Josh Wolf : Integrity = Jail

Josh Wolf, 24, “a dark-haired fireplug of a man who sees the world through the lenses of an activist, an anarchist and a filmmaker who posts his videos on the Web” has been sent to jail by US District Judge William Alsup for refusing to compromise his journalistic and political integrity by co-operating with a grand jury and supplying them with footage of anarchist protesters. As Laura Locke, writing for Time magazine (August 3, 2006) notes, “Wolf is the first blogger to be targeted by federal authorities for refusing to cooperate with a grand jury”.

According to The New York Times :

‘Blogger Jailed After Defying Court Orders’
Jesse McKinley
August 2, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 1 — A freelance journalist and blogger was jailed on Tuesday after refusing to turn over video he took at an anticapitalist protest here last summer and after refusing to testify before a grand jury looking into accusations that crimes were committed at the protest.

The freelancer, Josh Wolf, 24, was taken into custody just before noon after a hearing in front of Judge William Alsup of Federal District Court. Found in contempt, Mr. Wolf was later moved to a federal prison in Dublin, Calif., and could be imprisoned until next summer, when the grand jury term expires, said his lawyer, Jose Luis Fuentes.

Earlier this year, federal prosecutors subpoenaed Mr. Wolf to testify before a grand jury and turn over video from the demonstration, held in the Mission District on July 8, 2005. The protest, tied to a Group of 8 meeting of world economic vandals in Scotland, ended in a clash between demonstrators and the San Francisco police, with one officer sustaining a fractured skull.

A smoke bomb or a firework was also put under a police car, and investigators are looking into whether arson was attempted on a government-financed vehicle.

Mr. Wolf, who posted some of the edited video on his Web site, www.joshwolf.net, and sold some of it to local television stations, met with investigators, who wanted to see the raw video. But Mr. Wolf refused to hand over the tapes, arguing that he had the right as a journalist to shield his sources.

On Tuesday, Judge Alsup disagreed, ruling that the grand jury “has a legitimate need” to see what Mr. Wolf filmed.

Mr. Wolf, a recent college graduate, is the latest journalist to face prison time for refusing to cooperate with federal investigators. Last year, the New York Times reporter Judith Miller served nearly three months in jail after refusing to divulge her sources in the investigation of the leak of a covert C.I.A. agent’s name.

Jane Kirtley, a professor of media ethics and law at the University of Minnesota, said that although the jailing of journalists had become more common, Mr. Wolf’s case was the first she had heard of in which a blogger had been pursued and eventually jailed by federal authorities.

“There is a tendency on the part of the prosecutors to go aggressively after people not perceived to have a big gun behind them,” Ms. Kirtley said. “They are the most vulnerable links in the chain.”

While California has a so-called shield law meant to protect journalists and their sources, no such law exists at the federal level. Even if there was such a law, Ms. Kirtley said, it is unclear whether a blogger and freelancer would fall under it.

According to his Web site, Mr. Wolf has been active in his defense, holding news conferences and posting interviews and newspaper articles on his site. On Tuesday, however, the site’s last message read, “This blog will be updated sometime shortly after my hearing … wish me luck guys!”

Mr. Wolf has attracted supporters, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which introduced a resolution objecting to the federal government’s role in the investigation. The Society of Professional Journalists contributed to Mr. Wolf’s legal defense fund.

Mr. Fuentes said he had already prepared an appeal and would file it immediately. He also planned to ask for bail, though he was not certain where the money to post it would come from. “His mother has been trying to fund-raise,” Mr. Fuentes said. “But he might lose his job.”

Reporters Without Borders, among numerous others, has called for his immediate release.

The Australian media, on the other hand, has expressed its interest and solidarity by carefully avoiding making any reference to the case whatsoever.

Lucky he’s got a supportive Mum and comrades around the world then eh?

‘Poland shuts down neo-fascist website for the second time’

Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa)
August 4, 2006

Warsaw (dpa) – A Polish-language neo-fascist website inciting racial hatred and violence against individuals it labelled “enemies of the race” was shut down Friday for a second time, Poland’s Police Chief Marek Biekowski confirmed in Warsaw.

The site, hosted on a US-based server, was first shut down in early July by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at the request of Polish authorities [and against DreamHost‘s better inclinations].

But a Polish police unit dealing with cyber-crime discovered the Polish neo-fascist website had been relaunched a week later and was hosted by a server in the US city of Dallas, Texas. US-based neo-Nazis were thought to have relaunched the Polish-language site.

The site was closed a second time on Friday in cooperation with the FBI.

The neo-fascist website targeted Polish left-wing and anti-fascist political activists, ecologists, feminists, gay rights activists as well as journalists and intellectuals.

It labelled them “enemies of the race” and publish[ed] their personal details including home, work and school addresses, telephone numbers and photos online.

Police have detained several of the website’s designers and administrators in Poland, all alleged neo-fascists.

However, Polish Interior Minister Ludwig Dorn on Friday confirmed that a man suspected of the near-fatal stabbing of a 30-year-old Polish [/Jewish] anarchist was “not linked” to neo-fascist groups.

Originally the stabbing had been linked to the man being targeted on the Polish neo-fascist website.

[Possibly following Russia’s lead] Officials termed the 24-year-old suspect charged with attempted murder of the anarchist “a hooligan, not a Nazi”.

Polish police recently detained a suspect known for neo-Nazi views who allegedly attacked Poland’s Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich on the street in Warsaw in late May.

Schudrich did not suffer serious injuries in the anti-Semitic attack which was strongly condemned by senior Polish politicians including the President and the Prime Minister.

In related news, proboards has recently pulled the plug on redwatchnz‘s forum for neo-Nazi losers in New Zealand (while blogger continues its support for the project as a whole).

Your invitation to the 2006 Sydney Forum

Dr. James Saleam’s fascist Australia First Party is organising a conference to take place in Sydney on the weekend of August 26/27, but so wary of possible “disruption” to the event are they that they’ve decided to keep its location secret until the morning of the first day’s events. (The second day’s events will be taking place at the same location as last year’s conference: Saleam’s bunker at 725 Princes Highway, Tempe.) According to the organisers, the speakers at this year’s Forum, the sixth, include:

Neil Baird — a former Treasurer of NSW One Nation whose scribblings, titled ‘The News Report’, he regularly emails to other members of the Australian far right milieu;

Jim Cassidy — the current President of the NSW branch of One Nation (curiously, according to a report in The Australian, “Since February, Dr Saleam has been asked not to attend meetings of the NSW branch of One Nation. Jim Cassidy, One Nation state president, said this was because of Dr. Saleam’s past connections to “white supremacist” organisations”);

Greg Clancy — author (of a little-known and — by the sounds of it — rather silly tract called The People Smugglers (2002)) and apologist for the HoWARd Government’s policy on refugees;

Andrew Fraser — the racist formerly known as The Nutty (Associate) Professor;

James Saleam;

and “a bloody funny sheila” named Sandy Thorne, whose unique comedy stylings will be supplemented by tales based on her experiences as a screw at the Woomera and Curtin concentration camps for refugees (which she later published as Beyond the Razor Wire).

To get the venue details, interested parties will have to telephone either 0407 732 868 or 0411 669 181 after 7.30 am on the Saturday morning, August 26. The organisers — among whom ranks the German neo-Nazi Welf Herfurth — promise that plenty of time will be available for any Sydney resident to reach the venue by 9.15am for a 9.30am start.

Extract from Beyond The Razor Wire, supposedly from Sandy Thorne’s diary, Woomera, June 24 2001:

Another boat arrived at Ashmore Reef. The fighting and unrest in Main compound escalated as the Centre became crowded with more and more boat people, many of whom had no concept of queuing and taking their turn, being patient, or sharing and caring for their fellow Man. This fact, coupled with the fact that many of Main Compound’s resis had been rejected, presented an extremely volatile situation.

Many of the rejected detainees would crowd at Golf Three gate, demanding the DIMIA… manager, or the Detention Centre manager, or their lawyer, come to the gate immediately to hear their grievances, shaking their fists, smacking their fists into their palms and yelling furiously, as if they had a right. Their attitude would burr us right up, but we had to remain calm and polite. It would have done the do-gooders good, to have a bunch of angry Arabs in their faces, as we did every day. I’d think of men of my father’s and grandfather’s era – the men who’d fought in the Middle East – what would they think to see these ratbags trying to get into our peaceful country?

“Cert One Medical! Main Compound, detainee self-harm”, became an almost daily broadcast as one of them would scratch at his arm to gain attention. The ensuing melodrama from the slasher and his mates would be like an Italian opera. Then the lip-sewing began. It was a pitiful, sickening sight. That night I sat on my verandah listening to Slim Dusty and comparing the world I’d been used to, with what was going on in the Centre. No way a mother from Thargomindah or Blackall could sew her kid’s lips together… Less than five kilometres away from my flat, alien things were happening. For the thousandth time, I thanked God for giving us razor wire fences.

We all knew Main was going to boil over soon and later that night, it was on. I’d been sleeping in my uniform, expecting to be pulled out of bed any time, so when the pounding began on everyone’s doors, I was instantly awake and on my feet, pulling my boots on, ready for anything. “Main’s going off! C’Mon! Main’s going off!”

Speeding out of town, along the four ks to the Centre, the adrenalin was already pumping and increasing, as we came within sight and sound of our friends, the asylum-seekers, smashing, burning, shouting “F… A.C.M.!” “F… Australia!” over and over. The razor-wire fences were protecting the outside world from these violent people, but we had to go in and take control. There would be people in there, frightened, who wanted no part of the anarchy. I spared a thought for my friends in there. Were Laila, Mina and Masomeh, young Hamid and a few others I really liked, cowering in their dongas, or… the thought suddenly hit me with a shock… would I see them pelting rocks… at me? Mina and Masomeh – no. Hamid and Laila? Maybe… Yes, it was feasible, but highly unlikely, I liked to think.

As we rounded the corner of Admin and came into view of Main compound, the shouting and abuse hurled through the fence at us from the charming residents, was deafening. It sounded like all six hundred were after our scalps. Main was a sea of angry, yelling, spitting, swarthy whiskered faces, beneath a forest of shaking fists – a very scary sight for an unarmed person. Clutched in their fists were the weapons they had accumulated and fashioned: steel posts to ram into our knees, shards of glass, sharp pieces of tin, and knives fashioned from stolen cutlery and razors to stab us with. Their lovely veiled ladies and delightful children were ready to pelt us with the rocks and pavers they’d stacked up in heaps. Buildings were burning in the background and we could hear glass being smashed everywhere.

The kit-up room was in semi-organised crowded chaos, with officers grabbing helmets, shields, batons, elbow and kneeguards, adjusting straps and hanging flexicuffs on belts with grunts and sighs of exasperation. We all walked outside to join the others, now waiting in a formidable formation outside Operations. We could hear buildings being wrecked, Australia being condemmed, and our lives being threatened, as we lined up ready to go in. By then I felt like a leashed Doberman…

Scumfront Brisbane

The attempt by a handful of Brisbane-based boneheads and members of the Scumfront website to hold a picnic on Saturday, August 5th at the Medieval Fayre has come to nought; the shit-for-brains failing to take into account that: a) the Fayre in question is organised by United Swords; b) United Swords is in fact owned and run by an indigenous Australian from Dainggetti country and; c) neo-Nazis are scum whom everybody hates.

The Age Melbourne Writers’ Festival

I’d like to attend the following… but probably won’t as the Festival and ticket prices ($35 / $25 per session) are obviously aimed at attracting the chattering classes, members of which have a significantly higher level of ‘disposable income’ than I and other poor Melbournians do.

Don’t they realise that the poor can read? And write?

Probably not.

Ah well…

Stolen Generations or hijacked history? – a debate

Over the last twenty years, the concept of the Stolen Generations, the abduction of thousands of Aboriginal children from their families by various state authorities up until the 1970s, has slowly gained acceptance. But did it happen at all? What is the evidence? Are we exaggerating a scant few cases into a long-term and widespread policy of destroying Aboriginal families?

This is a debate about history, truth and memory between Robert Manne and Andrew Bolt on the Stolen Generations. Professor of Politics at La Trobe University, Robert Manne has written extensively on the evidence for there being Stolen Generations and the attempt by others to down play it. A popular columnist with the Herald Sun, Andrew Bolt has consistently cast doubts on the idea, calling it a ‘myth’, a construction of certain ‘stolen generations activists’. The moderator will be historian John Hirst.

6pm at Storey Hall, RMIT.

RaHoWa!

“Not White? Not Welcome!” boasted NetworkWhite.Net, the neo-Nazi website established by a bloke from Adelaide called Colin Campbell* (and David Innes’ choice of webhost).

Well, it did.

Now, however, the site is offline — for what reason(s), I’m unsure. It may, perhaps, be related to criminal charges involving the tiny neo-Nazi cult the White Crusaders Of The RaHoWa!™ (WCOTR) for it, too, has disappeared; leaving behind it very little apart from Campbell’s broken dreams…

How sad.

Now, I could be wrong, but it appears that few others joined Colin’s crusade, and the calibre of those who did says quite a lot about the nature of the ‘Church’. Thus, apart from Adelaide — which is, after all, the City of Churches — and New York, the only other country in which I can find traces of the group is in Aotearoa / New Zealand.

There, three very well-known young boneheads by the names of Dylan Luke Jensen, Brendon Rimmer and Nic Miller apparently thought that involvement in the Church was a really neat idea.

Then again, maybe not.

Of course, not only is the White Crusaders Of The RaHoWa!™ website offline, so too is David Innes’ (“Baron Von Hund”) personal website; the “Aryan Warlords” website; the “Worldwide Aryan Freedom Fighters” website; a collection of posters from the Third Reich; and a small number of other sites which are just as appealing.

In future, I suggest boneheads like Innes choose DreamHost — a company with a proven track record of facilitating the distribution of neo-Nazi propaganda.

*NB. Colin insists that his imaginary friends — Adolf, Benito, and David — address him as the “Reverend Col Campbell 3rd, Komandant WCOTR”; most people know him as a right wanker.

‘Declassified archives document ties between CIA and Nazis’
Andre Damon
wsws.org
July 27, 2006

On June 6, the US national archives released some 27,000 pages of secret records documenting the CIA’s Cold War relations with former German Nazi Party members and officials.

The files reveal numerous cases of German Nazis, some clearly guilty of war crimes, receiving funds, weapons and employment from the CIA…

The CIA documents were reviewed by Timothy Naftali, a historian with the National Archives Interagency Working Group, the government body that oversaw their declassification and release. According to an article published by Naftali, the stay-behind program was dissolved “in the wake of public concerns in West Germany about the resurgence of Neo-Nazi Groups.” Specifically, the Kibitz-15 group, led by an “unreconstructed Nazi,” became a potential source of public embarrassment for the US, as its members were broadly involved in Neo-Nazi activity.

The CIA terminated the program by 1955 and arranged for many of its contacts to be resettled in Canada and Australia. According to the documents, Australia provided funds for relocation while the CIA provided its ex-assets with a “resettlement bonus”…

And remember folks, don’t trust neo-Nazis:

Sadly, you cant trust neo-Nazis these days. The name of the party isn’t Working Peoples but “White Pride” and back in the neo-Nazi chat room – where [“John Streicher”] goes by the name “Creed of Iron” – he told the troops why he’d lied.

Had I said, “White Pride Coalition of Australia”, do you honestly think they would have even bothered reporting on us?
    -Stormfront chat room

Neo-nazi chatter Baron von Hund was not convinced.

I don’t know if “lying” is such a great tactic. Considering it is the name of your organisation/group.
    -Stormfront chat room

Ah yes, those little White lies…

Oh Canaduh…

By the looks of things (see below), Tomasz “Wanker” Winnicki may be joined by some of his neo-Nazi kameraden sooner rather than later.

But, as they say, “that’s Canada”.

In Australia, the WA DPP is too busy prosecuting Aboriginal teenagers for racial vilification to worry about prosecuting organised White supremacists such as David Innes (“Baron von Hund”), his brother Paul (“Steelcap Boot”) and partner Lilith Peterson (Stormfront Down Under); while convicted neo-Nazi criminal Ben Weerheym also remains free to spew his own special brand of racist stupidity / to spread cheer and goodwill among WA’s multi-ethnic and multi-racial population. One can only assume that the DPP believes prosecuting Aboriginal youth for racial vilification is the best way to address racial antagonism and inequality in West Australia.

Sounds a bit odd though, don’t you think? After all, WA authorities justified their introduction of this legislation as a result of the terror campaign Jack van Tongeren’s Australian Nationalists Movement conducted in the 1990s — a group which Weerheym was a member of, and a fact which he has since admitted he lied about at his trial. In fact, the WA DPP did, apparently, consider prosecuting Weerheym, but decided, for whatever reason, not to.

‘Neo-Nazi threat on judge’
Toronto Sun
July 29, 2006

LONDON, Ont. — Police in Missouri have launched an investigation into a call on a white supremacy website to kill a Canadian federal judge and an Ottawa lawyer.

“We have some letters from some people in Canada,” said Jim Hughes, chief of Kirksville, Mo., police. “We take these complaints seriously.”

Hughes said other law enforcement agencies have been consulted.

“It is too early to predict an outcome,” he said.

But, he added, the subject of the investigation is known to police.

“I would just say I have met him.”

The subject is white supremacist Alex Linder, who lives in Kirksville.

Linder runs Vanguard News Network, a U.S.-based white supremacy website.

Last week, Linder posted a message on the site that said his organization would support the killing of Federal Court of Canada Justice Konrad von Finckenstein, members of the Canadian Human Rights Commission and Ottawa lawyer Richard Warman.

“Killing Warman, ‘judge’ von Finckenstein, or any of the Jews who make up the dictatorial ‘human rights’ council . . . would be a genuine act of patriotism,” Linder wrote.

The Canadian Human Rights Commission and Warman alerted the Internet service provider that hosts the website and Kirksville police about Linder’s message and other threatening messages on his website.

The Internet service provider pulled the plug on Linder’s website Friday, but another site has carried Linder’s call for the assassinations and has even posted Warman’s address. The Internet comments were made in response to the jailing two weeks ago of London, Ontario, white supremacist Tomasz “Wanker” Winnicki.

Death threats a ‘concern’
Alex Hebert
Ottawa Sun
July 30, 2006

OTTAWA LAWYER Richard Warman is a man white supremacists love to hate and, once again, he finds himself at the centre of their rage over a recent court ruling.

Police in Missouri have launched an investigation into a call on a white supremacy website that demands the murder of Warman and a Canadian federal judge.

The posting was made in response to the jailing two weeks ago of London, Ontario, supremacist Tomasz “Wanker” Winnicki, who posted frequently on the Vanguard News Network — a U.S.-based supremacy website.

Winnicki was jailed for refusing to obey a Federal Court order prohibiting him from spreading hate messages online.

PLUG PULLED ON SITE

The site’s administrator, Alex Linder, posted a message saying his organization supports the murder of Warman, Federal Court of Canada Justice Konrad von Finckenstein and any members of the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

An Internet service provider pulled the plug on Linder’s site Friday, but some of the information made its way onto other sites, including Warman’s address.

“It’s certainly concerning,” said Warman, who has been exposing neo-Nazis whenever he can by taking them and their websites to the Canadian Human Rights Commission, which can force them to pay thousands in fines.

“I think any time you have someone on a major U.S. neo-Nazi website attempting to incite the murder of you and a federal court judge … has to be cause for concern,” said Warman.

This isn’t the first time Warman has felt the wrath of neo-Nazis in North America.

BRANDED ‘ENEMY’

Warman has been called “an enemy of free speech and enemy of freedom” and the “high priest of censorship,” has received death threats and has had his picture, address and even pictures of his parents posted online by white supremacists.

Warman told the Sun last year that a lack of action on the part of police and the Human Rights Commission has forced him to fight the cyberspace battle himself.

“What am I supposed to do? The stuff is there. Something has to be done about it,” he said. “It would be nice if the system was going after it, not me.”

Warman said he hasn’t received any threats as a result of the website post and said he’ll “be happy to keep it that way.”

Metal Militia!

‘Inspired’ by the forthcoming release of a documentary film about heavy metal, from the Department of Extremely-Late-Breaking-News comes the following:

Heavy metal adopts political, social messages in new millennium
Justin M. Norton
[Associated Press]

SAN FRANCISCO – Heavy metal singer Chris Barnes didn’t know what people would think of the anti-war song “Amerika the Brutal” he wrote after his cousin deployed to Iraq in 2003.

He heard a number of complaints – but also received supportive e-mails from American troops in the war zone.

“It kind of sent a shiver up my spine because those are the guys I didn’t want to offend by sounding anti-war,” said Barnes, vocalist for the death metal band Six Feet Under.

Other metal bands are finding similar inspiration.

Lamb of God‘s albums criticize American foreign policy. Cattle Decapitation are ardent vegetarians who use explicit album covers and songs like “Veal and the Cult of Torture” to condemn the meat industry. Serj Tankian of System of a Down is co-founder of a nonprofit organization that works on social issues.

More than three decades after Black Sabbath conjured images of the dark arts, heavy metal is growing up. The genre is increasingly incorporating social and political messages into its dense power chords.

In reality, this is nothing new. In fact, ‘grown-up’ (self-consciously ‘political’) heavy metal has been around for at least two decades. Summarising Deena Weinstein’s book (“the first real academic book on metal”), Heavy Metal: A Cultural Sociology (1991), A.S. Van Dorston writes:

[Weinstein] codes heavy metal history into a dialogic process, an ongoing historical conversation stratified into five eras. It erupts from 1969 to 1972, begins to crystallize from 1973 to 1975, reaching a golden age of full crystallization from 1976 to 1979. Then from 1979 to 1983 it undergoes a surge of growth, increasing in complexity and expanding its boundaries. After 1983 it fragments into subgenres… When metal fragmented into subgenres in 1983, the differences in lyrical themes were identifiable. For instance, lite/pop/hair metal introduced more common themes of love and lust, while underground thrash metal avoided sex and drugs (other than occasional anti-drug songs), and focused on forms of protest songs addressing politics, the environment and animal rights.

But enough history. Let’s talk cattle decapitation.

Cattle Decapitation vocalist Travis Ryan said his San Diego band’s mix of charging guitars and an animal rights message is drawing a diverse crowd that includes activists as well as traditional metal fans.

“We’ve always had a lot of crazy crossover going on,” he says before a recent show at Pound SF, a club in an industrial section of San Francisco. “It’s a pretty diverse crowd we have. I’ve never known what to make of it.”

Twenty artists recently displayed art inspired by the band’s last album Humanure, in an online exhibit. Proceeds from sales of the art will be donated to animal rights causes.

Metal bands are also branching out into literature and mythology.

Oddly enough, this is also nothing new. In fact, it’s been a staple of the genre since its inception.

Mastodon, which is headlining a summer tour with metal stalwart Slayer, patterned the concept album Leviathan around the story of Moby Dick. Death metal band Nile bases its songs and image around Egyptian mythology and iconography.

“Metal is expanding and evolving and becoming more diverse,” said Canadian anthropologist and filmmaker Sam Dunn, who directed Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey, released on DVD this summer. “It’s at a much more vibrant state than it was even five or 10 years ago.”

Dunn is working on a sequel to the film with the working title Global Metal which will trace the popularity of metal overseas, especially in developing countries like Brazil, Columbia and Indonesia.

“It’s becoming global and it’s becoming a tool for social and political commentary,” Dunn said. “It takes on a greater meaning in countries where people have had to struggle to survive. It takes on a much stronger political tone.”

Metal artists “have responded to the culture and politics of the day,” said Donna Gaines, a sociologist and author of Teenage Wasteland, a study of working class New Jersey metalheads.

Metal music in the 1980s was often homophobic and “very white,” she said, but current bands tend to be socially conscious and suspicious of political power. There’s also more women in the audience – and fronting the bands.

“This is another generation rising,” Gaines said.

Heavy metal has always touched on social and political issues. Metal grandfathers Black Sabbath criticized the Vietnam War in songs like “War Pigs” and “Children of the Grave.” Iron Maiden‘s “Run to the Hills” was an angry denunciation of the displacement of Native Americans.

But much of the criticism was blunted by dark imagery that panicked parents and led to the now ubiquitous “Parental Advisory” labels. Metal’s punk brethren were seen as having a more learned world view.

That began to change when hardcore punk and metal fused in the late 1980s with bands like Dirty Rotten Imbeciles and Nuclear Assault. But metal was still primarily known for the excessive lifestyles and racy videos of glam bands.

Punk and metal began to ‘crossover’ from at least the early 1980s; DRI and Nuclear Assault are just as often described as ‘speed’ or ‘thrash metal’ (not to be confused with grindcore, doom metal, stoner metal, sludge metal, alternative metal, nu metal, industrial metal, rap metal, neo-classical metal, progressive metal, goth metal, hardcore [punk] metal, symphonic black metal, or power metal…). Further, notwithstanding the fact that many of the early punk bands that survived to the mid-80s began to struggle with their sound — one that had devolved into bad metal with punk trappings, or “bad rock ‘n’ roll chivvied up a bit” — a much more important influence was Stoke-On-Trent’s finest Discharge. (Suicidal Tendencies also predate both DRI and Nuclear Assault.) In summary, it was obvious to anyone who cared to look that, by the mid-80s, the days of poodle rock’s domination over heavy metal would soon be over… ish.

The popular view of metalheads as mentally deficient goons was memorialized with the MTV cartoon Beavis and Butthead, about two teen metalheads who terrorize their pudgy neighbor Stewart, who wears a T-shirt of the glam rock band Winger.

More meaningful music was coming from the underground as popular culture embraced grunge and metal lost favor.

Napalm Death was a product of Britain’s “Crass” [sic] movement, which fused anarchism and punk in the late 1980s. Vocalist Mark “Barney” Greenway, a vegetarian and peace advocate, is often pulled aside by fans who want to know more about his progressive views.

Well, kinda… but not really.

1) Crass were a band, not a movement.
2) The movement they inspired was anarcho-punk, not grindcore.
3) They formed in 1977 and split in 1984.
4) Napalm Death’s association with Crass stems from their appearance on one of the Crass record label‘s compilations: Bullshit Detector, Volume 3 (1984). (“The Crucifixion of Possessions” doesn’t sound much like ‘metal’ either.)

One recent song, “The Code is Red, Long Live the Code,” takes aim at the spate of terror alerts in America with lyrics like: “Switched on to subdue when the masses switch off.”

“It’s really, really difficult sometimes to break through the cloud of apathy, so it’s great when someone comes and asks why you are coming from your perspective,” Greenway said during a recent tour stop in California.

“When you come into a country like America, when you challenge thinking, it’s a great affront to some people,” he said.

The lyrics on Lamb of God‘s two most recent albums have been expressly political, and the politics lean heavily to the left.

After President Bush was re-elected in 2004, frontman Randy Blythe says he joked to a friend: “Well, there still may be some good music made. What’s bad for civilization is good for punk rock and metal.”

Napalm Death’s Greenway is considering work as a political activist when his metal days are over, but he doesn’t think metal will ever completely stray from hedonistic and supernatural themes.

“I appreciate that not everything has to be awareness raising or political,” he said. “Music is also a form of entertainment and it should remain that way. Variety is the spice of life. Escapism is a good thing if it doesn’t cloud your vision.”

Finally, a know-nothing has written an article for — believe it or not — the IPA Review called ‘Liberalism, individualism and heavy metal’ (April 2006). In it, Dave Mustaine is quoted in defence of his property; Rock Against Bush is cited (as heavy metal!); the multi-millionaire Lars Ulrich is quoted (Some Kind of Monster is worth watching for the inspired animation of a greedy, grasping, whining Ulrich alone); and the article is rounded off with references to Rush, Twisted Sister, Stryper, Iron Maiden and Corporate Avenger.

Not exactly cutting-edge stuff.

Still, to the “small elite” what occasionally reads — but most often ignores — the Review, it probably sounds like the author knows what he’s talking about; the main point, in any case, being simply to confirm their ignorance, prejudice and stupidity.
