P.J. O’Rourke vs. Pierre Bourdieu

Riding along on my pushbike on the the Information Superhighway I stumbled upon the following comment:

O’Rourke’s “Seoul Brothers” from around 1986 is one of my favourite pieces of writing of any form: funny, moral, and as substantive an account of political practice as you might find in Pierre Bourdieu.

I see.

Oddly enough, P.J. appears in relation to Pure Poison, a new blog @ Crikey, the use value of which is subject to some debate: Tim Blair and Andrew Bolt vs. Crikey: Upscaling the blog wars or big yawn? (Larvatus Prodeo); Blog Wars Redux (skepticlawyer).

Anyways, here’s a few quotes from P.J. on Korea, Australia, and France:

“They don’t like anyone who isn’t Korean, and they don’t like each other all that much, either. They’re hardheaded, hard-drinking, tough little bastards, ‘the Irish of Asia’.”

“The Australian language is easier to learn than boat talk. It has a vocabulary of about six words.”

“The French are a smallish, monkey-looking bunch and not dressed any better, on average, than the citizens of Baltimore. True, you can sit outside in Paris and drink little cups of coffee, but why this is more stylish than sitting inside and drinking large glasses of whiskey I don’t know.”

~ P.J. O’Rourke, Holidays in Hell, Picador, London, 1989, pp.54, 154, 199

And some more P.J., on Korea and kimchi:

“Seoul Brothers” — It’s 1987 and Koreans want democracy and one of various presidential candidates all called Kim. P.J. gets caught up in tear gas and rioting.

“I was . . . overwhelmed by the amazing stink of kimchi, the garlic and hot-pepper sauerkraut that’s breakfast, lunch and dinner in Korea. Its odor rises from this nation of 40 million in a miasma of eyeglass-fogging kimchi breath, throat-searing kimchi burps and terrible, pants-splitting kimchi farts. . . .The Koreans are . . perfectly capable of a three-hour lunch, and so are Giannini and I. We ordered dozens of bowls of pickles, garlics, red peppers and hot sauces and dozens of plates of spiced fish and vegetables and great big bottles of OB beer and mixed it all with kimchi so strong it would have sent a Mexican screaming from the room with tongue in flames. By the time we drove, weaving, back to Seoul, you could have used our breath to clean your oven.”

As intended, “Seoul Brothers” (originally published in Rolling Stone, February 11, 1988) caused some small controversy at the time: ‘In 1988, hip Rolling Stone magazine featured an [article] titled “Seoul Brothers,” about South Korean presidential elections. The article said that Koreans “all look alike — the same Blackglama hair, the same high-boned pie-plate face, the same tea-stain complexion, the same sharp-focused look in 1 million identical anthracite eyes”.’ In fact:

March 18, 1988

“‘Rolling Stone’ Concedes to Three Korean Demands”

Protests from a coalition of 41 Korean American organizations and individuals against a derogatory article titled “Seoul Brothers” pressured Rolling Stone magazine into dedicating part of its future publications in redress.

“The magazine agreed to publish an article each about Koreans and Korean Americans, print a full page of critical letters with an editorial apology, and hire Asian American interns.”

O’Rourke’s Bourdieu-like powers of analysis and observation are noted by idiot blogger Aaron McKenzie in Border Collies Wanted (August 20, 2005) and Chalhaesso (August 23, 2005).

George Katsiaficas is another well-known travel writer — an aspiring P.J., if you will — whose semi-hilarious attempts to reach the heights from which both PJ and Pierre write is a feature of his reflections on the antics of those steenky kimchi Koreans, all with the same Blackglama hair, the same high-boned pie-plate face, the same tea-stain complexion, the same sharp-focused look in 1 million identical anthracite eyes:

The Gwangju people’s uprising of 1980 [see Comparing the Paris Commune and the Kwangju People’s Uprising: A Preliminary Assessment, PDF] was the fixed point around which dictatorship was transformed into democracy in South Korea. Years afterwards, its energy continues to resonate strongly across the world. Its history provides both a glimpse of free societies of the future and a realistic example for others whose dreams of parliamentary democracy remain unfulfilled. The most important dimensions of the Gwangju uprising are its affirmation of human dignity and prefiguration of substantive democracy. Gwangju has a meaning in Korean history that can only be compared to that of the Paris Commune in French history and of the battleship Potemkin in Russian history. Like the Paris Commune, the people of Gwangju spontaneously rose up and governed themselves until they were brutally suppressed by indigenous military forces abetted by an outside power. And like the battleship Potemkin, the people of Gwangju have repeatedly signaled the advent of revolution in Korea—in recent times from the 1894 Tonghak rebellion and the 1929 student revolt to the 1980 uprising…

Protests continued to intensify, and the glorious victory of the Minjung movement in 1987 centered around a massive outpouring of popular protest that began on June 10, 1987. For nineteen days, hundreds of thousands of people mobilized in the streets demanding direct presidential elections. When Gwangju native Lee Han-yol was killed in a student protest near Yonsei University, more than one million people gathered to bury him. As in the Philippines a year earlier, massive occupation of public space compelled the military to relent—in this case by agreeing to hold direct elections for president. In July and August, thousands of strikes involving millions of workers broke out. Although the government granted major concessions, the struggle continued.

The Autonomous Wave of Workers’ Struggle

Few countries have witnessed the kind of massive outpouring of grievances witnessed by Korea in 1987. The June Uprising successfully won civil liberties and elections, but the daily lives of workers were still miserably dictated by poverty and drudgery. Encouraged by the success of the democracy movement, grass-roots actions in the country’s large factories emerged at a dizzying pace and intensity. In July and August, more than three million workers in over 3000 workplaces erupted in unison, demanding substantial wage increases, improved working conditions and independent unions. Within two weeks of the government’s announcement of direct elections, labor unrest erupted like a volcano and spread throughout the country. With no central organization, wildcat strikes, work stoppages, street actions, plant closures and marches were spontaneously organized. The capacity of Korean workers for self-organization and action in this period is a major indication of the capacity of ordinary people to take control of their lives and articulate their needs and to act upon them…

~ George Katsiaficas, ‘From Gwangju to Tiananmen: East Asian Autonomous Movements Remembered’, October 2006

As for Pierre…

The figure of the intellectual treads a precarious path between celebrity and marginality. Few knew this as much as France’s leading sociologist of the modern era, Pierre Bourdieu. On his death in January 2002, the French newspaper Libération declared Bourdieu “les champs du partisan”, a “sociologue de combat” and “militant scientifique”.

A leading figure in the radical movements that swept France in the late 1990s, Bourdieu had become synonymous with critical opposition to the vagaries of an increasingly naturalised neoliberal agenda. He would no doubt have balked at the perverse (but predictable) decision to place eulogies from Lionel Jospin and Jacques Chirac alongside pictures of the megaphoned sociologist demonstrating before his occupation of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in 1998. He was no fan of the media, famously dedicating a whole book, On Television, to an analysis of the unconditional submission of television and journalism to unfettered market pressures. He was, in any case, much more than his public effigy permitted, not least — along with P.J. O’Rourke — one of the most formidable thinkers of the condition of modernity, its institutions, ideas and experiences…

~ Pithy, polemical and paradoxical, Nick Prior (“finds plenty to think about in a new translation of one of Pierre Bourdieu’s last works”), Times Higher Education, May 8, 2008

An uncanny resemblance, for sure.

Among other things, P.J. currently serves as ‘H.L. Mencken Research Fellow’ @ the Cato Institute. Cato’s 2007 revenues were over $24 million, and it has approximately 105 full-time employees, 75 adjunct scholars, and 23 fellows, plus interns. It is a conservative institute, for conservative people. Thus P.J. on ‘liberals’: “Liberals consider people to be nuisances. People are always needing more government resources to feed, house, and clothe them and to pick up the trash around their FEMA trailers and to make sure their self-esteem is high enough to join community organizers lobbying for more government resources” (We Blew It, Weekly Standard, November 17, 2008). Note that “Cato’s Social Security work is a perfect example of fulfilling our pioneering mission: to identify vital public policy problems and provide unique solutions.”

And unique thinking:

American political methodology is an ontological construct. No, I don’t know what I’m talking about, but it’s true anyway. Political “science”–like that puppy from the same litter, the dismal science of economics–is not science; it’s a branch of moral philosophy. Yet try talking moral philosophy with a politician. Politicians will talk strategy and tactics and policies and programs until they’re blue in the face, or you strangle them and they turn blue.

The problem on the left is, now that Karl Marx has forsaken them, they have no philosophy. Thank goodness. Think what evil creeps liberals would be if their plans to enfeeble the individual, exhaust the economy, impede the rule of law, and cripple national defense were guided by a coherent ideology instead of smug ignorance. As for our side, conservatism is a gut reaction for most of us, and a done deal for the rest. The moral philosophy of American politics can be explained briefly and clearly, and, the Constitution being written, it has been…

~ P.J. O’Rourke, Mr. Sununu Goes to Washington: The political philosophy of an actual politician, The Weekly Standard, June 16, 2008 (Vol.13, No.38)

“Whether you agree with [P.J.] or not…he writes a helluva piece.” ~ Richard Nixon

Overcoming Joel Kovel

Samir Amin, Director of the Third World Forum, reckons Joel Kovel’s new(est) book Overcoming Zionism “is absolutely fundamental for those who reject the unfortunate confusion between Jews, Judaism, Zionism and the State of Israel — a confusion which is the basis for systematic manipulation by the imperialist power system. It convincingly argues in favour of a single secular state for Israelis and Palestinians as the only democratic solution for the region.” According to Joel, the book’s publication has served as a trigger for his dimissal from his post as Alger Hiss Chair of Social Studies at Bard College.

Statement of Joel Kovel Regarding His Termination by Bard College:

On February 7 I received a letter from Michèle Dominy, Dean of the College, informing me that my contract would not be renewed this July 1 and that I would be moved to emeritus status as of that day. She wrote that this decision was made by President Botstein, Executive Vice-President Papadimitriou and herself, in consultation with members of the Faculty Senate.

This document argues that this termination of service is prejudicial and motivated neither by intellectual nor pedagogic considerations, but by political values, principally stemming from differences between myself and the Bard administration on the issue of Zionism. There is of course much more to my years at Bard than this, including another controversial subject, my work on ecosocialism (The Enemy of Nature). However, the evidence shows a pattern of conflict over Zionism only too reminiscent of innumerable instances in this country in which critics of Israel have been made to pay, often with their careers, for speaking out. In this instance the process culminated in a deeply flawed evaluation process which was used to justify my termination from the faculty…

Joel’s dismissal has been welcomed by some: Ron Radosh of Pajamas Media writes ‘The Dismissal of Joel Kovel: Sanity in Academia’. “The dismissal of Joel Kovel… is a victory for sanity in academia. It has been a long time coming. At last Bard’s students will not have to suffer the shibboleths Kovel offered as part of a supposedly solid academic curriculum.” Others are less excited: see Academic Freedom News: Ward Churchill, Joel Kovel (Maximilian Forte, Open Anthropology).

God Hates Australia! Bushfire victims are fags! Etc.!

Awesome!

Recently, Pastor Danny Nalliah of ‘Catch the Fire Ministries’ claimed that God had come to him in a dream, and proclaimed that the people of Victoria would be punished for allowing abortion to be de-criminalised: “…the following words came to me in a flash from the Spirit of God, ‘My wrath is about to be released upon Australia, in particular Victoria, for approving the slaughter of the innocent children in the womb. Now, call on My people to repent and pray!’” This revelation proved to be slightly embarrassing to at least some of his supporters: Federal MPs Steve Fielding of Family First and former Tory party Treasurer Peter Costello.

Tomorrow morning, survivors of the catastrophic Black Saturday fires and community leaders, religious and secular, will gather at Rod Laver Arena to mark the national day of mourning for victims of the fires. The ceremony, “Together for Victoria”, will not be a funeral. For the many families who are unable to farewell their loved ones because coronial inquiries have not been completed, however, this public rite will be especially important. As anyone who has lost someone close to them knows, grieving does not cease when the funeral is over. But it has its rhythms and its pattern, like all that is human, and there comes a time in that pattern when a public outpouring of grief helps the process of healing.

Joining the survivors — “these insincere, violent, feces-eating brutes” — will be supporters of the Westboro Baptist Church.

I wonder if Danny or Steve or Peter will be there too?

02/22/2009 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM | Melbourne, AU | Rod Laver Arena – God does not hear the prayers of Australia Swan St. & Batman Ave.

One of your local major media outlets sent us an email which reads: “Australia Hates You”. YAY! We are in good company because Australia made it clear, decades ago, that they hate God. So, now that all is clear, to wit: God Hates Australia and Australia Hates God, let us speak to the fact that God is causing fires in one part of Australia killing hundreds. Then in another part of Australia God is sending floods. That is called MOCKING people. Then these insincere, violent, feces-eating brutes call themselves having a “Australia National Day of Mourning”. Here’s the only thing you freaks from “down under” bringing to pass these words: Ezekiel 7:27 The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled: I will do unto them after their way, and according to their deserts will I judge them; and they shall know that I am the LORD. Matthew 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. The Lord God will be coming shortly, so Prepare to Meet Thy God Australia. AMEN!

10,000 Jackboots Makin’ Whoopee in Dresden

Charlie and His Orchestra:

German nutzis held one of their biggest annual rallies last week (February 14) in Dresden, with somewhere between 5–6,000 jackbooting around the city (under the protection of 4,000 police). Approximately 10,000 counter-demonstrated, 6,500 of whom attended a rally, while several thousand militants attempted to blockade the route of the nutzi march (but were prevented by police).

Saturday’s demonstration by around 6,000 neo-Nazis in Dresden to mark the anniversary of the destruction of the city by Allied warplanes in February 1945 was a “dramatic sign” of the growing strength of the far right in Germany, a leading member of the country’s Jewish community said.

There were almost twice [?] as many far-right demonstrators as last year and police said they were surprised the far right had managed to mobilize so many supporters this time to mark the 64th anniversary of the air raids that devastated the city on Feb. 13 and 14, 1945. It was one of the biggest far-right demonstrations in Germany since the war.

~ Strong Neo-Nazi Showing in Dresden Heightens Concerns, Spiegel, February 16, 2009

Spiegel : Photo Gallery: Neo-Nazis Stage Big Protest in Dresden.

Later that day, a small group of ‘autonomous nationalists’ (‘national anarchists’) attacked a busload of leftist trade unionists.

Attack sparks fear of rising neo-Nazi violence, The Local, February 17, 2009:

“A vicious attack at a motorway rest stop after a huge neo-Nazi march in Dresden last weekend has sparked alarm across Germany. As David Wroe reports, some believe the country’s far-right scene is undergoing a dangerous transformation…”

Trade unionist Holger Kindler has been to at least 20 rallies to protest neo-Nazi gatherings in various German cities and towns. But he says he’s never seen anything like what happened last Saturday.

Kindler was among the 80 unionists and leftists who were having a break at a motorway rest stop in the eastern German state of Thuringia on Saturday when a busload of 41 far-right extremists pulled in. He and his colleagues had just joined some 10,000 people demonstrating a major neo-Nazi march in Dresden.

”One of my colleagues who was in the car park called me on my cell phone and told me they had arrived and were aggressive,” he said. ”I just went into shock. It was a Nazi crew that was very political, not just sub-cultural. They weren’t satisfied with walking through Dresden.”

Five anti-fascist demonstrators were left injured, including one with serious skull fractures. The neo-Nazis weren’t bumbling skinheads, Kindler said. They were autonome Nationalisten or free nationalists – a radical, political segment of the far-right scene in Germany who are growing in number and, experts fear, poised to create a new wave of neo-Nazi violence…

The violent antics of the autonome Nationalisten reflect both their poltical ideology and their political marginalisation from the formal party structures of the NPD.

Well, kinda.

In reality, it makes sense to have a division of labour within the fascist movement, and while the NPD pursues a political road to power, the broader, extra-parliamentary movement attempts to control the streets; working together, the two can establish bases of operation in small towns, villages and neighbourhoods. It also makes good sense for the far right to appropriate anarchist and leftist imagery, organisation, and tactics. (After all, since the early decades of the twentieth century, fascist movements, being essentially parasitical phenomena, have made regular and eclectic use of such raw political material.) This is especially so in Germany, where the de-Nazified state has instituted various legal measures intended to outlaw public displays of loyalty to the Nazi regime and its doctrines.

The chief proponent of this strategy in Australia is ex-NPD member Welf Herfurth, who has established the ‘New Right Australia (and er, New Zealand?)’, via which he has managed to gather about him a few teenage refugees from Stormfront and a hadful of other fascist lurkers. More recently, after having been given the cold shoulder by boneheads belonging to Blood & Honour and the Southern Cross Hammerskins, Welf has attempted to branch out into The Wonderful World of Bonehead by establishing a rival sect, Volksfront Australia. In this endeavour he is being aided by the lead shouter in nutzi/Viking Power Reich ‘n’ Roll band Blood Red Eagle, Novocastrian Doug Schmitt, whose former allegiances were to B&H and the SCHS.

Nutzis have been marching on Dresden every year for the last 10, and along with the Salem march in Sweden, the Dresden rally is the largest such gathering in Western Europe. This year’s rally was one of the largest nutzi rallies since the collapse of Nazi Germany in 1945, exceeding by nearly a thousand last year’s rally. On the numbers game (‘Counter-Marches Don’t Impress the Nazis a Bit’, Spiegel Online, February 16, 2009):

The left-leaning Berliner Zeitung writes:

“The example of Dresden shows how institutionalized anti-right wing protests have become. One constantly sees the same reflexes: If there is a neo-Nazi demonstration or attack, political parties and labor unions speak out. They demand that the (right-extremist political party) NPD be banned and a counter-demonstration is organized at which rock bands play and politicians speak. The vast majority of residents remain at home and take part via the media.”

“In Dresden, one can see where this is leading. Now that huge neo-Nazi gatherings have been banned (elsewhere), the right-wing has adopted the capital of Saxony as its premiere march location. The citizens of Dresden must take action and can no longer leave it to their politicians to save their city’s reputation.”

The Ward Churchill Trial

A new blog is being published in support of Native American scholar and political activist Ward Churchill:

A little over a year ago, Ward Churchill was fired from his position as a professor at the University of Colorado on trumped up charges of academic misconduct. His firing was the result of one of the filthiest media smear campaigns in modern history, crushing pressure brought to bear by a number of hack politicians including Governor Bill Owens, and the overwhelming cowardice of CU’s administration.

For the first time, an impartial body is set to review the facts of the case. On March 9th, Ward Churchill’s lawsuit against the University of Colorado begins. For detailed information about the pig circus which led to Ward Churchill’s firing, see here.

This blog will track media attention around the case, and provide timely updates, including what you can do to help. If you’d like to attend the trial, or need help organizing or planning events around the trial, please email me at [email protected].

Did you know AIM people killed JonBenet Ramsey? I have had that theory for years. They did it to bring down the government in Boulder and to discredit the FBI and police.

True story.

Speaking of Tall Tales & True, another new (Crikey-sponsored) blog is called Poison Pen: “Exposing intellectual dishonesty in the mainstream media, across the political spectrum. We’re looking at you, Bolt, Blair, Marr, Akerman, Albrechtsen, and whoever else wishes to stray onto the path of fatuous opinion.”

Stay or go, I predict that they’ll never run out of material.

Careful, They Might Hear You

Jewel Topsfield reports that, so as to lessen their vulnerability to assault and robbery, Indian students may be instructed to talk (in their native language/s) more softly on public transport and to avoid carrying iPods or laptops (Indians told to keep low profile, The Age, February 19, 2009). This follows reports of increased numbers of such attacks: “Robberies in Melbourne’s western suburbs jumped by 27 per cent last financial year. Police estimated almost a third of victims were of Indian appearance.”

…Inspector Scott Mahony, of Brimbank police, said it was crucial to stop Indian students becoming victims and address their mistrust of police. “They need to make sure they walk through a well-lit route, even if it might be longer, and they are not openly displaying signs of wealth with iPods and phones, and not talking loudly in their native language,” Inspector Mahony said…

Dayajot Singh, who helped organise a protest last year over attacks on Indians, said Indian students should be taught crime prevention as part of their university induction course. “They should be taught that if you go on public transport in this country, people don’t talk loudly, they talk in a low voice. If you talk loudly it could be taken as violent behaviour. It’s different cultural behaviour — speaking loudly to each other is not taken offence to in India.”

He said an important message was not to carry valuables on trains at night.

There are a number of issues at stake here. One is discerning the motivation/s of attackers. That is, are ‘Indian’ students assaulted because of their supposedly ostentatious displays of ‘wealth’ — in this instance, iPods and laptops — and/or as a result of racist antagonism and their presumed ethnic identity? Secondly, is it reasonable to ask the victims of such attacks to assume responsibility for lessening their occurrence by — as suggested — speaking less loudly on public transport?

Insofar as such attacks are crimes of opportunity, the principal motivating factor is the potential reward ~versus~ the risk of FAIL, possible arrest, and punishment. Basically, ‘can I get away with it’? If, all things being equal, someone is more likely to ‘get away’ with assaulting and robbing an Indian student than they are a non-Indian student — or perceives this to be the case — then it makes sense that the proportion of such attacks would be relatively high.

Modifying behaviour on the part of Indian students to better accommodate presumed ‘Australian cultural norms’ (‘Aussies’ aren’t loud on public transport) may address one issue, but insofar as such attacks are motivated by straightforward malice towards Indians (and/or those perceived to be Indian), there is very little that may be done, at least not by Indian students.

In any case, whether in response to particular forms of behaviour, or mere appearance, obviously, the real responsibility for such assaults lies with the attacker, both in law and in principle. (And since when did talking ‘loudly’ (in another language) warrant assault? If it did — and equally obviously — it wouldn’t just be Indian students who were victimised in this fashion!)

Finally, many people carry iPods, phones and/or laptops. Being discreet with such items in a context where possessing them may lead to assault and robbery makes sense — on one level. In the final analysis, however, the root problem would appear to be racism on the part of the (presumably) non-Indian public, and the perception that Indian students are ‘soft targets’.

How to confront that issue is another matter.

Stolen from Skull / Bones. CBS notes that, in addition to the above, ‘None Of These Candidates’ got 6,251 votes and ‘James Harris’ 2,618.

Well, that’s some of the candidates.

But apparently, there were freaking hundreds, and scores of parties contesting the election, from ‘A Connecticut Party’ to the ‘Builders Party’ to ‘Concerned Citizens’ to the ‘Working Class Party’, ‘Workers World’ and ‘Yes’. Some personal favourites:

Jack Grimes (United Fascist Union-Pennsylvania)

The United Fascist Union was incorporated in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1996 as a non-profit political club to promote the economic theories and political ideologies of Benito Mussolini and Saddam Hussein.

Since that time our Director, Jack Grimes has appeared on television and done hundreds of radio shows for the United Fascist Union and has ran as a Presidential Candidate in the 2000 and 2004 Presidential Elections.

On this website you can read Mr. Jack Grimes’ Statement of Candidacy for the 2008 U. S. Presidential Election as well as a FAQ sheet for the United Fascist Union which will explain to you why it is important that you vote for our candidate and help us establish a Corporate State.

Fascism is the one economic theory that has been proven time after time. It can raise the standard-of-living and improve the quality of life for all citizens fortunate enough to live in a Fascist Country. This should be a very good reason for importing these ideologies to America as everyone deserves a better quality of life than they have had under the oligarchy of the mega bankers and billionaire elite.

Edward N. Schwarz (Youth International Party-New York)

Abbie Hoffman defined Yippie! as “…a hippie who’s been beaten up by the cops.” Well I’d say it doesn’t take much imagination to believe we’ve all been beaten up by the Justice [NOT] Department in one way or another of late times. And this, your KatManDo candidate for president USA, has something to say about it and the willful actions to back them up. I don’t do girlieman!

Jonathon “The Impaler” Sharkey (Vampire, Witches & Pagan Party-New Jersey)

The United Vampyre World Organization

* Candidate: Jonathon “The Impaler” Sharkey, King of the Vampyre

* Platform: To serve, protect and advance Vampyre Covens and Vampyres and the Witch, Pagan, Wiccan, Satanic, Lycan and other Kin Communities in America.

* Representative quote: “Unlike the rules of engagement U.S. troops follow, members of the VN’s Armed Forces will be anything but compassionate and civil to our enemies. To ensure an enemy is dead, I will instruct that VWP [Vampyres, Witches, Pagans Party] Militia troops decapitate their enemies.”

* Why you might vote for this candidate: You are a badly confused fan of the 60s-inflected pop of Vampire Weekend.

* Why you might not: If, despite the heinousness of the crime, you still do not believe that three-time DUI/DWI offenders should be “IMPALE[D]” by Jonathan.

Greens Kill! Timber Industry Saves!

Praise Jesus!

Both the hoi polloi and the chattering classes have been whipped up into a frenzy by the Victorian bushfires.

Professional scribbler Miranda Devine is typically subtle when it comes time — as it must — to apportioning blame: ‘Green ideas must take blame for deaths’ (The Sydney Morning Herald, February 12, 2009).

In essence — the Devine Miss M argues — it wasn’t climate change or arsonists what killed perhaps as many as 300 people. “It was the power of green ideology over government to oppose attempts to reduce fuel hazards before a megafire erupts, and which prevents landholders from clearing vegetation to protect themselves” what done it.

Devine cites two experts to verify her claims. The first is Scott Gentle of ‘Gunns are Great!’ timber industry lobby group Timber Communities Australia (TCA). In 2007, Scot gave evidence to a Victorian Government Inquiry into Impact of Public Land Management Practices on Bushfires in Victoria.

The submission by the TCA is available here [PDF].

Whatever Scott may have said during his personal testimony (from which Miranda quotes), he did not consider it appropriate to include in his/the TCA’s written submission, the Summary of which reads:

The fires of 2006/7 were mainly in forested areas. Be it dumb luck or good management only one life was lost. Successive dry years may have added fuel to the fire but it also restricted fire movements as many pastured areas were only stubble and not the long dry grass of past years.

This committee into the issue of fire management has an opportunity to review many of the procedures regarding the fires. I have only scratched the surface as to the many simple complex issues around fire management but there has been a clear message from many of our members.

The power of green ideology over government to oppose attempts to reduce fuel hazards before a megafire erupts, and which prevents landholders from clearing vegetation to protect themselves, is the reason many people will die in future bushfires.

They believe it is time to look at changing management practices for all the forest estate and bring in a system for active forest management. It is time that communities in these areas are given a greater say in decisions that directly place their communities in jeopardy.

The voice of country people is often drowned out by the noise of the city especially yuppie columnists from Sydney’s North Shore. You have an opportunity to make sure their voice is heard within Government.

If there is an opportunity to discuss these simple complex issues further TCA would appreciate the chance as this paper does little justice to the angst and pain felt in many rural communities.

The other expert Devine cites is Dr Phil Cheney. Coincidentally, Dr Phil is cited with approval by Scott/TCA, and was once a member of ‘The Stretton Group’, which he/TCA describe as “an apolitical, not-for-profit group” comprising “a disparate association of volunteers” — which is precisely how “The Stretton Group” describes itself.

The Stretton Group’s first publication is titled ‘”The Green Inferno”: The Politics of Bushfires and Conservation’, and is a transcript of an address Dr Phil gave at the Group’s inaugural meeting on Thursday, 25th November, 2004. It’s available for download from the Institute of Public Affairs [PDF].

The address is not a scientific paper, but a bland argument in favour of encouraging responsibility for fire management among diverse ‘land management agencies’. Cheney makes reference to “the problems that have arisen out of the rapid expansion of conservation reserves in the last 25 years”, but does not blame ‘green ideology’ as such. Rather: “The land grab for conservation reserves provided the opportunity to place management over much of the formerly “unprotected land” but it was not accompanied by the funding needed to implement management. Instead government took the opportunity to reduce expenditure on fire protection by their land management agencies.” (Dr Phil also reckons “Forestry has been a convenient whipping boy for governments attracted by the votes of the green revolution”.)

Guy Rundle (The Australian‘s fuel reduction obsession, Crikey, February 12, 2009) can has some facts:

1. The pros and cons of burning off are heavily debated among bushfire specialists.
2. Forest fuel levels have no effect on fire speed, which was the main killer in these fires.
3. Dryness is a contributor to fire speeds.
4. Forestry activities may promote dryness by thinning forest canopies.
5. Climate change may be a factor, and if it is, a different set of strategies will need to be employed than if it isn’t, so it’s worth debating.
6. Fires of the “Black Saturday” intensity burn through burnt-off bush because they move at crown and canopy level.
7. The burn off levels advocated by green groups are of the same order as those advocated by those bushfire experts who believe that higher burn-off levels increase risk of fire without giving consequent benefit.
8. Burn-off levels do not play a role in urban green votes, and they never have.

In any case, while experts disagree over whether “prescribed burning” is The Magic Bullet, I think the simplest solution is to cut down all the trees.

Problem solved.

The Stretton Group

In addition to Dr Phil, the other members of the Group are Simon Paton, bushfire and forestry experts Peter Attiwill, Athol Hodgson and David Packham, Bill Middleton, Tory politician Stewart McArthur (whose daddy Sir Gordon Stewart McArthur (1896 – 1965) was also a farmer and a Tory MP) and lawyer and “iconoclastic” thinker Tony Cutcliffe.

Simon Paton is a farmer. Devine may have had Simon in mind when she concluded her article (“There is an opening now in Victoria for a predatory legal firm with a taste for David v Goliath class actions”) as Simon has been down this road before: “A group of Victorian farmers says it will sue the State Government over its handling of last summer’s bushfires. The group is preparing a class action which alleges the State’s Department of Sustainability and Environment was negligent because it didn’t do enough to prevent or control the fires, which they say have put some farmers out of business” (Farmers pursue class action against Vic Govt, AM, December 2, 2003, Reporter: Ben Knight).

In fact, a month prior to Devine’s scribbles, another class action was announced. “MELBOURNE lawyer Charles Slidders is taking legal action on behalf of farmers against the Victorian Government over losses from the 2003 and Grampians fires… The writ follows a threat made by Mr Slidders in The Weekly Times in early 2007, that he would take legal action if the Government failed to compensate farmers” (Writ seeks fire compo, Peter Hunt, The Weekly Times, January 8, 2009).

…Slidders’ writ follows the failure of an earlier attempt by the Stretton Group to seek compensation on behalf of farmers whose land was devastated by the 2003 fires. The Stretton Group, comprising mainly fire and land management experts and farmers, began a statement of claim against government agencies in 2004, alleging they were liable for the size and severity of the fires. The group did not take legal action, but did pass its statement of claim on to Slidders. However, Stretton Group member Simon Paton said he knew little about the Slidders writ. Daniel Oldham, a partner at Slidders Lawyers, told media last week the case was in its infancy. The Government has repeatedly denied there is a valid legal claim in regard to compensation for the impact of bushfires.

Simon is/was also the Convenor of ‘The Eureka Project’, of which Tony Cutcliffe is/was a director. In his capacity as Convenor, Simon authored ‘A Case of Burning Neglect: A report from North East Victorians regarding the 2003 bushfire crisis’, April 30, 2003 (available as as PDF from The Eureka Project).

Athol Hodgson is a member — along with half ‘The Stretton Group’ — of yet another industry lobby group, ‘Forest Fire (Vic) Inc.’. Curiously, contra Devine, this mob is full of praise for the Victorian Government: “The Findings are free from political bias. The Recommendations are specific to core issues, unequivocal, and in the view of Forest Fire Victoria, attainable. The use of knowledge and experience of people outside government agencies is especially commendable.”

Killer Greens

In addition to murderous green ideology, Devine makes explicit and unflattering reference in her article to Nillumbik Shire Council, “A council committed to reducing carbon emissions”.

Nillumbik Shire has seven councillors; none are Greens.

(Yarra Ranges Shire has nine councillors, only one of whom — Samantha Dunn — is a Green.)

The Victorian Government can has three Green MPs, all Members of the Upper House: Greg Barber, Colleen Hartland and Sue Pennicuik. The other 37 members are non-Greens. In the Lower House, there are 0 Greens and 88 non-Greens MPs.

Of course, Devine & Co. are less interested in averting future environmental disasters so much as pursuing an ideological war against those deemed enemies; forces which threaten to derail the wholly rational and completely sensible development of Australia’s abundant human (and other natural) resources for the benefit of the elites who own and manage them.

To paraphrase a Great Thinker, if politicians are intent on whipping up a lynch mob to divert attention from their own culpability, it is not greenies who should be hanging from lamp-posts but neo-conservative columnists.

Of course, I am not urging anyone to commit violence against a “journalist”.

Meaning the Divine Miss M is in mortal danger.

Aaand remember folks…

Hell hath no fury like a vested interest masquerading as a moral principle.

Brendan Sokaluk vs. Kenny Glenn

    Update :

Brendan Sokaluk : Facebook confirms removing arson vigilante groups, Brigid Andersen, ABC, February 17, 2009; Sokaluk’s trial by police and media, Greg Barns, Crikey, February 18, 2009.

Kenny Glenn : Allegedly, the boys, 14 and 16, uploaded several more videos two weeks earlier, which included more abuse of Dusty as well as another black-and-white cat whose name is not known at this time. Both cats have been removed from the abusive home and will be adopted into better homes. Kenny Glenn and Weston Glenn are facing two charges of animal cruelty in Lawton, Oklahoma, and go to trial later this week.

“Facebook vigilantes, frustrated at a court order protecting a man charged with lighting one of the deadly Victorian bushfires, which killed at least 11 people, have published [Brendan Sokaluk’s] photograph and address on the social networking site and threatened his life… Links to Sokaluk’s profiles on MySpace and MyYearBook were widely circulated.” ~ Vigilantes publish alleged arsonist’s image online, Asher Moses, The Age, February 16, 2009.

Sokaluk’s MySpace profile, however, has been deleted, and his profile on MyYearBook is set to Private.

Further: “THOUSANDS of people who posted messages of hate and threats on the internet relating to accused arsonist Brendan Sokaluk in the days after he was charged potentially face serious criminal charges, lawyers and internet regulators warn. Since Friday, at least five groups on social networking site Facebook had attracted about 3500 people, with most users either threatening or inciting violence towards the accused…” ~ Online hate mail threat to arson case, Selma Milovanovic, The Age, February 17, 2009.

The New Zealand Herald claims ‘Accused arsonist angry at girlfriend’s rejection’ (February 16, 2009):

…On the website’s homepage [that is, his now-deleted MySpace profile], he attacks a former girlfriend among rants full of spelling mistakes.

“I’m a young happy male who wants to meet a young loven female to marrid,” he writes.

“My interest are to enjoy life to the fallest and not with …… because she r***s behind your back and lies a lot.”

“I’d like to meet my sole mate not some old hag.”

“Sex sells but love larst for ever.”

Sokaluk writes: “l don,t read books because they put me to sleep. my heroe is mother earth with out her we all would be dead.”

Sokaluk logged on to another social networking website, myYearbook, last Wednesday, four days after the hellfire on Saturday, February 7.

He was arrested two days later on Friday.

He describes his mood as “dirty” because “no one love (sic) him”.

His quote is “looken for a young wife to shear my wealf with her”.

He received Valentine’s Day greetings from half a dozen women on the site…

Duncan Riley @ The Inquisitr (Bushfire arsonist Brendan Sokaluk worships mother earth on spooky MySpace page, February 15, 2009) claims “His MySpace profile also suggests that Sokaluk has an affiliation to a US religious group by the name of “The Truth of God,” a group known to hold extreme views against women clergy and gay people.”

The two Facebook groups are Brendan Sokaluk, the Victoian [sic] Bushfires Arsonist, must burn in hell and make it know [sic] Brendan Sokaluk is the man who was arrested for arson.

Dr Matthew Rimmer, senior lecturer in law at the Australian National University, said Facebook is in much the same position as any other media organisation.

“Much like a newspaper, Facebook needs to be careful what it publishes because it’s not just the author who is liable. Sometimes the publisher is liable,” he said.

Dr Rimmer said Facebook users needed to think carefully before posting. Individuals who posted comments that breach confidentiality, privacy or defamation laws, or any relevant court orders, could be held liable.

“Just as one could be personally held liable for writing a defamatory letter that gets published in a newspaper, one could be held liable for publishing something defamatory or breaching a court order on Facebook,” he said.

“The reason there are suppression orders in the first place is to ensure a fair trial. You don’t want there to be a mistrial in some way because the jury has been prejudiced by, for instance, reading things on Facebook.

“Perversely, making comments on Facebook about the persons alleged to have engaged in arson might be counter-productive in terms of legal action brought against them.”

See also : Will Brendan Sokaluk ever come to trial?, Greg Barns, Crikey, February 16, 2009: “That Mr Sokaluk is an as-yet innocent man appears to be completely forgotten by millions of people… [presiding Victorian magistrate John] Klestadt was faced with the reality that the UK newspaper, the Daily Mail, couldn’t give a toss about the rights of the accused and his safety when it published his name and alleged details about Sokaluk yesterday — all available for every Victorian to read on the net. And it was not alone in ignoring the suppression order…”

Bonus!

In another example of vigilantism, two teenage boys have been tracked down after rather stupidly uploading to YouTube a video of one of them — glennspam1, aka “Kenny Glenn” of Lawton, OK (USA) — abusing a cat named “Dusty”. Unlike the mountains of nutzi BS which saturates the site, the video has been withdrawn from YouTube; like everything else on the Intertubes, it’s still available online if you search for it. It’s pretty awful — not just the abuse, but the attitude embodied in Kenny’s actions. Thus it’s not that uncommon for young boys to take delight in such things, and animals — being basically defenceless — are obviously regular targets for their sadism. Like other forms of abuse, it flourishes in secrecy. Going public, on the other hand, is stoopid — especially with cats like 4chan around…

Dylan (New Media Research Studio) writes:

Anonymous? Sorry kid. Or, Why You Shouldn’t Torture a Cat and Upload it to YouTube.

…Sitting in his house “Kenny Glenn” probably never thought messing up his cat would bring the internet’s rage on him [or] get him in serious trouble. I should mention that even though I know this kid’s phone number, the school he goes to, his parent’s names and all of their contact information, the names of all of his teachers, the location of his father’s business, and a link to photo of his house, I have no knowledge of hacking and I had to do literally nothing expect click a few links to find that information. I’m not the only one who knows that information either, it’s all free, legal, and has already been seen by probably thousands of people. In fact, if you followed any of those links above you’ve already learned a lot about a complete stranger. Last week we discovered that privacy online is dying or already dead and this is just a punctuation on that thought. If you think that just because you’re wearing a mask and can’t be identified visually you can stay under the radar, then you’re just asking for a very rude awakening. “Kenny Glenn” is a special case, because he just happened to hit the wrong nerve with the wrong people on a Sunday afternoon, but it shows that if somebody or a group of people has got the energy they can use the internet to find enough information to make your life hell. Whether or not you’re a cat abuser or not, the moral of the story is we need to think about what our cyber footprint looks like and how this could potentially affect our real lives. The internets are serious business.
