Amsterdam’s new squatters : And the rise of the anti-squat entrepreneur

Short of cash and need a place to live?

In the Netherlands, you can get around it by squatting. There, occupying someone else’s space — as long as it has been left vacant for 12 months [until recently, this was actually one month] — is considered a right. That’s how Bart and his friends came to reside at 91 eerste Oosterparkstraat, a rundown townhouse in central Amsterdam…

In Australia too, homelessness in someone else’s world can be ‘got around’ by squatting, though the laws which relate to squatting are far harsher than Holland (or England for that matter). In Australia, there is no ‘right’ to housing, and squatting — while not in and of itself a crime — is rendered a criminal activity under more general property laws, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love, cherish, and to obey, till death us do part, according to God’s holy ordinance.

Or not.

Melbourne has a long history of squatting, both residential and social, and Barricade has an archive of materials relating to this history, which covers the period from the late ’70s through to the early- to mid- ’90s, and which will one day soon — hopefully — be uploaded… stay tuned!

Word on the street is that Victoria Police have recently organised an anti-kraak squad. This is presumably in response to a number of recent (social) squatting activities, a housing market — especially in the inner city — which excludes the poor — especially students — and an expectation that, as wages decrease, and rentals sky-rocket, more and more people will choose to forgo enriching real estate agents and their clients, and instead squat empty housing (of which there is approximately 750,000 units Down Under). Then again… perhaps this is merely the remnants of the “Inner City Squats Committee” of 2004?

“We’re not Nazis, we’re punk-anarchists”!

[Update : April 2, 2007: Gabriel Kolko, commenting on the state of the State of Israel (‘Israel’s Last Chance’, Counterpunch, March 30, 2007) writes “Some indications of these trends [ie, “profound divisions” in Israeli society] range from the banal to the tragic. In Petah Tikva the abandoned Hashomer Hatzair office has been given to about 150 punks, “anarchists,” who originate in what was the USSR; there is also a club of punks [sic] that calls itself Nazi — “boneheads” in skinhead parlance — and paints swastikas on synagogues. Both dislike the ultra-Orthodox and like the same music.” Well, kinda. ‘Boneheads’ are racist ‘skinheads’; the political status of the punks who congregate at the club is unknown to me; both the ‘anarchist punks’ and the boneheads probably “dislike” the Ultra-Orthodox, albeit for somewhat different reasons; it’s highly unlikely that the punks and the boneheads listen to the same music — at least in the sense that, while boneheads are often happy to listen to bands which despise them (cf. David Innes), few if any punks worthy of the name enjoy listening to White Power muzak.]

Neo-Nazis? In Israel?!? Well, maybe not… In an attempt to account for a number of anti-Semitic incidents in Israel over the last few years, suspicion has centred on Russian immigrants, especially yoof. And it appears that, as in Russia, some at least — flailing around for an oppositional form of identity, and living in a society characterised, like many others, by religious conflict and ethnic discrimination, often hostile or indifferent to their presence — have collapsed into fascism. And despite a long and bloody history of struggle by anarchists against fascism — from Italy, to Spain, to Germany, to contemporary Russia — and a shorter (since the 70s) and less bloody struggle by skinheads against neo-Nazi infiltration of their sub-culture, some still just don’t get it. In Melbourne, this includes the supporters of neo-Nazi venue The Birmingham Hotel, which will host a “punk” fashion show this Friday, starring The Blurters, Charter 77, PBG and Slick 46.

They’re not working class punks; they’re scabs.

“…Don’t listen to all the shit about splits and politics, the Boneheads go on about it because they know how we drove them underground and reclaimed Skinhead culture for true Skinheads. The non-politicals go on [and on and on] about it because it’s easier than taking on the scum. I’ve been a Skinhead since 1969 and I know what it’s meant since day one.” — Roddy Moreno, The Oppressed

We’re not Nazis, we’re punk-anarchists
Moti Katz
Ha’aretz
February 28, 2007

The teenagers in Petah Tikva’s Gan Yehonatan club stress that they are not Nazis.

“We’re punks!” they say.

“People think all new immigrants are anti-Semites. That’s not true at all,” one of the teenagers says, referring to anti-Semitic incidents in town, like last year’s desecration of a large synagogue.

“We don’t like the ultra-Orthodox but we wouldn’t paint swastikas on synagogues either,” he says.

Some 150 young immigrants from the former Soviet Union frequent the Gan Yehonatan club in the afternoons. The purpose of the club is to keep the youths from drinking and hanging out in parks.

The boys admit uncomfortably that they are familiar with the Nazi-Russian youth in Petah Tikva.

“There are groups of neo-Nazis – not here at the club, though. They exist in every town in the country,” says one youth.

Some of the youths regard Israelis with anger and distrust. They are a close-knit group, but complain that Israelis treat them with contempt and see them as stereotypes. Most of all, they say they don’t belong. The reports of vandalism and attacks on ultra-Orthodox residents have intensified this feeling.

When asked what they know of Nazi and anti-Semitic groups, they act embarrassed. Gradually, however, they open up and talk about the “Nazi skinheads” and terror they impose on other groups.

‘Good’ and ‘bad’ skinheads [Skinheads vs. Boneheads]

“You must distinguish between two groups of skinheads,” one says. “There are good skinheads and Nazi skinheads, called boneheads.” (Nazi skinheads are often called boneheads by traditionalist skinheads and Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice.)

“The boneheads shave their heads and wear white suspenders with jeans or military trousers, sometimes with a white collar,” one boy says. Most of them are over 18 years old, some even serve in the military, and they advocate typical Nazi ideology, based on hatred of Jews and Israelis, he says.

“A few months ago, the boneheads held a ceremony to mark Hitler’s birthday in one of the cemeteries,” a boy says.

[A few years ago (2002), Melbourne boneheads held a celebration to mark Hitler’s birthday in a Melbourne pub… Can you guess which one? Earlier, in 1990, the bonehead Dane Sweetman celebrated the occasion by murdering fellow bonehead David Noble.]

Irena, 18, from the central region, has spent some time with the Nazi boneheads.

“I was a skingirl – that’s what you call the Nazi skinheads’ girls,” she says.

Irena’s boyfriend was the group leader, dubbed the “Fuhrer.”

“We were a bunch of immigrant Russian boys and girls, and we had a certain dress code. The boys usually shaved their heads and wore military pants.

“On weekends we’d meet in parks, where we’d drink and smoke and listen to Nazi music. Nazi music isn’t Rammstein [a German band that incorporates elements of metal/hard rock, industrial metal and electronic music],” she says with a smile. Some evenings fights would break out between her group and others who met in the parks. Irena’s boyfriend, the Fuhrer, was involved in fighting among the groups.

[Irena the ex-bonehead also features in a previous article by Katz: ‘Israelis run anti-Jewish Web sites’, Ha’aretz, February 25, 2007.]

…There are many shaven heads among the good skinheads [duh!], who wear jeans, sometimes bleach-stained, red suspenders and red laces on their military boots. One boy says that he was beaten up once by the Nazi skinheads for wearing red suspenders. “The red symbolizes Communism to them, and the Communists defeated the Nazis,” he says.

[Er… on the other hand: Red & Anarchist Skinheads // Germany. On fashion: Fire and Flames Riotwear!]

Most of the youths in Gan Yehonatan categorize themselves as punk-anarchists. “We, the punks, usually wear tight black trousers and various Mohawk hair styles,” he says. “We also have metalists, who listen to heavy metal music, wear lots of earrings and rivets, army boots and are into piercing.”

Some of them are convinced that the boneheads desecrated the big synagogue and tried to frame the punks.

After school, in the afternoons, the Gan Yehonatan group walks along the gravel path leading to the club in Petah Tikva. Several girls, some dressed in black, greet each other politely. Boys with thuggish expressions chain smoke and converse among themselves in Russian, dotted with Hebrew phrases.

The club provides the teenagers with activities to help them deal with their difficulties in creative ways. At least seven punk and rock bands have come out of the club, as well as a breakdance group. The club also has a music room, a carpentry workshop and a basketball court.

After the lights go out

Gan Yehonatan opened about three years ago, after a municipal committee headed by Nurit Tibi, director of the Beit Hila educational center, discovered that drinking and violence were prevalent among immigrant CSI youth. The committee decided to open a club in an old rundown building belonging to the Hashomer Hatzair youth movement, opposite the town’s Yad Lebanim park.

…Statistics from the Ministry of Absorption show that more than 37,500 immigrants from former Soviet countries moved to Petah Tikva between January of 1989, just before the collapse of the Soviet Union, and December of 2005 — slightly more than 20 per cent of the city’s current population.

While many of those immigrants settled and thrived, others have had trouble adapting to the culture and learning Hebrew, leaving former professionals unemployed or taking menial jobs to get by, and their children uprooted and confused.

Some of those have ended up at Petah Tikva’s Youth Consultation Centre, an outreach and treatment centre, where criminologist Nurit Tibi says she treats several young Russian-speaking youth who’ve been in trouble with the law for assaulting ultra-Orthodox Jews or throwing stones at synagogues.

“I see what happened in the Great Synagogue as something very extreme and very difficult. But I also see it as part of a wider problem of identity crisis,” she said.

While many of these immigrants qualified to move to Israel because of a Jewish grandparent, after a lifetime in an environment where religion was actively discouraged, they are today either secular Jews or do not consider themselves Jewish at all — leaving the next generation struggling to figure out where they belong in a Jewish state.

With anti-Semitism gaining ground in Russia, Russian-speaking teens here may find the acceptance they seek by imitating what they see on Russian-language websites and videos.

“They copy it from somewhere. And here they don’t belong to anybody,” Ms. Tibi said.

One of her clients — a young man from a broken home, who does not qualify for citizenship because his parents are not themselves Jewish — served eight months in prison for assaulting religious Jews. “But when you meet him, you find a confused adolescent who hasn’t found where he belongs. What is he? Is he a Jew? Is he Christian? Is he Israeli? What is he?

“These symbols are the country, for them. This is the way to fight the government — that’s how they see the State of Israel.”

From Russia With Hate, Carolynne Wheeler, The Globe and Mail, May 17, 2006

It wasn’t easy to reach the CSI youth, says youth activity coordinator Bella Alexandrov. But gradually they started coming and infused life into the place.

In the late evening hours, the lights go out at Gan Yehonatan. Only two girls remain with Alexandrov to confide their problems. The rest of the group, equipped with cigarettes and booze, drift off into the dark corners of the park.

Alexandrov looks at them sadly as they disappear. She hopes this evening will end without any violent incidents, and that tomorrow they will come back “home.”

“Because this is the only place that could possibly constitute a home for them,” she says.

Bombs, Knives & Batons, Not Food, in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Russia :

Activists Prevented From Giving Away Food
Evgenia Ivanova
The St. Petersburg Times
Fenruary 27, 2007

Volunteers giving food to homeless people and street children in central St. Petersburg were stopped by police on Sunday, Fontanka.ru reported.

Members of the “Food, Not Bombs” group were giving out food outside Vladimirskaya Metro Station when the police intervened.

“All the activists who were at the square at the time — around 15 people — were detained by plain-clothes policemen,” a purported witness claimed on Indymedia Piter, an activist web site on Sunday.

No independent confirmation of this account was available Monday.

“Without being given a reason for the detention, with [the police] merely presenting their IDs, [the participants] were pushed into [police] vehicles and taken to the station,” the Indymedia account continues.

A participant of the event contacted by The St. Petersburg Times, who declined to be named, agreed with the details of the account published on the Indymedia Piter website.

However, the police are reported to have said that the activists were not formally detained but taken in for a “talking to.”

“Law enforcement representatives maintain it was not a detention, but a preventative undertaking,” Fontanka.ru reported on Sunday. “The participants [in the ‘Food Not Bombs’ event] were invited to the station for a chat.”

All those involved were released the same day.

In early February a bomb exploded under a flower stall outside Vladimirskaya Metro Station on the same day that a [FNB] event was scheduled to take place there. The explosion left the stall’s salesperson with minor injuries.

In January, 21-year-old Ivan Yelin was seriously injured in a knife attack on the way home from participating in a [FNB] event.

In November 2005, anti-fascist campaigner Timur Kacharava was stabbed to death by unknown [boneheads] outside a bookstore on Ligovsky Prospekt after being followed from a [FNB] event.

Moffat: “Some of my best friends are Muslim lifesavers!”

Leaflet attack on Muslim lifesavers
Mark Metherell
Sydney Morning Herald
February 24, 2007

THE far right candidate John Moffat has denied he put out a leaflet demanding the removal of Muslim lifesavers from North Cronulla and accusing “Islamic supremacists” of incest.

But Mr Moffat said many Cronulla people would incline towards the views expressed in the leaflet bearing his name.

Mr Moffat, Australia First‘s only candidate in the state election, is standing for Cronulla and called for an end to the multicultural “nightmare” he said was afflicting the area…

The pamphlet delivered to letterboxes in Cronulla yesterday [by members and supporters of Australia First, organised by Darrin Hodges] called for the axing of a campaign to encourage the integration of Muslim surf lifesavers at Cronulla, a project it describes as a “monstrosity”.

Mr Moffat said that while he did not put out the pamphlet, it was “ludicrous” that the Federal Government was paying $600,000 for the “On the Same Wave” Muslim lifesaving initiative.

“I am not against Muslim lifesavers. But true Australian lifesavers do it for free.”

On the claim in the pamphlet that many “Lebanese thugs” in the 2005 Cronulla riots were “the product of incest” and that these bloodlines had led to “an underclass of Islamic supremacists”, Mr Moffat said “that is a popular sentiment”, but he did not know enough about the issue…

…to provide evidentiary support for his absurd contentions: which, together with his pointless denials of political responsibility for the leaflet in question, puts Moffat well on his way to becoming a professional politician (rather than an amateur neo-Nazi).

In related news, John Laidlaw, 24, a member of the British National Party — one of the two contemporary political parties Australia First models itself upon (the other being the German NPD) — has been sentenced (February 23) to life imprisonment on three counts of attempted murder. Laidlaw had previously threatened to “kill all black people”, and “Following the conviction it emerged Laidlaw was found guilty of a racially-aggravated assault on a driver in 2004 and given a community punishment just days before the London shootings”.

Above : David ‘Action’ Jackson, 62, dentist, amateur chemist, and Aryan Superman.

On the same day, February 23, the jury in the trial of two other racist meatheads — David Jackson and Robert Cottage — accused of plotting to make a bomb with intent to endanger life, has failed to reach a verdict.

In the Czech Republic, anarchists clashed with fascists outside a proposed US military base in the Brdy military district, 45 miles southwest of Prague. Noted Czech conformist (and former Czech President) Vaclav Havel reckons the base is a good thing; thousands of other Czechs disagree. (In January, anarchists forced Czech police to end another fascist demonstration in Moravia.)

On Saturday [February 24], police detained nine protestors at a demonstration in Beroun again the proposed US radar base. Four of those were later charged, two with attacking a public official and two with disturbing the peace.

Right-wing extremists and anarchists clashed at the demonstration. Police did not say whether those charged came from among the right-wing or anarchist group.

The demonstration against the radar base was staged by the Autonomous Nationalists Central Bohemia right-wing group. Police say about 100 people took part in the demonstration.

They were opposed by about 130 anarchists who attempted to prevent them from entering the square and threw stones at them. Ondřej Slačálek, a spokesman for the anarchists, told CTK that they sought to prevent the nationalists from marching through the town.

“The pretext of their rally, a demonstration against the construction of a radar station, is tantamount to abuse of a good idea by a movement that tramples on the rights of minorities,” Slačálek said.

The US wants to build the radar system in the Brdy military grounds, 70 kilometres southwest of Prague, as part of the plan to protect the United States and its allies against possible missile attacks by Iran and North Korea.

Dick, you’re a wanker. Piss off.

In the past few days, Australian / US Vice-President Dick Cheney came, saw, and conquered Australia. Or, at least, avoided being assassinated in order to receive the fawning compliments of local satraps during the course of his brief visit (February 22–25) Down Under. Central Sydney was placed on lockdown in order to accomodate the war criminal‘s visit, and state legislation amended so as to allow his bodyguards to carry weapons. As for the financial loss imposed on taxpayers, authorities are understandably reluctant to publicly disclose its full extent. However, in an EXCLUSIVE! for The Daily Terror, Joe Hildebrand (February 23) reveals that “MORE than 1200 police are being pulled off the streets to protect visiting US Vice-President Dick Cheney, causing shortages at almost every Sydney police station and costing taxpayers up to $2 million”.

Above : With pride, integrity and plenty of guts, NSW Police ensure Dick’s visit is a pleasant one.

Unfortunately, Dick rudely spurned the Sydney Welcoming Committee, and NSW Police announced (February 23) that eight people were arrested during the course of police attempts to stop public protest regarding the war criminal’s unwanted presence in Sydney. “Timmeh!” Blair and Joe Hildebrand even complained about a handful of protesters dressed as cops… Tranny Cops! (SEE! Tranny Cops @ G20.) And in the same level-headed article, ‘Federal Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd yesterday branded some of the protesters as “ferals”. “Among the protesters we see a bunch of violent ferals and they should expect absolutely no sympathy,” Mr Rudd said’. But Kev the Head has oodles of sympathy for multi-millionaire Dick, apparently, who made just one, 23-minute long public address during his flying visit, to the Australian-American Leadership Dialogue at the Shangri-La Hotel.

Choice quote by Dick:

…And it is they, the terrorists, who have ambitions of empire. Their goal in the broader Middle East is to seize control of a country, so they have a base from which they can launch attacks against governments that refuse to meet their demands. Their ultimate aim — and one they boldly proclaim — is to establish a caliphate covering a region from Spain, across North Africa, through the Middle East and South Asia, all the way to Indonesia. And it wouldn’t stop there

Anarchy, Memory & ‘Forgetting’: Salvador Puig Antich

“Official history is the bourgeoisie’s history, and its mission today is to wreath nationalism, liberal democracy and the market economy in myth, so as to have us believe that these are eternal, immutable and immovable.”

The Age has published a review (‘Anarchist versus a forgotten foe’, February 23, 2007) by Stephanie Bunbury of the recent biopic on the murdered Spanish anarchist Salvador Puig Antich (1948–1974). In a similar manner to which the release of previous films on the subject of Spanish fascism have been greeted, Salvador has inspired a number of scribblers to offer their own reflections on Spanish history and politics. Typically, the story goes something like this:

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there was an awful Civil War, fought between the followers of a Spanish General called Franco, on the one hand, and the supporters of a Republican Government, on the other. Franco won, and ruled Spain for many years. Then Franco died, and Spain emerged into the modern world. Since then — according to Bunbury anyway — “By general consensus, Spain has concentrated on looking forward. Clearly, this has paid off. In the three decades since the dictator General Franco died, Spain has been transformed from a poor backwater into a sophisticated match for any of its European neighbours, the smart Spain of Almodovar movies, Zara clothes and 24-hour clubbing.” Apparently, smart film, smart clothing, and endless clubbing are considered to be the hallmarks of a modern, free society; and their existence evidence of a successful transition by Spanish society as a whole from dictatorship to ‘democracy’.

The transition to democracy and the first Spanish astronaut

Aside from being palatable nonsense, such an account continues to obscure the much starker realities of twentieth-century Spanish history, including the period following Franco’s long-overdue death, and, of course, the history of the Iberian anarchist movement’s resistance during his lifetime, both underground, and in exile (including the town in which Bunbury’s paper is published).

Also unmentioned in Bunbury’s account is the assassination of Franco’s annointed successor, Luis Carrero Blanco, considered by many to be the point at which Spanish and international authorities concluded that forty years of dictatorship was enough. Operación Ogro (Operation Ogre) was a plot hatched by members of the Basque separatist group ETA. The BBC reported (December 20, 1973):

The Spanish Prime Minister, Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco, has been killed in a car bomb attack in Madrid. The 70-year-old, his bodyguard and a driver died instantly and four other people were injured after a remote-controlled bomb was detonated as he passed. A massive explosion sent the car hurtling into the air and over the roof of the San Francisco de Borga Church where Mr Blanco had just been attending mass…

A fitting end, perhaps, but merely one indication of the long-standing and, in the late 60s and early 70s, increasing resistance to the Francoist regime in Spain. Such acts also provide some of the political context to Antich’s life and death, and a glimpse into the more general context of violent resistance to dictatorship in Spain.

On the response to his execution, Bunbury writes that: “…There was widespread rioting at the news of [Antich’s] death, and thousands of people who would never have dreamt of throwing a petrol bomb attended funeral services. The tide had turned…” Yeah. Right. A tale of innocent workers — who, bereft of imagination, never dream of resisting their oppressors — suddenly shocked into taking to the streets by news of Salvador’s death. As others have written:

This is not the tale of Salvador Puig Antich

We are served up a slick, commercial soap opera — a real tear-jerker of a movie. A laughable fictional melodrama, run-of-the-mill stuff. A slick action movie that blinds us to the real history of Salvador and so many others, and above all to the whys and wherefores and targets of their struggles. We are shielded from the circumstances, political activity and purposes behind the expropriations and the political and revolutionary awakening that stretches over a lengthy career of struggle. How was the MIL [Moviemiento Iberico de Liberacion / Iberian Liberation Movement] born and for what purpose? Its connections with the workers’ movement’s most radical struggles[?]. There is no reference to those struggles, not even to the final one, in the wake of the execution, when the biggest factories in Barcelona and district shut down and thousands of workers demonstrated, with hundreds arrested on the Ramblas. We are shown Salvador as some sort of a playboy and his comrades as a gang of ne’er-do-wells with political overtones…

In response to Salvador’s execution, the FAI and the Local Federation of Anarchist Groups (Barcelona) produced and distributed a text, which “hints at a history of Anarchist militancy in the ’60s still to be heard”:

In the 1970s, the repression against Iberian anarchism has reached figures that bear comparison with those of the 1940s. Thus, dozens of comrades have been rounded up at demonstrations and in clashes with police: we have the arrests and harassment visited upon Terra Libre (Valencia); on three occasions upon… Autogestión Obrera (Madrid), after Andrés Ruiz (Barcelona) and Navarro (L’Hospitalet del Llobregat); David Urbano again (Barcelona); …ex-members of MIL; some thirty youths from Zaragoza (the pursuit of the Acción Directa groups); and in recent weeks, the wave of tough repression unleashed against various libertarian organisations in Catalonia even among individualists and sympathisers of a thousand different outlooks…

At the end of Bunbury’s article, the director, Manuel Huerga, is quoted as stating that:

“Things have not changed too much from that time… We are very happy with our democracy — and not just in Spain; that we live in a world with democracies, that we have many types of freedom from authority… Probably we live in an artificial, silly happiness. But, at the same time, there are people like Bush and Berlusconi who make this world very dangerous. And those guys, the people at that time I think were very courageous to fight against the regime. At that time, the enemy was very clear. Now it is not so clear; the enemy is around us. And I don’t find too many people fighting now.”

Then Huerga is simply not looking. And neither is The Age. Josh Wolf, an anarchist and a journalist, has recently earnt the distinction of being the person longest held in a US prison for their refusal to submit evidence to a grand jury. His story has been widely-reported in the US and international media, and he has been recognised by a range of different journalistic associations, but the Australian media, including The Age, have completely ignored his case.

Ya basta.

Salvador screens on Saturday, March 3, at the inaugural La Mirada, Jewels of Spanish Cinema festival, which runs from March 1-11 at ACMI.

Josh Wolf and ‘The vanishing art of standing firm’

MEDIA : The vanishing art of standing firm
Edward Wasserman
Miami Herald
February 19, 2007

Josh Wolf is an activist and freelance journalist who videotaped a small anti-globalism [sic] demonstration in San Francisco on July 8, 2005. The action protested the G8 summit in Scotland, where representatives of the richest countries were talking economic policy. The protest was led by activists who believe that globalization demolishes protections for the world’s most vulnerable and deepens the gap between rich and poor.

That particular evening, the protest got rambunctious, several demonstrators were arrested, a city policeman was smashed in the head and a firework was set off underneath a squad car.

Wolf edited his video and posted it on his website. Most of it is well-paced but boilerplate footage of demonstration clamor, though it includes a dramatic sequence of a cop subduing one protestor with a chokehold. Portions of Wolf’s video showed up on local TV news, for which he was paid.

Then the real fun started, and Wolf is now in federal prison for refusing to talk to a grand jury that’s demanding he turn over his raw tape and testify about demonstrators he interviewed.

It isn’t clear what’s driving the Wolf affair and why a minor fracas involving city cops and a handful of anarchists is in federal court anyway. One plausible theory is that because California — like most other states — has a shield law that enables journalists to withstand legal pressure to identify confidential sources, authorities wanted the case moved to federal court where journalists have no statutory protection…

“Working class punk” : Strike a pose / There’s nothing to it

‘Victim of white supremacist abuse returns to join protest chorus’
Marika Dobbin
Melbourne Times
October 18, 2006

A LOCAL woman who was intimidated and racially abused by a group of men last month will attend a protest against neo-Nazism outside a Fitzroy pub

Blondien (not her real name) says she was walking alone to her car on Johnston Street the same night [as the Blood & Honour ISD Memorial Gig, September 23, 2006] when she was surrounded by about seven men. She says the men screamed abuse at her, calling her a black c..t and forcing her to repeat the insults.

“It’s disgusting that people would single out one person and you have to say stuff about your race to get out of it,” Blondien said…

Hotel co-owner Gary (who wouldn’t give his surname) said: “I’m not getting involved in someone else’s bullshit.”

Speaking of bullshit, on Friday March 2nd, The Blurters, Charter 77, PBG and Slick 46 are having a gig at The Birmingham; effectively scabbing on a boycott of the pub that was called for following its hosting of a neo-Nazi gig last year, and which resulted in the abuse outlined above. In doing so, the bands are joining the likes of The Assailants, Bulldog Spirit, Distorted Truth, Marching Orders (see below), Standard Union (Adelaide) and The Worst, all of whom have played gigs at The Birmy in the intervening period.

In practice then, and all posing aside, for some, being a ‘working class punk’ means acting like a racist Tory, and joining others — in this case boneheads — in shitting on other workers. In comparison to the violent antics of B&H in other countries, however, ‘Blondien’ may be considered somewhat fortunate. In Belgium last May, for example, a member of the Belgian branch of B&H shot two people to death in cold blood: a white baby and her black nanny. Members of his organisation were also busted by Belgian police ‘…in a Belgian neo-Nazi terror plot’ (AFP/Reuters, International Herald Tribune, September 8, 2006).

The continued support for The Birmy by some local punks is warmly received by local boneheads:

“Must be really pissing you off knowing what ever you do & say, you can’t harm The Birmy.” — Matt (The Anonymous Twat), November 13, 2006

“It’s amazing how these cowardly dirtbags can even stand up without a spine. Gutless fags. The gig was brilliant: great bands, great people and a good time was had by all. UP YOURS FAG ANTI-RACIST VERMIN! GOD FORGIVES, HAMMERS DON’T!” — Hammerskin38 (Southern Cross Hammerskins)

But on the other hand, most are both a little more intelligent — and a little more respectful — of their roots and traditions:

“To be a Skinhead, you must love your Doc Martens. You must love ska music. You must have the right attitude, the right attitude from the heart and the brain. You must like football. You must like to dance harder than anybody else, of any subculture. And most of all, you need to be anti-racist.” — Buster Bloodvessel

Introducing The Chunder From Downunder

    http://loudcity . com/station/697/listen.aspx

Rock Against Communism (RAC) is another term for White Power muzak. It derived its name from the English organisation — a/k/a the White Noise Club — which preceeded the establishment in 1987 of Blood & Honour by Ian Stuart Donaldson (1957–1993). On Stormfront Radio Down Under — proudly hosted by LoudCity — RAC is a segment with David Innes (‘Baron Von Hund’), ‘Aussie Knight’, Innes’ partner — and SFDU moderator — Lilith Peterson, and Paul Innes (David’s brother, a/k/a ‘Steelcap Boot’) .

NB. The Chunder from Down Under explicitly violates LoudCity’s TOS:

    5. Content Guideline: User agrees not to post, upload or transmit to the servers of LoudCity or to any third party server used for User’s webcasting any sound recordings, communications, text, graphics or other information (collectively, “Material”) that:

    * is fraudulent, relates to hate-groups or other racist activities…

But, as is not unusual with TOS (see DreamHost and Redwatch), ISP’s tend to ignore them unless subject to popular pressure, and by gaining an awareness of the business (and legal) implications of providing a platform for racists and fascists to promulgate their filth.

LoudCity may be contacted here and via their email: sales[at]loudcity[dot]net.

The Chunder from Down Under not only features music from Battlecry, Blood Red Eagle, Bound for Glory, Fortress, Max Resist, No Remorse, Saga, Skrewdriver “and many more!”, it also features the musings of a bonehead from Blood & Honour Australia called Aussie Knight, who helps explain attempts by he and other neo-Nazis to destroy skinhead culture. The soundtrack to such attempts to drag the name of Skinhead through the mud is provided by bands such as (the English neo-Nazi band) No Remorse, which has songs with titles such as ‘Zigger! Zigger! Shoot those Fucking Niggers’, ‘Belsen was a Gas, Exterminate Ya!’ and ‘Zyklon B’ (from the album Barbecue in Rostock). Australian bands follow the trend. For example:

Reject an alien government, don’t recognise their laws
It’s time to close the floodgates, it’s time to shut the door
Repatriate, ship ’em out, send the bastards back
If they don’t fucking like it, it’ll be in body bags

    Get out!

    — Fortress, ‘Parasites’

Doug Smith (above right), vocalist with Bulldog Spirit, also now plays guitar in Marching Orders. Bulldog Spirit’s drummer, Joel, is a well-known local Melbourne ‘skinhead’ (who also allegedly moonlights as the drummer for Bail Up! — one of the bands that played last year’s ISD Memorial at The Birmy).

The last word goes to Roddy:

SHARP [Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice], and more importantly the SHARP attitude, has had a massive influence on Skinhead culture. Remember how it used to be back in the eighties when the Boneheads nearly strangled the cult. Remember how kids thought to be a Skinhead you had to be a Nazi. If it wasn’t for SHARP and other groups like AFA, ARA, RASH and all the rest we would be swimming in a sea of swastikas by now. Don’t listen to all the shit about splits and politics, the Boneheads go on about it because they know how we drove them underground and reclaimed Skinhead culture for true Skinheads. The non-politicals go on about it because it’s easier than taking on the scum. I’ve been a Skinhead since 1969 and I know what it’s meant since day one.” — Roddy Moreno, The Oppressed

Real SkinheadStage Bottles

Oi! You stupid bastards just wake up
And think about
Where your culture comes from
Oi! It’s not just having fights
Dancing and drinking
Dressing up and owning many records

Oi! It’s fighting back
So you should feel
Like a suburban rebel
Oi! Social difference is the reason
Employees are still exploited

Real Skinhead

Oi! Fred Perry was a Jew and Levi, too
Black music
The movement source
Oi! Is kicking out the stupid racists
So let the kids be united
Oi! Don’t influence the younger ones
By telling much
Without saying anything
Oi! Skinhead’s not a stupid culture
Your’re not allowed
To switch your brain off

Real Skinhead

Oi! You’re singing songs about a teenage warning
About not showing the white flag
Oi! Don’t talk about a way of life
Though for you
There’s no deeper meaning
Oi! Is feeling pride
But just posing
Is no reason to be proud
Oi! So skinhead is a different thing
Your infiltration will be stopped

Real Skinhead
Oi!

Free Free! Free Josh!

According to Friends of Jeffrey Free Luers, on February 14 the Oregon Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that Jeff’s case will be reversed and remanded back to the Lane County Circuit Court for resentencing as a result of Judge Velure’s errors in imposing the original draconian sentence. The opinion just came out this morning… but it looks like Jeff could potentially get about 15 years taken off his 266[!] month sentence… Congratulations to Jeff and his family!

Background:

Jeff was sentenced in 2001 to 22 years and 8 months in prison for the arson of the Romania car dealership in Eugene, [Oregon, USA,] and an attempted arson of Tyree Oil. The total damage amounted to burned tires on 3 SUVs: the tires were replaced and the SUVs were resold… Outrage over the unjust sentence spanned the globe [even extending to Melbourne!]. Jeff is currently imprisoned at the Oregon State Prison and the Civil Liberties Defense Center has continuously assisted Jeff with various legal matters during his incarceration.

For additional background on Jeffrey Free Luers, click here. The entire opinion may be read here.

In other news, while the Australian media remains happily trapped inside The Cone of Silence regarding his case, according to Bob Egelko, “A federal judge assigned a magistrate as a mediator Tuesday to try to resolve the case of Josh Wolf, the blogger who has been in prison nearly six months for refusing to turn over a videotape of an anarchist protest to a federal grand jury” (Magistrate will mediate case of jailed blogger, San Francisco Chronicle, February 14, 2007).

Perhaps Wolf’s stand really has embarrassed local hacks?

Mr. HoWARd Goes to Wellington

John HoWARd left the West Island recently to travel to Wellington in the North. Peace Action Wellington organised a traditional welcoming ceremony:

Howard met by protesters in NZ
Xavier La Canna in Wellington [AAP]
February 15, 2007

PRIME Minister John Howard was targeted by anti-war campaigners when he arrived for talks in New Zealand today, his political woes over Iraq following him across the Tasman.

[Three] people were arrested as about 50 anti-war demonstrators staged a noisy protest as Mr Howard arrived in Wellington, ahead of talks with New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark tomorrow.

The protesters blocked the street outside Premier House – Ms Clark’s Wellington residence where she greeted Mr Howard today – capping off a week that has been full of Iraq controversy for the Australian Prime Minister…

But not, unfortunately, because The Little Digger — having already pledged to aid George II to the last man and the last dollar — was volunteering to send Richard, Melanie and Tim to Iraq, but because he reckons Senator Barack Obama is the answer to Osama bin-Laden‘s prayers. A bizarre concept. As a press release from PAW states:

Johnny boy has been up to no good. His contribution of troops to the on-going bloodbath in Iraq implicates him in the death of 650,000 civilians. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s also agreed to build a new uranium mine on Aboriginal land in the Northern Territory so that he can sell uranium to China. Needless to say, this might just give a little fuel to another nuclear arms race.

John Howard is George W Bush’s best “sheriff” in the so-called “War on Terrorism”. Tell John that racist, sexist warmongers are not welcome in Aotearoa.

Unfortunately, it appears that while racist, sexist warmongers are not welcomed by the public, they are welcomed by the police, who arrested three protesters and broke some poor bastard’s glasses. (NB. Mick Armstrong of Socialist Alternative has issued a statement condemning the protest, and claiming that between 20 to 40 anarchists from Australia were responsible for the broken spectacles…)
