An anti-fascist organisation hell-bent on violence is targeting the British National Party’s summer festival.
The hardline group Antifa – who advocate the use of extreme violence against neo-Nazis – are calling on members to descend on the Red, White and Blue Festival next month.
The organisation has members all over Europe and were responsible for the decapitation of the waxwork Adolf Hitler in Berlin.
They are now targeting the BNP’s festival. Gerry Gable, of anti-fascist magazine Searchlight said: “Antifa like getting stuck in basically. They are related to groups in Germany and other parts of Europe. They will confront Nazis wherever they find them. They’re really quite intimidating and scary.”
Antifa is using left-wing message boards to rally support for direct action against the festival.
Police were so concerned about the prospect of violence at the festival they advised councillors to refuse the BNP a license to hold the two-day event in Denby, Derbyshire, from August 15.
They told a council meeting the BNP would need a 10ft fence, floodlights and up to 400 security staff to stave off [a] clash with the Antifa hardliners.
But despite warnings, the BNP has vowed to go ahead with the bash.
One chilling internet posting from Antifa read: “If you too are sick of the baffling success of these thick tw*ts, their lies and their hate, we urge you to join our mobilisation.
“We will be descending on their farm and wish to encourage as many people as possible to join us. We at Antifa intend to shut it down.”
Local intelligence sources indicate that, in addition to bloodthirsty Greek and Russian anti-fascists, English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh Nazi bashers will be joined by German and Swedish football hooligans. Further, the whole exercise is being co-ordinated by an elite unit of at least 40 New Zealand anarchists, fresh from training with animal loving Tuhoe for a peace freak terror-attack plan shock.

Damn. I’m still coming to terms with the 2nd Edition of AD&D (1989), and now I find out that there’s not only been a 3rd Edition (2000), a 3.5 Edition (2003), but a 4th Edition, released last month. Also: Cry Havoc — one of my favourite games of the early ’80s — is available to download (and play) online, and even has a dedicated site. Cry Havoc was published by Standard Games, which has long since disappeared. D&D was originally published by TSR, but was bought (1997) by Wizards of the Coast, which is owned by Hasbro (1999), one of the largest game companies in the world. And Gary Gygax, one of the key figures in the development of the modern RPG, is also now sadly dead.
Man Sentenced for Huge Theft From Ohio Vault

AKRON, Ohio — The man who masterminded what is believed to be one of the largest thefts in Ohio history was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison.
The man, Roger L. Dillon, 23, said he took more than $8 million last November from the vault of the armored car company where he worked because he felt helpless and frustrated by financial problems and a difficult upbringing.
Later in the day, Judge John R. Adams of Federal District Court sentenced Mr. Dillon’s mother, S. Lee Gregory, 49, to three years in prison. Ms. Gregory helped buy the getaway vehicle and fled with her son and his girlfriend to West Virginia, where they were caught five days later.
On Wednesday, Judge Adams had sentenced Mr. Dillon’s girlfriend, Nicole D. Boyd, 25, to five years in prison. All three defendants had pleaded guilty.
The Ohio case gained notoriety for the size of the theft when the money disappeared Nov. 26 from the vaults in the Liberty Township office of AT Systems, the armored car company where Mr. Dillon had worked for nine months.
None of those charged had a criminal background, and they had been struggling to get by in Rust Belt Youngstown. Mr. Dillon also apparently took his mother with him because he wanted to help her. After it was discovered that Mr. Dillon and Ms. Boyd’s Myspace pages noted their love for Dungeons & Dragons and vampire novels, they were dubbed the Goth Bonnie and Clyde.
As well as inspiring bank robbers, D&D also inspired the making of one of the most craptastic films of recent decades.

The No-state Solution
Even as the neo-liberal turn takes fierce hold on the Palestinian economy, the unending impasse in Palestine/Israel points up an ever more apparent fact: the nation-state is unworkable in its conventional capitalist sense. Palestine exemplifies the dead end of thinking that the state is any kind of a ‘solution.’ My reflections on the impasse in Palestine/Israel are in the spirit of Andrej Grubacic:
what is needed, not just in the Balkans, is an alternative to nationalism, colonialism and capitalism. [. . .] It should be a politics of a Balkan federation. A participatory society, built from the bottom up, through struggles for the creation of an inclusive democratic awareness, participatory social experiments, and an emancipatory practice that would win the political imagination of all people in the region.
The State Problem
Speaking of Israel, Anne Bayefsky has called on the Australian Government to join the Canadian, US and Israeli governments in boycotting a UN conference on racism, scheduled to take place in April 2009. Bayefsky writes: “The United Nations is planning a global anti-racism conference that is destined to encourage racism. Known as Durban II, and to take place in Geneva next April, it follows the notorious anti-semitic hatefest held in Durban seven years ago” (“Australia must boycott the next racist hatefest”, Anne Bayefsky, Sydney Morning Herald, July 22, 2008). According to Bayefesky, “There is no doubt that Durban II will use a UN platform to encourage racism, spread anti-Semitism and undermine democracy’s most precious freedoms. The question is whether democracies will deny it legitimacy – in pursuit of the actual protection of human rights.” Bayefesky further notes that:
The US and Israel walked out of Durban I. Australia stayed, making a bitter statement about the Durban declaration adopted by governments in the final moments: “We regret that far too much of our time has been consumed by bitter, divisive exchanges on issues which have done nothing to advance the cause of combating racism … The references to the Middle East contain language which will do nothing to achieve greater peace in that troubled region and nothing to advance the objectives of this conference.” However, the specific reservations Australia made to the declaration have been omitted by the UN ever since.
Bayefsky is a former academic, lawyer, and flack (aka‘Senior Fellow’) employed by the corporate think tank the Hudson Institute, “a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Your gift is tax deductible to the fullest extent provided by the law”, established in 1961. Numerous corporations — including Ciba-Geigy, DuPont, Exxon Mobil, General Electric, Heinz, IBM, McDonald’s, Microsoft, Monsanto, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Procter & Gamble and Westfield Corporation — have paid handsomely for Hudson’s allegedly “innovative research and analysis that promotes global security, prosperity, and freedom”: “The Hudson Institute received close to $25 million between 1987 and 2003 in foundation, corporate, and government grants, according to Media Transparency and the Capital Research Center”. On a totally awesome note:
One of Hudson’s founders, Kahn, was one of the more infamous products of the RAND Corporation, where, beginning in 1947, he developed nuclear strategies that downplayed the impact of a thermonuclear war and was supposedly the inspiration for the character of Dr. Strangelove. In a discussion of Kahn’s ideas in the New Yorker, Louis Menand quoted Kahn’s 1960 book, On Thermonuclear War: “Despite a widespread belief to the contrary, objective studies indicate that even though the amount of human tragedy would be greatly increased in the postwar [i.e. nuclear] world, the increase would not preclude normal and happy lives for the majority of survivors and their descendants.”
Boycotting international institutions is often ineffective and counterproductive, and countries such as Australia stand to lose much from disengaging. The recent call for Australia to boycott the second United Nations conference against racism in Geneva next year is no exception…
Ben and Andrea also reckon “diplomacy and the UN …remains our best, albeit flawed, “hope” for universal human rights promotion”; Anne, on the other hand, wants the UN abolished, and a United Democratic Nations established — no doubt comprising, at the very least, Canada, Israel, the United States and Australia (if it plays it’s cards right and withdraws from the upcoming anti-semitic hatefest).

Neo-Nazis in Germany are trying to intimidate left-wing politicians and activists by publishing their names, photos and addresses on Web sites, often accompanied by increasingly blatant threats. The police seem powerless to stop them.
Rainer Sauer, 51, a local politician from the western German town of Bocholt, had got used to the insults and death threats that neo-Nazis kept hurling at him via the Internet. Messages such as: “Hopefully someone will wipe out the fat scumbag.”

Web Sites Hard to Remove
Attempts to remove text and photos from the Internet are virtually hopeless. The Nuremberg site is on the server of Nazi memorabilia dealer Gary Lauck who lives in the United States, which puts him out of the reach of German justice authorities. This is a common practice among neo-Nazi sites. “Don’t you wonder why we have a .com address rather than .de?” says one site in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. [Lauck once reportedly stated “Adolf Hitler was the greatest man who ever lived, but he was too humane… We will not repeat that mistake!”]
So German authorities have to watch on powerless as far-right activists victimize their opponents from foreign-based Internet servers.
The makers of these Web sites get indirect help from the German authorities, because left-wing activists are commonly prosecuted for masking their faces during demonstrations, something they do precisely because they want to avoid having their faces photographed by neo-Nazis.
A 24-year old man from Erlangen in southern Germany was recently sentenced to pay a €1,800 fine for wrapping a scarf around his face at a demonstration, thereby breaking a law that bans demonstrators from concealing their faces.
Occasionally, the police even make use of the neo-Nazis’ efforts. During one court case against two 20-year-old left-wing activists from Nuremberg, a police officer admitted that he had used information published on the “Anti-Antifa” site in his investigation into the left-wing scene. The far-right was “well organized,” the policeman said in his own defence.
That statement was music to neo-Nazi ears. At last, they proclaimed on their Web site, “Anti-Antifa” and the state were fighting side by side against Germany’s enemies.
Blood & Honour: They get knocked down but…
After having been largely suppressed by antifa in the UK — where it was initially established by Ian Stuart and Nicky Crane in 1987 — Blood & Honour (aka Benson & Hedges) have gone on to bigger and better things elsewhere. Their first franchise was opened in Australia, and here it continues to eke out an existence on the fringes of the punk rock and skinhead milieu, with the help of a small band of supporters. In Germany, the organisation is outlawed; so too, in Spain. B&H has also run into legal difficulties in Belgium, Holland, and more recently the Czech Republic. According to one report, in May 2008 the B&H site was shutdown — briefly — by the FBI. A few days later it was back up. Another site, Redwatch Poland — which was established by the Polish franchise of another, initially UK-based group called C18 — has run into its fair share of troubles, including some deriving from the FBI. Curiously, the site — http://www.redwatch.info — appears to be down at the moment; what relationship this has to the current legal difficulties being experienced by Redwatch UK dingbats Simon Sheppard and Steve Whittle — recently convicted of racial vilification and subsequently having fled the UK for the USA — I don’t know. Of course, in Australia, attempts to establish Redwatch have been relatively unsuccessful; perhaps the closest existing equivalent is Jim Perren’s Whitelaw Towers blog.
Police in St. Petersburg arrested an anti-fascist activist after charging him with stabbing an off-duty police officer whom he mistook for a neo-Nazi, according to a July 18, 2008 report by the local Fontanka.ru news web site. According to police, the officer in training and his friend encountered a large group of young men on the night of June 13, one of whom allegedly asked if they were skinheads because of the way they were dressed. When the officer replied something to the effect that it was nobody’s business even if he were a skinhead, the suspect allegedly stabbed him and his friend with a knife, sending them both to the hospital. The suspect’s lawyer has a different version of the events, claiming that the police officer and his friend were walking down the street screaming neo-Nazi slogans when his client confronted them with his provocative question, at which point the officer allegedly broke a bottle and menaced him with it, forcing his client to use a knife in self-defense. Police arrested the suspect a month later and a court ordered that he remain in pre-trial detention.
A disgraced ex-British National Party councillor has hanged himself – just days before he was due in court over a savage attack on a pub landlord. Convicted football hooligan Luke Smith, 26, was arrested after punching the publican in the face when he was thrown out of his bar for being drunk. But as he awaited sentence former gas fitter Smith killed himself just opposite the scene of the crime in Lancashire… [Smith] was elected to Burnley Council in 2003 after racial tensions grew in the wake of riots in the town three years earlier. But Smith was suspended three months later after Nick Griffin, leader of the far right party, began investigating claims he glassed a reveller during their annual Red and White and Blue Festival…
Smith was jailed for 11 months for violent disorder in March 2006, and a further six months for similar incidents in Blackpool and Burnley, after he and a group of men attacked another group of men in a pub in Manchester, throwing items including chairs into the bar where women and children were sitting. According to antifa.org.uk, “Smith chose to take his life next to the Balti King takeaway in Yorkshire Street, Burnley, somewhere which is certain to become a favourite spot for local anti-fascists to hang out.”

Following the success of the Historicising Whiteness conference of 2006, Re-Orienting Whiteness continues the critical engagement with whiteness studies. In conjunction with the Australian Critical Race and Whiteness Studies Association, Re-Orienting Whiteness 2008 invites scholars to explore the potential, or otherwise, of ‘whiteness’ to analyse the operations of ‘race’, past and present.
Our central aim is to bring whiteness studies into a closer conversation with other approaches to ‘race’, particularly those which have emerged from studies of colonialism and postcolonial theory. There has been remarkably little cross fertilisation between these areas of scholarship, despite the many obvious synergies between them. We seek to foreground this tension as a fundamental challenge for the field. We envision the conference traversing a variety of countries, periods, methodologies and theoretical concepts, bringing together scholars of diverse backgrounds and interests. Broadening out from the (settler colonial) context of the United States, we wish to explore how whiteness operated in colonial and non-colonial contexts across the globe.
Possible themes include:

Going there to argue intellectually would only legitimise their argument and politicize what is essentially an … issue of self preservation. Events like this can only be dealt with [by] protests and brute force.” Similarly, ‘Kindred_Loyalist’ is of the opinion that “This is a Communist initiative. The war against the concept of race was largely initiated and sustained by Jews and Communists. Boas, Lewontin, and Gould were all Jewish anthropologists who made no secret of their hatred of “racism” and their belief that a scientist doesn’t have to approach his work objectively. Lewontin was also a Marxist. Many Jews working in academic areas outside anthropology have contributed to the destruction of race as a concept too. Professor and sociologist, Steven Seidman … stated “Whiteness is assumed…It is the default condition”. Noel Ignatiev is a Communist Jew and his site bears the heading “Abolish the White Race by any means possible”. Maurice Berger and Eric Foner, both Jews, are also active in “whiteness studies”. Kevin MacDonald‘s The Culture of Critique explains all this in much detail.” Paul Innes, the US-appointed moderator of SFDU, reckons that repeating the nutty performance of the Aryan Guard in Calgary, Canada last year would be a neat idea (although Paul admits he may not have the opportunity to grace the event with his own presence).

Of last year’s affair, which ended up being a relative success for the neo-Nazis, but a PR failure for the Social Club, one anonymous bonehead remarked:

On reflection, there’s probably some truth to this. That is, it’s quite likely that, even if the venue for the neo-Nazi gathering had been known in advance, the possibility of there being any direct confrontation between those in attendance and those who object to such gatherings was, and remains, very low, Skin Heads Neither For Nor Against Racial Prejudice being one of many groups content to sit on the fence regarding neo-Nazi infiltration into punk and skinhead subcultures. Nevertheless, the two neo-Nazi groups responsible for organising the gig — both local franchises of US-based groups — aren’t taking any chances, and the venue remains a closely-guarded secret until the day of the event. Fifteen Italian police officers and doctors sentenced to jail for brutally mistreating detainees after the 2001 G8 riots in Genoa were today celebrating their freedom after it became clear none of them would actually serve prison terms

At the time, the SWP blamed the violence on the anarchists (‘the black bloc’); a story which one of their local former franchises continues to circulate. In reacting to the latest trial verdicts, however, the SWP have dropped their attack on the black bloc, and instead bemoan the heavy-handedness of the Italian police, whose crimes they now describe as “terrible”. Apparently, no one is expected to remember their slurs from seven years ago — and who knows, the SWP may be right. In any case, speaking of fiction, that of Michael Moorcock features in the following article from the NYT:
…Since this is a science fiction column, perhaps the best way to understand Moorcock’s past is to peer farther into his future. In the late 1970s, with the Tories preparing to take power and George Lucas’s “Star Wars” saga in ascendancy, he published his pioneering essay “Starship Stormtroopers,” a brilliant, bench-clearing diatribe that ought to be required reading for any speculative-fiction fan who is ready to put down his 20-sided dice and become an adult.
In “Starship Stormtroopers,” Moorcock takes a one-man stand against what he perceives as widespread reactionary politics in genre fiction, railing against not only monolithic science fiction writers like Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and A. E. van Vogt (“wild-eyed paternalists to a man,” he declares them), but also C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien — titans of fantasy who seemed to be obvious influences on him.
Wielding his pen like Stormbringer, Moorcock writes, “If I were sitting in a Tube train and all the people opposite me were reading ‘Mein Kampf’ with obvious enjoyment and approval it probably wouldn’t disturb me much more than if they were reading Heinlein, Tolkien or Richard Adams.” And then he takes off the kid gloves.
What the “utopian fiction” of such authors teaches its readers, Moorcock argues, is blind obedience to a romantic hero whose motives may be just as ambiguous or pernicious as those of his enemies. “Heroes betray us,” he writes. “By having them, in real life, we betray ourselves.” Left unchecked and unexamined, our desire to believe in these infallible father figures yields Ronald Reagan, George Wallace and Joe McCarthy. And, Moorcock says, “At its most spectacular it gives us Charlie Manson and Scientology.”
Moorcock writes that the only true alternative to such figures is the anarchist: “a mature, realistic adult imposing laws upon the self and modifying them according to an experience of life, an interpretation of the world.”
Whether or not one fully buys into this line of thinking, it’s not hard to see how Elric was, for Moorcock, a formative attempt at a character who would transcend the problems the author saw in genre fiction and exist within this new framework — a hero who rarely won the treasure or the girl, and sometimes encouraged the girl to leap into a yawning chasm to her doom.
