“Wats up u black dogs ya mate jst got knocked da fuck out we jst jacked him welcome 2 australia u jigaboo fucks melton blood gang we from melton u peices of shit”

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. But No, that’s not Kevin Andrews, and ‘melton blood gang’ is not a new, ‘hip’ term for the Young Liberals — it’s a youth from Melton with a somewhat, ah, unusual interpretation of the area’s “unique and diverse mix of urban and rural lifestyle choices” providing a “vibrant, proud, growing and healthy community offering lifestyle choices”; in this case, being a violent racist psychotic (see Dan Oakes and Dewi Cooke, Community’s anger spills over, The Age, October 11, 2007). But speaking of violent racist psychotics

Ian Stuart Donaldson Memorial Gig, Melbourne, Saturday, October 13, 2007

Tomorrow, on Saturday October 13, Melbourne — not Melton — will be the location for a gathering of between 1-200 neo-Nazi skinheads, here to commemorate — as they do annually in this multicultural city — the death, in 1993, of the founder of one of the world’s leading international neo-Nazi networks: Blood & Honour. (The name, incidentally, is taken from the Hitler Youth, and their use of the motto “Blut und Ehre”.) Joining them in organising the knees-up are the Southern Cross Hammerskins, the local branch of another international neo-Nazi network, with a possibly even bloodier history than Blood & Honour, and which celebrated its twentieth anniversary last weekend in Portland, Oregon.

Unlike Melbourne, the corporate/state media in Portland managed to report the fact that a large neo-Nazi gathering was to take place in the city, reportage beginning some weeks before the event itself. Further, the corporate/state media also reported on its disruption, and the withdrawal of the use of the location for the celebrations by its owners, a local Elks club. By contrast, and despite some small degree of protest, the hosts of last year’s Ian Stuart Donaldson memorial gig — The Birmingham Hotel in Fitzroy — remains largely unaffected by its role in providing a venue for neo-Nazis; and even despite the fact that a local black woman was assaulted on the night of the gig, racially abused, and forced to call herself — not a ‘black dog’ or a ‘jigaboo’ — but a ‘black cunt’.

Still, who cares eh? She obviously wasn’t integrated.

As for the gig itself, it will star four bands, and one surprise guest from overseas. The bands are:

1) FORTRESS : Fortress is a local band, for neo-Nazis the world over. Formed c.1991, and rarely performing after 1999, Fortress is easily Australia’s most significant and well-known contribution to the genre of neo-Nazi muzak otherwise known as RAC (’Rock Against Communism’), and the success of its peculiar brand of B-grade metal is largely a result of the efforts of one person: Scott McGuinness. Despite being based in Melbourne, it’s played very few gigs here during its lifetime, and attracted its largest audiences among neo-Nazis overseas, especially in Germany, where it played to crowds of thousands. The main drawcard for the event, tomorrow’s performance is allegedly the band’s last ever. Among the many songs celebrating Hitler, Nazism, white racial supremacy and the Holocaust, the band has written a tender-hearted tribute to Australia’s non-white residents, called ‘Parasites’:

Reject an alien government, don’t recognise their laws
It’s time to close the floodgates, it’s time to shut the door
Repatriate, ship ’em out, send the bastards back
If they don’t fucking like it, it’ll be in body bags

    Get out!

(NB. Rumours that McGuinness is one of the ‘very senior’ people Andrews relies on for advice regarding the inability of Africans to ‘integrate’ into Australian society is unconfirmed at this stage. You can sample some of Skrewdriver’s muzak on YouTube, where a local bonehead, James Newman — likely to be in attendance at Saturday’s event — has used one of their songs as a soundtrack to footage of the Cronulla pogrom in December, 2005. Fortress, on the other hand, sing the praises of dead loser Rudolf Hess here.)

2) QUICK AND THE DEAD : While Fortress may be Australia’s leading neo-Nazi export, Quick and the Dead was certainly the earliest. It’s reformed for this year’s ISD gig, but originally came together in Perth in 1981. Back then (and tomorrow also, presumably) it featured the now almost 50 year-old bass player Murray Holmes, a man who has the dubious distinction of actually having shared a stage, alongside another Aussie, Adam Douglas, with the Skrewydriver himself, Ian Stuart. In its heyday, the band was notorious for gathering together large numbers of racist skinheads — sometimes hundreds — and violently attacking others in Perth. They also helped to conduct violent campaigns against anti-racist activists. You can view an old (kinda funny) tabloid TV documentary on the band on YouTube.

3) BAIL UP! : Bail Up! is another local, Melbourne band, who most recently played a gig in July in Adelaide, also organised by B&H and the SCHS. Previously, it’s played a number of ISD memorial gigs (at The Birmy) as well as at other gigs alongside other bands, including local band Bulldog Spirit. Three years ago, the lead shouter, Damien Ovchynik, got his back in The Age, while attempting — successfully, if only for a brief time — to set a new World Record for the longest single tattooing session:

…Ovchynik, 25, is the ideal candidate to go the distance because he has an impressive threshold for pain – his ability to endure five hours of tattooing on his shinbone is the stuff of legend. Mr Ovchynik, whose body has 60 per cent tatt coverage, says people call him a freak because of his stoicism under the needle. His reward for this weekend’s session: portraits on his arms and legs of dead friends, and a Sydney streetscape. All Mr Ovchynik’s tattoos hold special meaning, so Prime Minister John HoWARd would gush with [white] pride if he knew Mr Ovchynik has the Australian flag on his leg, forever attesting to his allegiance…

~ Suzanne Carbone, Beans means 40 hours of fancy needlework, June 26, 2004

Hurr hurr. Note that the tattooist, Greg “Beans” Hines, has his studio in Melton. Finally, here’s a photo of Damien, singing his heart out at the 2005 ISD memorial gig (also held at The Birmy):

4) PARTS UNKNOWN, WEIGHT UNKNOWN : The organisers of this year’s gig have also promised that a prominent neo-Nazi band from the UK or the US will be playing, but haven’t announced any further details for fear that doing so might jeopardise their ability to play. In 2004, local neo-Nazis arranged for a band from Texas called the Bully Boys to play. A local enthusiast describes their performance as follows:

Next was the band that we had all been waiting to see and we weren’t disappointed!! The Bully Boys!! They played an awesome set, with tunes like Jigrun and Fire Up the Ovens. A few of the lads had gotten hold of some Jew’s yarmulke and took a light to it and handed it to Scott while he was singing Six Million More! Seeing that burn to the tune of that song was brilliant. What a showman!

In 1990, drummer Sean Tarrant was one of several Confederate Hammerskins sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to civil rights convictions for involvement in the vandalization of a mosque and a Jewish community center in Dallas, and chasing and assaulting minorities in a park. Their current lead vocalist, Scott, has also spent time in jail on assault charges.

Note that both Blood & Honour and the Hammerskins have a history of racist violence, including murder. And speaking of murder:

Neo-Nazi Rampage in Moscow
UCSJ
October 10, 2007

Neo-Nazis injured four and killed one person in Moscow on Saturday, according to an October 9, 2007 article in the national daily Komsomolskaya Pravda. The first victims were two Tajiks, whom police found bleeding on the ground and unconscious on Vostrykovsky Proezd. They were suffering from multiple stab wounds. One of the victims — 22 year old Ikhtier Istamzad — told police at the emergency room that seven men had attacked them.

Later that evening, a group of young men stabbed three Azeris in the same part of town; one of the victims died as a result. Police sources told the newspaper that the attack was recorded on video and that they believe the assailants were returning from a rock concert.

In the context of the recent murder of a Sudanese youth, Liep Gony, allegedly by two whitefellas from Adelaide, the racial assault on another Sudanese youth by other whitefellas, as well as the recent upsurge in anti-Semtic incidents in Melbourne, you’d think that a large gathering of neo-Nazi skinheads organised by two of the world’s leading international neo-Nazi networks would merit some further attention outside of this blog.

it’s funny ‘cos it’s true

One-Nil by Mouth : Is it ever wrong to hit a bigot?
Steven Wells
Philadelphia Weekly
October 10, 2007

If you didn’t watch the semifinal of the women’s soccer World Cup between hot favorites the U.S. and plucky Third World underdogs Brazil, you don’t know dick about sports. Seriously, take a break now and go type “Marta” into YouTube and then come back.

See what I mean? On at least two occasions the 21-year-old striker Marta tore apart the U.S. defense with moves that seemed to defy physics. (For non-soccer heads, Michael Jordan might serve as a point of comparison. And that’s flattering the big guy.)

Another soccer player you might not have heard of is Eric Cantona, a brilliant French midfielder. Cantona’s defining moment came when he reacted to a fan shouting, “Fuck off back to France, you French motherfucker!” by attempting to drop-kick the swine in the chest and then punch his head off.

The media were outraged. “You would have thought that the pope had been gang-raped by aliens,” wrote [right-wing] libertarian soccer writer Duleep Allirajah [a/k/a Joe White; Duleep is one of the bizarros associated with the RCP/LM/spiked! online].

But when it turned out the abusive fan had attended neo-Nazi rallies and had been convicted of attacking a Sri Lankan-born immigrant with a 3-foot spanner, all right-thinking people applauded Cantona as an anti-racist hero.

“It’s very ironic that it took a white Frenchman to bring home to the nation the issue of racism in football,” said black British soccer player John Barnes.

And then in the 2006 World Cup final, French captain (and footballing genius) Zinedine Zidane, a child of North African immigrants, reacted to what was allegedly racist abuse from an Italian player [Marco Materazzi] by headbutting him. When Zidane arrived home he was met by thousands of fans who greeted him as a hero, chanting, “Zizou, Zizou!”

In light of all the cheeseparing piffle written about the Jena Six by liberal journalists apparently attempting to equate resistance to racism with the racism itself, I have to ask: Is it ever morally wrong to hit a racist?

If Jackie Robinson, during his first game with the Dodgers, had reacted to racist abuse by taking his bat and smacking some bigoted scumbag in the face, would that have made him the moral equivalent of the racist? Would it hell.

The legendary music journalist Lester Bangs once wrote about the casual racism of the mid-’70s New York punk scene. You guys have every right to go around spewing racism, he concluded, but no right to whine when some black guy walks up and smacks you in the mouth.

return of the son of more antifa stuff…

Support Antifa! is an ace new site with a grouse aim:

‘Support Antifa!’ has been set up to help provide financial assistance to anti-fascist groups and individuals in need. 100% of all funds raised by ‘Support Antifa!’ will go directly to aid those who fight against fascism. We believe in mutual support and mutual solidarity and, more importantly, we believe in putting our money where our collective mouth is.

In Germany, the boneheads who attacked a group of actors ‘cos they was dressed like punky lefties (they’d actually been appearing in a production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show!) have gone on trial:

THEATER GROUP ASSAULT CASE : German Neo-Nazi Confesses to Brutal Attack
Spiegel Online
October 9, 2007

Four German neo-Nazis have gone on trial charged with assault for beating up a group of actors in the eastern town of Halberstadt in June. The case has prompted heavy criticism of the police and has once again highlighted the problem of far-right violence in eastern Germany…

The theater group had just finished a performance of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” in the nearby town of Quedlinburg and one of the actors had a punk hairstyle in keeping with his role. Their apparent “left-wing appearance” appears to have been enough to provoke the neo-Nazis they came across while walking through Halberstadt at around three o’clock in the morning.

Eight men — most of them in black clothes and with shorn heads — ambushed them, punching them and kicking them on the ground. They kept on kicking the victims even while they were lying on the ground, bleeding and sobbing. “They kicked their heads as if they were footballs,” one witness told SPIEGEL ONLINE.

The state of Saxony-Anhalt, where Halbersstadt is located, has the highest number of far-right assaults in Germany on a per capita basis — 4.49 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The assault was witnessed by a number of people — doormen, taxi drivers, passers-by. None of them called the police. The only emergency call on record was made by one of the victims.

Pffft, like Gary Birmy says: “I’m not getting involved in someone else’s bullshit.”

Speaking of bullshit, the Hammerskins’ 20th anniversary celebrations spring to mind. And the Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism & Fascism has issued a press release, thanking the boneheads for being… well… boneheads. (Note that the Hammerskins, predictably, claim that the event was an unmitigated triumph, and that being rumbled by the mighty power of the Elks was all part of the plan…)

“Hammerskin Nation” Neo-Nazi Event Gets Cut Short

Thanks to their eyes and ears in Portland and beyond, anti-fascists were able to release information about the location of a white supremacist gathering held on Saturday, October 6 in the greater Portland area, leading to the cancellation of its venue. White supremacists associated with the Hammerskin Nation, a neo-Nazi organization, had rented the Sherwood Elks Lodge (22770 SW Elwert Rd., Sherwood, OR) under false pretexts, for use in its twentieth-anniversary celebration, scheduled for October 5 – 7. Around three hours after receiving information about the true nature of the event being held on their premises, the Elks Club pulled the Saturday venue, denying use of their space to fascist organizers. Approximately 70 – 100 hardcore white supremacists were at the venue at the time of cancellation…

And finally, in very late-breaking news, in Belarus, a group of 50 or so organised a demo outside of the Russian Embassy in Minsk on the afternoon of Saturday, August 7, in solidarity with Russian antifa. The action was illegal, and brief, lasting no more than five minutes and involving the unveiling of an antifa banner and carrying the portraits of four antifa murdered in Russia (Timur Kacharava, Alexander Ryukhin, Stanislav Korepanov* and Ilya Borodaenko). Police soon attended the demo, and upon arrival immediately called OMON (riot police). Four antifa were arrested, and all were sentenced to 3 days imprisonment before a kangaroo court…

    * Russian antifa activist, Stanislav Korepanov, 18, died in hospital on March 31, 2007, having been attacked a few days earlier by an armed gang of neo-Nazis. The attack on Stanislav was preceded by another attack on January 14, 2007 on vegan animal rights activist, Ivan Yelin, who was surrounded and attacked by ten neo-Nazis in St. Petersburg after having taken part in a weekly “Food not Bombs” peace rally. Ivan suffered 21 stab wounds and was rushed to hospital… Following on from the knife attack on Ivan, on February 4, a small bomb exploded in Vladimirskaya Square in St. Petersburg, near to where Food Not Bombs organise their weekly protests. The bomb was hidden in a kiosk selling flowers. Luckily the bomb only damaged the kiosk and did not injure anyone. Further attacks against antifa took place in July in St Petersburg, when a 16 year old on his way to an antifa benefit was assaulted by a group of 8–10 men, and then again when a group of 20 neo-Nazis assaulted a FNB group and injured a 13 year old boy.

Russian neo-Nazis have a record of using knives and explosives to target Russian activists. On December 22, 2006 a number of police were injured whilst trying to defuse a device, set to murder antifa activists in Moscow. In August 2006, eleven people were killed in Moscow when a neo-Nazi bomb exploded in Cherkisovski marketplace.

Portland History in Review: A Hundred Little Hitlers (Elinor Langer, Metropolitan Books, 2003)

I

At the end of a recent forum in Portland on Elinor Langer’s important new book on the rise of neo-fascist groups in the U.S., A Hundred Little Hitlers, someone in the audience rose and asked an embarrassing question. The panel, which was assembled by the Oregon Council [for the] Humanities, was full of heavy hitters. Four white guys, including the President of Reed College and an editor of the Oregonian, a historian and somebody whose title I’ve forgotten, were suited up and ready to take on questions of evil and racism. Langer and Kathleen Sadaat, a respected African-American community activist, were also present.

At the end of the presentation, it was obvious that the audience wanted more than the meandering abstractions that were offered up. One woman went to the front of the stage and talked movingly about the recent attack on her husband in downtown Portland. His attackers mistook him for an Arab man before they put him in the hospital. One of the first shouted questions (the organizers of the event evidently did not plan on participation – there were no microphones in the audience), was the embarrassing one: “What do you do when you discover that there are nazi skinheads in your community?”

As is usually the case at such events, the answer did not come from the panel.

Let us imagine instead that the auditorium was filled with the people who spent a good amount of their waking hours a little over a dozen years ago trying to drive nazi skinheads out of Portland. The lecture hall could not have contained the hundreds, indeed thousands of people who were part of that effort. But before we question the audience, let’s acknowledge a debt.

II

Those of us who hate neo-fascists and neofascism owe Elinor Langer a debt of thanks.

The first, belated, thanks are for the publication of her magazine-length article on nazi boneheads in a special edition of The Nation in 1990. From 1988 through roughly 1993, Portland, Oregon was a center, if not the center, of racist skinhead organizing in the United States. It was difficult for those outside of the city – just as it is for people in Portland now – to conceive just how many boneheads there were and why they were such a threat to the nascent gay and lesbian community, the progressive and radical community, the communities of color and the punk scene that were all part of Portland.

Thirteen-year-old kids would go to all ages shows at the Satryicon and come away muttering, “Maybe this punk rock is not for me,” when crews of shaved-head, Doc Marten’d people would clear out the mosh pits. There were daytime attacks on people of color in Pioneer Courthouse Square and ‘hippies’ along Hawthorne Avenue by small gangs of nazi punks. Weekend beer bashes with scores of boneheads were a common event, with physical attacks and racist graffiti sprees a common aftermath. Here is the police report on what they removed from one carload of boneheads (who were out hunting for a group of us): .45 caliber pistol, .357 Magnum revolver, 12-gauge pump shotgun, .22 caliber rifle. Spare clips for all. 3 knives, one baseball bat. That car had four nazi punks.

Langer captured the potential threat of that emerging movement and subculture in the special issue of The Nation. It was used by the Coalition for Human Dignity (which she correctly identifies as the main grass-roots organization opposing the neo-fascists in Portland) both as an educational tool and as a means of raising funds. Kids who knew they hated the local gang of white youths, who were usually just bullies learning to do racist graffiti, learned about the long and inglorious history of fascism. Older antiracists who were familiar with the Klan and similar organizations learned that the new face of fascism would not be caught dead or alive in a pointy-headed sheet.

The second thanks are for her new book. One Hundred Little Hitlers is not written as an organizing manual. But merely (!) telling the truth is always revolutionary. Again and again, Langer digs up the story from the participants and lets them tell what actually happened.

What results is a history that many people don’t like: Tom Metzger, who rightfully occupies center stage in her book, may have been convicted in trial and Ken Mieske, who killed Mulegeta Seraw, may be rotting in OSP, but white supremacy and the neo-fascist movement were untouched by the legal machinations.

Langer makes her points time and again: The boneheads didn’t come from Germany or even southern California. They were not stupid or cowardly. The arrests and trial in Portland, which she correctly views as more akin to a morality play, did nothing to slow them as a political movement.

The Southern Poverty Law Center and Morris Dees, who have pimped off the death of Mulugeta Seraw for fifteen years, should feel a little shamed by Langer’s work. The neo-liberal political establishment of Portland, which was working overtime to portray Portland as a safe place for Asian capital and visitors, has to be uncomfortable with the evidence she amasses to show that a deep-seated racist past, not a few California agitators, were behind the continuing attacks on people of color in Portland.

III

Another book remains to be written. So let us return to the audience and ask them for the history of how the neo-nazis were driven out of Portland.

Let’s start at the beginning, right after Mulugeta Seraw’s death in 1988.

The first rally to protest the death of Seraw was called by African students in Portland a few days later, in spite of opposition by the police and neo-liberal politicians (and some progressive groups).

When hundreds of people showed up, the governor of Oregon, Neil Goldschmidt, asked to speak. The rally organizers, who did not even know who he was, allowed him to talk. So began a continuing effort to coopt the grass-roots movement against neo-fascists, while attacking those who carried out militant actions.

The Coalition for Human Dignity initially met in the same chambers used by the Portland City Council. The community activists and college kids who composed its members spent much of 1989 vacillating between calling rallies, attempting to get city and union resolutions passed and taking direct action.

The decision was finally made to attack the boneheads where they lived, worked and played. While the Oregonian and neo-liberal politicians made speeches against “hate”, the remaining members of CHD, along with the new groups Anti-Racist Action and Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice decided to destroy the fascist groups in town. This meant that they were to be confronted when they appeared publicly but, more importantly, they would be attacked in ways that they were not prepared for.

ARA, SHARP and members of the punk music community, including members of CHD, began to drive the boneheads out of the clubs and the culture. Bands that had huge local followings, such as Poison Idea or Sweaty Nipples, stopped concerts to speak against boneheads and vowed not to play if they congregated at their shows. Some bands changed their names, such as Wehrmacht or took on confrontational anti-racist names, such as Crackerbash.

Security at most of the clubs began refusing to let open boneheads into the clubs – which led to tense scenes such as the 1991 Fugazi show at Pine Street Theater when a hundred boneheads, male and female, showed up and threatened to burn it down if they were not let in. They didn’t get in.

Individual ARA or SHARP members would confront boneheads outside of clubs, as when a fifteen-year-old Vietnamese punk girl in ARA blasted four boneheads in the face with Mace. Punk poster artists who had made Portland famous turned their talents to anti-fascist art.

We ousted the nazis from their jobs. When reliable reports would emerge about boneheads who were leading attacks at clubs, members of the CHD would do research. If he had a job at the Olive Garden, 50-100 activists from CHD, ARA, SHARP, the Lesbian Community Project, Black United Front, ACT-UP and other organizations would show up unexpectedly at his workplace. Flyers featuring his photo and a description of his attacks and his organizational beliefs would go into the hands of his co-workers and anyone going to eat.

We would meet with the manager of the business, let them know what was going to happen, notify the local media and wait for the inevitable.

It may have been a shit job, but in every case where we placed a picket, the bonehead lost the shit job, usually that day and usually because his co-workers refused to work while he was there.

We evicted them from our communities. The inner and outer Southeast were pockmarked with known bonehead houses. After the Coalition for Human Dignity became known for going after the boneheads (and, it should be noted, CHD had a phone number, unlike SHARP or ARA. One of the measures we used to gauge success was how many death threats were made to it on a weekly basis) a number of the neighborhood associations began contacting us, rather than the police.

Most boneheads rented. Dozens lost their crash pads when a picket line composed of anti-racist activists and neighborhood residents showed up at their front door, while a few CHD members and neighborhood association people met with their landlords. Since nazi punks had a predilection for loud parties, spraypainting on their walls and threatening their neighbors, most landlords were happy to move them out.

We defended our community. A number of individuals who had been attacked by nazi thugs told the Coalition that the police blew off their requests for protection. These ranged from an elderly woman who had sheltered kids hiding from nazi punks to members of SHARP whose apartment was attacked. Armed volunteers slept overnight, sometimes for weeks-long stretches, at houses that neo-nazi gangs had attacked.

From those volunteers, many of which went on to train in martial arts, there also emerged a group of people who carried out defensive strikes on the houses and vehicles of boneheads who had attacked people.

Bob Heick, who had moved to Portland from the Bay Area with the stated delusion of launching the American Front as the ‘foremost U.S. neo-nazi organization’, asked for police protection from unknown individuals. He complained to the media that he could not sleep safely in his home after it was hit three times. These attacks were not always coordinated or well thought out. Members of SHARP were jailed and imprisoned for attacks in which boneheads were severely injured and/or killed.

The political attack against the neo-nazis occurred despite a COINTELPRO operation against the anti-racist activists, with the FBI and Portland police meeting regularly (a dozen years before the current Portland Joint Terrorism Task Force).

As Langer notes in her book, the centerpiece of a “Dignity and Diversity” week before the trial of the Metzgers in October, 1990, was a march and rally in Portland. 5,000 people marched from the site of Seraw’s murder to a rally near Portland State University, where John Trudell, Hitting Birth and other acts performed.

What Langer does not note is that Portland police made repeated attempts to stop or disrupt the organizing, which was a joint effort by the Lesbian Community Project, ARA, SHARP, CHD and over 30 other community groups. Besides getting PSU to pull the park permit which had already been granted and threatening to revoke the parade permit, the police planted stories in the local media about car bombs along the parade route.

Organizers stated that the march and rally would occur as scheduled, permits or no permits.

The event went forward, though surrounded by massive police presence. When local politicians counted heads and showed up to go to the front of the event, they were escorted back. None were allowed to speak at the rally.

Drawing heavily from the FBI and police sources, the Oregonian at one point ran 13 straight stories about SHARP, calling them a ‘gang’ without ever interviewing a member. One such planted story declared that the police had broken up a Laurelhurst park neo-fascist rally on Hitler’s birthday, when in fact it had been an anti-racist picnic with a contingent of Asian and Native American folks present.

Local TV media were no better. At another critical point, after the murder of a bonehead, Bomber Dave, TV stations broadcast interviews with both the police and local neo-nazis that blamed SHARP. It was eventually revealed that two women and two men from his own bonehead crew had kicked him to death.

IV

Why is it important to know this history?

Here is a headline: “Racist gang leader sentenced to 3 years in hate crime series.”

Those sentences were not written in 1989 or 1992. That was the Oregonian on December 9, 2003. A November Tribune headline noted that a neo-fascist group attacked a Black man and someone that they thought was a SHARP member. An Indy Media Portland post asks what to do about nazi punks at shows.

The boneheads are still here, albeit in smaller and less public formations. No neo-fascist group has dared to call a public gathering in or near Portland in a decade.

But the conditions that led to the emergence of the Boot Boys and East Side White Pride (two local bonehead groups) and WAR (Metzger’s national organization) still exist. If anything, as Langer points out, those who consider themselves part of such a movement would number in the hundreds of thousands, not the ten thousand that was estimated in 1990.

It is important to remember that those who drove the boneheads out of Portland were, for the most part, young people in their late teens and early twenties.

It is important to understand that it was the decision to destroy the groups and to do so regardless of what the cops, the media and the city were doing, rather than any one tactic or event that gained the successes that occurred.

It is crucial to realize that both the nazis and the state have learned from what happened here and are unlikely to repeat their mistakes again.

I have not used the names of any of the people who were crucial to the destruction of neo-nazi groups in Portland. While they are scattered from Brazil to Boston, some of them still have their names posted on neo-fascist bulletin boards. Let me honor only one: Kirk Douglas, Native American, out gay man, anti-nazi activist. Died of AIDS in 1990.

M.Treloar is a white guy who will live to see the destruction of whiteness.

Free Love in Amsterdam? Bad vibes in Novi Sad

As best I can figure, in Amsterdam on September 22 a rally was held by a Dutch neo-Nazi party called the NVB. It was rudely interrupted by a number of anti-fascists, drawn, I think, from the ranks of local krakers (squatters), Ajax (?) football hooligans, and others. I think the neo-Nazi rally may have had something to do with the proposed construction of a mosque… Note the presence of Fairuza Balk’s Dutch-speaking twin towards the end of the report.

UPDATE : A Dutch-speaking comrade has kindly provided an English translation and some further background to the demo in Amsterdam…

Background

The NVB arranged to have a rally ostensibly in order to protest the construction of a mosque in Amsterdam but, moreover, the temporary removal, for a period during its construction, of a monument to Dutch people killed during WWII. (Ironically, the memorial is dedicated to preserving the memory of those died fighting against Nazism and the German occupation.) Members of the local Muslim community are apparently also unhappy at the presence of a cross in the vicinity of their mosque. In the event, the monument is scheduled to be removed for a period while construction takes place, and restored once it is finished. Local antifa maintain that the NVB rally was really intended to be a media stunt, and as a provocation towards the local, non-White community living in the Baarsjes.

Reporter: ”This is Suriname Square. We are here because the NVB is going to march against the replacement of a war monument so as to allow for the construction of the ‘Western Mosque’.”

W. Beaux, NVB: ”We are going to the spot where the cross is going to be taken away, to place a symbolic cross and to hold a speech.”

Reporter: ”At the same time a counter-demo is to take place, organised by the anti-racist committee ‘NVB Nee!’. Of course, this means trouble and indeed, the situation escalates. Squatters, F-side hooligans and locals attack the right-wing extremists.”

[Sirens. POLICE! POLICE!]

Angry Grrl: ”A boy is beaten up, he has dark skin. I jump in between them and what happens? The Nazis get away but I’m being beaten by the ME [riot police].”

D. Lange, committee NVB Nee!: ”I’m very pleased that their march has been cancelled and that they [the Nazis] were kept from going into ‘the Baarsjes.’* This is great.”

Reporter: “Aren’t you a supporter of non-violent resistance?”

D. Lange: “Well, when it’s concerning Nazis… they’re violent blokes.”

W. Beaux: ”We have to end our demonstration and we’re going to do this in an orderly manner.”

Below are the texts of two press releases found on Dutch IndyMedia:

PRESS RELEASE

START On Saturday September 22nd the NVB tried to protest in the Baarsjes in Amsterdam, without luck. Around 1.30 p.m. approximately 30 right-extremists who showed up for the march were escorted out of town in a bus by police. The reason was them using their flagpoles as weapons during a short confrontation with anti-fascists. The counter manifestation from NVB Nee! did take place. Last Saturday there was also a manifestation against the nazi demonstration from today. [There are video images of this manifestation in which locals speak out in support of the anti-fascists.] Five anti-fascists were arrested during the confrontation; a noisy demo in front of the police station turned into a sort of victory party at the same time. END

PRESS RELEASE (COMMITTEE NVB NEE!)

START The extreme right-wing NVB didn’t succeed in marching through Amsterdam today. Even before the 30 neo-Nazis started their march, they were held from marching by dozens of locals and antagonists. The police intervened almost immediately after the NVB protesters used their flagpoles as weapons and the march was prohibited. The extreme right-wing group mostly consisted of members of the highly violent international network Blood&Honour. It was clear to committee NVB Nee! that this group wasn’t planning on having a peaceful march, but wanted to provoke and create disorder in the neighbourhood ‘de Baarsjes’. Blood&Honour has been in the news more often this year because of racist violence and terrorist activities. The committee is very pleased that the march couldn’t take place. END

In the meantime, in Novi Sad, Serbia, members of neo-Nazi organisation Nacionalni Stroj (National Front) got themselves arrested at another rally, possibly for throwing things at some of the thousands (?) who rallied in opposition to them. The exact number of arrests varies from 20 (B92) to 30 (Reuters) to 26 (AP) to 56 (AP). The estimated number at and composition of the anti-fascist rally varies… In lieu of another 1,000 words, here’s a picture:

Hammerfest 2007: CANCELLED

KATU got video of tricksy boneheads.

Tony Baker, one of the key members (‘Exalted Ruler’) of the Sherwood Elks Lodge, apparently posted the following message on Portland IndyMedia, explaining the circumstances surrounding the neo-Nazi booking by the Hammerskins, and, upon the Elks’ discovery of the Hammerskins political status, its eventual cancellation:

The event was shut down
October 7, 2007

As one of the leaders … of the Sherwood Elks Lodge, I wanted to let everyone know that we were duped.

This group identified themselves as a “rock group reunion of friends” when arranging to use our facility. I can assure everyone that when they arrived, there was no indication who they were… no banners, no literature, no slogans, no out of order clothing, no racist conversations, only music and a gathering… nothing to indicate that this gathering was anything more than a reunion of a rock group. I know it’s hard to believe, but to any of the several dozen members of our organization who were in attendance last night, the gathering looked exactly as stated, a rock group reunion.

Once we received … indication that the Hammerskin Nation was using our facility, we worked to confirm [this] as quickly as possible (this was a bit difficult for us because again, there was no outward sign in this gathering that these people were a racist group, so we couldn’t initially [determine] whether the group was racist or whether the folks calling to complain were prank callers. After all, what’s the odds of a racist organization holding a meeting right under your nose without any indication of who they are?). We talked directly to the organizers, who denied involvement in the racist group and reiterated their story that they were a rock group reunion.

In spite of outward appearances, the evidence soon indicated that we had been very badly misled, and the guests in our facility were indeed an organization whose beliefs we can neither condone or support. They had also [misrepresented] themselves in renting the facility, and continued to misrepresent themselves in the evening. We shut down the event as quickly and as safely as possible after that and the group left before 8:00. None of the guests ever did admit who they were and their organizational affiliation.

The members of our organization are both shocked and embarrassed by this event, and thank everyone for quickly bringing the true identity of these folks to our attention.

So there you have it… “Portland, Oregon, the heart of Bob Mathews‘ [1953–1984] White Homeland, is [no longer] the location of this once in a lifetime event. No detail or expense have [sic] been spared to make this a must-attend event and [to] honor our Hammerskin Brothers & Sisters around the world. Family & Children are welcome and there will be childrens’ areas and activities available.”

Or maybe not.

Still, in Melbourne, Victoria this coming Saturday (October 13) there will be another gathering of the Hammerskins, in a political context much more supportive of their racism, and in the absence of both organised opposition and even the tiniest degree of attention from the corporate/state media.

Or maybe not.

Sherwood Elks leader says his lodge was duped by [bonehead] group
Kathleen Gorman
The Oregonian
October 7, 2007

The leader of the Sherwood Robin Hood Elks said Sunday that his group was duped into hosting a neo-Nazi group at its lodge on Saturday. “We just got completely hoodwinked on this one,” said Tony Baker of Beaverton, exalted ruler of the lodge off Oregon 99W in Sherwood. “They just used us to put on their event.”

Lodge members were told they were renting to a group of rock musicians getting together for a reunion, not 100 or so [boneheads] who are part of Hammerskin Nation, Baker said. In fact, they never saw any banners, signs, literature or other indications of neo-Nazi activity, he said.

The Hammerskin Nation, one of the nation’s best-organized [bonehead] groups, came to Portland this weekend for its annual convention. The group refused to say where the three-day event would be held.

The Elks got suspicious when they began getting nonstop phone calls, most of them anonymous, accusing them of supporting a racist group. Those were followed by calls from the media and Sherwood police. Finally, Elks members confronted group members and asked them to leave, Baker said. The group left, never admitting that they were anything other than who they said they were.

Baker was relieved — even as the accusations continued. “I had people call me who were hyperventilating,” he said. “Until yesterday, I didn’t know what a Hammerskin was.” The Elks would have never rented to the group had they known who they really were, he said. Their whole organization stands for “leaving your biases behind,” he said.

“Just a bunch of guys playing music”

…is apparently how Ken, the manager of the Sherwood Elks Lodge in Sherwood, Oregon, the venue for this weekend’s Hammerfest neo-Nazi music festival, has described the event. “The Ad-Hoc Committee Against Racism and Fascism”, on the other hand, “urges all concerned groups and individuals to call Ken, the Elks Club booking agent, at (503) 625-5977, urging him to cancel the event”.

Oddly enough, Ken’s description is almost precisely how Gary, the manager of The Birmingham Hotel in Fitzroy, Melbourne, described the 2006 Ian Stuart Donaldson memorial gig: “It was a punk, skinhead gig that was the same as any night of the week.” Local scabs, naturally enough, agree, and are seemingly able and willing to do anything to excuse their support for a neo-Nazi venue; even, in the case of Chunga of The Worst, resorting to really bad comedy. (For this mob, apparently, punk is ‘just a bunch of fucking muppets playing music’.)

Courage & Solidarity not Blood & Soil

In Bern, Switzerland, according to AP, 500 antifa managed to disrupt a march by 10,000 members and supporters of the People’s Party (SVP), described as a ‘nationalist’ party by AP (Swiss president calls for calm after pre-election violence in capital, International Herald Tribune, October 7, 2007). In other reports, the SVP is described as belonging to the far right. In 2003, “The party ran an anti-foreigner campaign, in which asylum seekers were portrayed as criminals and drug dealers”, and gained 27% of the vote in national elections, or 55 seats from a total of 200. The party’s leader, Christoph Blocher, is a billionaire industrialist, and “The party recently launched a campaign to deport criminal foreigners, illustrating its point with posters showing white sheep kicking a black sheep off a Swiss flag.”

Whoever suspected Swiss nationalists could wield such influence over the ideological pronouncements of Australian-based Tories?

Putin’s Russia: Blood & Soil

A few weeks ago, soon-to-be-ex PM John HoWARd entertained Russian President Vladimir Putin with stories about Our Don; Putin returned the favour by agreeing to buy Australian uranium for eventual re-processing in places like Angarsk. In July, local Russian boneheads — presumably working in collaboration with state authorities — helped to smooth out the wrinkles in this process by attacking a protest camp established at The International Uranium Enrichment Centre in Angarsk, and successfully murdering one of its occupants, a twenty-something anarchist named Ilya Borodaenko. State-sponsored / far right terrorism such as this is not unusual in Putin’s Russia, and October 7 marks the one-year anniversary of the murder of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya (1958–2006). Anna was assassinated for her reportage on corruption under Putin, as well as regarding his war on Chechnya.

“‘If people in my country have no protection from this lawless regime, that means I survive here while others are dying… People who were my witnesses and informants in Chechyna have died for that reason, and that reason alone, as soon as I left their homes. If it again proves the case, then how can I go on living abroad while others are dying in my place?”

More here.

Otherwise, racist violence in Russia is a daily occurrence, most frequently taking the form of stabbings by gangs of boneheads (and of the sort that make the Hammerskins look quiescent by comparison). While noting that the inquiry into Politkovskaya’s murder is in disarray, the UCSJ also notes (Bigotry Monitor: Volume 7, Number 34, September 7, 2007):

RACIST KILLINGS RISE TO 38 THIS YEAR. So far this year, 38 people have been murdered in racist killings and well over 300 people have been injured, mainly in stabbings, according to Sova Information-Analytical Center. BBC called the data “shocking.” The most common victims are from the Caucasus and Central Asia. Sova researchers warn that [boneheads] have begun targeting other minorities, including homosexuals, with the tacit connivance of the authorities.

Sova says that Moscow, St Petersburg, and Nizhny Novgorod are the leaders in racist attacks. In Moscow alone, [boneheads] killed 24 people.

According to Sova, the toll of racist attacks is increasing and prosecutors remain reluctant to attribute racial motivation to killings of members of ethnic minorities. Instead, they charge suspects with “hooliganism.” Human rights activists explain that this is because the authorities have traditionally turned a blind eye to racist killings and used nationalism as a political weapon. Moreover, Sova noted, a substantial proportion of Russians voice opinions that would qualify as criminally racist in many European countries.

Long live social democracy! Youth out of Copenhagen!

Ra ra ra, we’re going to smash the oiks!

In Copenhagen, armed thugs in blue, declaring “anarchy is a fag”, have arrested over 400 people — apparently the largest number of arrests at any single event in Danish history — for attempting to obtain a little breathing space, and a new ‘youth house’, in what’s ostensibly their city; an action which follows the eviction of the squatted social centre Ungdomshuset (Youth House) earlier in the year (Danish clash sparks mass arrests, BBC, October 6, 2007). The Ungdomshuset was an historic landmark squire, famous place, say no more, dating back to the early twentieth century, “SOLD!” out by the social democratic-controlled city council to a Christian cult who, in an attempt to exorcise the free spirits dwelling in the building, completely demolished it. Given the fact that something like 4,000 people took to the streets again today, it appears likely that greater force will be required to fully crush the spirit of youthful rebellion.

For up-to-date schnews in English; see also ‘Copenhagen police clash with rock-throwing youths seeking to occupy vacant building’, AP, International Herald Tribune, October 6, 2007; Hundreds of youths face charges after clashes with police in Copenhagen, AP, International Herald Tribune, October 7, 2007. Mick Armstrong of Socialist Alternative has denounced the fact that some of the hundreds arrested were Germans, Swedes, Finns, Norwegians as well as some from Britain, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland and Turkey. Armstrong stated that “These people are simply provocateurs that open up protests to police repression. In Europe their ranks have been riddled by police agents and fascists… [they are] football hooligans who travel the world looking for violence. The left should offer no comfort to these crazies. We should do whatever we can to isolate them. They are wreckers.”

Class War: Oh I say! Steady on old bean!

From Henley to Notting Hill: Class War is on the move again
Ian Jack
The Guardian
Saturday October 6, 2007

The anti-rich movement has Cameron in its sights, but the warriors’ weapons have lost their edge

Next month, on Saturday November 3, a demonstration will head for David Cameron’s house in Notting Hill; just possibly, he may be prime minister by then. The postcard from the promoters, Bash the Rich, has on one side a ragged-looking boy (actually the boy from Ken Loach’s Kes) sticking up two fingers at members of Oxford’s Bullingdon Club (young Cameron second from left) in their dress shirts and tails. The other side has a picture of Cameron with “parasite” across his forehead. There’s a list of what the protest is against, with a cross against gastropubs, swanky brasseries, yuppie lofts, gentrification, posh estate agents, gated communities and Lord Snooty. What does the protest want? A tick marks real boozers, affordable housing and public spaces. “Toffs out!” in big letters. “Old Etonians fuck off!”…

Oh, and props to Vents for informing the Revolver mob about the boycott last night. Now go buy his album! (Incidentally, this record is available in the foyer. Some of us gotta live as well, y’know… etcetera.)

Kevin Andrews: Untamed and Unashamed

Crikey! The Wicked Witch from Ipswich, Pauline Hanson, reckons Kevin Andrews may be on to something with his new immigration policy. Needless to say, so does Another Liberal Party (Labor backs African ban, Herald Sun, October 4, 2007). But what’s it all about, anyway? I asked Andrews, and in an exclusive to slackbastard, here’s what he had to say:

POLICY ON IMMIGRATION:
Stop future immigration of Africans to Australia.

WHY?
Uneducated, violence-prone Africans are called a minority group within the African diaspora. That is not the case as Africans believe that it is their cultural right to solve problems through violence.
I am far from being alone in this belief. It is not a racist or political statement but a statement of cultural difference, and is a fact and fanatical!
Take an inter-departmental committee made up of very senior people from a range of Federal Government departments, some with law degrees, spending time looking at this over a period of time, or when I go out and talk to various groups getting feedback about this all the time. So, there’s a range of evidence in relation to the matter, I don’t think anybody really denies that this is a challenge. It’s really a matter of how we respond to that challenge and putting our head in the sand and pretending it’s not there is not going to help the people concerned and it’s not going to help Australia.
We have already experienced fanatical unemployment and violence by Africans in Australia. It must be stopped!
Australians do not want fanatical and cultural ideals forced on them!

So there you have it. Kevin Andrews: untamed and unashamed.
