About @ndy

I live in Melbourne, Australia. I like anarchy. I don't like nazis. I enjoy eating pizza and drinking beer. I barrack for the greatest football team on Earth: Collingwood Magpies. The 2024 premiership's a cakewalk for the good old Collingwood.

    Thanks Kieran.

Interesting to note that one antifa (‘Godzilla the Desructor’) refers to the important role lawyers play in mediations with the state. Stanislav Markelov was too successful in this role, so they had him killed. The same is true of journalists…

3 men acquitted in murder of Russian journalist
    Ellen Barry and Michael Schwirtz
    International Herald Tribune
    February 19, 2009

A Moscow jury ruled unanimously on Thursday to acquit three men in the 2006 murder of the investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, frustrating state prosecutors’ hopes of putting to rest a case that cast a shadow over Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

Politkovskaya was a strident critic of the Kremlin, and her killing in 2006 underlined the shrinking freedom allowed dissenters in Russian society. Investigators and colleagues concluded that someone had ordered her death to silence her, and some suspected the hand of state officials in the crime.

But the three men who were tried on murder charges in a cramped courtroom this winter were peripheral figures: two shaggy-haired young Chechen brothers accused of acting as a lookout and a driver for the suspected triggerman, who has never been arrested, and a former police investigator accused of organizing logistics for the killing.

By skirting the single most important question — who ordered the killing of Politkovskaya — the proceedings made the case more corrosive.

“If the decision had been otherwise, it would mean that the real criminals, who are somewhere among us, could continue what they were doing,” said Murad Musayev, the lawyer defending Dzhabrail Makhmudov, one of the Chechen brothers. “The only way to stop these crimes is to find the real criminals.”

  4. The doco raised some interesting questions about the legitimacy of violence in response to nutzi organisation.

Thankfully here in Australia we seem to be blessed with the world’s most incompetent nutzis, we don’t yet need to consider much more than “name and shame”… (or so I naively hope).

Btw, an uber-trot at the ANU, Rick Kuhn, runs a course entitled “Fascism and Anti-Fascism”, I sent him the link. Hope you don’t mind.

  5. @ndy says:

Australian neo-Nazis have never been able to gather significant levels of support, and Australia has not produced a fascist movement of any kind to compare with movements in Europe. The most significant recent expression of far right populism was Hansonism; unlike a similar development in Austria, Hansonism imploded under its own ideological and political contradictions (whereas Haider & Co. managed to survive and even grow). The nature of the Australian electoral system has also played a role in limiting the ability of third parties to penetrate government, a vantage point from which such forces might be able to gather together resources of a kind otherwise unavailable to them (especially in the absence of a maverick philanthropist of some sort). What violence has been attached to the far right in Australia has been episodic, and often confined to attacks upon internal enemies. So: in the absence of any real street presence, no counter-presence has been generated, and the question of ‘violence’ made largely redundant. The degree of political incompetency shared by its putative leadership is obviously an important factor in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of and political prospects for fascist movements and parties, but despite Australia having an historical commitment to white supremacy, in other ways they’re scratching at some barren soil.

Regarding the question of violence, in the Russian context, it appears evident that, especially given the attitude of the Russian state, its use is mandatory even for mere survival. Beyond this, the question of ‘violence’, its use, and its effects, is as I see it, quite complicated.
