Gosh and bother and tish and fiffle: “Nottingham University graduate Ms Graham-Single used to sit on Broxtowe Borough Council as a BNP member and her husband [Matt Single] was the BNP’s former head of security”; the pair have been charged with leaking the BNP membership in November 2008.
A man and a woman have been charged under the Data Protection Act after a British National Party membership list was leaked onto the internet, police said today.
Dyfed-Powys Police said the man, aged 27, and woman, aged 30, were due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates Court on 1 September.
The woman is understood to be Sadie Graham, who was expelled from the far-right party in late 2007 after falling out with its leadership.
The BNP called for a police investigation last November after the names, addresses and contact details of some 10,000 of its members were published online.
Party leader Nick Griffin lodged a complaint with Dyfed-Powys, his local force, on the grounds that publishing the list breached human rights and data protection laws.
He described the publication as “a disgraceful act of treachery” by former BNP staff members who were subsequently sacked.
At the time the BNP said the leak was based on its 2007 membership list, although a number of names of people who were not members had been added.
The list, which included details of some members’ jobs, was reported to include serving and former police officers as well as members of the armed forces.
In a statement, Dyfed-Powys Police said: “We can confirm that the two people arrested as part of a joint investigation with Dyfed-Powys Police and the Information Commissioner’s Office in relation to alleged criminal offences under the Data Protection Act have been charged with Section 55 Data Protection Act offences.
“They will appear in Nottingham Magistrates Court on 1 September.
“The arrests followed an investigation into a complaint received about the unauthorised release of the BNP party membership list.”
Note that Sadie the (Alleged) Leaking Lady was investigated by police and initially arrested in connection to the crime in December 2008.
The leaking of the list caused a few headaches for BNP members — See! this Top Ten — and also disclosed the fact that a few dozen whingeing pommy bastards — who’ve *sniff* demonstrated their love *sob* of their country by leaving it for the colonies — were also members of a party dedicated to keeping Britain White British.
The BNP has its Antipodean equivalent in the ‘Australian Protectionist Party’, a tiny group which has as its chief spokesperson Darrin Hodges. Hodges has stood for election, and has also pretended to be an anarchist, joining a few dozen other racist muppets in donning a mask and standing about in Sydney in September 2007. Twelve months later, Darrin had cast aside his ‘anarchism’, and asked the people of Sutherland for a seat in Council Ward D. Unfortunately for Darrin, despite considerable media exposure — and a very handsome face — he came last, garnering just 333 votes or 2% of the total.
A man named Brendan Nelson (did you know he is a DOCTOR?) has decided to retire from his comfy chair in the Federal Parliament.

Other News is that various Tories are jockeying to become his replacement. According to a source in a corporation owned by foreign billionaire (Sir) Rupert Murdoch:
DOCTOR Nelson was elected to federal parliament in 1996, the same year the HoWARd government came to power. He entered parliament after serving three years as the president of the Australian Medical Association. DOCTOR Nelson experienced a meteoritic [sic] rise through the government ranks, taking on the role of education minister in 2001 and defence minister in 2006. His time in office will be be remembered for overseeing the bungled return of soldier Jake Kovco’s body, the introduction of voluntary student unionism and as opposition leader, polling only seven per cent as preferred prime minister.
Big (medical) shoes to fill, obviously. Note that the The Devine Miss M disagrees with this rather harsh assessment of DOCTOR Nelson’s career as a politician (Dare not sip this poisoned chalice, Sydney Morning Herald, August 27, 2009):

The seat of Bradfield is full of Aussie battlers. Christian (The Christian) Kerr reports in another publication owned by foreign billionaire (Sir) Rupert Murdoch — called, ironically, The Australian — that one battler lining up to sit in the comfy chair is John Hart, CEO of Restaurant and Catering Australia (Rudd IR critic John Hart launches Bradfield bid, August 27, 2009).

[DOCTOR] Nelson sees his successor as a necessary injection of fresh blood for a party in a rut, and the field of eight or so candidates mooted is impressive.
The two best are my friends. Tom Switzer, 37, is Nelson’s former adviser and the inspired former opinion editor of The Australian and the Financial Review, a fearless journalist and thinker, with a master’s degree in international relations. Unlike Simon Berger, another Nelson adviser in the running, Switzer did not squib the emissions issue last year. He urged Nelson not to take the pragmatic but irresponsible route of blindly supporting the Government and has written clearly about the costs of the new energy tax.
Then there is Sophie York, 42, barrister, author, lieutenant-commander in the navy reserves, mother of four sons. She is part of a new breed of conservative feminists, generous and warm but with courage and a steely intellect. Each is successful, normal and fun, with a fine mind, good judgment, loving family and clear moral compass.
The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem can trace its origins to Godfrey de Bouillon of the first Crusade, who gathered around him a group of knights who were entrusted with the protection of the religious Chapter of Canons who were present at the Holy Sepulchre of Christ. For twenty years, these knights, and those who came to join their number, protected the Christian presence at the Holy Sepulchre, taking as their banner the red Jerusalem cross popularized by the crusading knights. Among a number of competing factions in Malmö are leftists, Muslims, police and a local yoof gang called ‘Black Cobra’ (or possibly Black Scorpions).
A stylish group of anarchists in Belgrade have recently picked up the gauntlet thrown down by their stylish Greek counterparts and thrown a Molotov @ the Greek Embassy. The action was taken in solidarity with Greek political prisoner Th(e)odoros Iliopoulos, who has been on a hunger strike since July 10. For more infos, see the excellent blog After the Greek Riots.
The Moar You Know : The Molotov cocktail was named by Finnish partisans during the ‘Winter War’ of November 1939–March 1940, in honour of the hack ‘Soviet People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs’ Vyacheslav Molotov. The ‘cocktails’ were intended to complement the ‘food’ Russian bombers were dropping on the Finns.
The Ssangyong defeat cannot be attributed merely to the lame role of the KMWU national organization, which from the beginning allowed the negotiations to be channeled in a narrow focus on “no layoffs”. (By contrast, the local union president, who ultimately signed the surrender document, stayed in the occupied plant right to the end, even though he was not on the layoff list.) Nor can the defeat be fully explained by the atmosphere of economic crisis. Both of these factors undoubtedly played a major role. But above and beyond their undeniable impact, it is the year-in, year-out rollback of the Korean working class, above all through casualization, which now affects more than 50% of the work force. Thousands of workers from nearby plant did repeatedly aid the Ssangyong strike, but it was not enough. The defeat of the Ssangyong strikers, despite their heroism and tenacity, will only deepen the reigning demoralization until a strategy is developed that can mobilize sufficiently broad layers of support, not merely to fight these defensive battles but to go on the offensive.
On a brighter note, two documentaries: one on the ‘Student Housing Action Collective’ (SHAC), the other on Fatso Schmidt. It’s a little-known fact — and a lamentable fault of Daniel Wong’s documentary — that Fatso’s skillz were a singular inspiration for the students @ SHAC; further, that University of Melbourne Vice Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis AC has long-resented Fatso’s iconic status among the yoof, and fears Keyboard Cat like Dinsdale Piranha feared Spiny Norman.
Fatso’s seminal critique of the disaster that is ‘The Melbourne Model’ — rivalled in its stoopid only by the earlier, similarly-failed ‘Melbourne University Private’ — probably didn’t help matters much either.

What We Feel – one of the few bands which exists on the territory of the former USSR, which does not copy popular western groups, but plays tough, acute social, daring music. Guys never wrote vague, non-committal texts. They always expressed their opinion about the things that happen in the city and country they live in the most clear way.
In the country, where defense agencies are persistently looking for extremists on the concerts, organized by youth, while true extremists are killing human rights activists at the Caucasus and journalists in downtown Moscow with perfect impunity. In the country, where fascism became a fashion for the youth, and grandchildren of veterans post up congratulations to Hitler on stadium stands and brag in internet with self-shot videos with the murders of Tajik yard cleaners. In the country, torn by crime, corruption and social inequality. In the country, where to say the truth and to struggle for justice long ago became the occupation dangerous for life and freedom.
Threats, attempts to wreck or ban the concerts, losses of close friends – during 4 years of existence, group passed [through] all that. Group gained its reputation not by words, but by its deeds, behind – more than a hundred concerts in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, three euro-tours in support of Russian antifascist movement, participation in great number of charity actions. And new album, named “Our 14 words”, became a proof that group never gave up its positions, satisfied with reached achievements, but made a forward step.
Every song on this album – a nail in the coffin of all those, who thinks that hardcore became insipid and lost its fury, that it became regular entertainment for rich boys and nazi tolerant people, and that it can no longer be the instrument of direct action.

In the United States this weekend, a handful of neo-Nazis belonging to the ‘National Socialist Movement’ will be gathering in Greensboro, North Carolina — the site where, 30 years ago, the KKK & Co. got away with murder (Neo-Nazi gathering stirs police preparations, Ryan Seals, News & Record, August 25, 2009). Apparently, according to comrades at One People’s Project, there may be some kinda counter-protest. At the same time, in the birthplace of Nazism, German voters in the state of Saxony will be going to the polls, where the NPD are expected to gain something like 5% of the vote.
Despite an avowed commitment to nationalism, the global neo-Nazi movement understands the importance of and constantly seeks to reinforce its ability to operate in an international context. Further, while the Internet has massively amplified this networking, it has always been a significant feature of modern fascisms. (See : Dreamer of the Day: Francis Parker Yockey and the Postwar Fascist International by Kevin Coogan (Autonomedia, New York, 1999) — a fascinating read; and Loren Goldner’s written an excellent of it too, available here.)
With regards the German NPD, its chief, unofficial ‘representative’ in Australia is the Sydney-based businessman Welf Herfurth. Currently, Herfurth wears a number of peaked caps, as a member of the ‘New Right Australia (and er, New Zealand)’; a ‘national anarchist’; a co-founder of ‘Volksfront Australia’; and as Master of Race Ceremonies at the 2009 ‘Sydney Forum’, an annual gathering of fascists sponsored by Dr James Saleam’s ‘Australia First Party’.
Each year the Sydney Forum brings — or tries to bring — to Australia an international guest speaker, and on two occasions organisers have sought the participation of NPD leadership. In 2003, Udo Voigt was invited, while in 2005 it was Gerd Finkenwirth’s turn. On both occasions, entry to Australia was denied them by authorities on the grounds that they were of ‘bad character’. One guest who did make it into the country (2007) is the Croatian fascist ideologue Tomislav (Tom) Sunić. In 2009, the identity of the foreigner is a mystery — seriously. No, really. I’ve no idea who it could possibly be.
On June 24 [2008], about 40 people attended a talk by Pacifica Forum speaker Tomislav Sunic, who only three days earlier had addressed the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) at its national “leadership conference” in Sheffield, Ala. Sunic, a writer and white nationalist, had previously spoken to the Washington D.C.-area chapter of the CCC and the Institute for Historical Review (at least twice). He appeared on the “Political Cesspool,” a white nationalist radio show, and was interviewed extensively for David Duke’s Internet radio program. Sunic and the former Klan boss (whose latest book is entitled Jewish Supremacism: My Awakening to the Jewish Question) commiserated about Jewish domination, low birth rates among people of European ancestry and discrimination against whites. “Especially in these multiracial cities, like L.A. or Washington D.C., I’m losing my eye contact,” Sunic confessed to Duke. “I’m sort of afraid even of raising my head and looking at people right in their eyes because I know they may not be of my species.”
Beyond these largely informal linkages, the ‘Australia First Party’ is also part of a regional alliance with fascist organisations from New Zealand (Aotearoa). Of the three Kiwis who attached their signatures to a piece of paper in April 2008 declaring the existence of this worthy project, one was Anton Foljambe, another the Mormon (!) and Fuehrer of ‘Right Wing Resistance New Zealand’ Kyle Chapman, while the third was veteran fascist necromancer Kerry Bolton.
Unkle Kerry is a fascinating — and er, slightly creepy — individual, with whose MaGiCaL pOWeRs I would really rather not contend. One who has is Roel van Leeuwen, author of a thesis on Bolton titled Dreamers of the Dark: Kerry Bolton and the Order of the Left Hand path, a Case-study of a Satanic-Neo-Nazi synthesis. In September 2008, Kerry cast a spell on the University of Waikato, forcing it to withdraw van Leeuwen’s thesis from its shelves; almost a year later, he’s still at it (New scrutiny in thesis case, Nicola Brennan, Waikato Times, August 25, 2009):
Waikato University’s handling of a complaint about a thesis covering neo-Nazi themes is being investigated by the Office of the Ombudsmen.
Chief Ombudsman Beverley Wakem has agreed to proceed with a complaint by one of the subjects of the thesis, Wellington man Kerry Bolton. A former secretary of the right-wing National Front, he complained the university’s investigation was substandard.
The thesis by Roel van Leeuwen was pulled from the university’s library shelves in September last year after Mr Bolton complained it was full of inaccuracies. It was reinstated last month after an internal investigation found it worthy of its mark.
The ombudsman’s investigation is based on Mr Bolton’s complaints the university investigation didn’t address the specifics of his original complaint or address the investigation’s terms of reference, didn’t outline the process that was followed in reaching a decision or give a reason for it. Mr Bolton said he hoped the new investigation would open the way for further action via the Privacy Commission and elsewhere.
A Waikato University spokeswoman said it had not been advised of any ombudsman investigation.

As noted, the NPD is preparing to sweep sneak into the Parliament of the Free State of Saxony, the Saxon Landtag. Or rather, to sneak once again into the Landtag. At the previous election, in 2004, the party received 9.2% of the popular vote, giving it 12 seats (of 124). Since then, four parliamentarians have left the party, leaving the NPD with eight bozos on board.
Curiously, in an earlier age, Saxony was a socialist stronghold — for the Social Democrats, from the 1870s through to the early twentieth century, and then the Communists (KPD). The triumph of Nazism in the 1930s was followed by 40 years of ‘Soviet’ tyranny in post-WWII Germany, and since 1989 and German re-unification, Saxony has been dominated by ‘conservative’, ‘Christian’ forces. In some of its major cities, and especially in some rural areas, however, the conservatives have been pushed aside by the radical right.
The relationship between the NPD and the extra-parliamentary radical right is fractious and mirrors, in many ways, that between the parliamentary and extra-parliamentary left. And while it is not exactly renowned for the depth of its intellectual culture, the radical right is, nevertheless, still a dynamic political phenomenon, and in contemporary, post-reunification Germany, it has successfully absorbed many of the lessons taught by its political opposition in the anarchist and autonomist left.
In Australia, the New Right/’national anarchists’ announced their existence to a perplexed but otherwise indifferent world in September 2007 by attending the APEC protests in Sydney dressed in anarchist drag. Among those in attendance were Darrin Hodges of the Australian Protectionist Party and Andrew Fraser, the former academic. This was the gnats’ first and largest public display to date, with a handful of subsequent public appearances involving an even tinier number of racist sillies. That said, as their already minimal presence on the streets has evaporated, so has their online ‘activism’ increased, with a proliferation of generally sterile blogs.
Despite this, and despite their obviously fascist ideology, Vertigo, the student publication of the University of Technology Sydney, has supported their claims — well, to be considered ‘anarchist’ anyway — and a related group, known as ‘Nationalist Alternative’, has also received media exposure, in both the Sydney Morning Herald and the South Sydney Herald (‘Crisis stirs deeper issues’, Nicholas McCallum, No.74, August 2009).
Of course, pulling the wool over a handful of student journos is one thing — fooling anarchists, another.

IN 1989 East Germans took to the streets and, with their chant, “Wir Sind das Volk!” (“We are the people!”), they toppled the Berlin Wall.
Two decades on, Germany’s neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD) has co-opted the slogan to boost its chances in Sunday’s state election in Saxony.
Five years ago, the party was elected to the parliament in Dresden with 9.4 per cent of the vote.
Shocked officials from other parties suggested it was a one-off protest vote against social-welfare reforms.
This time around, opinion polls put the party just above 5 per cent: a drop in support, but enough to return to parliament. That would be a first for the 45-year-old extremist party and a worrying signal for the other parties in Saxony. “The peaceful revolution got stuck along the way,” says an NPD flyer, “the people got a political system that dances to the tune of capital and the EU.”
Since 2004, the party has concentrated on Saxony: its efforts have failed elsewhere in the country and its national wing in Berlin faces bankruptcy after being defrauded by its own accountant.
Outside big Saxon cities such as Dresden and Leipzig, in smaller towns and villages blighted by unemployment, the party has established jobless drop-in centres and youth groups.
Here the party has discarded its Nazi ideology. Local officials wear suits, not bomber jackets, and turn conversations with locals about welfare cuts and unemployment to foreign criminals.
“The NPD likes to present itself as the party of the little man and using the 20-year-old slogan may touch on something with these voters,” said Prof Andreas Anter, political scientist at the University of Leipzig.
Few political observers expected the Saxon NPD to still exist by this election after a disastrous term in parliament.
A year after the 2004 election, three MPs resigned the party whip, while a fourth was thrown out for making Hitler remarks and bringing a gun into parliament.
A fifth MP, a driving instructor by profession, died in a car crash while a sixth man, a young party hopeful, landed in court on child pornography charges.
“These are people no one would want to buy a second-hand car from, let alone vote for,” said Prof Anter.
“If they get back into parliament, it will be in spite of, not because of, their politicians.”

Tens of thousands of philanthropic foundations finance social change within the United States, and last year they distributed $45.6 billion worth of grants. Thus given the not insignificant amounts of money being distributed by such foundations, an important question to ask is: how has this funding influenced anti-racism research and the evolution of race-related activism more generally? Yet to date few scholars in the field of race relations have attempted to address this simple yet critically important question. Scholarly attention has of course been paid to the role of right-wing foundations in promoting often racist neoliberal politics, but for reasons unknown, the influence of liberal foundations has for the most part been left untouched. This phenomenon is worrying given the small yet growing critical literature on philanthropy.
As might be expected, liberal philanthropists like many other unaccountable and undemocratic bodies regularly downplay the magnitude of their influence on society, successfully disguising the arguably crucial hegemonic function they fulfill for ruling elites. Of course, similar claims from other key powerbrokers — like the mainstream media — are rightfully met with skepticism, but in the case of liberal foundations the opposite appears to be the case. Consequently researchers (in most fields) have naively accepted the liberal foundations’ own benign sounding rhetoric at face value, and have ignored or belittled their influence on democratic processes…
It appears that ‘Maxine Grey’, aka ‘Tina Greco’ — the New Zealand-born ‘Grand Dragoness Church of the National Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (Realm of Australia, Victoria and New Zealand)’ and ‘ASSISTANT TO THE IMPERIAL WEBMASTER’ — has finally worn out her welcome among her rather slow-witted racial brethren.

This weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina, Carl D. Thompson’s AmeriKKKan cousins in the NSM will be holding a little rally, just a few months prior to the 30th anniversary of the Greensboro massacre. On that occasion, five anti-Klan demonstrators were shot dead by members of the KKK and assorted other fascists. Despite the fact that the killings occurring in broad daylight, and the presence of a US government informant among the nutzis, nobody was ever convicted of the murders.
German neo-Nazis attack Briton in Hamburg: police

BERLIN — Three supporters of Germany’s neo-Nazi NPD party have beaten up a dark-skinned Briton and attacked him with pepper spray in the northern city of Hamburg, authorities said Monday.
Police said in a statement that three suspects between the ages of 20 and 43 were under investigation for assault and battery over the events which took place Saturday.
The three men had been distributing flyers ahead of the September 27 general election for the National Democratic Party of Germany, the most radical of the country’s far-right parties which touts an anti-immigrant agenda.
The 46-year-old Briton, who lives in Germany, was handed one of the pamphlets and ripped it up, leading the NPD campaigners to shout at him and then beat him repeatedly, police said.
The victim was with his wife and four-year-old son at the time. He was treated in hospital and released.
“Witnesses alerted police, who dispatched several patrol cars to find the men,” police said in a statement, adding that the three suspects were picked up soon afterwards nearby. They were released pending formal charges.
Two of the three suspects, aged 20 and 33, had previous convictions for violent crimes.

German neo-Nazi’s Holocaust denial sentence upheld

BERLIN — A German federal court on Tuesday upheld the Holocaust denial conviction of a founding member of a left-wing terrorist group turned neo-Nazi, saying he must serve his six-year sentence.
The Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe threw out Horst Mahler’s appeal of the Munich state court ruling made in February.
Mahler, a founder of the Red Army Faction in 1970, was convicted of incitement for posting videos denying the Holocaust on the Internet and distributing CDs promoting anti-Jewish hatred and violence. Denial of the Nazi Holocaust is a crime in Germany.
It was the latest in a string of neo-Nazi-related convictions for Mahler, a lawyer. In addition, a court in Mainz in 2003 found Mahler guilty of condoning a crime for saying the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States were justified and fined him several thousand euros (dollars).
He was also convicted in the mid-1970s for Red Army Faction-related activities — including several bank robberies and for helping notorious terrorist Andreas Baader, another founding member of the group, to escape from jail.
He was sentenced to 14 years in prison but was released in 1980 after he made several public statements condemning terrorism and Red Army Faction methods.
Mahler was a member of the far-right National Democratic Party from 2000 to 2003, and acted as its attorney.
Admitted neo-Nazi Bill White will stay in jail until he’s returned to face federal criminal charges in Roanoke. A judge denied bond for White Friday morning in Chicago. White has been in federal custody since last year when he was charged in Chicago with using his website [overthrow.com] and other methods to encourage violence. Later, prosecutors in Roanoke added similar charges. Last week, Judge Lynn Adelman threw out the Chicago case citing freedom of speech protections. Adelman wrote “an intimidating context alone does not remove the protection of the first amendment.” White’s Chicago lawyer, Chris Shepherd, argued Friday that White should be released on bond as he awaits trial in Roanoke. “No one’s ever been harmed by Mr. White,” Shepherd told News-7. “He’s spent nine months in jail for a crime he did not commit.” Shepherd said it is uncertain how long it might take federal authorities to bring White back to Roanoke. He said it could take several weeks, if not months.

All exist both in and on the margins of reality, and the intersection of popular culture, politics, (new) media and the law. And all have recently been bedevilled by blunders.
Of the cast and crew of The Hal, Liskula, Dylan, Kyle, Jackie, Bill & Co. Show, the two most exceptional are Hal and Bill. Both Hal and Bill are in jail awaiting trial, accused of various crimes, but most significantly of being responsible for issuing threats to kill or injure judges and juries connected to some recent US court cases.

A recent summary of one of Bill’s legal battles is detailed in ‘Online threats to juror are protected speech: Judge dismisses indictment on free speech grounds’, David Ziemer, Wisconsin Law Journal, July 28, 2009. In essence: “Case: U.S. v. White, No. 08-CR-851. Issue: Can a defendant be criminally charged for posting a juror’s address on the internet? Holding: No. Where the post does not incite imminent lawless action, it is protected by the First Amendment.”
Hal Turner, an intermittent internet radio talk show host and blogger, was arrested today by FBI agents at his home in North Bergen, N.J., on a federal complaint filed in Chicago alleging that he made internet postings threatening to assault and murder three federal appeals court judges in Chicago in retaliation for their recent ruling upholding handgun bans in Chicago and a suburb.
Internet postings on June 2 and 3 proclaimed “outrage” over the June 2 handgun decision by Chief Judge Frank Easterbrook and Judges Richard Posner and William Bauer, of the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, further stating, among other things: “Let me be the first to say this plainly: These Judges deserve to be killed.” The postings included photographs, phone numbers, work address and room numbers of these judges, along with a photo of the building in which they work and a map of its location.

“I’m tall, I’m blond, I’ve been modeling for many years, and people get jealous,” she said. “If I had to deal with everyone who is jealous, I wouldn’t have time to do anything else.”
Liskula Cohen used to be known as a model; she’s now known as 1) a “skank” and 2) as the person responsible for bringing legal action (January 2009) against the Google corporation, forcing it — by way of a ruling by Supreme Court Justice Joan Madden — to ‘be evil’, and to provide her (and her law-talking guy) with the email address of a blogger responsible for calling her a “skank”. According to Liskula, the email address enabled her to immediately identify the person responsible for the offensive (‘Skanks in NYC’) blog: Rosemary Port, a fellow New York nightclubber with whom Liskula had previously had words.
Currently, it appears that, having established who was responsible for calling her names, Liskula has dropped defamation proceedings. Rosemary, on the other hand, is now threatening to sue Google for failing to protect her privacy (Google faces $15 million lawsuit for releasing blogger information in model row, The Daily Telegraph, August 24, 2009).
Port won’t win — one assumes — but even if she does, it’s a piss in the ocean for Google. More troubling for bloggers who wish to remain (relatively) anonymous — to be precise: those who wish to blog using Google’s Blogger and a traceable email address — is the extent to which the case sets a legal precedent (within US jurisdiction).
Beyond this, I wonder what the implications are for the individuals concerned. For Cohen, the allegation that she is a “skank” (inter alia) will now — presumably — always be associated with her name. This was, obviously, not her intention. In fact, quite the reverse: Cohen was seeking to redress alleged defamation (harmful lies). Having also, apparently, decided not to pursue damages against Port, it could be argued that Cohen is now actually in a worse position, with regards her reputation, than she was before bringing legal action against Google. As Rosemary Port has stated, “By going to the press, she defamed herself. Before her suit, there were probably two hits on my Web site: One from me looking at it, and one from her looking at it. That was before it became a spectacle.”
As noted previously, a few weeks ago I was threatened with being sued for defamation by Dylan Lewis’s manager Mark Klemens. This was because of some unkind remarks I’d made about Dylan to the effect that I did not find him to be anywhere near as entertaining as his PR company might otherwise suggest. Curiously, while I didn’t accuse Dylan of being psychotic, or a liar, or a skank, or a ho, his own bio on Nova FM states that he is a prostitute and a gimp.
To anyone but a law-talking guy, this would probably be interpreted as being an attempt at something called ‘humour’. That is, a reasonable person might conclude that such claims — whatever their other qualities — are (were) not to be taken literally.
Or not.
In any case, a post on my blog that, in January 2008, when searching for the term “Dylan Lewis”, appeared on a Google search somewhere on the fourth or fifth (?) page, has been supplanted by another post on the same subject that now appears on the first page.
D’oh!
Kyle & Jackie
Kyle Sandilands and Jacqueline Ellen Marie Last O’Neil Henderson — ‘O’ — are back on the air. This is because Kyle is a “radio rebel”, a “lovable rogue” who “tells it like he sees it” and whose “no holes barred approach and passion for uncovering and championing new talent” makes him “a leader of the ever changing world of multimedia” (and yes, the original quote does read ‘holes’ not ‘holds’). Jackie O, on the other hand, is “one of Australia’s most successful and high profile radio co-host[s], interviewer[s], television presenter[s] and magazine columnist[s]” — still.
Point being: money talks, bullshit walks, and for so long as The Kyle & Jackie O Show brings ratings in key demographics = advertising revenue = profit, they are untouchable. The only standard business has to defend is teh bottom line (Austereo chairman forced to defend on-air standards, The Age, August 24, 2009).

(Of course, if Phil Cleary decides to throw his hat into the ring, Garrett’s fuct.)
In Northcote, Fiona Richardson‘s cuisine currently reigns supreme, while in Richmond Richard ‘Tricky’ Wynne will be crossing swords with Kathleen Maltzahn. ALP campaign director Stephen Newnham has promised to pull out all stops to stop the watermelons from infecting State Parliament, so we can look forward to all kindsa awesome tricksiness on the ALP’s part.

The recent release of the film Katyn yet again perpetuated the lie that thousands of murders had been committed by the Red Army in the Katyn forest in the 1940s. The truth about the circumstances in Poland during this time is the exact opposite – the massacre was committed by the German Nazis and then, two years later, Goebbels sought to blame the Soviet Union. Goebbels’ lies are being peddled as the truth by all the anti-communists in the working-class movement – this meeting will help us counter their treacherous slanders.
