Church & State & That’s Entertainment!

Update (July 31) : YouTube, presumably bowing to pressure from the Church, has removed the offending video. The Good News (so to speak) is that it’s still available via Live Leak; you can even download the video if you want…

Update : After initially defending Reverend Geoffrey Baron’s behaviour, it now appears that, perhaps after some further prayer and reflection (and perhaps even some further consultation with the Church’s PR department), local Church authorities now believe it wiser to apologise for the Reverend’s racially abusive, sexually explicit, and profanity-laden diatribe as captured on video last year. Or so says Sky News (Church apologises). Baron, whose behaviour has been characterised by me as being the real life embodiment and Antipodean Catholic equivalent of Viz magazine character Paul Whicker The Tall Vicar, has also apparently prompted a children’s rights group to recommend anger management classes… well, according to the Herald Sun / AAP anyway (Priest vs skateboarders shocker).

Mark Russell in The Age reports that Red-faced church sorry for blue dean, and a slightly more formal apology — carefully describing Baron’s references to sore arseholes, sperm, and boys fucking, by way of stating that the Right Reverend “used obscene language and suggested in vulgar terms that the youths were homosexual” — is also provided by a further article in the Herald Sun (Apology for priest’s tirade).

Priests these days eh?

Every now and then you did a cartoon you were aware hit the button and you immediately got a good reaction from it. Paul Whicker the Tall Vicar was the first one, in 1981, and after that Johnny Fartpants, and when the Fat Slags were launched, they had the same effect, a considerable initial impact and then they fade away.

“Likewise, Sodom, Gomorrah, and the surrounding towns, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual promiscuity and practiced unnatural vice, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.” (Epistle of Jude 1:17) or “How’s your arsehole so sore by being fucked by all these cunts?”

In a not entirely unexpected development, local Church authorities, in the person of the Vicar-General of Melbourne, the Reverend Les Tomlinson, have defended the actions of a local priest, who last July provided local youth with an impromptu sermon on the need to respect Church property. A video on YouTube shows the Dean of Melbourne Cathedral, the Reverend Geoffrey Baron, quoting from one of the lesser-known Epistles of St Paul, and instructing a number of teenage boys skateboarding on property outside of the Cathedral to be Good Christians and to go forth and multiply, “by the sperm of all these boys that fuck you”.

A rough transcript is available for your reading pleasure here.

Judging by reports (or one at least), teenagers skateboarding on Church property — in this case, that belonging to St. Patricks’ Cathedral in Melbourne — are a persistent problem for Church authorities. However, despite this, the Church does not appear to have established an especially sensitive means of encouraging teenagers to skate elsewhere, instead allowing an elderly Reverend (supplemented by the stern instructions of another, unknown female Church official), to engage in racist and sexually explicit verbal abuse of the young offenders in question.

According to one parishioner, the priest in question, Dean Baron, “was ordained in 1968 at Saint Kevin’s Church, Ormond and served in a number of parishes as an assistant priest before being appointed parish priest of Saint Joseph’s Parish, Northcote in January, 1984. In July, 1997 he was appointed parish priest of Saint James’ Parish, Gardenvale. Dean Baron has many talents to bring to the role of Dean of the Cathedral, not least of which are his considerable musical background and ability, his keen interest in liturgy, his warm, friendly and welcoming personality and his generous and committed pastoral care of those entrusted to him.”

And er, the ability to swear like a drunken sailor.

The ABC’s account of the contents of the YouTube video is particularly interesting, because although it makes reference to Baron’s racist taunts, it signally fails to register their explicit sexual content. What’s more odd is the fact that, while neither it nor any other ‘news’ service provides a link to the video in question, viewing it would quickly reveal that there’s more to the story. That said, why the contents of the video should only come to the attention of the corporate/state media now, over twelve months after the incident itself (and its being uploaded to YouTube), is a question left unanswered and, in fact, unasked.

Church defends Monsignor’s outburst

July 27, 2007

MARK COLVIN: The Catholic Church is defending the behaviour of one of its leaders, the Dean of Melbourne Cathedral, after a video showing him verbally abusing a group of teenagers surfaced on the internet.

The Reverend Geoffrey Baron is seen being harassed and abused by a group of skateboarders, but rather than turning the other cheek, he lets fly with obscene and racist epithets.

A spokesman for the Catholic Church says problems with trespassing skateboarders are long-standing and Monsignor Baron was provoked.

In Melbourne, Samantha Donovan.

SAMANTHA DONOVAN: The footage, posted on the video sharing website YouTube was apparently shot a year ago and runs nearly three and a half minutes.

It appears that a group of skateboarders has been ignoring Reverend Geoffrey Baron’s demands that they leave the steps and paved area outside Melbourne’s St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Several of them continue to skateboard around him and taunt him asking him if he wants them to leave.

Monsignor Baron’s demands become more abusive.

(video excerpt)

SKATEBOARDER: Do we have to go?
GEOFFREY BARON: Move!
SKATEBOARDER: Yes or no?
GEOFFREY BARON: Move now. Off the property. I will (inaudible) of all these boys. F*** you. Get off the property. Get off the property.
SKATEBOARDER: Awwww. (laughing) I’m going to f*** you up!
GEOFFREY BARON: Off the property. Get off the property now!

(end video excerpt)

SAMANTHA DONOVAN: As the skateboarders make obscene gestures, taunt and throw things at Monsignor Baron he appears to respond with comments about one of the teenager’s race.

(video excerpt)

GEOFFREY BARON: Get back to where you come from you spool [sic]. You don’t belong in Australia.
SKATEBOARDER: You are racist you f***. Stop being a racist f***en freak. Don’t touch me you freak!
GEOFFREY BARON: Get off the property. You foreigner there! Look at his sleepy eyes, his black hair, sleepy eyes. Go back to where you belong.
SKATEBOARDER: You f***ing bald prick.

(end video excerpt)

SAMANTHA DONOVAN: This afternoon, the Vicar-General of Melbourne, the Reverend Les Tomlinson said the video was disturbing and the Church wasn’t proud of Monsignor Baron’s behaviour but he had been provoked.

LES TOMLINSON: Could you imagine yourself being subjected to the abuse and the pushing that he was subjected to and be confident that you yourself would not react in a way that perhaps you wouldn’t if you weren’t provoked?

And if any human being is under siege like that, they may well react in a way they wouldn’t do in another circumstance.

SAMANTHA DONOVAN: Monsignor Tomlinson said groups of skateboarders gathering around the Church have been a long-standing problem.

LES TOMLINSON: I know, the Dean has spoken to me several times and [is?] feeling in fear of his own safety with the confrontations he’s experienced. And I think that the YouTube demonstrates not only the confrontation that occurred, but how it was provoked by these skateboarders.

SAMANTHA DONOVAN: Monsignor Baron is away at the moment.

Monsignor Tomlinson says he will speak with him on his return but isn’t sure if he will be reprimanded.

MARK COLVIN: Samantha Donovan.

Hmmm. The Church asks for patience and understanding following one of its members being exposed, publicly, as abusive. Apparently, the boys provoked the priest. Or, perhaps he wasn’t in full control of his faculties.

And now he’s gone away.

Where have I heard these lines before? Oh yeah:

Broken Rites and Catholics

There are many reasons why Broken Rites has encountered so many cases of Catholic Church sex-abuse.

The Catholic Church rejects married priests and women priests. The Catholic Church advertises its priests and religious personnel as being “celibate”. Also, the Catholic Church has traditionally interfered in the bedrooms of its congregation – “no sex outside of marriage”, no contraception, no divorce, no choice in the termination of a pregnancy, and so on. This pious public image has unfortunately caused Catholics to believe that they and their children are “safe” in the hands of “celibate” clergy and religious personnel.

Furthermore, until recently, the Catholic Church has skillfully managed to cover up cases of sexual abuse within its ranks. Too often, Catholic child-victims felt that they were prohibited from reporting the abuse to anyone, even to their parents. Too often, Catholic parents were reluctant to go to the police.

Commonly, Catholic victims maintained a life-long silence about their abuse. If they did report the abuse, often they merely told a church official – perhaps at a bishop’s office or the headquarters of a religious order. But this enabled the church officials to “tip off” their colleague, the offender; and then perhaps he would be transferred to a different parish or a different school or, in some cases, to another diocese, to abuse new victims; or he might be awarded an overseas “study” trip. The offender’s former parishioners (or students) would not be told why Father (or Brother) was leaving his old parish, and the new parish (or school) would not be warned why Father or Brother was arriving. Thus, countless children and vulnerable adults were put at risk.

In Australia, this Catholic cover-up began to break down after Broken Rites began operating in 1993. Broken Rites established, and publicised, a telephone hotline for survivors, and we began receiving calls from thousands of people (mostly Catholics), alerting us to cases of church sex-abuse that had had hitherto been covered up. The first cases we took up resulted in the jailing of several Catholic priests and religious brothers throughout 1994, 1995 and 1996. These convictions created a big impact in the Australian news media. This publicity prompted more survivors, especially those with a Catholic background, to phone us for help. This helps to explain why Broken Rites has been involved in so many Catholic cases. Incidentally, the members of the current Broken Rites executive committee all happen to have had a Catholic childhood…

Tomlinson himself is quoted in the case of one priest, Reverend Barry Robinson:

A year after the Archdiocese of Boston adopted a new policy on handling allegations of clergy sexual abuse in the 1990s, an Australian priest who had admitted having sex with a teenager abruptly left the archdiocese and the country, short-circuiting a potential investigation by police and child welfare authorities, according to documents filed yesterday in Suffolk Superior Court.

Documents from the archdiocese’s own files show that the Rev. Barry Robinson returned to Australia in April 1994 without being questioned by civil authorities even though Robinson had acknowledged to his therapist in March that he had had sexual relations with a teenage boy on three occasions in the rectory of Blessed Sacrament Church in Jamaica Plain…

In addition to admitting to a therapist and church officials to having been sexually involved with the teenager, Robinson also acknowledged that he had engaged in sexual “misconduct” when assigned as a priest in Chile from 1979 to 1985, a church official in Australia said in a statement…

Monsignor Les Tomlinson, vicar general for the Melbourne Archdiocese, said in response to written questions yesterday that Robinson had not been contacted by law enforcement authorities once he arrived back in Australia…

Cats are a w e s o m e

Nursing home cat can sense death, ease passing
Julie Steenhuysen
July 25, 2007

CHICAGO (Reuters) – When Oscar the Cat visits residents of the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island, the staff jumps into action — Oscar can sense within hours when someone is about to die.

In his two years living in Steere’s end-stage dementia unit, Oscar has been at the bedside of more than 25 residents shortly before they died, according to Dr. David Dosa of Brown University in Providence.

He wrote about Oscar in the New England Journal of Medicine.

“It’s not that the cat is consistently there first,” Dr. Joan Teno, a professor of community health at Brown University, who sees patients in the unit. “But the cat always does manage to make an appearance, and it always seems to be in the last two hours.”

Raised at the nursing home since he was a kitten, Oscar often checks in on residents, but when he curls up for a visit, physicians and nursing home staff know it’s time to call the family.

“I don’t think this is a psychic cat,” said Teno. “I think there’s probably a biochemical explanation,” she said in a telephone interview.

While pets are often used to bring comfort to the elderly in nursing home settings, Oscar’s talent is special, though not unexpected.

“That is such a cat thing to do,” said Thomas Graves, a feline expert and chief of small animal medicine at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine…

A Day in the Life of Oscar the Cat, David M. Dosa, M.D., M.P.H., The New England Journal of Medicine, Vol.357, No.4, pp.328-329 (July 26, 2007)

Oscar the Cat awakens from his nap, opening a single eye to survey his kingdom. From atop the desk in the doctor’s charting area, the cat peers down the two wings of the nursing home’s advanced dementia unit. All quiet on the western and eastern fronts. Slowly, he rises and extravagantly stretches his 2-year-old frame, first backward and then forward. He sits up and considers his next move…

Speaking of cats and death, Diodorus Siculus (of Sicily) (c.90–30BC), the Greek historian and author of the Library of World History, mentions witnessing a group of Egyptians lynching a Roman who had (accidentally) killed a (holy) cat. “Whoever kills a cat in Egypt is condemned to death, whether he committed this crime deliberately or not. The people gather and kill him. An unfortunate Roman, who accidentally killed a cat, could not be saved, either by King Ptolemy of Egypt or by the fear which Rome inspired.” Further, according to Ancient Egypt Online:

It was apparently illegal to export cats to neighbouring countries. This led to a thriving trade in smuggled cats! Court records confirm that armies were occasionally dispatched to rescue the kidnapped felines and bring them home to Egypt.

Herodotus claimed that on discovery of a house fire, the men from the house would line up outside the building to protect the cats from danger. He suggested that the cats would “leap into the fire” unless protected by the men, which seems rather unlikely unless their kittens were still inside the home. This story may well be made up or exaggerated, but again highlights the high status of the cat in Egyptian society.

Herodotus also recorded that the Persians used the Egyptian’ love of cats against them. Apparently, the [evil!] Persians captured a large number of cats and let them loose on the battlefield outside Pelusium. When the Egyptians saw the terrified cats running around the battlefield, they surrendered rather than risk harm to their beloved friends.

Brazil: Homeless Occupation Movements in Rio De Janeiro
Kyle Weinberg
Upside Down World
July 26, 2007

Slavery wasn’t abolished in Brazil until 1888, and when it ended, newly-freed slaves were cast to the streets to fend for themselves with no resources or property. Thus began the precarious situation of Afro-Brasileros post-slavery. Current manifestations of this infamous legacy are the favelas – prevalent in all major Brazilian cities, including Rio de Janeiro. Unlike Sao Paolo, where favelas are concentrated on the periphery of the city, Rio has favelas spread out all over, often right next to the richest of neighborhoods. The favelas receive almost no government assistance and any resources they have are “appropriated” from outside the favela. Streets are unpaved, sewer infrastructure doesn’t exist and electricity and water are often stolen from more affluent adjacent barrios…

And er, Melbourne

St Kilda’s Last Stand

Yet again the money moguls, capitalist wankers and government-sponsored criminals have won. The Baymour Court flats were evicted by the filth — subservient scum to the rich — while a hundred or so people looked on and the media filmed the whole show to screen between sports segments.

The whole process started a few years ago when high-flying parasites such as Bond and Brady moved into St Kilda declaring it to be their town to tear apart at will. Pubs were sold and yuppified, greasy food bars became upmarket hang-outs for the rich and the streets were cleaned up. The first stage completed, the character of the town had the seed of yuppie sickness buried deep inside its grungy veins. Next the residents had to go, and Charnwood tenants and squatters moved out: the Esplanade, with its Gold Coast-type views, is being invaded. The Venue is closed, Baymour Court flats evicted and standing empty, and the foreshore is secure in yuppie hands. Now the interior waits to be conquered, and the evil seed will have sprouted…

STUDIOS FROM THE IMAGINARY, AND OTHERS JUST DOWN THE ROAD

The Espy Artist Studios, at the rear of the Espy Hotel, is almost archetypal of the romantically shabby studio complex, its Spanish Mission-style façade looking like a stage flat straight from Carmen. While common internal areas are similarly crumbly, the rooms themselves prized — it comes as no surprise to find that space in the complex is highly sought-after, and usually passed between artist friends. The derelict two-story block of flats has been studios since 1997 but won’t be around for much longer. In the overgrown internal courtyard a five-story scaffolding tower has been erected by property-developer owner Becton. Prospective buyers of the apartment high-rise that is to replace the 1930s ‘Baymour Court’ block are led from the display apartment on the Esplanade to climb above the studios to inspect the view.

One wonders if those who make the climb appreciate the irony that the website pitch for the Esplanade apartments celebrates the “gently decaying buildings” of St Kilda. As they look over a studio’s north-facing window and out to the bay, they also overlook the very qualities that attract developers and buyers to somewhere like St Kilda. Capitalising on a “gritty past” we are told that the replacement for the gloriously grungy building will be “contemporary yet timeless, strong but not intimidating, luxurious but not ostentatious.” Indeed!

Another neo-Nazi assault on FNB in Russia

Update :

Neo-Nazis Attack Anti-Fascist Youth in St. Petersburg

July 27, 2007

Neo-Nazis attacked a 16-year-old boy who was on his way to an anti-fascist punk rock concert, according to a July 23, 2007 report by the Sova Information-Analytical Center. Between 8-10 neo-Nazis screaming abuse against anti-fascists beat the boy up near the Belgrade night club, where anti-fascists had gathered to raise money for victims of a neo-Nazi attack on environmentalists in Angarsk (Irkutsk region). The victim was taken [to] a hospital with head injuries.

Neo-Nazis Attack Group Feeding the Homeless in Novosibirsk

July 26, 2007

Neo-Nazis attacked a group feeding homeless people in Novosibirsk, Russia, according to a July 24, 2007 report by the Sova Information-Analytical Center. Around 20 neo-Nazis took part in the July 1 attack, which resulted in the injury of a thirteen-year-old boy who happened to walk by during the attack. Police detained several of the attackers, but there is no information in the report about any charges being filed against the suspects.

Neo-Nazis often attack similar events in cities across Russia. Anti-fascists and anarchists regularly organize “Food Not Bombs” events to feed the homeless and to make a statement against violence.

Suspected German neo-Nazi attacks Indian – police
July 25, 2007

BERLIN (Reuters) – A suspected neo-Nazi attacked an Indian student on a tram in the eastern city of Dresden, leaving the victim with serious head injuries, police said on Wednesday.

The shaven-headed man attacked the Indian student without provocation and demanded that he leave the tram, police said. The victim had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said they believed the culprit, who they are still hunting, was also responsible for at least two other attacks on people of foreign origin in recent months.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has vowed to combat right-wing violence, which last year rose to its highest level since reunification in 1990 but critics say campaigns to draw people away from radical ideology are still inadequate.

The government said on Wednesday around 50 [BONEHEAD] concerts, traditionally a recruiting ground for far-right groups, took place in the months April to July this year.

The number of participants increased to about 6,000 from around 4,500 in the first quarter of the year.

“Stop! Hammer time!” Or: Boneheads and Baldies

International neo-Nazi (bonehead) network the Hammerskins will be celebrating 20 years of racist stupidity, ignorance and violence this year at Hammerfest, their annual gathering and concert. Hammerfest 2007 is scheduled to take place October 5–7, in Portland, Oregon, and in addition to the usual assortment of local, US-based string-pluckers and tub-thumpers, it will also * an undisclosed act from Australia; ‘unknown’ but, given the close relationship between the band and the Hammerskins — and given their apparent decision to go kaput! after the upcoming ISD Memorial gig in Melbourne later the same month — chances are the special guest will be the Melbourne-based B-grade metal outfit Fortress, lead by Scott McGuinness.

Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun

Named for the stirring use of hammers as fascist symbols in the film The Wall (1982), it remains unknown if the bright spark who thought of the name Hammerskins was a fan of Pink Floyd’s earlier, psychedelic rock; certainly, Bob Geldof’s role as “A troubled rock star [who] descends into madness in the midst of his physical and social isolation from everyone” appears to be reflected in his eventual belief that charity solves poverty. In any case, established in 1987, it wasn’t very long before the Hammerskins came to national prominence in their natural home, the United States, when, a year later, five members of the original ‘Confederate’ Hammerskins in Dallas — Christopher Greer, 23, John Jordan, 17, Michael Lawrence, 20, Sean Tarrant, 18 and Daniel Wood, 18 — “chased and attacked minorities who attempted to enter Robert E. Lee Park in downtown Dallas. The five were apparently inspired by a racist rally they attended in Tulsa that June where Tom Metzger, leader of White Aryan Resistance (WAR) spoke. When they were arrested, the defendants had baseball bats and broken pieces of concrete, which they apparently intended to use to recreate the Kristallnacht to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the attacks on Jewish stores and homes that took place on November 9, 1938 in Nazi Germany”. The five were sentenced for the crime in April, 1990.

Since that time, Hammerskins have engaged in many violent assaults, up to and including murder. Thus according to the ADL:

In June 1991, Arlington, Texas, was the site of further violence by Hammerskins. Three 16-year-old members of the Confederate Hammerskins murdered an African American, Donald Thomas, while he sat on the back of a truck with two white friends… That same year, in Birmingham, Alabama, Hammerskin Louis Oddo and his colleague Adam Galleon murdered a 50-year-old black homeless man on Christmas Eve. Oddo and Galleon killed the man, Douglas Garrett, by hitting him with a baseball bat and kicking him with their heavy boots. Oddo and Galleon were subsequently convicted of murder…

Otherwise, the history of the Hammerskins has revolved around the production of White supremacist propaganda, the consumption of alcohol, the recruitment of new members, and the broadening of the network from its initial base in the US to Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Beginning in early 1991, Hammerskins franchises were established in Switzerland and Northern Ireland / the Six Counties, followed by Germany, France, the Czech Republic, England, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. The Australian franchise was established in 1993. Currently, Hammerskins may be found in the US, Australia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, New Zealand/Aotearoa, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland… although given the network sometimes faces government repression and various other forms of political opposition, much of its business is conducted on a Nudge nudge. Snap snap. Grin grin, wink wink, say no more? basis.

Nevertheless, along with Blood & Honour (in its various permutations), the Hammerskins have done much to promote White power muzak, often referred to by the euphemism ‘Rock Against Communism’ or RAC (so named as a result of its initial propagation in response to ‘Rock Against Racism’). On contemporary RAC, one US skinhead writes: “[In 2005] RAC is a fucking cancer in our scene, dulling the line between true skinheads and boneheads. The public still thinks all skinheads are Nazis, everyone still disses SHARP and yells “no politics”, and instead of skinhead being a way for tens of thousands of multi-racial working-class kids to “have a laugh and have a say”, the scene has become a fucking joke about nothing more than expensive imported beers and designer clothes. It’s sad, but it’s the fucking truth.”

    Hammerfest Chronology

    2006: October 21, Detroit, Michigan. Starred Blood in the Face, Definite Hate, Frontline, H8 Machine, Rebel Hell, Whitewash and Youngblood;
2005: October 1/2, Atlanta, Georgia. Featured Attack, Action Group 88, Blood in the Face, Brainwash, Confident of Victory, Definite Hate, Frontline, Kremator, Prussian Blue, Red White & Black, Whitelaw; approximately 100–200 in attendance
2004: October 2, Detroit, Michigan. With Brutal Attack, Max Resist, H8Machine, Definite Hate, Red White and Black, Rebel Hell
2003: September 13, Harrisburg, Pennyslvania. Featured H8Machine, Hammerhead, Intimidation One, Max Resist, Mistreat (Finland), Platoon 14, and Slay the Beast; perhaps as many as 350 boneheads in attendance
2002: December 7, scheduled for Daytona Beach, Florida, then cancelled and moved to Jacksonville; approximately 50–100 boneheads in attendance
2001: October 27/8, Atlanta (Bremen), Georgia. With Bully Boys, Intimidation One, Max Resist, Mistreat (Finland), Nemesis (Scotland); approximately 300–600 boneheads in attendance
2000: October, Atlanta (Bremen), Georgia. Brutal Attack, Code of Violence, Dying Breed, Extreme Hatred, Hatecrime and White Wash
    1999: October, Atlanta (Bremen), Georgia

The Hammerskins suffered a major setback in 1999, however, when five members from Indiana were expelled for being too violent; albeit only against a recalcitrant former member (the offending member was roughed up, had his colors torn from him, and was then held down while his former comrades burned off his Hammerskin tattoos with a blowtorch and shoved a pool cue up his rectum). The expelled members established the Outlaw Hammerskins. The Outlaws eventually imploded, but since then a number of other regional bonehead gangs have formed, and some eventually found their way to forming the Vinlander Social Club. A summit in Ohio in October 2005 brought together a number of these rival groups and networks to further challenge the Hammerskins slowly-eroding and increasingly-resented dominance. The position of the Hammerskins probably wasn’t helped by the collapse in January of that year of closely-related neo-Nazi label Panzerfaust Records, following public disclosure of the fact that one of its two co-founders was in reality of Mexican descent.

Aussie Aussie Aussie | Oi Fucking Oi

In Australia, the Southern Cross Hammerskins work closely with B&H, and the two local franchises have been jointly organising the annual Ian Stuart Donaldson memorial for the last 10 years, often, and for the last two years, at The Birmingham Hotel in Fitzroy. Aside from Fortress, the other bands that form the local ‘scene’ past and present include Bail Up!, Blood Red Eagle, Blood Oath, Death[‘?]s Head, Deströyer 666, Gospel of the Horns, Raven’s Wing, Southern Storm, Spear of Longinus and Ultraviolence. There is also close co-operation between boneheads in Australia and New Zealand/Aotearoa. In 2004, for example, the NZHS organised a gig featuring Australian band Deathshead; in 2007, Blood Red Eagle played a gig to celebrate Hitler’s birthday. Evidence for the cross-fertilisation of bonehead, skinhead and heavy metal subcultures may be found in local oi! band Bulldog Spirit (the drummer for which once played with Deathshead, Fortress and Ravenous), Marching Orders (the original guitarist for which played with Bail Up!) as well as the more general socialisation of boneheads and skinheads, such as at last year’s ISD memorial, on bulletin boards, websites and elsewhere.

Back to Portland

The choice of Portland, Oregon as the location for Hammerfest 2007 (see Neo-Nazis Take Portland, Willamette Week, July 11, 2007) is noteworthy for the fact that 20 years ago Portland had a reputation as something of a Mecca for boneheads, especially following the bashing to death in November 1988 of an Ethiopian student named Mulugeta Seraw. The following years saw skinheads fighting a battle against bonehead infiltration of the city and the subculture, one which culminated in 1993. A journalist for Time writes:

Like their cousins elsewhere, Portland’s racist skinheads [sic] sport flight jackets, suspenders and Doc Martens with shoelaces in various colors: white for racial purity, red for the blood they are willing to shed and yellow as a signal they have shed someone else’s. But another gang of skinheads is slightly different in appearance: the swastikas have diagonal lines slashed through them, and black-and-white breast-pocket patches depict a crucified skinhead with the letters SHARP written over the top. These are the Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice — the remnant, less prominent in other cities, of what was once a nonracialist baldie majority. The antiracists, says Christensen, “think the racists give true skinheads a bad image.” And so they fight them.

When SHARP members started showing up in Portland [c.1989–1993], other liberal militant groups such as the gay organization ACT UP reached out to them but soon retreated. SHARP was intent on fighting fire with fire; soon rumbles ensued, and last New Year’s Day, during a confrontation on a snowy street, they shot a racist skin [Eric Banks, vocalist with Bound for Glory] with an SKS — a bayoneted, semiautomatic assault rifle similar to an AK-47. “They blew his head to smithereens,” says Christensen.

Since then, he reports, antiracists have patrolled Portland’s downtown area, “hanging around in coffee shops and occasionally jumping somebody they perceive to be a racist.” Meanwhile, on the outskirts, the racists have been more active in the past seven weeks than they have been in years, attacking two blacks, two whites who associated with blacks, a gay and a Native American. ~ David S. Most recently, in December 2006, nearly 70 people attended a memorial party in Portland, Oregon, for Eric.

The Baldies

Anyway, in the interests of what bourgeois commentators laughingly refer to as ‘balance’, here’s an article about a skinhead crew of the mid-80s to early-90s called the Baldies, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was out of their experiences fighting boneheads that the better-known and more popular anti-racist network Anti-Racist Action formed, a network which, through many ups and downs, continues to maintain a presence in North America.

Meleah Maynard, ‘The Lost Boys: Hanging with the Baldies: An essay on anti-racism, brotherhood and righteous violence’, City Pages, Vol.12, No.478 (January 31, 1990), via RASH NorthEast, and with thanks “to Kieran of the Baldies”, Dan (RASH-NYC) and Edith:

When Max was in high school, he went to a tattoo parlor and had the word SKIN imprinted inside his lower lip. “Oh, yeah, it hurt like hell at the time,” he grimaces. Without much prompting he sets aside his burger and rolls down his lip to expose the black lettering inside. “I got it because it’s something I believe in,” he says. “Once a skin, always a skin. It’s something that will always be there. It’s a matter of pride.”

After he finishes his burger, Max thinks better of his boast. “Can you change my name in the story?” he asks. “I’m afraid my mom would get mad if she knew.” Okay — Max isn’t his real name.

Max’s friends Joe Hawkins and Gator were 16 when they organized the Baldies, an anti-racist skinhead group, five years ago. A few days later, over dinner at Chi-Chi’s, Joe, Gator, and their friend Chops talk about what the Baldies mean to them. “I think they know I’d give my life for them,” Joe says of his fellow skinheads, who currently number about 100 in the Twin Cities. “I know they’d do the same for me. I care about ’em like they’re my brothers. They’re like a replacement family for me.” He smiles and nods at Gator. Gator nods back.

Joe is an intense 20-year old with short-cropped blond hair, light blue eyes, and a loud, nervous laugh. When he speaks he stares unwaveringly into your eyes, and the effect suggests a presence much larger than his stocky frame. He talks about partying and politics interchangeably; as he fluctuates between soft-spoken steadiness and fiery tirades about social injustice, he seems much too old for his years.

Both Joe and Gator seem most comfortable when they’re talking politics. They talk about changing the racist, classist system they were brought up in; their line is strident — combining traditional Midwestern populist distrust of the System with vaguely democratic-socialist ideas about how to fix it — but even as they’re giving speeches they’re looking to each other for approval: Is this right?

They’re less eager to talk about their families and their upbringing. The other Baldies, they’re family. Joe: “When you see a big group of skinheads all dressed the same, with the same hair, you just feel so relaxed. Goddamn, that’s true love to me, man. Because more than any other group — I don’t care who you are — skinheads will stand together. You can just look at them and know they’re gonna be with you. I’m down with them, they’re down with me. It’s like they’re automatically your brothers. We’ll take care of each other, and it feels so good.

“I don’t think most people can say they have that sense of security.” Joe and Gator’s pal Chops has eight skinhead-theme tattoos on his arms, neck and torso; the letters ACAB tattooed across the knuckles of his left-hand stand for All Coppers Are Bastards. Now he chimes in: “How many people can walk into a city and know one person and then meet people who will put you up and be your brothers? It’s like that in every city I’ve been to where there’s real skinheads who are anti-racist. I’ve been put up and they’ve taken care of me while I worked my way.”

But what about the families they all came from before joining the skins? If you push a little they’ll talk about parents who divorced, and childhoods spent on welfare. But Joe and Gator insist they’re lucky compared to a lot of other kids they know. “My mom is my hero,” Joe says. “She’s a real successful lawyer.” Not by virtue of how much money she makes, he hastens to add. Because she helps people. How? He won’t elaborate; like nearly every other Baldie I talked to, he’s leery of giving enough details to allow his family to be identified. (Many didn’t want to appear in this story at all.) Joe says his own reticence stems from hate group threats his family received in the past when his real name appeared in Star-Tribune articles.

“People have this stereotype that all skinheads come from fucked up families,” he continues. “Most of their families aren’t bad, they’re just poor. Mine was real poor. My father left when I was two, and my mother and I were alone on welfare for five years until she married my stepfather. She was trying to make something of herself and make a better life for both of us. I remember that shit and I’m real proud of her. She beat the system, and now she helps people with legal problems work things out. Whether they’ve got money or not.”

Unlike Joe and Gator, Chops really hasn’t known much family besides the Baldies. At first he won’t say anything at all about it. He won’t disclose his age, or where he’s from, but little by little the story emerges anyway. His parents kicked him out of the house after he started using drugs in elementary school (“I didn’t wanna leave. I still wanna go home, you know”), and he’s spent the last several years bouncing between jails, reform schools, and lots of temporary jobs.

“I was having a lot of problems with drugs back then,” he says of the days after his parents kicked him out. “So I checked myself into treatment, and then I was straight for two and a half years. But I lost that again. But I’ve always held true to my beliefs and been true to my people, even though I always failed myself.”

Chops is doing okay for himself right now. He’s got a roommate to share expenses, and lately he’s had good luck landing factory work through a local temp agency. He hasn’t spoken to his dad in several years, and he’s only talked to his mom four times since he was kicked out. “I really want to see my sister,” he says at one point. Even after I moved out, I still took care of her as best as my situation allowed. She’s 17 now, and she’s working and doing pretty good. She’s got clothes now, and food, and she’s got a way to school, cuz I’m gonna sell her my car.

“She’s gonna finish high school and try to go to college. She knows I’ll beat the hell out of her if she fools around with anybody or drops out of school.”

When they’re not riding bikes, listening to music, or working righteous violence against yuppies or the small contingent of racist skinheads from East St. Paul, the Baldies like to hang in the Uptown neighborhood. Their rough appearance and air of machismo makes them intimidating to a lot of Uptowners. That’s okay with them; as Joe puts it, “We’re an army for a righteous cause, and the best thing an army can do is look intimidating.”

But they hate it when people confuse them with racist skinheads, a smaller group that’s nonetheless gotten far more media attention. “The media has created kind of a mass hysteria over nothing,” Joe fumes. “News 11, for godsakes, those morons. They showed a group of about eight of us and two of us were black, one was Oriental, and another was Native American, and they labeled us Nazi skinheads. I mean, how ignorant can you be?”

The skinhead movement began in Britain in the late 1960s, the product of a cross-cultural merger between English working class mods and West Indian blacks who called themselves rude boys. The rude boys were into ska, a precursor of reggae that fused American R&B with Caribbean rhythms. The mods were into R&B; their look was clean but tough — not so different from the Baldies hanging out uptown right now.

Whether you are a neo-Nazi or anti-racist, the dress code goes something like this: heavy jeans or work pants — sometimes held up by suspenders — button-down shirts (usually Fred Perry), black Doc Marten workboots (“Dr Marten” is the name of an English boot with reinforced toes). Finally, there is their trademark short-cropped hair. Besides being tough to grab in a fight, the short hair also served in the beginning to distinguish skins from hippies.

“It was almost a kind of anti-hippie movement,” Joe explains. “They didn’t like the style or the long hair. The short hair showed they took pride in their appearance. The hippies didn’t. I’m not saying they were wrong or anything; they just didn’t.

“You know they did create some change, but ultimately they had to realize they had to work within the system to effect any real change. Their, ‘Oh, we can have peace and love and go against our country and everybody can let all their hair grow and we’ll all have love-ins,’ that didn’t work. They were basically out there saying America sucks, and America doesn’t suck. The system sucks. I mean, I’m pro-Am to the point where I love my country and it’s gonna be here for a long time. But we’re gonna fight to make it better.”

The ’70s brought division to the traditional skinhead movement in Britain, as the economic woes of the time began to erode the group from within. “It got so there were a lot of working-class kids out of work and extremely frustrated with what was going on. That was when it became easy for them to start blaming their problems on the immigrants, who were mostly minorities,” Joe says.

Skinhead culture made little impression on the American imagination until punk came along in the late 1970s. But punks who shaved their heads weren’t true skins, Gator says. “Punk is different. It’s more anti-establishment and stuff like that. Skinheads have pride in their country,” Gator says.

Joe nods, “Skinheads believe it’s their country, not the rich people’s. That’s why a lot of skinheads wear the flag; they mean the flag is theirs. I’m proud of the American working class, but I don’t hold any allegiance to this government. I don’t believe in all that.”

Joe says the problem is that the leaders in this country don’t know or care what the people need. “I was watching Dan Quayle and George Bush on television during the elections and they kept saying that they knew what ‘America needed.’ How do they know that? They’ve never fucking been there, man. They don’t know what it’s like to be poor. They don’t have any idea, and they don’t care. You know the government hates us. They don’t wanna see us unified because that means the working class will have power and could challenge the system, right?”

“Yeah,” echoes Chops. “That would mean the 5 percent who own 50 percent of the world would be challenged by the working class rising up to meet them. They don’t wanna see that, they don’t wanna see that at all. That’s why the boys in blue are always on us, because they’re the foot soldiers for the rich. They’re just the lackeys. Their job is the subjugation of the working class, to keep the poor down.”

It’s not just the cops, Joe repeats, it’s the system: “I’ve been straight for five years. The reason [I had problems] is because drugs and alcohol are not controlled in this country well enough. Why? Because it serves the government’s purpose of control. What better for the government than for Joe Blow to go out every night and take care of his frustrations with a few beers? That will work on his sense of reality, wear him down. Perfect. If you can keep people out of a sense of reality all the time, you won’t have to worry about them.”

The most conspicuous rap against the Baldies is their penchant for violence. They beat up a lot of people. But not randomly, they insist; it’s part of the program. “There’s a place and time for violence and it has to be righteous,” Joe says, looking down at the table. “I mean, I’m not just gonna go fight somebody. We’ve made mistakes, but — well, we’ve made a lot of mistakes. We’re only human. But I don’t want normal people to be afraid of me. They’ve got nothing to fear from me. Except for Nazis, I give everybody respect that gives me respect. You be good to me, I’ll be good to you. I want to get along with people. You know?”

Joe stops and Gator takes over, emphasizing that violence is righteous when you’re fighting for a cause: “Fighting racism is righteous. We don’t condone violence unless it’s righteous.”

So it’s righteous to beat up Nazis because they’re racist. Joe and Gator also agree that it’s all right to bash drug dealers because they “undermine the working class mission by taking them down with drugs.” As for other kinds of violence, Gator says earnestly, “We really are trying to stop the unrighteous fighting. We don’t wanna fight anybody but the Nazis, really.”

And the yuppies, sort of. They both know this is tougher to defend, but the Baldie crusade for betterment of the working class gets tiresome; real results are hard to come by. There are times when just punching a cocky yuppie in the face warms a Baldie’s heart. “Hey, I’m not gonna lie to you,” Joe agrees. “We’re kids. We make mistakes sometimes, you know. But that’s just part of growing up. You have your big drunk jocks who come out of Figlio’s and have heard how tough skinheads are, and they think they’ve got something to prove by fighting us. Same with yuppies downtown. I’m not gonna back down to a yuppie.”

When yuppies heckle Joe, “I’ll let them strike the first blow, but they’re gonna be on the ground real quick. I think they’re scum. I guess I can’t say that about all of them, but their attitudes are generally bad. All they care about is being rich and acquiring as much as they can and showing it off. They don’t care about sexism or racism or anything but themselves and I just don’t have time for that. They’re like bugs clogging up a fan.”

Not everybody understands the Baldies mission the way they do. “This guy asked me once if I would beat a guy up for $100,” Joe says. “He said, ‘Hey, what would you do to somebody for $100? Break his arm, maybe?’ That’s just like somebody saying ‘Hi, I think you’re really ignorant. Would you be a thug for me?’ That’s just not what we’re about. That’s not what I wanna be. I have respect for violence. People fear violence in this city, but the reality is you can either cower from it or live with it. Cuz it’s not gonna go away. We skinheads are just a reflection of inner-city life. We were created from the inner-city underclass, and the violence you lay on us was already there. But there’s respect and dignity, too. We have to get along because we’re all in this together. The whole saying is ‘United and Strong’. It means everybody. Not just blacks and whites, but everybody — if we ever want to have a decent society.”

Righteous or not, the Baldies are just another gang in the eyes of the cops. “My basic feeling about the skinheads is that they’re all equally violent,” says Gang Unit officer Mike Schoeben. “It seems that even the non-racist ones have a philosophy of life that says if you are somehow above the working class or part of the establishment, then they don’t like you. That is their form of prejudice.

“We’ve classified them as a white gang but it’s still hard to get a handle on who they are really. They do fit our criteria, though: dressing alike, same philosophy, and fighting among themselves, you know.”

Bring up the word “gang” around Joe and his voice gets shrill: “We are not a gang. We don’t do drugs and we don’t sell drugs. We don’t carry weapons and we don’t commit crimes. If you deal and you’re a Baldie, you’re out. We just won’t tolerate it. I mean the only crimes we condone are righteous acts of violence. Those are necessary things. Our relationship with the police is an example of something that could use a hell of a lot of improvement,” he says. Gator and Joe both claim to know Baldies who’ve been picked up by cops Uptown and driven down to the banks of the Mississippi, where they were called names like “nigger lover” and “communist” and thrown out of the squad car. Says Joe: “I know this guy who had his legs kicked out from under him by one cop while his partner kicked him in the chest and said not to come around Uptown for a long time unless he wanted more of the same.”

They say a few cops, mostly minorities, give them a break out of sympathy with that they stand for. “Some of the minority cops give us a lot more room, because they know what we’re about. Like if there’s a fight between us and the Nazis, they’ll say, “Okay, are there any Baldies here?” and we’ll say ‘yeah,’ and they’ll let us go and arrest the Nazis. But that doesn’t happen very often.”

Ironically, a lot of the people the Baldies are currently looking to bash were once part of their fold. In the beginning, the Baldies were just a bunch of adolescent guys looking to belong to something; almost everyone was welcome. “There weren’t any Nazis around here in the beginning,” says Joe, “but about six or seven months later a lot of kids started shaving their heads and hanging out with us. But they were dorks, man. They didn’t know what it was all about, so we kicked ’em out. That’s how the White Knights (the first local group of neo-Nazi skins) basically started.

“We tried to talk to them and educate them for a while, but they were going around in groups attacking minorities. I mean, like seven guys with baseball bats attacking one lone Indian or black man. We just got sick of it, and we told them that every time we saw them we were gonna bash them and we did. They were totally disbanded within two weeks.” But the White Knights soon regrouped, dressing the same way as their anti-racist counterparts but espousing white pride and racial violence. Joe estimates there are 20 or 30 [boneheads] in the Twin Cities now, but only 10 or so who are very active.

Though the Minneapolis / St. Paul metro has nowhere near the hate crime statistics of cities like Los Angeles or Chicago, it’s had its share of [bonehead] attacks. Last year a group of youths identified as [boneheads] beat a 14-year-old South Minneapolis boy with a wooden stick wrapped in barbed wire. According to police reports, the boy and several friends were playing basketball in a backyard on Emerson and 32nd when one of them exchanged words with one of the suspects. The man returned minutes later with five or six others, shouting racial slurs.

Just a few months earlier, a 24-year old man was chased by at least four Nazi skinheads after they saw him walking to Williams Nightclub in Uptown. Sidney Payton told the Star-Tribune that he was walking to the club about 11:00 on a Saturday night when the group began chasing him carrying a hammer and a board and shouting, “Hey, look at that nigger over there! Get the nigger!”

Neo-nazi skinheads are the fastest growing hate group in America, says Morton Ryweck, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council Anti-Defamation League of Minnesota and the Dakotas. In November 1987, the League estimated the neo-Nazi skins population at “several hundred.” Those numbers have since grown to over 3,000 members in 30 states.

Many Nazi skinheads have been recruited by such well-known hate groups as the Ku Klux Klan and White Aryan Resistance (WAR), whose membership has thinned over the last decade. One of the principal figures behind the revitalization of hate groups is a 50-year old TV repairman from Fallbrook, California, named Tom Metzger. As former Grand Dragon of California’s Ku Klux Klan and leader of [WAR], Metzger is one of the most visible hatemongers in the nation.

He is also one of the most powerful, for in perfecting and preaching his own brand of bigotry, Metzger has also mastered the art of recruiting. He chooses his boot-boys carefully; most of them share a generalized rage at the world and a need to belong. Couching his message in the rhetoric of white power pride, Metzger is able to lure not only bona fide racists, but many of the same youths who might as easily have joined a group like the Baldies. But instead of railing at oppressive government, Metzger preaches about a world where the future of the white ruling class is threatened by racial integration. He and his son John tell their followers that violence and bigotry actually amount to self-defense against the Jews and people of color trying to wrest away control of the nation.

Many of these kids, Gator says, don’t even understand the racism in what they’re doing. “A lot of these guys,” he says, “all they do is get up in the morning and look in the mirror and say, ‘Yeah, white pride!’ and go out there. It’s amazing how many of these Nazi kids have been kicked out of their home, things like that. The white power movement acts like it’s giving these little kids what they need. The leaders tell them they love them and care about them, and these kids just get sucked in.”

In citing their growing numbers, Ryweck is also quick to point out that neo-Nazi skinheads are not a major force in Minnesota. He adds that the media has created the alarmist atmosphere over the racist skinhead threat, because they fail to distinguish between the two groups of skins.

Sitting at a table in Chi-Chi’s downtown, Chops pulls on my sleeve. He looks overcome with self-consciousness. “Hey,” he says, “Am I dressed okay to be in here?” He’s wearing jeans, a black t-shirt, and a black flight jacket.

Joe tries to reassure him by making a joke of it: “Shit, man, there’s crumbs on my chair.” He makes a dismissive gesture. Chops doesn’t seem reassured. “Man, I’m sitting two feet from a fuckin’ fountain”.

After Chops is finally assured that they’ll serve him in spite of his clothes, I ask all three of them what they see themselves doing in a few years. What about girlfriends, families of their own?

“I’ve had some serious relationships,” Joe volunteers. “I had one for about a year and a half, and it’s really hard. Quite honestly, it didn’t work out because I’m a skinhead. It’s a really big part of my life, and she didn’t get it.”

Gator giggles. “It’s the same for me,” he says. “If I want to go out with a girl, it’s to have fun, and if I have a hard time it’s like… later. I just wanna have fun. This is kinda like a job, being a Baldie. And it’s hard, cuz we don’t have leaders, so we have to do everything ourselves.”

Chops isn’t quite so serious. He’s got his girl’s name tattooed on his chest, and he likes to go dancing. “It’s just good music and fun to me a lot of the time,” he says of the Baldie life. “I like listening to International Jet Set a lot (they mean the English Beat- ed.). They’re a ska band — a really good two-tone sound. You can talk about skinheads being crusaders and everything, but when they get together the first thing they do is talk about music, what concerts they’ve seen and stuff. And they trade things with each other, like records. The thing I’d tell people about skinheads is that if they see them, they shouldn’t be afraid. They should just walk up and tell ’em where the good parties are.”

Joe knows the Baldie life can’t stay the same forever. “I realize there’s gonna be a time when I get older and I’m gonna have people that I care about, and who care about me, and the risk just won’t be worth it. Right now I’m going to school and I’m real interested in social work. I’m getting a humanities background. I still want to do something that involves fighting racism when I get older. And even if I’m not working in a factory or something like that, I still want to be doing something that contributes to the working class, because that’s where my roots are. That’s where I came from.”

Who do they think they’re fooling? Angarsk, Ilya Borodaenko, and the IUEC

Update : More Attacks on Anti-Fascists in Angarsk, Russia, UCSJ, July 25, 2007:

“Within days of a fatal neo-Nazi attack on anti-fascists participating in an environmental protest near Angarsk, Russia (Irkutsk region), three anti-fascists were attacked in Angarsk itself, according to a July 24, 2007 report by the Sova Information Analytical Center. The attack took place on July 23. Five youths beat up three anti-fascists while warning them not to testify against the neo-Nazis who have been detained in connection with the original attack on the environmentalists’ camp.

That same day, neo-Nazis tried to beat up a different anti-fascist activist in the regional capital of Irkutsk, and in a separate incident, around 15 neo-Nazis attacked a group of youths in the center of the city with gas-powered pistols. One young woman was injured. It is not clear if the latter attack had anything to do with the Angarsk incident.”

ANGARSK: More “Atoms for Peace”

Angarsk is a small industrial town in south-eastern Siberia, established in 1948, and home to The International Uranium Enrichment Centre. The IUEC was established in May of this year, but was first announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in July 2006, just prior to the G8 Summit in St Petersburg (see Sergei Kirienko Briefing Note Saturday July 15, 2006).

The Angarsk enrichment centre, would, according to … IAEA officials, be established in conjunction with Kazakhstan, which has copious supplies of natural uranium. The enrichment technology would, however, belong exclusively to Russia, officials in Moscow were quick to point out…

It is presumed that after the creation of the International Centre, countries that wish to develop nuclear energy will be able to obtain enriched uranium without using their own technology…

Radioactive waste – especially uranium hexafluoride waste – is produced during the process of enriching natural uranium, creating so-called uranium tailings. Over years of development of the Russian nuclear industry, thousands of tons of uranium hexafluoride waste have accumulated. A significant portion of this waste is already located on the territory of the Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Combine (AECC), where the International Uranium Enrichment Centre is planned to be built. The Angarsk combine is located merely 30 kilometres from the Siberian city of Irkutsk and 100 kilometres from Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest lake… ~ International uranium enrichment plant in Siberia to attract more radwaste to Russia, Vera Ponomareva, Bellona, March 28, 2007

In addition to enriching uranium from Russia and the Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, the Centre promises to Make Benefit Uzbekistan and a number of other countries, both now and in the future. According to Bellona, “potential partners… are Japan, India, Iran, and African nations” as well as South Korea. More generally, an analysis of the ‘International Outlook’ for ‘Nuclear Power in Russia’ by the Australian Uranium Association Ltd (Briefing Paper #62, July 2007) claims that:

Overall there is increasing acceptance of the need to press ahead with nuclear energy in Russia while expanding the country’s role internationally at both the front and the back end of the fuel cycle.

Russia’s future international role will be built on its reputation over the last decade as a reliable commercial provider of fuel-related services. It is now engaged with international markets in nuclear energy, well beyond its traditional eastern European client states. With the consolidation of western nuclear fuel cycle vendors, the competition may be welcomed.

President Putin’s Global Nuclear Infrastructure Initiative was announced early in 2006. This is in line with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 2005 proposal for Multilateral Approaches to the Nuclear Fuel Cycle (MNA) and with the US Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP). The head of Rosatom said that he envisages Russia hosting four types of international nuclear fuel cycle service centres (INFCCs) as joint ventures financed by other countries. These would be secure and maybe under IAEA control. The first is an International Uranium Enrichment Centre (IUEC) – one of four or five proposed worldwide…

The pilot international enrichment centre (IUEC) was inaugurated at the end of 2006 in collaboration with Kazakhstan, and in March 2007 the IAEA agreed to set up a working group and continue developing the proposal. In April 2007 Armenia declared an interest in joining it. Ukraine is also reported to be interested. The centre is to provide new nuclear power states with assured supplies of low-enriched uranium for power reactors, giving them equity in the project, but without allowing them access to the enrichment technology. Russia will maintain majority ownership. IUEC will sell both enrichment services (SWU) and enriched uranium product.

The existing enrichment plant at Angarsk — the smallest of three Siberian plants — will feed the IUEC and accordingly has been removed from the category of “national strategic installations”. In February 2007 the IUEC was entered into the list of Russian nuclear facilities eligible for implementation of IAEA safeguards. Legislation is needed to separate the facility from the defence sector and open it to international inspection, as well as providing for a shareholding structure for other countries involved with the centre.

Development of the IUEC at Angarsk will be in three phases:

1. Use part of the existing capacity in cooperation with Kazatomprom and under IAEA supervision;
2. Expand capacity (perhaps double) with funding from new partners;
3. Full internationalisation with involvement of many customer nations under IAEA auspices.

Anti-fascist / Anti-nuclear

As noted previously, in mid-July, and following a series of protests and representations to state authorities, a small number of environmental and peace activists, including members of Autonomous Action — Irkutsk and Baikal Environmental Wave, established a camp near the Centre in order to protest its development. The media reportage of the assault on the camp which soon followed is revealing, both for the manner in which even basic facts may be disputed, but also of the underlying ideological commitments which govern reporting. Thus the man murdered by the attackers, Ilya Borodaenko, is variously described as being 20 (Itar-Tass), 21 (RIA Novosti) and 26 (BBC) years old, while the camp itself is described as having been established by Autonomous Action, Defending the Rainbow (AP) and Antifa (BBC).

Intriguingly, after first claiming that the attack had no ‘political’ motivation and was a mere act of ‘hooliganism’, local authorities now appear to admit that the gang — or parts of the gang at least — had a political motive after all, and were in fact drawn from the local neo-Nazi milieu. That said, state prosecutors maintain that the motive for the attack was revenge for a previous assault on a local bonehead two weeks ago. Spokesperson Alexander Semyonov further insults the memory of Ilya by impugning both his and the camp’s credentials and motivations: an insult further compounded by Vladimir Slivyak, leader of a mob called ‘Ecodefense!’, who denies that the group attacked by the fascists had any right to claim any such motivation; an observation based, presumably, on the understanding that fascism is, in fact, compatible with ecological preservation. Perhaps not coincidentally, Slivyak claims his group will establish another protest camp in Angarsk later in the week…

Protesters Victims of Boneheads’ Revenge
Nikolaus von Twickel and Svetlana Osadchuk
The Moscow Times
July 23, 2007

A deadly assault on anti-nuclear protesters in Siberia over the weekend was a revenge attack against anti-fascists who beat up a [bonehead] two weeks ago, prosecutors said Monday. Thirteen suspects have been detained in connection with the attack, in which masked assailants armed with metal rods and baseball bats raided the protesters’ forest camp near the city of Angarsk early Saturday morning, Alexander Semyonov, spokesman for the Irkutsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, said by telephone Monday. One activist, Ilya Borodayenko, 26, died of severe head injuries in a hospital a few hours later.

Witnesses said the attackers shouted nationalist slogans and identified their targets as members of the vocal anti-fascist group called Antifa. Semyonov said Antifa activists had beaten up a [bonehead] two weeks ago and that Saturday’s rampage was a revenge attack. Hostilities between [fascists] and Antifa activists throughout the country have been simmering in recent years, occasionally boiling over into violent encounters, video footage of which has been posted on the Internet.

Some of the 13 suspects have been charged with hooliganism and manslaughter, Semyonov said. Local police said 20 suspects had been detained, Interfax reported.

Two other activists were still being treated in a clinic Monday, Igor Kozlov of the group Autonomous Action, which organized the camp, said by telephone from Irkutsk. Kozlov said that around 20 activists had been protesting the Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Plant and plans to make its operations international.

Russia is planning a uranium enrichment center at the plant, which has previously produced uranium fuel for nuclear power plants. Environmentalists say this will bring a massive increase in the amount of nuclear waste.

The authorities cast doubt on the victims’ environmental credentials, however. “When law enforcement officers examined the camp, no environmental activists were there,” Semyonov said. Furthermore, Semyonov said, some of the attackers probably lacked political motives and merely joined in spontaneously, noting that that they had taken mobile phones and personal belongings of the victims.

Vladimir Slivyak, co-chairman of the Russian environmental group Ecodefense!, said the camp had nothing to do with the Russian environmentalist movement at all. “This was a fight with anti-fascists, and it is very bad for us if now the media is reporting that fascists have been attacking environmentalists,” Slivyak said in a telephone interview.

Kozlov dismissed Slivyak’s criticism, saying that being an environmental activist does not require being tied to a specific organization but rather depended on one’s personal convictions. “Our protest was clearly aimed at the Angarsk plant,” he said.

Slivyak said Ecodefense planned a much bigger camp, with up to 100 participants, at the plant later this week. His organization is considering moving the venue further away from Angarsk to reduce the risk of attacks, he said.

Neo-Nazis behind attack on nuclear protestors in Siberia — police
RIA Novosti
July 24, 2007

IRKUTSK, July 24 (RIA Novosti) – Police said Tuesday an attack on an environmental camp in southeast Siberia, which left one person dead and seven injured, was carried out by members of a local neo-Nazi group. Yet another suspect in the attack was detained Tuesday. Police said Monday they detained 20 suspects. Prosecutors have issued eight arrest warrants, and another five are pending. Police said earlier they are investigating the incident as “intentional grievous bodily harm resulting in death.” On Saturday, attackers wearing face masks and wielding baseball bats and metal rods raided a camp of environmental activists in the city of Angarsk, near Lake Baikal, who were there protesting nuclear waste processing at a Siberian chemical plant. Police said the suspects were young people under 22, primarily students and unemployed. There were 21 environmentalists in the camp. Environmentalists have previously protested against the state-owned Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Plant, which processes uranium for the nuclear industry.

Statement from survivors of fascist assault in Siberia

Update : In keeping with the general role of state/corporate media in Russia, Itar-Tass has reported that local police have declared that there was no political motivation for the murder of Ilya Borodaenko, nor for the assaults as a whole (Young man killed, seven injured in attack on environmentalists), which were committed by hooligans. The article proceeds to state that Rosatom, the Russian state agency which manages the Russian nuclear industry, is shocked at the murder, and that the uranium enrichment facility at Angarsk is completely safe and always has been. Igor Domnikov, Sergey Novikov, Iskandar Khatloni, Sergey Ivanov, Adam Tepsurgayev, Eduard Markevich, Natalya Skryl, Valery Ivanov, Aleksei Sidorov, Dmitry Shvets, Paul Klebnikov, Magomedzagid Varisov and Anna Politkovskaya were not available for comment, as they are all dead. Russian police have promised to get to the bottom of who was responsible for the murder of Borodaenko just as soon as they’ve established who was responsible for the murder of the thirteen journalists…

UK Indymedia appears to be the best source for info: Activist Killed As Nazis Attack Anti-Nuclear Camp In Siberia

July 21, 2007, Indymedia via @-Infos:

On July 21 at dawn our camp was brutally attacked. Some scumbags suddenly tumbled down our tents, burned down and stole our things, beat us sleeping in our tents with bats, hammers, cudgels, legs. The same time they were spitefully swearing at Antifa. The terrible and considered cruelty of their attack makes no doubt that it was not a work of some ordinary hooligans, but a thought over action of nazis. It is necessary to note a long (more than half an hour) absence of the police at a place of the crime, and the subsequent attempts of the police to deny an existence of nazi groupings in Angarsk, and pressing requests of the representatives of the police and the Office of Public Prosecutor to participants of the camp not to make a scandal and to avoid any communication with journalists. But we can not be silent because an indignation and a desire of a retribution overflows us. Last night we have lost our comrade: Ilya Borodaenko [pictured above], an anarchist, a member of the Autonomous Action from Nakhodka has died because of a craniocerebral trauma (incompatible with life) and violent beating. That night he and two other participants of the camp were on duty and Ilya was the first who faced nazi scum. Some [of] our comrades were sent to the hospital in grave condition (with concussions of the brain and fractures of arms and legs). Our tents are cut and fired, flags are stolen.

However we will forget nothing and we won’t forgive Ilya Borodaenko’s death to his murderers (irrespective of successes or failures of the official repressive system investigating the crime). We won’t stop activity of our environmental protest camp, we won’t stop our struggle against fascist plague and nuclear mafia, against [authoritarian] ideas and racist dregs, against all that destroys both the nature and human life and dignity. Today we grieve. Tomorrow we will continue our struggle.

MOSCOW, July 21 (Reuters) — A Russian environmentalist was beaten to death, and seven others were injured Saturday when a group with iron bars and baseball bats attacked their camp near a nuclear waste processing plant in Siberia. The Russian news media reported that up to 15 people shouting fascist slogans attacked the environmentalists, who were living in the camp to protest nuclear processing in Angarsk, a city near Lake Baikal, more than 3,000 miles east of Moscow. The Angarsk plant was chosen last year as the site for a new uranium enrichment facility. The Russian nuclear regulatory agency condemned the attack. Environmentalists have not previously been targets of violent attacks in Russia, where skinhead gangs have assaulted and killed people from ethnic and religious minority groups in the past. The Itar-Tass news agency said the man killed Saturday was a 20-year-old from Nakhodka, an eastern port city. A spokesman for the Interior Ministry, Valery V. Gribakin, said that 13 suspects had been questioned and four people had been arrested.

Neo-Nazis attack environmental protest camp in Siberia; murder one, wound others

Update : The death of at least one environmentalist, a 20 or 21 year old comrade, appears to have been confirmed by agencies, and Russian authorities are already in denial, the catch-all crime of ‘hooliganism’ being applied in this case as it has been in the case of literally scores of other assaults by fascists. The real question, of course, given a previous assault upon the camp, and the fact that protesters were targeting a lucrative and highly sensitive nuclear industry development, is to what extent were authorities themselves aware of or implicated in the murder of the young man and the destruction of the camp? Obviously, such an investigation would best be handled by an experienced Russian investigative journalist, but thanks to other acts of ‘hooliganism’, they’re very thin on the ground in Putin’s Russia…

1) Siberian environmentalists camp attacked
RussiaToday
July 21, 2007

A criminal investigation has been launched into an attack on an environmentalists’ camp in Russia’s Irkutsk region. One man was killed during the assault, and several others were taken to hospital. The camp was established in July near the city of Angarsk to protest against nuclear waste re-processing at a local chemicals plant.

Maksim Nikulin, an environmentalist from the camp, says the attackers were [boneheads].

“Around 0500 local time [boneheads] attacked our environmentalists’ camp. They cried out fascist mottos. There were some 15 to 20 young men. They started to shoot from airguns. But everybody was asleep except the three on duty. Attackers also had clubs and stones. One man has died in a hospital and two are still in a grave condition. Around eight have been injured – some quite severely – and they needed doctor’s help. We expected such an attack, and on the night there were three men on duty instead of the usual two. But it didn’t help,” said the activist.

2) Attack on nuclear demonstrators in Russia leaves 1 dead

MOSCOW: Attackers wielding metal pipes raided a camp of environmental protesters in Siberia early Saturday morning, leaving one dead and several injured, a spokeswoman for the local administration said.

Eight demonstrators were hospitalized after the attack, one of whom later died from his injuries, according to the spokeswoman for the Angarsk city administration who was not authorized to give her name.

A criminal investigation had been opened in connection with the attack, she said.

More than 20 demonstrators had been camped out by a reservoir near Angarsk, about 4,200 kilometers (2,600 miles) east of Moscow, to protest nuclear waste processing at the state-owned Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Plant, Russian news agencies reported, citing local police.

Two suspects in the attack have been detained and 13 others identified, the RIA Novosti agency reported [below], citing a local police source.

Police spokesman Valery Gribakin was quoted by the ITAR-Tass news agency as suggesting that theft had appeared to be a motive for the attack. Police confiscated a rucksack and a telephone that had belonged to the protesters from those detained, he said.

“Investigators are inclined to believe that the attack was motivated by hooliganism with the aim of stealing property,” he said.

Angarsk is located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the southern tip of Lake Baikal, the world’s largest freshwater lake and a symbol for some of Russia’s environmental heritage.

Russia is working to set up a uranium enrichment center at the electrolysis plant to enrich uranium from Kazakhstan.

President Vladimir Putin proposed setting up the center in 2006 as a way to provide uranium fuel to nations intent on building nuclear power plants while making sure they don’t develop weapons programs.

Enriched uranium supplied by the center would be made available only to countries which have undertaken the appropriate nonproliferation commitments. These would include a pledge of no use for nuclear explosive purposes and acceptance of International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.

3) Russian environmentalist beaten to death

A Russian environmentalist was beaten to death and seven others wounded on Saturday when a group armed with iron bars and baseball bats attacked their camp near a nuclear waste processing plant in Siberia.

Russian media reported up to 15 people shouting fascist slogans attacked the environmentalists, who were living in the camp to protest against nuclear processing in the city of Angarsk near Lake Baikal, 5,000 km east of Moscow.

“One of the injured died in intensive care as a result of the attack,” Ekho Moskvy radio station quoted one of the environmental activists, Olga Kozlova, as saying.

Another resident of the camp, Marina Popova, said the attackers shouted slogans against anti-fascists.

“From that we can conclude they were Nazis or [boneheads]”, she told the Vesti-24 television channel, blood seeping through a bandage wrapped around her head.

Environmentalists have not previously been the target of violent attacks in Russia [NB. This is incorrect], where [boneheads] gangs have assaulted and killed people from ethnic and religious minority groups in the past.

Itar-Tass news agency said the man killed on Saturday was a 20-year-old from the far eastern port city of Nakhodka.

Thirteen attackers had been identified and four had already been arrested, said Interior Ministry spokesman Valery Gribakin.

“Those arrested denied any involvement with any extremist youth group,” Gribakin was quoted by Ekho Moskvy as saying.

4) Two camp attack suspects detained
ITAR-TASS
July 21, 2007

MOSCOW, July 21 (Itar-Tass) — The identities of 13 camp attack suspects have been established. Two of them are detained, the Russian Interior Ministry’s spokesman Valery Gribakin told Itar-Tass.

According to the Interior Ministry’s information, a group of about 15 persons attacked a camp of environmentalists near the Yelovskoye Reservoir in the municipal area of Angarsk at about 05:00 local time on Saturday morning. The attackers armed with wooden bats and sticks began to beat people in the camp. Eight were injured. One of them died in a hospital later, the spokesman said.

An official investigation into the case has been opened.

Best forces have been mobilised to investigate the crime, the spokesman noted.

Several versions are under consideration. However, a possibility that extremist youth group members committed the attack is ruled out. Neither the detained persons nor other suspects have any connection with such organisations, Gribakin said.

Everything will be done to solve the case. Leading investigators from the Irkutsk police department and specialists from the Interior Ministry’s main department for the federal district are in the group working at the site, he added.

5) One dead, seven injured in attack on environmentalists in Siberia
RIA Novosti

IRKUTSK, July 21 (RIA Novosti)) – One person was killed and at least seven were injured in an attack on an environmentalist camp in the Irkutsk Region in southeastern Siberia early Saturday, a local police source said. Police said at least 15 assailants raided a tent camp at the Yelovskoye Reservoir near the city of Angarsk occupied by a group of protesters against reprocessing of nuclear waste at a local plant. “The attack on a tent camp occurred at 5.10 am Moscow time (1.10 am GMT) Saturday. At least 15 attackers raided the camp occupied by 21 environmentalists,” the source said. A 21-year-old man was killed and seven people were hospitalized with injuries,” he said. Police said they have detained two suspects in the assault and identified at least 13 others. A criminal investigation has been launched in connection with the attack.

Russian Boneheads: Putin’s Little Helpers

On July 21 at around 5am local time (July 20 9pm GMT) neo-Nazi skinheads attacked an anti-nuclear protest camp in Angarsk, Siberia. Established on July 15, the camp has previously been raided by police, and those involved apparently had some advance warning with regards to this latest assault, and made some arrangements for three people to guard it. In the event, however, the boneheads outnumbered those guarding the site by more than 3 to 1 and, armed with iron bars, knives and pneumatic pistols, were able to launch attacks upon people sleeping in tents. A number of victims had their arms broken, and at least two activists received serious wounds, one with fractures to his feet (and/or legs?) and the other to his skull: he later died in hospital(?). All camping tents were destroyed by arson, and in addition some personal belongings were stolen.

The camp was jointly established by Autonomous Action–Irkutsk and Baikal Ecological Wave. The phone number for the camp is +7924 621 2465.
