help Greg and Black Cockatoo Arthouse get back up on their feet are available via Rest Assured.)

Volksfront Australia : Back With A Bang!

Huh.

On white supremacist forum Stormfront, bonehead Chris Smith has announced the reformation of Volksfront, the neo-Nazi skinhead gang originally formed in the US in 1994, and established in Australia about a decade later.* The development is curious as Volksfront in the US announced its dissolution just over a year ago, in circumstances which remain somewhat obscure, but may be connected to the mass murder by neo-Nazi skinhead Wade Michael Page in August, and increased attention from the US government. Rose City Antifa:

believe that the announced dissolution of Volksfront should be treated with some caution: Volksfront has auto-dissolved once before, in 1998, when members of Volksfront in Portland including Krager were under increased police scrutiny and decided to take apart Volksfront as an above-ground organization. Volksfront then publicly resurfaced in 2001 after three years underground. Randal Krager also made a December 2004 announcement that he had given up leadership of the organization, but was soon enough back as the head of Volksfront. The latest Volksfront announcement may therefore mainly be made out of political convenience. It is possible that key Volksfront activists will continue to work as an underground network, as there is precedent for this in the organization’s history.

Note that prior to this point, VF has operated only in NSW, and a gentleman’s agreement has existed between it and the boneheads belonging to the Southern Cross Hammerskins, restricting VF’s activities to that state. Presumably, the two gangs have arrived at a new understanding. (Smith runs the Anti-Antifa Australia blog and distributes neo-Nazi propaganda via the Heathen Noise website.) Otherwise, VF has worked in close cooperation with Welf Herfurth’s ‘national anarchist’/New Right groupuscule in Sydney, and these ties would appear to remain fairly strong.

Sado-workism: the new culture of work in Australia [Boris Frankel]

Gillard snubs UN on single parent welfare, The Australian (AAP), March 4, 2013 | PM’s pay to crack $500k as part of MP salary rise, Stephanie Peatling, The Sydney Morning Herald, June 13, 2013.

Former prime minister Julia Gillard defended her controversial changes which moved single parents off their pension and on to the unemployment benefit Newstart, but she accepted Newstart was “too low”.

“I am going to stand up for it as a decision of the government I led,” she told journalist Anne Summers in Melbourne on Tuesday night.

It was the second major interview Gillard had done in as many days explaining her prime ministership, its policies, her leadership battles with Kevin Rudd and issues around gender. Summers also interviewed her in Sydney on Monday night. Both sellout audiences were overwhelmingly supportive and mostly women.

~ Julia Gillard defends single parent benefit change, Gabrielle Chan, The Grauniad, October 1, 2013

Sado-workism: the new culture of work in Australia: since the late 1970s, Australia has witnessed the reinvigoration of a type of sadism in the workplace as decision-makers have restructured key socioeconomic and cultural institutions and practices.

There are important moments in history when people say ‘fuck work’ and assert their right to be lazy. The late twentieth [?] century French anarchists understood this well. They were combating the tyrannies of the new factory system and the deification by the church and state of labourers who toiled 15 hours a day for their masters. The growing parliamentary socialist movement also tried to gain respectability by creating an image of the working man as an upright, hardworking family man who obeyed the law and never beat his wife. In response, the anarchist Elisée Reclus proclaimed:

He who commands becomes depraved, he who obeys becomes smaller. Either way, as tyrant or slave, as an officer or as an underling, man is diminished. The morality which is born out of the present conception of the state and social hierarchy is necessarily corrupt. Religions have taught us that the fear of god is the beginning of wisdom, whereas history tells us that it is the beginning of all servitude and all depravity.

Shortly after, the French Socialist Albert Metin visited Australia to observe not anarchism but the new ‘working man’s paradise’. What has changed since Metin’s visit? Certainly not wage slavery. This remains the fate of most Australian employees. However, because of unemployment, today’s anally retentive employers are less likely to hear their workers tell them to ‘stick their job up their …’. Compared with before the 1980s, hours lost to strikes have also plummeted dramatically. For example, in 1994 there were 560 industrial disputes, the lowest number since 1940. A decade later, in 2003, there were 642 disputes; although this was 82 more than in 1994, this was still a very low number compared with the 2000 to 2800 industrial disputes each year between 1969 and 1976. It is not that more strikes are good in themselves; rather, they are a barometer of a whole range of aspects of industrial relations–from how organised workers are to the harmoniousness of workplaces to the general political climate (hostile or sympathetic towards striking). Australians’ working hours per week and hours of unpaid overtime are now among the highest in the OECD. Over a quarter of the workforce works more than fifty hours per week and 64 per cent of employees work either on weekends or at night. Also, according to the Job Futures/Saulwick Employee Sentiment Survey of 2002, 47 per cent of full-time employees work an average of 7.9 hours unpaid each week.

Much more, however, is at stake than mere numbers of hours worked. The workplace of paid employment is the last frontier. Significant numbers of households –though still a minority–have, in recent decades, undergone limited democratisation in terms of the sharing of tasks and decision making. In contrast, the sphere of paid work has gone backwards. It is the citadel of sadomasochism. While gender, race and other cultural signifiers remain important, paid work is perhaps the primary definer of social identity, social power, income and meaning. Everything else in Australian culture–children, art, community and love–is now secondary. For example, a recent report by Ruth Weston and colleagues on fathers, long working hours and family wellbeing found that only 33.2 per cent of the full-time employed fathers worked 35 to 40 hours (‘standard’ hours), while 21.8 per cent worked 41 to 48 hours, 23.6 per cent worked 49 to 59 hours, and 21.4 per cent worked 60 hours or more. Meek policy proposals for ‘family friendly’ workplaces are feeble substitutes for the radical questioning of the role and place of work that was common in earlier years, and is more desperately needed now.

For decades, radical socialists, anarchists and feminists were the principal critics of work in capitalist societies. After all, the sadistic heart of capitalism–money capital–cannot beat without labour power, both past and present. The labour of previous workers is stored in the machinery, buildings, commodities and infrastructure of capitalism which they helped make. Dead labour now dominates living labour as business people increasingly dispense with their workers and turn instead to the gifts of dead labour–technology. What Marx saw happening in the 19th century capitalist use of machinery was elementary compared with recent developments. A truly dramatic phenomenon is currently underway: whenever it is cost-effective and possible (in terms of production and customer relations), businesses are expelling living workers and replacing them with ‘dead labour’ (that is, new technology) or part-time labour. The great transition from labour-intensive workplaces to capital- or technology-intensive enterprises is only in its initial stages.

antifa notes (september 26, 2013) : Lakota grandmothers, Craig Cobb, Martin Fletcher, Paul Innes, Golden Dawn yadda yadda yadda

Well I was simply going to post some blah on Facebook but then I remembered I had a blog and then I thought hey why not post the blah here?

So …

Mark Zuckerberg asks ‘What have you been up to?’

And the answer is, inter alia, I’ve been laffing at a photo of antifa grandmas in North Dakota (US). Here they’re pictured with a flag they ‘captured’ and subsequently burned.

The flag was taken in Leith, ND, where a handful of nazis are trying (against opposition) to establish what’s sometimes termed a ‘Pioneer Little Europe’: basically, a White enclave. Spearheading the effort is a Canuckistanian nazi named Craig Cobb. Cobb was previously responsible for publishing a website called podblanc (founded in April 2007). Since closed, it featured all the usual nazi shite you’d expect, most notoriously, perhaps, a gruesome video titled ‘Execution of a Tajik and a Dagestani’, which documented the murder of two men by a neo-Nazi gang in Russia. (Also involved in the project is the National Socialist Movement, an outfit of Hollywood Nazis whose sole Australian representative was once Carl D Thompson, a former editor of the One Nation newspaper.)

Curiously, podblanc was once heavily promoted, along with a range of other racist, fascist, White supremacist and neo-Nazi propaganda materials, by a local (Sydney-based) White supremacist named Martin Fletcher on his website Down Under Newslinks (aka ‘Australian Nationalist Resource’: “Tracking Non-White Crime and Events Affected by Immigration”). In the intervening years Martin has removed much of this material from his site, and is currently the ‘Vice Chairman and Website Administrator’ for the Australian version of the ‘Party for Freedom’, an anti-Muslim micro-party modelled on Geert Wilder’s Dutch example. Like a number of others who’ve made the transition from blaming The Jew to blaming The Muslim for all of the world’s many problems, Martin has yet to give a satisfactory account of why he found Nazism so appealing.

Another Australian identity associated with Cobb’s project in North Dakota is Paul Innes. For several years Paul was the moderator of the ‘Down Under’ segment of Stormfront, the world’s leading site for White supremacist ideology; currently, moderating duties are shared between the (Melbourne-based) leader of the neo-Nazi groupuscule Nationalist Alternative and some other bloke. Innes got a little police and media attention back in early 2009 for his plans to establish a ‘Pioneer Little Europe’ in the Perth foothills. More recently, police have charged several Perth men for distributing nazi stickers.

Finally, Dr Cam and I have interviewed an anti-fascist activist about the activities of Golden Dawn in Greece (Athens) and Australia (Melbourne); the interview will be broadcast tomorrow on 3CR at 5.30pm.
